The scene with Demi Moore trying to get ready for a date but fixating on her perceived flaws to the point of losing it should warrant an Oscar nom alone. Freakin’ heartbreaking to watch.

@jonathan13co The point of the comparison is that both movies analyse the self-destruction caused by the pursuit of self fullfillment, not to mention the clever usage of sound effects and video-editing. "Requiem for a Dream" does feel like the better movie in comparison because the plot goes in multiple directions, each with a different horrible outcome, while in "The Substance" we have only one straight path going from bad to worse.

I saw The Substance the week after its official release date. This movie is still stuck in my head and still has me talking to people about it. I genuinely can't remember the last time a movie has been stuck in my head for this long. Usually, if a movie is in my mind for a long time, I start nitpicking at things I didn't like about it, but this movie is the exact opposite. Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley absolutely smashed this. There's just that one scene where she's in the bathroom like an hour from lights up on her biggest moment and then... Her tooth falls out, and she has this crazed smile... It was awesome.
Part of me thinks that the constant references to "You are one" meant that actually Elisabeth was always in control of Sue, the way she behaved as Sue was a reflection of how little she valued herself. I think we see that when towards the end she immediately regrets attempting to terminate Sue proclaiming that it will be their "biggest moment".
The only thing I have questions about are when Sue is somehow brought back whilst Elisabeth is still conscious, and why does she seem to have superhuman strength? Was Sue, at that point, some sort of empty vessel? Flesh and blood but lacked soul which is why she is just a rageful monster (although her rage is understandable)

"You are one" can also be interpreted as substance abuse like drugs or alcohol in general. Once you're on it all feels fun and good, and once you're off it you say to yourself that you're a different person, but the reality is that the one that makes the bad choices and the one that regrets those choices, are the same person.

👆. For me, not a massive horror fan, who saw the film with a horror fan, all the material about Elizabeth hating what Sue is doing to her yet not able to stop self-administering The Substance is the strength and draw of this film. As Jeremy said, "Substance abuse" and the comment above about "The picture of Dorian Gray", they really indicate what elevates this film above slasher movies - in fact elevates "The Substance" above most movies. Dennis Quaid having the time of his life is joyous too.

This movie was insane, it had an intriguing premise that I thought could make for some good body horror but I was not prepared for the kind of experience that I got
Demi Moore gives a very engaging performance as this woman who is a very famous icon but is nervous because she’s getting up there in age and is fearful that fame is gonna reject her for it, throughout the movie you’re just like “No, why are you doing this? It’s terrible for you” But at the same time you just see how incredibly self conscious she is due to the soulless nature of the life of a celebrity and you understand why she’d be led to feel that way, there’s 1 scene in particular where she’s getting dressed up in front of a mirror that you get to see to the full extent of how self conscious she is about herself and how much she stresses over the fact that she believes the world is getting ready to toss her aside now that she’s not young and beautiful anymore, it’s quite a sad journey to watch actually, and special props to the actress who played the younger version of her, she was great, starting off as just a younger version of Demi Moore’s character and ultimately doing all the things she wanted to do but is now too old for but quickly divulging into her own separate entity altogether, she very quickly became what I believe to be the more engaging of the 2, and Dennis Quaid was so great as this complete soulless dickhead agent and he just looked like he was having a blast, I also liked that the movie had a set list of rules for how The Substance works but it feels like it’s not too complicated, so there’s more to it then just 1 injection, younger self appears and that’s it but it’s not like a complete clusterfuck of complicated rules either, not overly simplified but I feel like you’ll get the jist of it
And now we get to the big one, the body horror, this movie is absolutely disgusting in every sense of the word but in all the best ways, just the initial way of how the second version of Demi Moore’s character is created was nasty enough but the movie just keeps elevating the gore more and more as it went on and creates an absolute trauma inducing gore-fest that is effective in every sense of the word, it feels like everybody involved watched David Cronenberg’s The Fly, they said you can’t make something more gross than that and the director was like “Are you challenging me?” Because Jesus Christ this movie is nasty, so many times it just goes to places that’s even worse than the last place it went and I’m like “Holy shit, how can a movie possibly be *THIS* gory?”
I’d say my only flaws are that early on I found the way the movie was edited a little flashy for my taste, it’s very jittery, blares the music over it quite loudly, it did calm down as the movie went on but yeah, early on it was a bit much to handle, the other is that I feel like the movie was a bit too long, this is like a full 2 and a half hour experience and I feel like for the type of story they’re telling it could’ve been shaved down by about 20 minutes or so, it didn’t need to be like super short but at the same time I don’t think it needed to be like an epic either
But as a whole this was a super effective horror experience, it truly has been a while since I’ve said that a horror movie has traumatized me but I mean that in all the best ways, the performances were all great, the body horror was amazingly horrific and ultimately this is a deeply disturbing body horror experience that I’m not gonna forget anytime soon. 9/10

The movie itself establishes that Elizabeth has no control or recollection of Sue's actions and experiences, which makes taking the substance a deal with zero benefits to Elizabeth, which in turn makes it absolutely stupid that she doesn't stop the deal after the first week.

Yeah, like if she follows the instructions to the letter, but gets a call or an email, “Uh, there seems to be a problem with your dosage.”

I doubt the actors will be nominated (even though they absolutely should) but if the make up does not get a nomination, that’ll be a travesty.

Came here to support, but this is a rare moment I'm actually excited about a new film...so, I'll be exiting the vid early so I don't get spoiled. ❤️
It's been a long time since a trailer has appealed to my cinephile self! Lol, if only I could afford to see it in the theater!
The Substance does kinda give me Neon Demon vibes, which for me, is a fantastic thing! Such a disturbing, well crafted, richly surprising and poignant horror film, with a legitimate indie film aura.
I said it before, but one more time for posterity or something...
    CONGRATULATIONS! 🎊👏💐
I seem to recall your previous "thank you" acknowledgement for hitting 1mil? We know, my friend, it one of the reasons we stick around. 😉 Keep doing whatchu do. Genuine will win out almost every time. 💪♥️
