Great movie, very tense and thought provoking. The girls did a really nice job of staying in their lanes. One starts strong, and the other finishes strong. Very well done!
The Best movie ever! But mormon authorities have turned on these producers and cast pointing fingers at violence on women- lmao- This is every missionary. They are calling em out before high school graduation now.
@@PhyreReighn Hmm. What Mormon authorities would those be? From what I can tell, the leaders of the church have done what they usually do in these entertainment situations--ignore it and make no comment one way or the other.
The "Mr Reeeed" line made me laugh- I could tell she was raised in the church. She delivered it with this genuine, adorably cheesy energy that reminded me of some sister missionaries I'd met once.
The women playing the missionaries were so good. I want to see them in more movies! And that Hugh Grant guy is good too, I see a good future for him. LOL
I loved the way they treated their faith and characters honestly, I'm not religious anymore and not a Mormon but I grew up in an orthodox Seventh Day Adventist church and many elements were similar. It wasn't straight mocking like I had assumed, they actually gave them the opportunity to stand up for themselves and their beliefs and they (and their religion) were hardly the 'enemy' in any way really which is normally how these religious horrors go.
The mind manipulation, gaslighting, power & control of the mormons is spot on! I got away after decades. Ive noted in comments others now calling themselves "progressive mormons" Its so sad people cant let go and run the other way.
So much went into this movie. The research was so accurate, Incredible acting, the cinematography was absolutely magnificent. Nice to see a movie with no CGI that relied on brilliant acting. I’ll have to see it again to pick up more little details.
I served my Mormon mission in Germany/Austria and they actually do pronounce Moroni with “eee” instead of “eye” in German so I felt that in my nostalgia bone.
I absolutely cannot wait to see this! Especially the line that it was strange that her father hasn’t reached out to her. I wonder what he is meaning by that.
ok but fr, lying about pie is in and of itself a true evil. Like what if they were really looking forward to eating that pie, how would they feel when you tell them there never was any pie?
I love how Hugh Grant goes deeper on the script and how he would translate it into acting... And how his co-star could react to make a good scene... Like a good throw or serve in a ping-pong. He's method of acting is really good.
Thoroughly enjoyed watching this movie especially how well the characters played off each other and all the little details. Definitely gonna rewatch it a number of times
I am watching cus it’s A24 and cuz Sophie Thatcher is in it. I hope Hugh Grant was easy to work with for this movie with him apparently being hard to work with
I’m sure you probably are already aware of this or maybe it’s just great casting, but Sophie Thatcher plays the younger version of Juliette Lewis on the Showtime series Yellowjackets (both seasons are on Paramount+ w/ Showtime, the first is on Netflix). She’s very talented - I first saw her in an indie sci-fi film called Prospect (also currently on Paramount+ as well as Peacock). She co-stars with Jay Duplass and Pedro Pascal; it came out in 2018. The casting news came out about Pascal to play Joel in The Last of Us afterwards and I strongly pointed towards this movie as being the reason I believed he could really pull off Joel well, but also thought Thatcher would be an actress to watch out for. She definitely doesn’t disappoint in Yellowjackets (skip the previews, just dive right in - along with Thatcher and Lewis, it also stars an ensemble cast of Ella Purnell, Cristina Ricci, Melanie Lynskey, Jasmin Savoy-Brown, Courtney Eaton, Tawny Cypress, Sophie Nélisse, and Samantha Hanratty… basically a long list of actors who are beloved established actresses with 20 years of filmography or more, and the up-and-coming next generation of young starlets with Thatcher and Purnell and Savoy-Brown being the most established so far).
He was so threatening/intimidating because he came across so non threatening and gracious but these 2 women know he's a psychopath and he's in complete control of the situation. He showed no signs of aggression or intent to intimidate or physically harm them he just said here go right ahead and walk through either of these doors to your doom. This guy who talked so much the whole time when he was silent it was unsettling.
Chloe East was really good in this, she was a totally different person by the end. A great job. All the cast were fantastic though, as was the film, what a trip!
@@TheRealHelenaDeluca in the end she figured out his whole schtick - how can you say she isn't smart? she lacks some experience that the other character had - since she was born into the cult - but eventually she figures everything out - showing that she is actually smart.
This is a great review. For the Heretic. That is funny. That Hugh Grant played with the lines. The director had to ask Chloe. To current him. Sophie and Chloe are good actress's. Can't wait to see this movie. I think Reed was living in his own world. Another version of the matrix. Hope this movie has a chance at the award shows.
@@playerpagea lot of what he said wasn’t inherently “psychotic”. Institutionalised religions do build on one other and are exploiting their believers. I mean that was the whole theme of the film as well institution vs true faith.
@@camelliasinensis219 It wasn't the subject that was psychotic, it was his motivation. Therefore, agreeing with *him* (even if you generally agree with the *subject*) means you buy into his goals. Yuck.
i felt like the point of the film is that intellectualism is not sufficient: if you simply deduce religions are fake and you have nothing else to fill that void with - you will become a monstrous nihilist. It kind of demonstrates that despite being factually wrong, religion or spirituality does play some role in keeping people tethered to their humanity and empathy. as an atheist, i personally don't need either religion or spirituality for that - but many people do. in other words, "truth" isn't just about what is factually true - but also about the values we choose to live our lives by. Reed is technically correct about everything he says but he still lacks a certain aspect that the girls (despite being "fooled" by a cult) possess which is empathy

He might not like the aspect of fame that involves interviewing and promoting a film, but he sure had great fun playing that role. Its evident in his performance. You can love what you do and hate what comes with it. Its like how people can love their job but hate the staff meetings.

Oh, it absolutely was. Mr. Reed had obviously studied Mormonism extensively, and would almost certainly know how to pronounce Moroni (who is one of the most important figures in Mormon Theology, there's a statue of Moroni on the top of most Mormon temples).
I think Mr. Reed did mishear her. It ties into their eventual salvation; as thoroughly meticulous as he is, he makes mistakes. Confusing an obscure disease he's never heard of with something so widely known to be horrendous as Lou Gehrig's Disease, I think he felt some genuine remorse for a moment there. By the time it comes up again he's figured out how to make it bend to his narrative, but I believe that was an honest mistake he made.
