Dan Miller started his exploration of Chinese internal martial arts and health maintenance practices in 1983 with the study of Tai Ji Quan and Qi Gong. In 1987 he added the study of Ba Gua Zhang and in 1989 the study of Xing Yi Quan.
In 1990 he founded and served as the publisher and editor of the Pa Kua Chang Journal, a bi-monthly periodical dedicated to the study, practice and preservation of the art of Pa Kua Chang (also romanized Ba Gua Zhang).
Starting in 1991 he began traveling to Taiwan, Hong Kong, and mainland China to study these arts and interview the older masters.

I knew Dan when he was in Monterrey, CA. I consider him the most important promoter of Baguazhang to this day. I think that without his efforts Bagua would never have gained the recognition that it has today.

Joe, Thanks for the very kind words. I appreciate it! You have made quite the contribution yourself. I appreciate all of the time and effort that you have put into translating all of the classic Baguazhang books. Great work! I hope you are doing well! Thanks again.

I was lucky to have access to all issues of the journal at my teacher Andy Dale's school in Seattle in the early 2000's. What a treasure trove of information on Bagua! Very unique publication.

I'm a student of Andy's and am certified by him to teach Bagua. And I too, spent a lot of time in his library reading the Journals. What a great teacher! I miss that dojo. Cheers, Clay

@@breathspinecore Yeah, Andy is amazing. Always glad to hear from others that have been lucky enough to train with him. If I won the lottery I'd go back and visit more often to keep working on some of my favorite forms that I didn't learn so well, but I continue to practice the inner palms, 8 mother palms, swimming body, and wuxingsancaisanban, which were the forms we covered a lot in my time there.

@@brendanmattson Here's a video of me doing some of the forms I learned from Andy, including the 8 Directions/7 Stars. The taiji at the end is Yang, Jwing Ming's form. I was an indoor student of his for many years. Cheers th-cam.com/video/JTgv9-fjLJI/w-d-xo.htmlsi=8NFJ8yFRSXGXGxeN

I still remember subscribing to this journal and really looking forward to each new one. So much interesting information. There was definitely something special about getting one of those in the mail and putting your hands on it.

I train under one of Mr. Miller's kung fu brothers under Park Bok Nam. My teacher has many stories of Mr. Miller and his training that I've always found fascinating.
    Thanks for this fine interview!
