Brutes have always been smart, just undisciplined. They managed to achieve space travel before the covenant found them after triggering ww3. The shock rifle was even built by them and likely is based on ancient brute designs from before their ww3.

I do like a lot about the banished but it does feel like they reduce a lot of the covenant races to red and black = bad guys, things like Colony and Yap Yap would hit way harder if they were surrounded by the traditional purple covenant colors. One of the big reasons infinite felt so empty for me was because there was never any purple metal! Get that cheap red paint and steel away from my aliens.
