  • In this massive retrospective, containing both of Octo's previous videos on Wonder Egg Priority as well as over an hour of new content, Octo tries to analyze what actually went on with Wonder Egg Priority from beginning to end, including the special finale episode which aired in June of 2021 following the series conclusion. This video has been over a full year in the making, and with it finished, hopefully Octo's Corner can continue on a more consistent and frequent basis from now on. Sit down, grab a snack, and enjoy the longest deep dive in the channel's history. It's a lot to process, but it's finally finished. Part 3 starts at 1:12:00.

Insanely well crafted series about wonder egg, although it is my favorite series I do see it’s flaws in its final. This video showed me a lot of details I never really noticed and look at this show from a different perspective. Once again, this video was amazing and It is not getting the credit it deserves!

For the sexism thing I like the idea of it being a cover up, but also I still find that weird that no one, not a single character, ever say anything about those blatant sexist remarks
There's nothing wrong about a sexist character or a character saying something sexist, but that not a single other character ever disagree kind of make it feels like it's more the autor's opinion than the character's

I agree. I'm still not 100% sure I'm right about everything in this analysis, and I do think that while the writers likely didn't mean for it to come accross that way, they definitely should have made more of an effort to call the Accas out on what they said or at the very least how they said it. At least more than just having Rikka say 'yeah! Don't discriminate!' one time.

Really great video series!! I never really understood the overall show by the ending and never really thought about revisiting it till now. I’d really like to see you do a video analysis on Puella Magi Madoka Magica because you do so well at deconstructing the themes and comprehensive narratives of anime series in a really creative and funny video style. The creators also released a trailer for the new movie coming out soon which I’m excited for lol.

This is gonna be long. Tl;dr at the bottom
I’ll preface this by saying, that WEP was coming out as I was finishing college (so basically the most stressful point of my life so far), so my views on the show may be a little skewed.
Still, I feel like I’m coming at this from a fairly similar perspective, having been enamored by WEP’s attention to detail, and its many layers (one of my college papers was basically a 3 page dissection of the opening shots). Granted, I haven’t rewatched the show quite as much as you, but I’d gone out of my way to read everything I could find on its production, including the 1hour gameshow and the audio-only episode.
Now why would I do all that?
Maybe, similarly to you, I was trying to defend the show from the beating it got online and offline (I forced some of my friends to watch it). Or maybe I was just trying to justify it for myself, justify me liking the show, and even having it be one of my top 3 of all time (alongside Madoka and 3gatsu).
Bottom line is, I’ve spend A LOT of time thinking about WEP, arguing about it (mostly offline, I’m kinda internet-shy), and just trying to make sense of it for me. Why it clicked for me, and not for others. And maybe while I was at it, trying to convince anyone that it was the masterpiece I’ve perceived it as.
I do admit, that I think you did an amazing job breaking down the scene-by-scene flow of the first 2 episodes. I myself have never actually thought that the wonderkillers might be nightmares faced by the main girls’ friends, and frankly, I do believe this is correct (also it is SOO gratifying hearing from anyone but myself that the egg girls’ problems are not supposed to be related to the main girls’ ones, I feel like everyone misses this). You did kinda lose me in the second half though.
“A study in giving up”, honestly, I couldn’t have phrased it better myself. THIS is the soul of the show. The idea that you can only do so much in this world. See, I think that’s also why some of these societal problems were brought up but never “solved”. The show isn’t about what we can do to solve these problems, it’s more about what we can do to lessen their impact on those closest to us.
None of us are going to overthrow capitalism, end systemic racism, or gender inequality. But we can be a rock for those most affected by them. Have you seen “Everything, Everywhere all at once”? I feel like it scratches a similar itch to WEP (albeit it is also very different from WEP). Those big ideas, the multiverse, AI, sexism, suicide are all thrown at us and meanwhile we’re srill struggling in our own lives and still struggling to help one another, and we have to listen to everyone and everything, and it’s all suffering and... But we can’t deal with all those problems. We’re just individuals. And individuals can only provide solutions to individual problems. Not systemic ones.
And so we wander aimlessly, surrounded by despair, waiting to be picked up by Thanatos, and when we are picked, it is only a warrior of Eros (honestly those names are stupid) that can save us.
So, what is frill? Or, rather, Thrill? I’m about to make a lot of connections that might just be random, so bear with me. Akka and Ura-Akka. 2 Men, crafting the perfect human teenage girl. Patriarchy? But there’s more to it. In Japan, it is not uncommon to have 2 accounts on social media, one main account (akkaunto) and a second, anonymous account (ura-akkaunto). This may be just coincidence, but it makes me think of social media, or rather of the general connectivity provided by the modern world (I do believe WEP is a look at hypermodernity). So, we have 2 old dudes, that create an image of a perfect girl for their entertainment, without any regard for what harm it may cause, and releasing it into the internet, despite the AI in question having a couple “bugs”. So, patriarchy (there’s also the fact that they work for a eugenicsy, capitalist corporation, so patriarchy and capitalism) creating an image that is impossible to attain, of perfect femininity, that never ages. Sidenote, the birth of Frill is VERY similar to how the birth of Aphrodite is usually portrayed, a literal female goddess of love, a “perfect” woman. In that context, I believe that Akkas are not necessarily the villains, but are just two people who noticed what a fucked-up world they’ve built for the next generation, and are trying their best to help (by inviting the girls to the garden and helping them work through their issues with the expertise they have, while also maybe looking for ways to fight Frill). They are still burdened by the views of society before them, and frankly it’s weird that the dialogue in episode 4 is so quickly dismissed, but that is how I see it. Akkas are just trying to help, in their own way, the people most hurt by their actions.
The internet, and more generally, modernity itself exposes us to many more societal and personal issues to everyone of us. Every person’s life is as deep as our own, and might as well be happening in a different world line. They may be dealing with their wonderkillers, fighting them every day, but we would be none the wiser, unless we really dove into others’ lives. From the outside they could just look like... an egg. It’s not until we break it that we may see what’s really going on inside. But the “Thrill” of having all that insight, all that available through hypermodernity... it can drive a person insane. Or rather, “tempt them to die” in a unique, previously unseen way.

    • @MaelstromEye
      @MaelstromEye 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Okay, I think that’s enough of establishing themes. Let’s get to what issue I took with your interpretation.
“Ai is not the main character of wonder egg priority” - I think that’s just plain wrong. Professor Viral made an amazing video that I feel disproves this, or at least shows that this takes the show a bit too literally. Yes, we are supposed to watch the show as if Ai was not the main character, due to the very “you’re not special” point the show tries to hammer into us (and the characters), but she is still the heart and soul of the series. In fact, as those more high-level concepts and ideas are put in front of Ai and Rika they just get more frustrated, and the abrupt nature in which their respective stories end, while Neiru’s supposedly continues, are a testament to the authors attempts to bring the characters down.
Ai is not the main character of the Frill storyline. That is plain as day. But there’s a lot more to WEP than just Frill’s story. It is not “like Terminator”. Just as all the egg girls’ problems are only there to set the stage, so is the Frill plot. This one is just more important because it’s Neiru wonder egg plot. In the 13th episode (I refuse to call it the special because it obviously was meant to be a part of the 12 episode run before they inserted that recap) we see a wonder egg story brought to an end - Neiru succumbs to death. That’s why Ai is later looking for her in the Akkas’ garden, because she might be in one of the eggs.
By the end of episode 12 Ai has mostly recovered from her traumas. Unless... she didn’t. Well she sure thinks she has. WEP shows here an extreme portrayal of how we are not the main character in other people’s lives, and how we may just be a blip in their larger worlds. Neiru’s story sure is big and confusing, way bigger than Ai. But it’s not Ai’s story. It’s not WEP’s story either. It’s a boiling down of the idea that the world is big and scary and incomprehensible, and how even for people who we may consider to be friends, we may just be a small footnote at the end of a chapter. Ai was furious at Neiru for that. She expected more of her. And in the crucial moment, when neiru asked Ai for help, when she literally called out to her, Ai threw her away, just as she did with Koito. So what, in the end, Ai learned nothing? How does that make her the main character?
This is not a show about solutions. There are no answers here. There are just characters, who all come to their own conclusions based on their own flawed outlook on the world. I think that’s why so many people proclaimed the show a dumpster fire. WEP did it to itself. It raised all those problems, and didn’t give a single answer. And this is the soul of the show. Sometimes, we can give answers, but we refuse to. We may push people away, refuse their help, isolate ourselves... But it’s all part of life. We can’t dwell too long on past mistakes. Ai sure doesn’t, by the end of the show.
I’m certain she is well aware that she made a mistake by throwing Neiru away. But she doesn’t blame herself for that. It is all a part of life. Neiru fought her wonderkiller, and lost. Her world didn’t get a visit from a warrior of Eros. But one cannot be expected to always be on guard. That’s the kind of messed up world we live in. It’s easy to see ourselves as victims of this world. Sometimes we are.
Of course Ai wasn’t healed by the end of episode 12. She has just begun allowing herself to work through everything. We see her crying in episode 13, her mom talking about “taking a break”, because that is exactly what she needs. Some time to work through all those emotions. And by the end of the series, I think she succeeds. She wears a mint hoodie, somewhat of a mix between her blue and yellow coloring, finally showing her two personas, the happy and the traumatized one, at peace. It is only now, that she would be truly able to help Neiru. It is now, that she is able to help people not to defeat her own darkness inside, but to also fight others’ demons.
I effing hate nihilism, still I cant help but think here of the Untermensch and the ubermensch. The Untermensch helps others and denies themselves happiness because they value themselves so little, that it’s not that much of an expense in their mind to sacrifice themselves to others. Sure, the good they do might be as good as the truly generous kind of good, but it doesn’t come from an honest place. The ubermensch however, recognizes the sacrifices they have to make, and decides to make them anyway, just out of the goodness of their heart, while simultaneously feeling the weight of their sacrifices to the full.
I feel like I tangled myself up right now. Let me back up a bit. Throughout the series Ai is thrown into a worl of mass connectivity and suffering. She begins the series by being deathly afraid of this, isolating herself and, frankly, on the brink of self-exit game. The series gradually throws more at Ai, and even allows her to make some friends while she’s exploring all those worlds. It ends with her finally able to navigate the dream and real world, with her being able to make a positive impact. But to get there, she had to face all those unsolvable problems, both of society, and of philosophy. And she became a better person, in spite of not being able to give answers to those questions. She... gave up on answering them. To stop on the “Terminator” story and insist that it is the main idea of WEP, that it is all about those high level concepts... To me it’s just wrong.
Aaaaanyway it’s about to be 3AM where I live, so it’s probably time to hit the hay. I have no idea if any of this made any sense, and frankly I’d be extremely surprised if anyone manages to read it all, much less make any sense of it. I may have given you some heat in the latter part, but honestly, yours is the best breakdown of this series I have seen so far, so A+ on that. As you can see, this series means a lot to me and I am SO tired of everyone misinterpreting it, that when I see someone being so clos to what I consider the “correct” view (if such a thing even exists in art analysis), I just have to take my chances to convert them :3. I recognize that my opinion is very flawed and biased, and that your interpretation is just as valid as mine. This show however is such a fun puzzle to attempt to solve, despite all the hate it gets (kind of like yuuki yuuna tbf). I honestly believe this show is a masterpiece, but one that doesn't make it easy to be liked, which is why I think, so many people just don't bother trying, and honestly, I cant blame them.
Tl;dr : I think WEP is a story of hypermodernity and its effects on the human psyche, as portrayed by Ai’s many struggles. It is not a show about answers, which is in part why I think that making it be about whatever Japan Plati was up to is wrong, as this plot is relatively linear. Throughout the show Ai grows into someone capable of helping others just out of kindness, instead of for the wrong reasons. She also overcomes her main character and victim complex. The show is ultimately about her journey to becoming not a savior of the world, but just an individual, capable of caring for herself and for others.

So....I did in fact read all of that, and I'll probably be doing it again. Forgive me for responding to this lengthy and well thought out argument with one that is...less...long... but it is what it is. There are definitely some points made here that I frankly feel DUMB for not including. Capitalism, the patriarchy, and the multi account thing being the reasoning for Ura-Akka and Akka's names. I think the symbolism there is definitely accurate to what they were going for, and that was so well put that I'm convinced you're 100% right about it.
Honestly, I also think you're right about what you said in regards to Ai's storyline too, but there is one thing I can't agree with you on, so I'm going to bring it up here real quick. Neiru didn't die..? And furthermore, is unable to die, being a robot and all. The conflict between whether or not she's a robot or a clone is definitely something about the show I think is intentionally misleading to the audience, but from my understanding, there was never any indication that Neiru died, and all the hints in the first few episodes lead to her being a robot. If she is, that means she's the same as Frill in that there's no possible way for her to "die" and get put in an egg. I refuse to believe the same show that asks us to believe what it does about Frill then also wants the complete opposite side of the spectrum to apply selectively because that's what makes the writing make sense. Neiru is just gone. There is no thematic element to it, and even if there were it's not something that we have any say or knowledge on because the reason is tied to a lack of a season two. She's sequel bait, and the writers can't decide what to do with her. I feel like it's okay to call that a flaw.
Ultimately I think we're mostly saying the same things but in different ways. I said that Wonder Egg Priority doesn't have all the answers because of creative conflict, deadlines, and creative differences, and you said it didn't have all the answers because that was the entire point. My approach was to decide what I think based on what the writers wanted to say. "How close did you guys come to achieving your goal with this work?" I tried as best I could to take a step back and give Wonder Egg the benefit of hindsight and I did as much research as I could into it, and what I found leads me to believe that production issues ultimately robbed it of its cohesiveness and that the writers all then did everything they could to make it work anyway, and make it seem like that was the plan all along. I don't think it was, but I think that because of how I view the other works of the lead writer on WEP. Nothing else he's ever made is as smart as you're convinced WEP is, and he's never eluded to something that complicated being a goal with this project. That's why despite the quality of your arguments, I still standby my belief that the Ai's story one of many, and that none of them are any more or less important than the other, we just see more or less of certain characters and so it's easier to believe they are. The most important story to me is the one with the highest stakes, which is why I phrased it the way I did. It's a scrambled egg, but that doesn't make it all bad. I just wanted to see what it is so I could see what it isn't and come to peace with liking it. It's not a top 3 for me, I honestly would give it a solid 7/10 or a B+ by letter grade. That's how I see it, and I wanted to encourage others to see it in their own ways too, but ultimately to say that it's a flawed but interesting little show with some cool ideas, deep moments, and great animation. I think it could have been better, but I'm okay with what we got.
What you did, however, is arguably more impressive. You took something that on the face of it is a bit of a mess, and you made that mess look like a work of art. You found meaning in it that may very well go beyond what was actually intentional, but what is intentional doesn't matter. You found meaning in it. It's yours. It's there because you put it there. So if you believe this is a masterpiece, I don't think you're wrong. I think that's what WEP is to you, and it really resonated with you and you were able to make sense of the things I couldn't. It was genuinely really wonderful reading all the ideas and interpretations you had for it. Ultimately, it's like you said, our viewpoints are similar, but have their differences. That alone means that at least most of it, the parts we agree on, is probably intentional.
We live in a time where something is either good or bad, and I don't like that culture at all. TLOU Part 2 wasn't a masterpiece or a train wreck, it was average, it was a 5/10. People just could not accept that and so created reasons for it to be one or the other, and that I think is a big issue. I think it's okay to like something flawed, or to know something isn't a masterpiece but love it anyway. That's how I feel about Wonder Egg. I think it's flawed, but I like it anyway. It's great at asking big questions, and it creates conversations like this one, which I think is fantastic!
Thanks for giving me your side of the story and for the high praise of calling this the best WEP analysis you've seen, that is really nice of you and I appreciate it. The next video is already done so I can't put you in the special thanks for it, but keep an eye out for future videos.

Thank you! Yea, at this point I’m 50/50 on whether this show is actually this 10/10, or if this is just my massive cope. I choose to believe the former, but I often find myself doubting. There is a LOT wrong with this show (I personally take the most issue with the R scene of Momoe’s bf, this is plain unexcusable), but there is so much more RIGHT. Speaking of wrong:
Neiru’s story drove me insane. I really enjoy piecing narratives together from scraps of, but man, was this one frustrating.
Ok so admittedly the conclusion that Neiru dies is something that was born completely of my obsessive overanalysis of the show. I feel like there are a couple hints, first of all, her last shot shows her laying on grass, while Kotobuki said in an earlier episode that a field of flowers lies between life and death, so that’s one thing. The other is that she “became friends” with Frill, as suggested by their last conversation. I believe she actually “downloaded” Frill, and her talking in two voices at the start of episode 13 is her having conversation with the Frill inside of her (Neiru’s is the responsible voice, and Frill’s is the selfish one). So, Neiru is a "better" idea of femininity (a proper girlboss, if you may) , that's dragged down by the "bad" one. She is still flawed, but instead of living to hurt other people, she lives to help them. Now what I assume happens off screen, is Neiru therapeutizes Frill to the point of exhaustion, and eventually lies down in the field of flowers, so, departs. Ai also looks for her in the egg dispenser, suggesting that at least in some other timeline she did go through with the deed. It also makes thematically sense for Ai, who saw one of her friends commit suicide at the start, and at the conclusion of the story, showcasing how differently she reacts thanks to the events of the show. It’s just a shame that they picked the one with the most convoluted and confusing story. Admittedly her “dying” and being gone (physically, metaphysically, psychologically or in whatever way) is the same from Ai’s perspective, but hey, that just supports the argument that hers is the main story;)

Still liking the joined-together format! Missed opportunity to fix the seeno-elves bit :P? Let's consider it a deliberate decision to include an apparent mistake, that's on-theme for the show. And man, you can just say you didn't like things, it's okay! Overall, I'm just very glad someone gets it wrt the sexism and/or transphobia criticism. Like... if someone prefers the "haha I'm a villain, not a bigot" kind of antagonist, fine, but it shouldn't be unacceptable for a writer to disagree.
Regardless, I think the comparison I'd make is Texhnolyze. Texh is about physicality and especially about physical pain; WEP is more about emotional trauma but it uses a physical depiction for it. They both use a lot of shocking imagery to get that across, and they both have confusing, difficult endings. But where Texh is gnostic (and how!), WEP occupies the drastically under-explored fourth space: pistis over gnosis, but materialism over spiritualism (... I think, it depends on seeing the girls' journey into the spirit-realm of the egg world as being a bad decision, which is kind of ambiguous. It has upsides and downsides).
Sadly it remains a difficult anime to recommend; there are plenty of good stories with badly-received and/or unfinished endings, but WEP's strictly worse than most of them. To bring up two more examples, Flip Flappers and the Houseki no Kuni anime GOD PLEASE I NEED S2 PLEASE I'LL BE A GOOD GNOSTIC I'LL FIGHT THE DEMIURGE PLEASE-

As always, I really appreciate the insight you bring, I would honestly have never thought to compare it to Texhnolyze but that's honestly pretty genius now that I stop and really think about it. Missed opportunity to talk about Texhnolyze on this channel, that. Oh well, I'm sure the day will come eventually. Also, you're dead on about the seeno-evils being an intentional decision! Once I notice that genuine mistake shortly after I finished part one, I had a sort of epiphany about it. You'll notice that as the video goes on, more "mistakes" like that start to happen. I miss pronounce other names, leave certain sections un-edited, that kind of thing. Some of them are genuine because that kind of thing happens in a big video like this, but most are actually very intentional, like the Sawaki/Sasaki thing. I thought it would be really interesting to kind of have the video itself represent the way I feel about the series as a whole: It starts off really well put together and detailed and then slowly falls apart toward the end. Including mistakes is definitely on brand for WEP, so I was looking forward to seeing if anybody picked up on that, should have known you would catch it straight away! :D Granted, WEP did it's best to pull itself together I think, and if I'm being honest I don't dislike it, I just don't think it lived up to its potential. I think it's a really good mixed bag of things I like and things I don't, which made this video really interesting to make. It was definitely a challenge, but I'm glad that I decided to try it now that all is said and done. Thanks again for leaving that comment way back when that inspired me to take another look at Wonder Egg, I really appreciate it! Come to think of it, I actually own Flip Flappers on Blu-Ray, but I only watched like...I dunno the first 2 or so episodes because I had a lot going on at the time. Maybe I'll give that another go someday...

Not really invested in the lack of chameleon buddy analysis but I refuse to miss out on an opportunity to mention Sheriff Rango, the best chameleon in animation who is not just named the last four letters of the word chameleon.

Rango is my favorite American-made animated film of all time. If you want a Rango video, just ask. I'll take any excuse I can use to make a video essay about how great that movie is.

Yes. However, that character is being actively abused by Frill, not participating by choice in the program. He wasn't scouted by the Accas, but was misgendered by Frill because of his appearance. That's my theory. So no, it's not the most respectful use of a trans character, but I think beyond the literal implications of that we can look to how meeting him affects Momoe to see a positive image.
