Amazing Bo Staff Skills. I love spinning the Bo or Rattan Staff and Training with this popular Chinese Kung Fu weapon! Here's my bo staff routine for increasing your ability, hand-eye coordination, and arm strength!
I started out on waxwood and white oak, but today mainly use rattan. Uber durable and brings pain to an attacker without excessive injury, as staff is prized as a "gentle weapon." But it's also nice to have a few heavy hardwood staves-not just for the extra weight in training, but b/c hardwood is the best if you ever have to actually knock someone on the head!
I started watching Jake mace's Bo Staff videos about 4 months ago and I've seen a massive improvement in the way that my upper body has strengthened as well as my dexterity has improved. I only do spins for 15 mins a day. I'd definitely advise these videos to people who want to get healthy fast. ^.^
Great video!!!! I just asked my 12 yo son......as he is practicing with two nunchuks........I asked him what weapon he wants to learn next.....and he stated the bo staff.....and we came across this video. He just got promoted to a 2nd Degree Black Belt....and has a BB is Judo, BB in Hapkido, BB in Nunchuks, BB in Sword and Nationally Ranked in USA TKD Sparring......so....this would be a great start for him. Tx!

This is awesome- I really want to get back into marital arts as it kept me in amazing shape. I never did weapons but the bow staff looks like good fun and a great work out.
+Kung Fu & Tai Chi Center w/ Jake Mace Hi, really good video. Although I just want to make a correction in terminology if you allow me to, Bo staff is japanese while Gun (staff in chinese) is the one for Kung Fu, I do not really know much of other kung fu styles than shaolin, which I train. Although the difference for the staff is that Shaolin Gun has extreme thicker and the other one thinner. I believe that the Bo is symmetric. If there is anything wrong, please tell me. Nevertheless, your videos are amazing! good job!
I watched a few of your how to videos the other day and grabbed my broom, unscrewed the brush and used it as my bo....I tried some of the spins and loved the way my body and mind were feeling with the motions....So I kept practicing for an hour and today a lil longer....I'm going to keep going especially since I can understand what you're demonstrating so well....Thank you!😙❤😊
Jake, I would personally like to thank you. I practice tang soo do, among other things. Your instructional video on crane kata was extremely helpful in that it allowed me to build better balance and become more generally comfortable with my footwork, this helping me to perform hyung seamlessly and more fluidic. I even watch your excercise instructionals to see if there's anything I can take away.
Kung Fu & Tai Chi Center w/ Jake Mace hmmm... it seems I have found your weakness Mace Sensei. If we ever meet in combat I will just yell out random numbers and make you lose count, and I won't fall for that "oh look at the pretty almond tree" diversion of yours now that I've seen it in practice!
same aha! But morgan has the right idea in terms of a weapon it makes a good walking stick/crutch.. it would stop most people at a slightly further distance than their arm.. and if they had a firearm I guess a conceal carry would help in that situation if you're not quick enough.. Morgan knew his stuff :P
Love this. I Use a 122 cm padded bamboo stick with a tail. It is absolutely not martial arts and not trying to be although I have trained since age 5. It is very much a throwing and catching activity with some correlation to sword though not specifically Asian styles, You videos have been a great help in helping me link some of my moves. I am now starting to also practice Bo. I am rubbish at it but am enjoying the journey. I lost 2 stone in 10 months spinning my sticks. Love it!
i never owned one but i found this broken hockey stick 6 years ago and ive trained casually with that ever since , i love this video , im debating getting an actual one to train with
Thanks for your opening explanation of the skip catch technique, ive seen many videos where spinning is depicted but not explained and so this video has instantly made it easy to understand how its done, big help for a total novice like myself so thanks! :)
Rarotongan Harley Let's see how many people we can get to dislike the original comment for being such a pessimist towards someone who's having a good time teaching! :D
I can't believe all the naysayers out there. This is a training video and these are real fight senerios. I can't believe the naysayers stupidity. They should learn something and hide there ignorance.
+Gary E. Sims "Real fight scenarios" would mean that two people wearing protection gear are actually fighting against each other. What you see here is just a demonstration on how to spin a stick.
+EarlGrey you are wrong, a fight senerio is a demonstration of moves utilizing the skills you have. Protective gear is not a requirement. see Kung Fu San Soo...Example.
Gary E. Sims I disagree. But we can argue about terminology all day long as we seem to have different definitions. If someone tells me tht they are doing a "real fighting" scenario i wouldn't expect them to show me a few practice moves where no real fighting happens or at least is simulated.
Great video Jake. Keep them coming. I have followed all your staff videos and getting better each week. Like all my martial arts skills, Practice, practice, practice. Number 3 had me for a while too.
These are just butterfly twists and various figure eights. Not badly done I grant you but hardly "amazing". They are the first things I teach my students.
+Preacher Muaddib i think that was his point.obviously the more advanced you get the faster and faster transitions come. i d rather have those 5 moves down to defend myself over a cell phone and a fist.
well i really like this because i see you can get winded in a good way and i do like that it builds strength in the fingers, wrist, forearms, biceps, deltoids and traps. this video alone, doing it 3 or 4 times a week for a year is really going to help me, thank you very much Jake
I am going to use this as a new workout. Normal cardio and weight lifting is getting somewhat stale and I think this will be a good intro into something that is a little more than just working the muscles and heart. Leaves you with a skill that is fun to have. I may go back and find the one that is more introductory to start for just spins until I build up a little strength in this area. Ordered a bo staff, just waiting. Good video and keep up the good work.
It's been almost 2 years since watching this video I can now spin a bo like really really fast I made up some of my own tricks along the way thank you for this video
It's kind of a neat effect but you might want to film with a higher frame rate so the viewer can see which direction the staff is actually spinning. Even just a Galaxy 5S built-in camera can take video in full HD at 120fps.
I learned from you and I am practicing every other day. It is amazing, I started doing the exercise very slowly and now I can do it in a better speed. Thanks a lot. And I am always checking out your videos. They are well made. bye, nice day. From your friend in Brazil.
Год назад примерно посмотрел твое видео "топ 10" до сих пор занимаюсь, уже освоил практически все движения. Отличные упражнения, прошла боль в пояснице. But morgan has the right idea in terms of a weapon it makes a good walking stick/crutch.. it would stop most people at a slightly further distance than their arm.. and if they had a firearm I guess a conceal carry would help in that situation if you're not quick enough.. Morgan knew his stuff :P
+Ice cube i made my self a staff like that cuz of morgan xd
Love this. I Use a 122 cm padded bamboo stick with a tail. It is absolutely not martial arts and not trying to be although I have trained since age 5.
It is very much a throwing and catching activity with some correlation to sword though not specifically Asian styles,
You videos have been a great help in helping me link some of my moves.
I am now starting to also practice Bo. I am rubbish at it but am enjoying the journey.
I lost 2 stone in 10 months spinning my sticks. Love it!
Are you the person who plays Donnie
i never owned one but i found this broken hockey stick 6 years ago and ive trained casually with that ever since , i love this video , im debating getting an actual one to train with
good for girls majorettes
awesome lesson. thank you so much. i plan to try these in my workouts.
all i could think of was: DONATELLO
I am just learning today I will try a few spins and see how I do , great info , thanks a bunch..
that was the same text as avatar.
Thanks for your opening explanation of the skip catch technique, ive seen many videos where spinning is depicted but not explained and so this video has instantly made it easy to understand how its done, big help for a total novice like myself so thanks! :)
"Yea this one gang wanted me to join because i was pretty good with a bo staff"
That is an awesome workout!!! Working on getting my own Bo Staff to start learning all the spins and strikes!!! Thanks!!!
Still waiting for the amazing.

Says the account with zero videos.
Rarotongan Harley Let's see how many people we can get to dislike the original comment for being such a pessimist towards someone who's having a good time teaching! :D
***** 160.
Oh, It's in there! :)
***** Tangaroa MC lol 160 videos and only 200 subscribers, you only need half a brain to figure out your channel is shit.
Watched a bunch of these. You're the best I've seen.
Gary E. Sims
I disagree. But we can argue about terminology all day long as we seem to have different definitions. If someone tells me tht they are doing a "real fighting" scenario i wouldn't expect them to show me a few practice moves where no real fighting happens or at least is simulated.
+EarlGrey I'll agree to disagree. have a great day
Great video Jake.
It seems to me that the implication is that "amazing bo staff skills" come from mastering the basics.
well i really like this because i see you can get winded in a good way and i do like that it builds strength in the fingers, wrist, forearms, biceps, deltoids and traps. this video alone, doing it 3 or 4 times a week for a year is really going to help me, thank you very much Jake
Thanks Sifu! Great warm-ups and skill building!
Excellent presentation, very clear instruction. Thanks Jake ! Enjoyed your videos. Keep up the good work.
Nice spinning. I love the soft staff. I spin to build arm strength and to relax...lose yourself in the spin and the bo.
It's been almost 2 years since watching this video I can now spin a bo like really really fast I made up some of my own tricks along the way thank you for this video
Excellent demonstration Jake.
You can see that this would be one great work out.
Thanks for posting
It's kind of a neat effect but you might want to film with a higher frame rate so the viewer can see which direction the staff is actually spinning. Even just a Galaxy 5S built-in camera can take video in full HD at 120fps.
Old man her (60) just getting into excersize, no more just fitness, GREAT video, many thanks
Simply outstanding! Thank you for sharing.
I look forward to learn more from your videos, thank you so much for what you do.
I learned from you and I am practicing every other day. It is amazing, I started doing the exercise very slowly and now I can do it in a better speed. Thanks a lot. And I am always checking out your videos. They are well made. bye, nice day. From your friend in Brazil.
Good instruction, amazing bow staff skills. First time at this , spun 15 times.
Congratulations teacher, I'm from Rondonia, Brazil, you can be sure that the kids here will tie in their movements
This guys skills really are amazing. Keep doing what ur doing.
You have SKILLS!!! I'm going to learn and do this! Thanks!
That is so cool nice form I like it and I also practiced with the staff and it looks like I need more practice thanks I'm gonna switch up when I make a video I'll show you guys a little of what I know
You are amazing! I’ve really enjoyed all your videos and have been honing my skills with the bo staff and nunchucks after watching your demonstrations.
Just started up again today with staff, this is just what I needed. Including all the times I messed up, I probably spun my staff close to, or around a LOT of times today XD
A very great discovery all your techments,😀 I’ll follow all the steps you mark, thanks master
wow.. easy to learn.. i mean you have explained in such a great manner.. Thank you.
man you make it look so freaking easy... wish i knew how... crazy how the bo looks with your movements you make it do man. Excellent...
You remind me of Donatello with that shirt, the counting and spinning :p
dude i only pick up random sticks and spin them and thought i was good because friends and family. This was inspiring. WOW great job dude loved the video(s) keep it up.
That staff spin looks completely badass. Would love to learn that!
Very good and I am already practicing it.... thanks
