NINE DAYS, 200 MILES on a CATALINA 22
FINALLY! It's been two years since the weather and our vacation times cooperated to give us a decent cruise. We hoped this one might go as long as two weeks, but still, nine days was a record for us, so we won't complain. As always, I apologize for being the world's worst video maker! Hope y'all enjoy anyway. :)

CURIOUS MANATEE WANTS A BELLY RUB!
มุมมอง 3.9K5 ปีที่แล้ว
This was one VERY friendly, curious manatee! He broke away from a group of eleven individuals to come investigate our little sailboat. Granted, I put the engine in neutral and coasted, but still, he did literally leave his (her?) group behind to come chase us down. I have seen a zillion manatees in my life, but only once before have I seen one roll over and beg for a belly rub. We had launched ...
Sailing to the Dry Tortugas on a Catalina 22
มุมมอง 140K5 ปีที่แล้ว
This was one of our longest-awaited "bucket list" cruises: Marco Island, FL to the Dry Tortugas! We waited five years to get the right weather window, and still it was marginal! It took 26 hours to get there, and 30 hours to get back. We celebrated New Year's at midnight on the return trip. Thanks for watching, hope you enjoy the video!
FIVE DAY CATALINA 22 CRUISE in SW Florida
มุมมอง 21K5 ปีที่แล้ว
This was an interesting cruise .... between contrary wind, lack of wind (and therefor lack of fuel, ice, food, beer, etc), bad weather forecasts, NO weather forecasts ... we literally had to change our plans every single day. We never made it to Marathon Key like we hoped, but we still had five days and nights of fun and adventure on the eastern gulf of Mexico! We put 154 miles under the keel, ...

Gulf of Mexico, late July. We got about two hours warning via VHF (no cell signal where we were) that a line of thunderstorms was coming. It was still over eighty miles away, but it was coming at us fast and we were sailing straight at it. Cruising Florida's "10,000 Islands" on a Catalina 22

This Spring's cruise didn't turn out quite like we had hoped - if conditions allowed, we were hoping to sail to the Dry Tortugas for a few days. It's been on the Bucket List since we first started sailing. But the winds were all over the place, and although we believed we could get to the Tortugas easily enough, getting BACK looked like a problem, in the time we had allotted. So, we launched fr...

Catalina 22, back on the Gulf!
มุมมอง 44K7 ปีที่แล้ว
For the first time since New Year's, we finally had the time and the weather to spend a weekend sailing, around the Crystal River/Cedar Key FL area. I thought other Catalina 22 owners (or potential ones) might enjoy seeing this. We were close hauled in 16-20 knots under a storm jib and a double reefed main until after the heave-to, when we reversed course to a broad reach. Then it was just a 11...

Just a little vacation footage from our April 2017 return to Bonaire, five years after our first trip. Video was shot on a Hero5 in a Super Suit at the dive sites of "10,000 Steps" and "Ladania's Leap". It was mostly overcast, no filter, and no post processing.
Six-day Catalina 22 cruise, SW Florida, New Year's 2017
มุมมอง 46K7 ปีที่แล้ว
This was our longest cruise, until late 2019. We sailed from Marco Island, FL, south to East Cape (the very end of the Florida mainland) and back, with a 24-hr stopover in Little Shark River while a "norther" came through. GREAT fun!
Just sailing a Catalina 22
มุมมอง 11K8 ปีที่แล้ว
Nothing special, it was just our first good sail in a LONG TIME. And the weather was SO nice. Slocum (our autopilot) was at the helm most of the time, very few sail adjustments needed, may have tacked six times all weekend. Spent the night on the hook in Cedar Key, FL, and enjoyed the company of a huge dolphin population all weekend. What's not to love??

Having only anchored there once (five years ago), I don't consider myself qualified to give recommendations! It's a sandy bottom there of course; anchoring in anything but sand is prohibited. We anchored almost directly in front of the main fort entrance on the SW side of Garden Key. It seemed like the best protected spot, and it was nice to be so close to the ferry dock. There were very few boats there when we arrived mid morning, but more filled in later, including after dark when some fishing boats came in.

Do you hand steer the entire time, or do you have some sort of autopilot, or maybe just use a tiller-tamer?

    • @geneneill530

Oh my goodness, no! We have a Raymarine ST2000 autopilot. I never want to be without one. On the return leg of this trip, I did hand steer almost all day until nearly sunset. But that was only because I wanted to be absolutely certain we had enough battery power to run the autopilot all night. It does consume a lot of power.

Hi...great video. I have a few questions if you don't mind. How long did you go before re-provisioning (food, water, etc)? Also, did you carry a large container of water for cleaning yourself. Just trying to understand how you did this on such a small boat. Thanks.

Steve, we took on some extra ice in Flamingo, and two gallons of gas. No food, we were stocked enough on that. Our boat has a five gallon water tank which is plumbed to the sink faucet, and we freeze a few 1/2 gallon bottles of water for our main ice supply. Those ice bottles become drinking water as they thaw. The potty has its own five gallon water tank for flushing. As for bathing, we have different methods we use, mainly depending on how cold the weather/water temp is. But we can generally get cleaned up with as little as a quart of fresh water or less if need be. It's easier than you might think. :)

Nice trip! It was my pleasure to watch it. Tell us more about the night sailing. By the way, was it a RudderCraft rudder? How do you like it?

    • @geneneill530
      @geneneill530 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

Weather wise, we had good luck both nights. We took three-hour shifts at the helm, letting the autopilot steer. Sleeping was very difficult, especially on the first leg of the trip. I watched a meteorite streak down into the ocean a few degrees off the bow. It was either very large or very close, I could not tell which. There were thousands of crab-trap buoys even miles out at sea. We hit quite a few of them but they caused no trouble. In the darkness it sounded like someone bouncing a basketball along the bottom of the hull. Yes, we have a Ruddercraft kick-up rudder. They are wonderful rudders, performance wise ... but they have a well-established habit of breaking pintles. Our pintles broke on a different cruise, in fine weather, without warning. I was lucky enough to grab the rudder before it sank, and haul it into the cockpit. Ruddercraft is aware of the weakness, and THEY DO NOT CARE. They have no plans to fix the problem, ever. So while I do recommend the rudder, I also recommend you fabricate your own pintles, or at least use a lanyard to save the rudder from loss when it suddenly falls off the boat. Never trust it completely with the factory pintles.

It's a great potty (Thetford 550P), but the hold-down bracket is garbage. By itself it WILL NOT hold the potty in place reliably. Period. Thetford has known about the problem for many years and has chosen to do nothing about it. We are officially retiring it this year, in favor of a Dometic 965. Not as elegant looking, but the hold down brackets are bullet proof. Both the 550P and the 965 are five-gallon models, which are too tall to fit under the V berth cushion-board thingy (nautical term). You'll have to go with a 2.5 gallon model to get that capability. We don't sleep in the V berth, so it's a non issue for us.

Not to mention things like solar panels and small autopilots. You just did your best guess, listened to the very poor weather forecast available took off and prayed. Ha ha. But these things make is so much more feasible and safe to make passages like this in smaller daysail type boats. Well done!
