Wife and I enjoyed the film. The tense atmosphere was well crafted. Ending felt right to us, so YMMV. It's a slow burn, so if that's not your cup of team and you're like the couple behind us conversing throughout the film (and not about the film) and flipping people off who told them to keep it down, I'd suggest bringing a coloring book for the dark, especially if you're the type that lacks self discipline or basic etiquette.
That Bill Clinton picture on the wall was huge. I think this film is meant to be in the same time and universe as Silence Of The Lambs, Twin Peaks or X-Files. PS Everyone is going to go on about Nick Cage who was weird and scary (Hannibal Lecter was scarier in my opinion) but Maika Monroe and Alicia Witt were phenomenal also. The whole cast really. I wouldn’t be surprised if there is a sequel. Great video!
Speaking of the X-Files there's a very specific musical theme that pops in at one point that's very reminiscent of some of the creepy musical stings they used to use on that show, which _has to_ have been deliberate, and a neat touch
“TAKE COVER CHIIIIIIIIIILLLLE!!!” Now swiiiiiiiiiitch.. to kryptoNIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIITE!!!!” 😂🤣no other actor on earth can sing song their lines in such an artistic way like Cage 🤣
Although I was very intrigued at the start, I ultimately found the whole film predictable and disappointing. The acting and editing is phenomenal, but the script is filled with clunky exposition, unrealistic character choices, and very obvious reveals. An anti-climactic climax is the final nail in the coffin. The film boasts an intelligent mystery, and resolves it with a campy predictable outcome that feels like a first pass at the script. I'm glad many people seem to have enjoyed the film, I just was wondering if anyone else felt the same way I did? Or am I completely in the minority here?
You are not alone. Nothing felt fresh here - I felt like from minute 1 I was predicting the scenes as they happened all to end in honestly one of the most deflating endings I’ve ever seen. Not good.
I watched this movie literally today having never heard of it, but my dad bought tickets on a whim and I gotta say it was better than I thought! My favorite scene was the parallel between Lee and Longlegs with their respective driving scenes in the same car. Nic cage was genuinely insane in this and I gotta give him props because his character was who Jared Leto wants to be when he method acts. Like holy shit. The whole atmosphere really helped with the suspense, with all the open space and all. The trailers for other neon films while in the theater made me genuinely want to watch them, and that usually doesn’t happen. I can’t wait for Cuckoo to come out.
Best trailers ever. I loved the movie but found the little analog style horror drops way scarier. Especially the "that's not my daughter" one and "do you still say your prayers".
Nic Cage's scream in the car was actually what completely took me out of the movie. The tension was building and letting it release that way was extremely unfulfilling. There were so many jumps in the storyline that were jarring like the movie had been chopped up to save time. ****Spoilers**** The whole aspect of putting souls in the dolls was also very unfulfilling. It's like they went "okay we have an interesting premise with a serial killer... let's just throw that out the window and SATAN IS BEHIND IT ALL." Even the whole "a gift from the church" part was very interesting. The mother was obviously involved from the moment you meet her. I really felt this movie lacked some cohesion in key moments. Moments when she was actually doing detective work and such were very interesting, but as soon as it completez the jump over to supernatural it lost me. Se7en is a great example pf how this should be done. Also "hey I conveniently have a photo of this exact guy in my childhood box of memories, so now we can go look aaaaaaand he's already caught. Just weird direction choices that could have been so much better. I understand I'm in the minority about this movie since everyone else seems to think it was great, but hey, that's cinema.
I don't think the photo was meant to be convenient but more a part of destiny that was playing out. Much like her visions, it was all clearly part of some immaculate design wherein she'd be able to bring an end to everything and save that last girl. That's how I saw it anyway.
Ok this is my honest review.. was expecting sooo much from this movie especially being compared to "Silence of the Lambs" (one of my favourites) ..not a Nicholas Cage fan at all - but everyone said his role in this movie was not like anything he has ever done.... the story line did not make sense, the main female actress did not connect with the audience or have any character development. The storyline was week - there was no real plot. Nick Cage's character was overdone - the key to Silence of the Lambs was that you connected with the characters - there was a plot .. Anthony Hopkins (with no over done make up etc) was there to help catch a serial killer... none of this applies. The filming style was good , and there were a few jump scares - but as far as it being a crime thriller - nope because nothing came together. Way too much close ups of the actress playing a sort of physic FBI agent - but no explanation. This film does not hold a candle to Silence of the Lambs or Seven... sorry ..
I appreciated the correction so much lmao. It’s bugged me my whole life whenever movies do that. I said out loud “Revelation. It’s singular, there’s no S” at the same time as Maika Monroe, and then I realized that she said it too, and I felt so vindicated lol. And I can tell you from experience that her character would know that too since she grew up with a very religious mother. I agree completely about the ending, could’ve had it go for literally just a minute longer, and it would’ve been absolutely perfect. But as it is, damn if this movie didn’t blow me away. I walked out of the theater in a daze, couldn’t believe what I watched. And then my mind raced back to all the clues I missed over the course of the movie and realized that I could’ve seen a lot of things coming, and so much lined up perfectly. Longlegs deserves a second viewing, and I can’t wait to see it again! Completely loved it. For me, right now it’s a 9.8/10, but a second watch would probably give it that last 0.2
The movie was F'n awesome. Everytime Lee was framed with empty space behind her I was just waiting for something to jump out at her. It was really awesome to be scared and not have music signal the jump scare. It is definitely a new horror classic and sets a new standard.
@@dan9700It’s an atmospheric horror that makes you feel a sense of dread. It’s not shitty horrors that throws jump scares at you every 10 seconds to keep you engage because it has no substance or story.
This movie fell really flat for me. It was good and Nic Cage did a great job, but I was disappointed in the story direction and the use of Longlegs. It was terribly underwhelming. Sure, there was an eerie presence and some interesting moments. But at the end I couldn’t help but ask myself, “That’s it?” Those that compared this to Silence of the Lambs are def blowing smoke. This is no where in the ballpark of that masterpiece.
FINALLY SOMEONE WHO AGREES. This was supposed to be a psychological thriller and I wasn’t even remotely thrilled. For me, even Nic Cages performance fell flat.
Agreed. Great sense of eeriness and being on the edge of your seat for much of the movie, waiting to be paid out but in the end, the climax didn’t do it for me.
I loved the literal 30 minutes of ads and previews before the movie started. Having ads and trailers be 25% of the movie’s runtime is exactly where things are headed.
Jeremy Jains is my favorite reviewer of all time. His views are that of the people and he does a great job at explaining the jist of the movie without spoiling it. Thank you sir can’t believe it’s been over a decade of reviews
Jeremy, I've been a fan for a long time and you just went up even higher in my books. The "Revelations" misnomer has been a pet peeve of mine for decades. I used to teach at a Bible College and all my students never heard the end of it.
This movie throws so many curveballs at you, every time you feel like your starting to figure out what’s going on it will rip it away from you. It’s a fun movie
Consider BTK and the Golden State Killer. Sometimes one bit of evidence can break a case wide open. Oversimplified, yes. Understating the importance of a key piece of evidence, definitely yes.
All it took was for Longlegs himself to go into her house and leave a note telling her where he is. So glad they brought her on to crack this diabolical mystery!
Bro NIC cage as we know is just legend. I can’t get over his craziness in face off and the cool genuine character he played in the rock. Obviously to many movies to name but I find it crazy one of my top 3 from him is a very less known film THE FAMILY MAN. Definitely just one of my favorite movies. This movie with him definitely stands haha I don’t mind a slow burn movie when it keeps you drawn in
You can figure out the ending towards the middle of the movie but still a great watch for the supernatural thriller that it is. I also agree with Jeremy about the ending being a bit lackluster.
Sadly it felt like it had three different writers: One who was focused on the analytical FBI hunting a serial killer arc, another that wanted a supernatural thriller and the last wanted to combine the two.
It takes a lot to surprise me in film nowadays, but this movie did it. I never could've guessed where it went. Superb. Maika Monroe is always perfection on screen. Nice Cage gave one of his best performances. This thing captivated me.
Thank you for not jumping on the long legs hype train 100%. Whether I like it or not, the reviews thus far have been TOO praiseworthy. I need my expectations tampered a little in the event I feel like I missed something by not finding it the greatest movie of xx timeframe
Honestly, I felt like I had the opposite gripe where they explained too much of what was going on *specifically in that one flashback sequence*. They really spell it out for you, which I think is to the movies detriment since the first half thrives on the dread of the unknown.
I have to say I've watched the trailer like 5 times in hopes I'll find it intriguing enough to go watch but the trailer never made feel like it's worth watching, so i'm glad you've reviewed it, now I'm sure it's worth watching
Osgood excels at crafting atmospheric movies dripping with ominous dread. Longlegs is probably his best movie to date. My theatre was ghost quiet and gasped several times. Maika was outstanding. My fav horror movie of the year though is still Abigail.
I keep watching reviews for this movie and I was especially waiting for you to review it and i am yet to relate to anyone with how I felt with this movie! And it’s amazing that you mentioned silence of the lambs but you did that without the comparison that both movies have! Longlegs is a 2024 version of silence of the lambs but on a more satanic way and with that being the difference, it’s the same movie but a little more boring and less appealing to silence of the lambs. Acting was AMAZING but for it to be praised as much as it is…. Im getting confused tbh lol
Yep spot on I did not enjoy what it ended up being and kinda ruined the whole thing for me because I’m just like we did that whole burn to do the most obvious thing ever
I was disappointed by how un-scary and slow the film was. The trailers were better than the movie. Maybe I'm just tired of the whole devil made me do it trope.
That’s cause they just want you to worship the devil so Hollywood uses these movies like a mantra. Michael Jackson said songs are like mantras and can brain wash you or input images or things in your head
That image at 1:42 ACTUALLY scared me. Im a plumber and I’ve been into some FREAKY places, and one was a dude that looked just like that with a collection of VHS tapes and cameras pointing at dolls that he had all around his home

Just to let ya know I'm not a bot in case you didn't catch on through how stupid and oblivious I talk in the comments section.😃
I was a fan up until the final plot movement was revealed. If it kept going in the direction it started with I think I would’ve walked out of the theatre satisfied. Visually it was great. Casting was great. The sensation of eeriness was perfect. Kept me on the edge of my seat almost the entire time. The ending left me unfulfilled and I think most people felt the same way when the credits came up.
I went to see this in theaters and man, there were like 20 horror/suspense trailers preceding it. There will be no shortage of movies like this in the coming months
I love this analysis! I was really looking forward to this movie, but left the theater underwhelmed… I can’t quite put my finger on it, but something is definitely missing… the marketing for the movie is insane though! I will give them kudos on that!!!! Especially the video of her heart rate accelerating after seeing Nic Cage in makeup!
I liked the creepy atmosphere, but it has too many glaring plot holes. Longlegs started the murder-suicide killings in the mid 1960s, not visiting the Harkers until the 1970s. He had no accomplice that we know of, which implies he did go in the houses, even though the movie explicitly states that he didn't. It took the FBI 30 goddamn years to find one of the dolls that looks exactly like the murdered child? Based on the scene of her mom leaving one of the houses, she doesn't take the dolls with her. So... you know, a whole fuck ton of fingerprints. Speaking of FBI incompetence, did they seriously not figure out that there was someone else present in the house? Our forensics were pretty good by then, there's no reason they shouldn't have been able to tell in decades of killings that someone showed up at the house. This movie feels like they had an idea, but either didn't really think it through all the way, or they had to make the FBI incompetent to make it work.
I also think it's a more realistic view of the FBI. They just aren't that good. We are used to a Hollywood version of them doing heroic things. IRL...pretty shit.
To be honest I think you're forgetting about the entire supernatural aspect. Most of your qualms sound more like overthinking than actual plot holes, especially since Longlegs is CLEARLY receiving otherworldly help from satan. Throughout the movie, it's clear that the Devil, and by extension, Longlegs, know exactly what's going to happen and how. Why is it so unrealistic to assume that satanic magic aided Longlegs in not being discovered via fingerprints, or that the FBI didn't put two and two together with the lifelike dolls. We see in one of the scenes where the random FBI forensics investigator seems completely entranced (and dare I say, enamored) by the Carry Ann replica doll after being exposed to it, it's perfectly reasonable to assume that a similar type of magic would hinder any attempts to capture Longlegs until satan deemed it necessary to fulfill his plan (which we see play out toward the end of the film: Longlegs gets captured, kills himself, "releases" his spirit/energy upon dying at the police station, while leading Lee Harker to the final crime scene on purpose
I think you draw on some pretty good points! Although on rewatch, it’s implied that Lee’s mother isn’t the only accomplice the whole time. When Lee asks Longlegs who ‘she’ (her mother, the current accomplice) is; he replies that her mom is just another one given a choice to destroy what they’ve been given (allow their daughter to be killed) or get down and do dirty work (serve the man downstairs). The fact that no one has found evidence on there being another person in the victim’s house this whole time did take me out a bit though. Then again, the movie takes place in the 90s so my guess is forensics were not all that advanced at the time.
Spolier....The Devil made them do it,no explanation of how or why or when the Devil did his thing but just accept it,dont think about anything & you'll enjoy it but if you ask even one question the entire film falls apart. 2/10
Perkins' previous film (Gretel & Hansel) was a macabre treat but Longlegs is way too much like his previous films: cold and inert and almost nothing like a payoff. Monroe's been in far more entertaining films recently than this lifeless "thriller" which has committed performances from Witt and Cage but once the reasons behind the killings are revealed this sluggish film goes off the rails. When she mentions the killer not even being in the house I was guessing "hypnotic suggestion" or something but then a man who looks as Cage did in this would have to be one hell of a mesmerist to gain entrance in a family home. Supposedly set in the 90's this movie does a poor job letting us know when and where we are. As far as those "codes" that was just a convenient contrivance; it didn't help that Perkins' allowed the camera to settle on what Harker was deciphering for all of 0.5 seconds each time; then much like her "intuitive gift" all of that went by the wayside enroute to a rote slasher-film finish. This was far better than Trap but I still nearly dozed off.
I saw Longlegs today. It definitely lived up to the hype. Creepy, disturbing, and unsettling are words that describe this movie. And the ending is terrific. I so enjoy an ending that doesn't wrap up everything all neat and tidy.
I have to tell you Jeremy. I really enjoy your videos and often I find myself giving you a thumbs up. Today you busted out that crazy Nick Cage improv. Fucking hilarious man Thanks man I really needed that laugh today. Wish I could give you two likes.
I loved this movie. It's one of the best thrillers I've seen since Sinister. I'd give it 8/10, but that's because I didn't like the main character. I avoided all reviews on it until I watched it. I really enjoyed the tension and it's way better than most of the junk that's come out. That ending was so interesting, my heart was going the whole time. I loved that the film was able to hold tension and never shot itself. This year has already had two great films. This and Abigail.
It had the potential to be an all time classic. Don’t know how people will take it… the supernatural element threw me off. Plus there are holes in the plot. I thought they had prepared everything and the acting was beyond terrific. The twist under delivered.
I’ll never feel asleep in a movie theater but this was the closest time. I like the first act, score and lead actress. At the same time felt like the script was made by AI.

Great video!
it reminded me of the 1st season of the x-files
Lecter (Hopkins’ version) was so cartoonishly goofy.
Sequel? Everyone is dead.
Ummm. What did the Bill photo mean lol
Speaking of the X-Files there's a very specific musical theme that pops in at one point that's very reminiscent of some of the creepy musical stings they used to use on that show, which _has to_ have been deliberate, and a neat touch

This is exactly how I feel. I kinda feel like a dumbass for not “getting” it but I honestly think I went in with expectations far too high.
I felt EXACTLY the same
Same here...
You are not alone. Nothing felt fresh here - I felt like from minute 1 I was predicting the scenes as they happened all to end in honestly one of the most deflating endings I’ve ever seen. Not good.
Completely agree. I feel like I must be crazy from seeing all the praise
I can never hear the Happy Birthday song the same after seeing this movie
There's the birthday girl scared me too. Also, if my birthday was on the 14th I'd wanna cry.
Honestly that scene just made me think of Marilyn Monroe or rather Dave Chappelle's impersonation of Marilyn Monroe.
The impression was gold 😂
The nic cage impression was absolutely top tier i enjoyed that way to much😂😂😂😂
Man i love your energy as always

@@FromMagiccold...... There is no need for a review, but I watched it, and I'm nether.
Nic Cage's scream in the car was actually what completely took me out of the movie. The tension was building and letting it release that way was extremely unfulfilling. There were so many jumps in the storyline that were jarring like the movie had been chopped up to save time.
****Spoilers****
The whole aspect of putting souls in the dolls was also very unfulfilling.
💯 agree with you.
I felt exactly the same way. Very lazy phoned in ending...yes Satan is in the dolls.
idk where in the movie you heard "souls" being put into the dolls when its literally said a few times its "Dark Magic" "souls" would be rediculous
@@TheGililgiinteresting take that in a movie where satan is the villain, the concept of souls being a thing is ridiculous
I don't think the photo was meant to be convenient but more a part of destiny that was playing out. Much like her visions, it was all clearly part of some immaculate design wherein she'd be able to bring an end to everything and save that last girl. That's how I saw it anyway.
Nice Cage impression. That should be your Halloween costume this year.

That's because Perkins tried too many different tropes and squeezed them awkwardly together in hopes that a broader audience will be appeased.
The mystery was so good it took them literally one bit of evidence to capture Longlegs after decades evading them.
considering that one bit of evidence was a close up picture of his face, id say yeah, that made sense
He 100% had criminal record are you kidding me
That “one bit” of evidence was that eras version of being caught in 4K
I love horror. May have its issues but it had personality that’s been lacking so hard. The jump scares actually hit.
Sadly it felt like it had three different writers: One who was focused on the analytical FBI hunting a serial killer arc, another that wanted a supernatural thriller and the last wanted to combine the two.

It shows her taking the dolls with her in a scene
I think late night with the devil and this are my favorite horror films of the year so far. Super creative and really good use of the format.
