Hi, i have an 145 cm Bo that goes at my forehead level. And an 130 cm jo at shoulder level. Question is. When i get taller can i still use the 145 cm one as a bo?
For people who say, Bo spinning has no value, I think they are forgetting the importance of the intimidating factor. You see a person spinning the Bo like that, you immediately know that person has skills using it, so the attacker might walk away. That might actually save your life in the wild as well. Wild animal sees that object spinning, it makes it think it can get hurt if it decides to get close to it.
Years ago the ability to spin my dollar store broom like a bo staff in an aggressive fast menacing way while screaming and yelling with command allowed me to save a coworker being attacked by a gang of 12 dudes who already had him on the ground in work’s parking lot… I broke through their circle, scared the big dudes, grabbed my coworker and got us both back in our work building. Don’t tell me spinning is useless, you can also use it to distract, build control and strength. Peace folks ✌
I'm 53 yo. Have started learning BO to help with wrist shoulder and elbow arthritis and lower back mobility with some core strengthening. It's the funnest thing i have found that will keep me moving. Thanks for sharing the small exercises that will help build up to the bigger more involved moves. Practical for a fight? maybe not but it sure does help with mobility.
What makes the Bo and Nunchaku one of the most cautioned weapons is that you can create distance which is transferred through your arms which can already create distance. Once you're dexterity reaches higher, spinning both shows that you've taken time to master the skills of combat. Basic combat always comes first and is a beginners line of defense. As I think he said, some schools don't teach the spinning method, only strikes. Now when you're spinning skills become more proficient, and you've taken the time and energy to master the rotations, a bold adversary will have second thoughts. Reason being that he/she sees that your techniques have no error while spinning your weapon and in turn 9/10 your strikes are even more devastating because of the level of strength and flexibility you have in your hand motions and complete mastered control of your Bo and Nunchaku.
great staff, i love using stick, in algeria in western area we have school specialising in fighting with cane , and they use spin to confuse opponent so they can win the fight as sport they do no casualty, i think this sport is fun, and conditioning and mobility all benefits you mentioned i agree cheers
This video has really helped me to achieve a level of skill I never thought possible, just last week I used my new bo staff skills to keep a crowd of potential threats away from me. Let’s just say that those girls will think twice about trying to “sell cookies” to me!
All great exercises for old stiff folks too... great for arthritic folks! Great tutorial for novices and teachers. Spinning isn't useless, it teaches space, time, rhythm in real time. Used it my entire life for health and defence response. Now it's all about flexibility and staying fit for advercity's challenges. This video is an example of a very selfless share... goodness comes from empathy and self resilience.
Excellent stuff thank you, Matt. I'm 72, have had heart surgery was told I have terminal cancer, dumped all the pills and radiation, took up Aikido and now your bo-staff. I'll say this: it's a better cure than the doctors any day. What's more, it's excellent for body/mind/spirit co-ordination, getting yourself out of yourself and thinking - just thinking about a physically demanding activity that gets you alive again. I've never done backwards and forward rolls before, they have made me feel miles better and now this, another mind and body stretching activity that is definitely anti-dementia, it's just terrific. Thank you for such a lucid explanation/demonstration. I'll get cracking with this right away. Tell all the old farts they need to get on with it, limber up again and devil to the hindmost with any of the big -pharma prognoses, they're bullshit. This is what we need. This really does you good.
@@ameershahul2968 Brilliant thank you! Cancer free, no pills, no more hospitals at all, no drugs, nothing - just exercise, fresh organic food and upbeat mind.
I would say that spins create dexterity and create a relationship with the stick, teaching spatial awareness and also smoothness of motion. I was a competitive fencer for many years and our coach, Michael Dasaro, who was coaching the women's Olympic fencing team at the time had us doing all kinds of exercises-- footwork with our eyes closed, visualization, fencing each other in wild pirate meles, in addition to our regular drills and bouting. It all teaches you something.
What I learned (from wrist straining and confusion with jerky movement) and now notice you do, is when your palm turns UP coming back the pinky and couple of fingers lifts up or off the Bo, allowing a smoother transition to roll the hand over coming back palm down and forward.
Im just getting into Bo staff training, i dont have an actual one yet (I have a bamboo walking stick that im using to train) But im really excited!! Bo staffs have always been interesting to me, and i think it's gonna be a great way for me to start exercising regularly!! Ha ha yes I agree martial arts as a whole misses the point when it comes to self-defense. Martial Arts is fun, great exercise, good for the body and soul, great for developing the basic techniques of self-defense, but self-defense must be its own thing. When you use the principles of self-defense, the techniques are not as important. Most martial artists refuse to admit that or don’t know it. That’s not to say that I think rat fighting is the answer or even Krav Maga, I think it goes way beyond that.
Matt, I enjoy your videos and techniques. It’s developing my wrist grip, arms, shoulders and hand eye coordination. I find the bo staff soothing and your classes pleasant. I’m a new subscriber and thanks for all that you do for us. It’s appreciated !
I carry a light, but very strong, rattan walking stick. It's is dressed up with some reflective tape for walking at night. Several stabs and strikes are obvious and I practice combos. But what I lack, and don't find on YT, are moves against a bad guy who closes and gets me in his grasp. A topic of interest! Thanks

Thank you. The explanation of spinning that starts at 7:30 is fantastic. My addition to that is " the other half of the circle". As you pointed out, it's necessary to have spacial awareness. I will incorporate it for the rest of my life. Be Well and Good Journey.

Hi Matt. Great videos and instruction for me, as a complete noob (and senior, to boot). While you make these movements seem so simple and effortless, they can actually be a bit confusing and counterintuitive for the beginning student, since they must reverse everything. Showing you from the back (facing the same direction as the student) would orient all the student's movements in the same direction as the teacher, but of course, the student would lose visual contact with the teacher's hands, etc. Have you considered reversing the image (almost like looking in a mirror)? It should be easy enough with video editing, and would make it far more intuitive for the student to better mimic your movements. Thanks again, Glenn.

I hate to disagree with a professional, but the spin can, in some cases have a strategic benefit in a fight. However, that all depends on the fighting skills of your opponent. If your attacker isn't well versed in martial arts it's possible that they could be discouraged from entering your safety space for fear of randomly being struck by the spinning staff. That said, it's never a good idea to underestimate your opponent by automatically assuming that the spin will be a guaranteed deterrent. Best to stay on the defensive until you're certain of the attacker's abilities. Sorry if my two cents weren't asked for, but I felt that I should throw that out there. Pole arms are the great equalizer. I am small (5'2) on a good day but i kept a 6'+ man at bay when he threatened me. Was working overnight at a gas station at the time and it took putting the staff between him and myself before he understood that No is a complete sentence.
Dang now I have something more to learn I might never carry the staff out running around but there’s always a broom or mop around and I work in hardware part time I can get oak dowel rod at a discount 🤪 love your channel
a little suggestion! when doing it you can try to record yourself because i looked at the mirror when doing it i couldnt see any improvement sadly. but when i saw myself on the video i was like wow. i really tried to do the same thing/move for 2 days and my shoulder got hurt somehow bad. don't let this happen to anyone who just started good luck!

Done that first front spinning with my eskrima or arnis ...now I have bamboo stick that is same length to my height ..I want to practice more as my arms excercises 😅
Awesome! Keep training!
Pole arms are the great equalizer. I am small (5'2) on a good day but i kept a 6'+ man at bay when he threatened me. Was working overnight at a gas station at the time and it took putting the staff between him and myself before he understood that No is a complete sentence.
Thanks
This is very good
Thank you!
Dang now I have something more to learn I might never carry the staff out running around but there’s always a broom or mop around and I work in hardware part time I can get oak dowel rod at a discount 🤪 love your channel
Thank you, just picked one up for a more interesting exercise
Awesome. Keep training!
El largo del Bo depende de la altura del practicante ,o tiene una medida estándar?
This is very fun and I fell like he is having a nice convosation with me
a little suggestion! when doing it you can try to record yourself because i looked at the mirror when doing it i couldnt see any improvement sadly. but when i saw myself on the video i was like wow. i really tried to do the same thing/move for 2 days and my shoulder got hurt somehow bad. don't let this happen to anyone who just started good luck!
That is an excellent tip! Thank you!
You just solved my confusion 😁
Awesome Carlitos. Glad I could help!
Which type of Bo Staff should I buy for self defense (not for demo or presentation)?? and my height is 5’5 if that matters. Thanks
A standard six foot hardwood Bo is great for self defense. Go for red or white oak.
@@pasquinilli any recommendations for someone who's only 5 ft tall. I'm really new to this and I thought I'd try learning staff with your videos. everything about them is so calming and empowering that it makes a nervous person like me feel very safe so thank you for that
