  • I dove head-first into this game and may have hit the concrete instead.
    Here it is! My Kingdom Hearts video! This project has been in the works for over a year now thanks to reasons explained in the video, but I'm very happy with how it turned out and I hope you all enjoy it! This is probably the most time and effort I've put into a video yet, though it may not seem that way.
    Huge thanks to Octo for making the thumbnail, and to @JustazagZ for editing some parts of this for me. Go give them both some love!
    What did you think of the video? Do you agree with my opinion? Have another game you think I should play? Want to call me a name? Let me have it in the comments below!

      I'd argue that KH2 is the better game to start with & to watch a TH-cam storyline video until you reach KH2. When I was a kid, I began with KH2. I didn't know anything about the story, so I ignored most of it & the gameplay was strong enough to stand on its own.

      @dissidentworkshop8851 KH2 without context plays out like this weird mystery fever dream tbh, and yet it somehow manages to fully catch you up on all of the important events of KH1 (but not quite CoM, although only the endings of CoM ultimately matter to the overarching plot). It might actually be the most convoluted way to experience the series while still being an enjoyable experience, because of the sheer amount of questions that are asked and answered in the span of one game.

    the irony of your last comment about Kingdom Hearts being the friends we made along the way is actually inherently true when it comes to the scope of the series too lol

    Wild seeing somebody genuinely enjoying the Pooh world just to escape the Squeenix melodrama. Understandable, but wild. And ironic.

    "Squeenix"
    Correction: the first Kingdom Hearts was created prior to Enix buying Square, the corner of the box art and company splash logos on KH1 all say "Sqauresoft" for the original PS2 release.

The ending introspective made me realize all over again why I loved this game series so much. I hope to see more videos like this on your channel, all the best.

    Kingdom Hearts 1 is my favorite game of all time. I like it more than 2 even though 2 has a better battle system. The thing I hate most in KH1 is the same problem I have with the rest of the series - they really don't explain light and darkness well enough, especially in the English version. There's a video essay out there where, in the Japanese version, light and darkness aren't necessarily the same as good and evil. Darkness is just anything that can cut off relationships and community, like personal ambition or depression. Characters who use "light" can do evil things, like with what happens in Birth By Sleep. The Disney villains end up using darkness since it's easy for them to care about themselves, but other characters like Riku are tragically tempted into villainy too. The story makes way more sense when you look at it this way, and the English translators probably obscured this to make it more "mysterious" or "wonderous". I don't blame anyone who doesn't like the series based on this.

    Kingdom Hearts is one of those series where you just kinda turn off your brain, go along with what’s being said and have fun. There’s a reason why the first game resonates so well with people who played it as kids vs people who play it for the first time when they’re adults, and that’s why I think. We think too hard about some stuff you know?

    • @TheMissingLettr
      @TheMissingLettr  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Definitely! If I had played this game as a kid I would have been absolutely captivated by the dreamlike adventure of it all, and I very much envy those who have such a deep rooted connection to this series.

    you know, I see this on my youtube recommended and thought it would be a nice background noise for playing games but I relate to your experience with kingdom hearts. I don't think the game really clicked with me until I got to the second half of the game. I think it's when I understood the combat and really started thinking about the journey that I was having with these characters that I finally started to like the game. KH1 is flawed, but it has heart and that can sometimes carry a series further than it normally would

  • @yat282
    @yat282 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

    I also played the series for the first time when I saw how KH fans reacted to Sora being added to Smash. Each game in the series has it's own flaws, but honestly I think that those flaws make them better. The story is a mess, but it's a wonderful mess. The series is very unapologetically itself, and I love that about it.

    You played a game that is 21 years old, and expect it to follow conventions that didn't exist until years after it came out? Compare it to other games that released in 2002, and on the ps2, and its easy to see why it stood out. This game released before using the right analogue stick was the standard way to control the camera, you used L2 and R2 to rotate the camera. Morrowind released in 2002, and even it didn't have quest objective markers. The game had fluid combat, which if you look at other early ps2 games stands out a lot. The graphics for the time were top-notch.

    • @TheMissingLettr
      @TheMissingLettr  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      It's true that I was initially hard on the game for being clunky gameplay-wise, but you'll never see me bashing an older game for its graphics. I grew up playing games from a generation or two behind the current one. Kingdom Hearts' visuals were amazing, and it cleans up really well on PS5.

    • @ballerinafromtheblock

    NGL the line "Maybe the real kingdom hearts was the friends we made along the way..." made me tear up but I do agree with all your opinions. Idk why I find Kingdom Hearts 1 difficult to play but I aced playing the second one. The improvement shown on the second one is far better than the first in terms of combat, but for the lore part, good luck.

It's honestly one of my favorite games to date, and I would love to see someone else's perspective on it. Re:com is alright but the combat is completely different than the mainline games. The story for Re:com is also a bit confusing, but a great story nonetheless.

    • @jeffboy4231
      @jeffboy4231 24 วันที่ผ่านมา

      i will always like kingdom hearts alot more than any dark souls game tbh
      i think ds combat is just really bad and too basic. kingdom hearts at high difficulties has the really good feeling of overcoming a boss but it feels alot better than in dark souls, because the combat is fun in the first place, and it wasn't you just bashing your head at a wall until you can dodge the wall... it was most likely you changing some things around, trying different strategies and winning that way.
      when i used the lightning protection accessories in the ursula fight it easily became a first try fight, where beforehand i would've likely never beaten it

    • @jesterjaded73
      @jesterjaded73 8 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@jeffboy4231 These reasons are why I preferred the Sekiro formula over Fromsoft's DS one; the combat is fast, engaging, and highly punishing if you're not on-point, but the game does give you multiple options with prosthetic tools and mobility instead of just railroading you into parrying all the time (although some bosses it's required).

    I laughed when your friends said that they had never beat the game. I beat KH1 last year, after playing every other game except Dream Drop Distance & KH3, but not for a lack of trying. Got a KH 1.5 at sale, but it only ran Chain of Memories, got KH1 later for PS2 but my RCA connector part of the TV got damaged so I couldn't finish it either. It was until last year that I got another 1.5 and was able to finish it. And, I had fun. The gummy ship did get tiresome after a short while and the beginning is really slow, somehow feel slower than KH2, even if the latter is actually longer. And funnily enough, I never enjoy Pooh world much, find it as annoying distraction. And you usually need to finish it for Ultima Weapon, so I always deal with it.
    The thing is, I think that is pretty normal for this franchise. Before starting every game, there is a certain... dread? with it. With some is the intro that feels like it is too long (KH1 and 2), others is the daunting task of, effectively, beating the game multiple times with not that different characters (KH BBS, 3D & COM) and all of them having cheese/nonsense dialogue that even with multiple playthroughs and lore dumb videos does not get any easier to take in. However, once each game starts going, when you get more and more abilities, when you get your extra movement skills and fight tougher bosses, it becomes incredibly hard to put down. God, I love this franchise.

    This was exactly what happened to me. Instead, I never knew anyone who played the game so I just showed it off to my friends and tried it. Did the thing where I played it on Proud and spent hours trying to not die but I got bored super fast and looked up how the combat works in this game. Discovered that you can cancel your spells by short hopping and extend your combos with short hopping as well. Overall I hated and loved this game for how special it was but when I played KH2 I felt like the game was even more special to me than skipping over it. KH2 is SUPPER good and you should definitly play it on Critical mode for the first time as well :D Don't be afraid to look up how the combat works in the games, these games came out in the PS2 era, you are supposed to look up help

    "And what come next" indeed. Chain of Memories(and its remake) are even _more_ rough gameplay-wise, but the story is a lot better, if still rather strange. It is also... _mostly_ skippable, but I'd recommend against it. And starting with KH2 the series really comes into its own. In KH2 the gameplay is something out of legend, the story becomes a lot more epic and digestible(especially if you played CoM), and the world design is a lot more straightforward.
    As a long-time fan, I have to say the story of the series _looks_ intimidating from an outside perspective, but if you just play the games it's all laid out in a pretty satisfying way.
    Except for DDD. Fuck that game.
