    Troubleshooting Tip:
If you have difficult frosting to smooth out try my “hot blade technique”. Run your metal angled spatula under hot water, dry it completely and use the hot blade to smooth out air bubbles. The hot blade melts the buttercream slightly making it easier to smooth out. Be careful though not to have too hot of a blade that the buttercream melts all the way through to the cake.

I’m headed to my kitchen to slap the frosting on my grandson’s smash cake, for pics. It’s a dinosaur egg! I’m so thankful I found you!!! A lot of this was an AWESOME refresher for anyone with cake decorating experience, and an awesome tutorial to learn by.
It blows my mind how I forget basic skills when it’s for something special (or will live forever in a picture..good or bad). Thank you 😊 ❤

So true! The cake gets eaten up good or bad but the priceless family pictures last a lifetime. What a cute idea to make a dinosaur egg! I hope you got great pics. I am so glad you found this video and my channel. Welcome! 😃🎂

You had me lmbo because I have a very nice neighbor who I speak with all the time, and I only remember her last name. I let it go too long as well so I avoid saying her name and I’m like “hi neighbor “ lol 😅 Thanks 🙏🏾 for the tips btw.

Dumb question (first time cake decorator here!) but if you are going to cover the cake in fondant, 1. do you need another coat after the crumb coat, and 2. if so, does the buttercream need to be so perfectly smooth? Loved this video!

Thank you! It's actually a great question! I recommend a coat of buttercream over the crumb coat if you are going to cover it with fondant because when you are smoothing out fondant you are also smoothing out the buttercream underneath the fondant at the same time which is important for smoothing. You could cover just the crumb coat but because the fondant is going against hard cake then you can't really hide any errors or change the shape because the cake isn't malleable underneath. It also tastes a lot better with buttercream underneath. Does that make sense? To answer your second question....No, the buttercream does not have to be so perfectly smooth, YAY! You should try to make it the shape you want and not have any "potholes" because that would trap air, etc. but you definitely do not have to smooth out every little wrinkle which is nice! Way to go for it! It takes a lot of courage to be a first time cake decorator! Good luck and let me know how it goes and if you have any other quesitons.👍😊🎂
