thanks I've just started working at a aged care residence and this had really helped me give the residents a more personal touch for there birthday celebrations
I just watched this while on the toilet-12 minutes of pure genius. Who knew bathroom breaks could be so productive? What a time to be alive! Thank you for this video.
I had a weird flowery, squiggly star shaped Shepherd’s Pie at the finish, though it tasted great. Thanks for the mashed potatoes tip! Inspired girl, inspired ❤❤❤❤
I started baking cakes for people at the beginning of this year when I had a miscarriage. It helped me through. Now I’m curious to see if I can pick up on making flowers! Thank you for making this video!!!! ❤❤❤❤
I have used mash potatoes in a piping bag when I made meatloaf in cupcake tins 😄great way to practice decorating cupcakes and my kids thought the meatloaf cupcakes were cool! 😎 Thanks for the great video! Going to use it today when I make 2 birthday cakes!
I used to practice on laminated sheets, then scrape the icing off and practice again. That batch of icing can last a long time with refrigeration or freezing.
I’m watching this not for cupcake decorating, but to make fake whipped cream for my epoxy cup toppers. I appreciate this because I did learn a lot. Thank you!
The last decoration was a classic case of trust the process, it ended up beautiful. Also thanks for the tip about using whipped cream to practice, I was really looking for a way to practice without making a batch of icing. Making mini Carrot cake cupcakes and doing fancy icing to the first time ever. Wish me luck lol
I tried the mashed potatoes, worked pretty good. You still have to get the consistency correct. You can still have some air bubbles. But what a great idea to practice instead of wasting buttercream using your techniques for piping
Lard 250g whisked for 5 mins. Mix together 1 cup of icing sugar with 1 tbsp of hot water and slowly add to tge lard and whisk. This is a recipe I found for fake buttercream on TH-cam Great video Georgia!
Hahaha I’ve bought tons of bags, tips, bands, stands, totes, & it’s all n a big crate & I haven’t ever learned how to do it!!!!! I’ll listen to this & try!!!!!
Oh! Thank You for showing us as well as talking through your steps and the reasons behind them. Now off to buy a bunch instant potatoes!! The most valuable yet least expensive TIP OF ALL for us newbies. I inherited several packs of piping bags....so of course I had to have a bunch of tips....but they all have been in the draw for a year now. Wasn't sure how NOT to waste the butter.. OMG! WHO KNEW!?
Just last night I took out all of my late mother's cake decorating supplies from when she made cakes for money to help our family out so many years ago! I gave some of the tips a try, cussed a bit, and suddenly remembered that this is NOT as easy as it looks. Georgia, you make it look like a dream! I think one of my problems was the consistency of my practice icing which was shortening and powdered sugar. It was so stiff that my hand was shaking trying to squeeze it out! I don't know exactly what the icing should feel like and what the best thing to practice with is. Any suggestions welcomed! Georgia, this was a GREAT & helpful video...thanks and God bless!
Oh my goodness. It sounds like you had so much emotion with using your mom’s supplies. I think your mom would be proud and happy for you to use these and think of her in every stroke you make. Much love ❤️
buttercream is a headache to make from scratch, but if you’re in the south (US), publix sells their buttercream in the bakery, just ask for however much you need! so much easier and i never even knew about this until i started working there!
@@candiseceribelli14 Well, I can't say that making the buttercream is my issue as much as the fact that piping REALLY takes practice...and more practice...and practice some more, right?!!! I have severe arthritis in my right hand and wrist (among a hundred other places!! lol), and I am right-handed. I am going to be 66 in about 10 days and picked up baking and decorating to keep my hands working to the best of their ability. And it's fun and my "creations" sometimes make me laugh so I figure at least I'm having fun! My roses finally LOOK like roses so I am making some progress. You know, my most vivid memory of one of mama's cakes was one that she made for a girl at our church (as she was often asked to do). The girl's mother was my mama's best friend, so the cake was to be my parent's wedding gift to the couple. It was two, three-tiered cakes with a bridge running between the two cakes, and on the bridge were three bridesmaids and groomsmen. It was all done in white and teal (called aqua in those days!), All done, mind you, in our brown Tappan double oven and our huge dining room table and delivered to the church by mama & daddy in our family van. They did whatever they had to do to provide for their family. Imagine this scenario in today's world! Not many are willing to do that much physical labor!
@@canditamcguckian1031 To be honest, my mama & daddy are probably sitting up there, watching me, and are having a good laugh! I can just hear mama saying, "I told you to pay close attention whenever you watched me working on a wedding cake!" LOL!! I could have been making money as she did!
@@candiseceribelli14 hello! And yes I’ve bought buttercream at Publix and it was so wonderful BUT I’ve moved to a town in SC that has a Pigglywiggly (yuk) and a Food Lion and an IGA. We don’t even have an Arbys here 😭 so no Publix within an hour of here unfortunately ugh 😩 darn small towns
This was a WONDERFUL video to help me prepare to teach my 6-9yo troop unit some piping skills, and the tip about instant mashed potatoes was AWESOME! It's cheaper, easier to make, not as sticky for clean-up, and most importantly, the girls weren't constantly licking their fingers during the lesson. 😂 Thank you so much!
thank you so much for sharing! just decorated a homemade cookie cake for my little sister. for those without piping bags, a ziploc bag works in a pinch too!
This is the same technique way back in 1987 when I enrolled in cake decorating .we use styrofoam instead of parchment paper and boiled icing.yes it is very true.piping diff tips for cake decorating needs practice .its just like when we were practicing how to write the ABC.
When I'm using store bought frosting, what I did is mix them with electric beater to add volume to it,after that I put them in the piping bag with tip.and put in the fridge for 30 minutes before decorating a cake.but no need to refrigerate if you only use for frosting/cover the cake.

Great imagination and really cute for having company also the meatloaf cupcakes! Can't wait to do it two night!
Lol
Whan I used the potato trik I used the frosting and for practice and the potato in the cake don't ask I'm bad at bakeing
Great idea of using mash potatoes
Meat cupcakes?! This could be the basis for a new fast food franchise!
GREAT TIP about the instant potatoes. I was thinking I can't afford to practice, butter is expensive.
I used to practice on laminated sheets, then scrape the icing off and practice again. That batch of icing can last a long time with refrigeration or freezing.
You can use crisco instead of butter .
I was thinking I'd just chill and whip a box of shortening
Mayonnaise can be used
How do you make the buttercream
I’m watching this not for cupcake decorating, but to make fake whipped cream for my epoxy cup toppers. I appreciate this because I did learn a lot. Thank you!
omg the looks my parents gave me when i asked if i could use the instant mashed potatoes for piping practice.
shaving cream lol
Should work great .

Yeah same
Helpful! I began cake decorating at a grocery store a week ago and I have no prior experience but this is really helpful.
