Had a Catalina 22 for 11 years. Took it up and down the coast of California , as much as 50 miles off shore and trailed it to Mexico and many lakes inland. Loved the simplicity and flexibility of that boat.
@@dr.franciscotorresmarquezc7352 No, the Catalina 22 would definitely not be considered a blue water boat. It's possible someone could take it across the Pacific or Atlantic if they got very lucky, but I would guess they'd be more likely to need rescue than succeed.
Sailing Daydream, you guys are a inspiration to me and a wonderful couple who obviously enjoy each other very much. The POS's that have to point out the size of your boat like you aren't aware of it, and posting how they wouldn't do it makes me sick! You know what....do it again and keep loving each other and sailing.
Hey great job. Back when I was making ocean passages in my 25’ outboard powered sailboat, we didn’t have GPS, plotters and the incredible weather apps and info that there is today. Not to mention things like solar panels and small autopilots. You just did your best guess, listened to the very poor weather forecast available took off and prayed. Ha ha. But these things make is so much more feasible and safe to make passages like this in smaller daysail type boats. Well done!
Great watching another small boat sailor accomplishing an amazing passage. I'll be sailing the Keys in my my Compac 19 this February. If the weather is favorable, I'll head to the Dry Tortugas. I attempted it in 2010, but the weather turned ugly and I was lucky to return to Key West just hours before the winds hit 45mph.
Fair winds, brother! The Compac 19 is a great boat. I would love to see video, if you get the weather window to go. It's usually easy to sail to the DT from Key West, as I'm sure you know. But it can be a bitch to get BACK, since the wind is almost always east, unless a front is involved. You might get lucky and be able to use the clocking wind from an approaching norther to take you comfortably back to Key West. Front forecasts are quite accurate. You could leave KW right after one front passed through, stay a couple/few days in the DT, then set sail for home the instant the wind was southerly enough to sail east. By the time the wind clocked around to the west, and then the north, you'd be safe and sound at anchor in the keys.
Enjoyed your passage. We've sailed a 1982 or '84 Catalina 22 for the past 10 years in the Perdido Bay area of coastal Alabama. Wonderful sailboat. May 2018 I was one of three sailors on a 1964 35' Pearson Alberg participating in the Regata Al Sol, Pensacola Bay to Isla Mujeres. 3rd day out we ran into 30 hours of 25-30 knot winds w/ seas running 6-8 feet. We double reefed the main and kept sailing. You did a good job managing your boat.
Thank you, Jay! I would sure hate to encounter those conditions on a C22. The wind is one thing, but 6-8' seas are another thing entirely. I would certainly hope it was coming from astern! Fair winds my friend ...
What a nice vessel and an enjoyable trip. I've visited Fort Sumter with my future husband many years ago now and those old forts really are impressive.
What a fantastic video, you have the right attitude to sailing, relaxed. Beautiful scenery most of all it was obvious you enjoyed yourselves. Cant wait for the next video.
Thanks for the vid... Took me back to the '80s when my Father used to take me sailing in a Catalina(Boomaroo in Australia) 25. I don't think that extra 3 feet would have made much of a different!
Your adventures inspired me. During the last week of March last year (3/21) I trailered my Sanibel 18 from NY and launched it from Flamingo in the Everglades. The intention was to sail to the Dry Tortugas and back over the course of a week. But 6-ft white caps and a very strong northerly kept me tucked behind the northern keys near Snipe Point for two days. I eventually made it to the west side of Marquesas and spent a night anchored there. I ran out of time and needed to head back to Flamingo. Sailed solo the entire time. Started and finished with 4 gallons of gas. It was an epic little adventure for me. Maybe I'll try again soon and make it to the Dry Tortugas. Anyway, thanks!
Man, that is awesome!! Alone in an 18', you are tougher than a two-dollar steak, my friend. I like your boat, too. Light weight, shallow draft, lots of ballast ... she'd be PERFECT around here.
It was great watching you guys. I have a Catalina 25 and am preparing to sail from Gulfport, MS, to some of the barrier islands. I’m apprehensive about it, as it will be the farthest I’ve been offshore. But your little trip (in a smaller boat) was very inspiring. I love how much fun you had.
You'll love it!! I remember when we first ventured out into salt water (we practiced in lakes first). We were so excited just reaching the 3 nautical mile line. It seemed so far. We took a picture of the chartplotter, high fived, and hauled ass back toward land. LOL
They're great sails. We bought ours (main and working jib) from thesailwarehouse.com in late 2013. Our big red 180 Genoa is a Rolly Tasker also. All of them are doing great after seven years. :)
What a great video on your little boat. You have a slightly nervous laugh that makes me well nervous.... Love the boat, I think I would like one like it. Thanks!

You guys are awesome sailors, and what incredible inspiration for the 2019 sailing season! I know you had been trying to make that trip, and I salute your patience and wisdom in waiting for the right conditions.
