    The reason it cost so much is because every scene is animated in 3D then painted over to add detail. Literally the definition of "every frame is a painting." The effects, like the explosions and smoke, are animated in 2D like Avatar.

    As much as $11 million per episode sounds crazy, with 9 episodes of an hour each, that would basically divide up into 5 feature length movies, each with about a $20 million budget. If you look at it that way, it makes more sense.

    THANK YOU for understanding Cait’s mom’s decision to cut ties with Jayce. Thing is, Jayce is a LITTLE egotistical, I mean it makes complete sense, he’s barely an adult and he’s scratching the surface of a forbidden science that Piltover apparently hates, all from seeing it happen once when he was little, that takes SMARTS, but it also takes guts. He was willing to risk his career and the Kiranman’s (Cait’s fam) reputation because he believes in the potential of the arcane, because he’s “seen with my own eyes what magic could do, the lives it could save.” So both Jayce’s actions and Mrs Kiranman’s make sense here. People usually accuse her of throwing him away, like he didn’t inadvertently blow up a building!
    And no one’s willing to try because it’s been discouraged, probably banned, but only a select few actually know the devastation of magic. Heimerdinger for instance because of his old age. That’s why Jayce is willing to try and break the rules, because he’s naive and all he’s seen of magic is the good. Only that kind of person could have such a fiery passion for this branch of science.
    And I mean you could kind of compare this to the creation of guns. Ever since then, war has changed its course dramatically. But what, because of that we’re going to ban all guns now or even nuclear weaponry, and any research that could go into it? Great, and what happens if guns are used against us? We’d be royally bucked. It doesn’t follow the same logic entirely but it’s silly to erase this entire part of our world: magic, from this city because it was historically used for an act of evil. To think you could ever shield a civilization from that kind of thing is naive too in my opinion. (But buck guns)
    With diligence and a careful eye, Jayce’s research, and now Viktor’s as well, could make arcane become a force for good this time. I don’t know… that’s just my two cents.
    Also, the guy presumably spent his entire life from that moment obsessing over ‘hextech’ climbing his way through the ranks, getting a councilor to sponsor him, daring to step foot into the undercity like Ekko said, that’s strong dedication. Kicking him out of the academy would probably prevent him from ever achieving his dream of making this become a force for good, that’s why one reactor said they might as well have killed him. Magic saved his life, so naturally, taking magic away will take that back too. He’s attached himself, and he won’t ever let go.

      @GreySeashell-j3m 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +10

      Yeah I always felt disappointed when other reactors scorn her for that, when from an investors standpoint, it makes total sense? And it's not like she completely discarded him from the start. She was the one who insisted to her husband that they need to support him as his patrons, she gave him a chance, and spoke of his character in front of the council, and he discarded that for passion - which isn't me saying he did wrong, I'm just validating their reaction to that. Nothing is black and white. It's a bad look for their house and future endeavors that they supported a character like him.

    • @Hollowgleam
      @Hollowgleam 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think it's because Jayce DIDN'T blow up the building. Nor was his research "forbidden science". Remember when Mel asked if anyone had ever even attempted it before? They never said the arcane was forbidden, they said you are simply born with it. They never said anything about laws against researching it, because, nobody even thought it was a possibility. Piltover was seemingly founded after the incident Heimerdinger clearly witnessed, a place people ran to three centuries ago. It is a city that formed because of an incident, but they never state that they outlawed magic.
      Jayce was doing EVERYTHING that Cassandra expected of him, his research was nearly done. He clearly was able to replicate the crystal, he even had made the device that could tap into the power of said crystals, he just needed to fine tune it, but before that last step could happen, he became the victim of a home invasion, had his property stolen and destroyed by the burglars, had all his notes stolen by enforcers/the council, gets thrown into jail, and the only person in the world with the incentive, and power to help him, somebody that is on the council that judges him for this "crime" no less, turns her nose up at him. She decided he wasn't useful to her, and she discards him like he isn't a person. Even though he is a victim. Even though, if you think him guilty, would be equally guilty as he. If Jayce is to be punished for his part in creating the crystals, why not the person that had the oversight and funding over the creation of those crystals? Someone with the wisdom of age, someone with the position of councilor, someone that is meant to "know better"?
      What she did.. it's childish, disgusting even, and you see what she is like the rest of the show. People were judging her quite accurately. She is all about keeping up appearances, and keeping the people beneath her, down in the mud. Imagine if someone broke into your home, started a fire by knocking over your PC, and then the police arrested you, you get expelled from college, and you have a best friend that can help you, but they turn on you instead. Even though you are the one suffering an injustice. It's pretty darned messed up.

    If there is one thing this show does well, it's character development...and this show does A LOT of things more than well. I think you'll find that as you progress through the show, you're opinions of the characters will change...which to me is a great indication of just how well written and "human" they made these characters. Just like real people, they have strengths and weaknesses, good traits and faults, moments of bravery and moments of doubt. The degree to which they have each of these fluctuates. There are definitely some characters that fall into the "more good than bad" or "more bad than good" side of things but at the end of the day, it's all about perspective. They all have their reasons for doing what they do, which to me is what makes them so relatable. 😉

    The Arcane Season 1 has 9 episodes and was released in sets of 3. Each set of episodes is kind of like a chapter (Chapter 1 = Ep 1 - 3, Chapter 2 = Ep 4 - 6, Chapter 3 = Ep 7 - 9) You'll see what I mean as you guys watch the series.

    • @LogicUnpublishable
      @LogicUnpublishable 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      I'd sooner describe them as Acts. The episodes feel more like chapters. In classical story telling, like in plays, you have Acts where there are story beats that are usually associated with the given Act. Arcane definitely follows this trajectory. It's part of what makes it such a tight story, they are using a centuries old formula for creating suspense and delivering climaxes.
      I don't have a real problem with calling them chapters, but when I think of chapters in a book, there are a lot of them, and they don't all feel like a complete story. Whereas Acts in a play or opera or musical tend to mark distinct breaks in the narrative, which feels more congruent with what Arcane has done.

  • @LogicUnpublishable
    @LogicUnpublishable 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +17

    When you've finished the show, definitely go back and watch it again in three episode chunks. The show released three episodes at a time, and it almost feels like three movies as opposed to nine episodes. When it came out, the audience could binge three episodes, but then had to wait a week for the next act to be released. I say almost, because it's pretty much flawless and every episode can stand alone. And because it also feels like one cohesive season of a show as well.
    Despite it being such a modern medium (especially for western audiences), it has a very classical narrative structure. It can be enjoyed in different ways like one at a time, or binging all nine, but I think the intended manner of viewing was as it was released, three episodes at a time.

    Mind you, a big reason why this costs 11 million an episode is because this is made by a video game studio with no experience in making a tv show, with an animation studio that was at the start of the project 5 people who only ever done music videos, that they grew into a studio of over 200 animators. I would not surprise if they can make the second season with a budget of less than half of that without dropping quality, now that they don't do literally every part of tv show production for the first time.

    This classification "animation is for children" is only a Western concept and it goes back to the long (and still ongoing) censorship after the Second World War. Since the publication of all material intended for an older audience was made difficult or impossible for several decades, it has not been done much in the West. There has been no censorship in the East, so anime and Manga have been able to develop for different audiences. In the East, you can find anime and manga intended for children and really not intended for children and everything in between. In recent years, Western publishers have seen the possibilities that anime and Manga make possible, and have started remaking animation for an older audience. A great example of this is precisely Arcane.

    The public budget for Arcane is indeed roughly 10+M per episode. But Forrtice was 15 people before Riot decided to built Fortiche into a 300+ animation Studio.
    The total cost of Arcane will never be public, but Riot said the the "Bridging the Rift" documentary that it was a 9 figure sum....
    The only three video gaming companies that would spend 9 figures on expanding their games are Valve and Epic.
    Riot, Valve and Epic are not publicly traded, so they don't need to be beholden to the "annual growth" that stock companies are beholden to (by law btw)
    They can actually spend a billion dollars on a bet, and hope it works out. Other then the two mention above, nobody else can do that.

    The 10 million per episode is actually "relatively cheap" cause they had a streamlined pipeline of 'The Vision' so there was minimal revisits and reworks. Watch the BTS!

    If you define Power trips as the enjoyment of exercising your power, I don't think Marcus was doing it, per se. He's just a self righteous prig with a need to make his world "right", as he sees it.
    He has little empathy for The Other, and no wisdom, but no desire for power itself.
    In fact, the only person that comes close to wanting power for power's sake would be Jace, and even he wants to do things with it, once he controls hex tech.

    I've pretty much always been open-minded to animation, but there is so little done in animation that interests me. I never did like cheap animation. I never liked the typical anime (cutesy cartoon giggly/senselessly super-violent people with giant eyes and weird gaspy reactions to everything) aesthetic. But this series, I watched trailer 1 and was hooked. I saw beauty and greatness. And the full experience of the series did not disappoint whatsoever. My favorite series of all time.

    Short question: Is "Cyberpunk Edgerunners" or "Legend of Vox Machina" on your watchlist? If not they should be. Both are high quality animation shows.

    I mean, 90 million dollars for an animated movie isn't that crazy if you think about it 😂
    Kung Fu Panda 4 had a budget of 85 million & it was the lowest of the franchise by far... the other 3 movies were in the 130 to 150 million range...
    And this series is way longer than an animated movie, so, yeah I can see 10 million per episode

    While Arcane is top tier, I respectfully submit that the spiderverse two movies are on a similar level.
    Their story is also top notch - not as good as Arcane, but what is? It's still well worth watching.

      No they just arrested him because he was doing illegal studies and experiments, they would've arrested him if they had arrested someone for the heist or not.

    Not watching a show because you view it as "for kids" is such a ignorant mindset a person can have since animated shows are just a different medium for telling a story that is just as moving and deep as anything with live actors, sometimes even more. Also when you guys are thinking about "why" both Jayce and Viktor want to pursue magic you guys are thinking too much like normal people, they want to do for money, fame, status? No, it's quite simple what do all scientist want to do, to discover, create, and continue quenching their thirst for knowledge as someone who loved Organic Chemistry at his college. 🤓
