  • Hello guys in this tutorial I will teach you how to make a massive open world map using world composition. We will start out by creating a tiled landscape in world machine, and then export it to Unreal Engine 4. We will setup our own landscape material, and I will go over open world map settings such as world origin rebasing for singleplayer and multiplayer.

    Do you know of a way to use a similar workflow with godot engine? I know this can be roughly done with generate trimesh function but looking for a nice way to generate something similar without the lic fees needed for ue :)

    My program is different than yours..I'm in 4.27.. I don't have the same menu where "attach as mask input & invert the values to start drawing the terrain.. Is this because u have the professional version?.. Can I not draw a custom continent like this in the free version?
    Do u have or can u do an updated version.. Besides the volume issue, you're very easy to follow along for a beginner such as myself.. Thanks

      I watch almost everything with my Bose system at 100% and PC volume at 8-12%. With the Bose at 100%, the audio was barely comprehensible with the PC at 60%.
      A for effort though.

    can u do a tutorial on making mmorpg type open world maps (like world of warcraft) where you stream levels at certain points like gateways

      Zod Im working on a tutorial series that will potentially cover this. Its a pretty cool technique that allows you to have an MMO.
      To set this up you just plan your map to have different zones (or areas). There are basic path ways the player follows into these different zones. In between the zones are trigger boxes. You pass through the box, it calls the command to join the other server that is assigned to the zone you have entered. Your player data needs to be stored in a MySql database. When they join the new server (or zone) they will load all their character data (ie. clothing, statz, inventory etc) and it will somewhat appear seamless.
      In theory is sounds simple but in practice it can be quite complex. I will have to do a bit of research myself before creating a tutorial!

    Hello, im brand new to World Machine, I am wondering why I dont have a bar on my UI like yours in the beginning of the video where i can do things like attach new layout as mask input, that whole section of my ui is not there. I dont have tabs or anything, please help.

    Great tutorial man! I am new to UE4 and World machine so this was perfect! Curious, could you go over how to use World Machine to build terrain from a map you've drawn(whether in Photoshop or pen and paper)? Could be pretty helpful for DnD Dungeon masters to build their entire world full of different continents.

    Hope this wasn't too long of a tutorial! Make sure you watch till the very end (20:00) as I explain some important settings to enable for open world maps in Unreal Engine as well as setting up streaming distance - so you can see mountains, islands etc. from afar.

      Heya poly, I'm still pretty green on this. I've encountered an issue, maybe you can shed some light on. When I use a solid landscape, everything seems to run fine.. when I import my landscape with world comp, Everything grind nearly to a halt. I can't really do anything because it becomes so framey. Any clues as to why?

    this program is not free you have to pay for what he is doing. You can get a random map, if you want to create your own you must pay to do so.

    Just for clarification: Kill Z is the kill zone at a given z value, which you could set to kill a player after falling to a certain elevation, but it doesn’t account for X or Y position. To disable all kill zones, uncheck “enable world bounds” also under world settings.

    WM Build 4016 'Mt Rainier': "attach new layout as mask input" not there. Layout generator isn't under the layout tab. Also managing an added new extent crashes the engine. Thus, I cannot draw my terrain or use layout generator or the shape library at all.... uh help much needed plz >.

      I played around a bit and to load the shapes under layout view, you start with to a "shapes" node in the device workview.

    If you want to make a 100x100km world in unreal the scale in worldmachine should be the same. Now your mountains are technically out of proportion.
    From an artistic and gameplay standpoint it's alright though. Don't wanna walk 30 minutes to get across a hill

    Please, could you make a tutorial on how to make world partition work with continent/country sized maps (1000km x 1000km or more) in UE5 ? This seems to be a sticking point for a lot of people on the forums.

    IMPORTANT: In World Machine 4 you have to tick "Flip Y orientation" in Tile settings for proper import in UE5

    Hey awesome video i am currently working on a Big level using World Composition setted up like in your Video. But for some reason after some time the sublevels started to move all over the map to strange locations this messes up the project and i need to revert those level files everytime to fix the bug.. the interesting thing is that it dont happen everytime and also the level which moves is always different. After some reasearch i found it that this is a ue4 bug ? does anyone had this problem before or knows how to fix this maybe ?

    I am wondering if you would make a tutorial on importing an entire planet, Mars, heightmap into World Map and then into UE4? There's a bit written about it on the internet, it would be an extension of your current project and it would be a bit of a challenge. I wonder why we spend so much effort in making worlds when we have our own that is really well mapped, the Moon is really well mapped, and Mars is really well mapped. The upside is the landscape of Mars and the Moon are probably easier than Earth. Will you give it a go?

      Omg, that's an epic idea. Imagine a game where you could fight or explore those enviroments either as an RPG, MMO or maybe even a multiplayer centric title like planetside where the land has regions for battles.

      I'd actually love it if someone could do this with the Earth. I'd use it for something I'm working on right now, but later down the road. Only thing is it would need to be scaled for something the size of Godzilla to walk across instead of a person because of the nature of the game.
      Heck, if someone could recreate the different continents in the world I'd use them too if they're cool with it. Maybe someday I'll even bring them onboard with my project.

    I'm having trouble getting a tiled landscape to work. Even when I make a small map of 4 2kx2k tiles, I'll import them in ue4, but only one of the tiles shows up in the list, and when I try to load it ue4 crashes. No idea what I'm doing wrong, lol

    @Smart Poly I have a 4033x4033 island height-map from World Creator 2 do I need to split that or can the world partition grid cull that if so can you pretty please maybe do a wee video
    I'm using UE5, not having any luck with runtimeVT either. I started with the Echo Windwalker project and when I activated runtimeVT in project setting her pants and all the leather turned shinny black with no textures

    When you want to make a tutorial, first mention with WM version you're using. Each one is very different. 2nd, explain what you're doing, we're not here to admire how fast you work! 3rd, fix your microphone!

    And by massive I mean past 20x20km. Basically as large as it can go. Maybe something like 100-200km or at least 50.

    How do you increase performance by making zone chunks, so not everything is loaded but only the next chunk. Example WoW maps each zone is loaded individually amd the next zone does not load until you get within render distance, this causes a low render or land disapear for a split second but still is a more optimal openworld.

    Excellent video. Now, what I want to know is how to do the same in UE5 with World Partition instead. Fill the world, and then reduce the size of the cells being streamed?. Most videos I have found so far, only use really small maps: Usually the 63x63 or less (including a guy that recommended a 3x3). So, if anyone can clear that doubt for me, I would really appreciate it.

    That terrible terrain texture in third person view makes the result look not very promising. Getting it to look good in the players view is essential to make it a viable approach. Else it just looks like a hugely scaled up terrain.

    Hold on. I always thought that KillZ is supposed to kill players who fall down bellow set height. Does it also kills those who move too far on X and Y?

      You’re right. There’s also “enable world bounds” which applies to all directions. It’s also in world settings.

    Can I follow this tut with WM Basic? I just bought a new computer system and had to spend a fair bit of money upgrading some software such and ProTools and VSTs that no longer worked with Win10 - and as such am a little hard up for cash! I could probably spring for the Indie license if needed - will that work with your tut?

      There is already a problem with your tut with WM Basic - there is no group of items in a column, that appears like your screen, meaning there is no Attach New Layout as Mask Input box - so is there any way to get around this, a different option, something along the top menu, that will function the same or are the features completely crippled in WM Basic?

    I am having a problem where a lot of the tiles are not displaying textures properly and are just the default grey, has anyone else had this problem and how do you fix it?

    Hi ,i have one asking ,if i may of course ,what bothers me is that i am wondering how can i place the entire world or at least the Pacific or the Atlantic in Ship Simulator Extremes ,there are very limited maps there in this simulator ,,,,do you know some method that can place the entire world or for example a continent in Ship Simulator Extremes ?Thank you in advance :)))Best Wishes :)))

    Can someone help me, I have a 750km2 map. It has to be this big because I'm recreating a real-life island. So I can't follow this tutorial, does anyone know how I should make it? Should I sculpt by hand?

    Hello , i would like know if i can use your map for commercial project ?honestly im need a very small portion of the island , im too bad with level streaming lol and i would like use a real island than multiple little forest and beach map with loading between each level ... did you do some freelance work by the way ? It would sound good if we collaborate for little work

    You can get the World Machine free version to build your World but there are some size limitations. And you won't be able to build your map. :-(

    I wonder if Ubisoft uses this stuff to create their own open world games due their huge size. If so, that’s pretty impressive.
    I might create one in the near future! :D

    Is there anyway to lower the tiled landscape after placing them in z-axis? I placed two tiled landscape side by side, I'd like to lower one of them in its z-axis to align it with the other one.
