I think it's important to note that what Haruka did to Momoe was sexual assault and *that's* the reason sexual assault keeps coming up in her eggs. To expand on this, Haruka literally undressed in front of Momoe and placed her hand on her breast and said "touch me". That same phrase "touch me" comes up again from the people in her eggs, and it triggers a flashback.
I actually think that ai might be our token wlw, there are a lot of sapphic undertones in her relationship with koito and her relationship with neiru. I think that she probably has feelings for one or both of these girls but doesn't want to admit it.

Isn't Momoe's struggle that she is CIS gender but because she doesn't present herself in the traditionally feminine way no one accepts her as such though. I don't think Momoe is a trans character but that Kaoru's experience is the same but in the opposite way, that's why their kiss was the first one that was genuine since Momoe does accept Kaoru as a boy.
It is heavily implied that Momo is a trans girl, not only story-wise but with so many details throughout the series. If she was a cis girl, she wouldn't have any reason to introduce herself as a boy with the name 'Momotaro' to the Egg girls. As a trans girl though, she uses her dead name because she might be afraid of being judged and ridiculed for being trans. She's also constantly mistaken for a boy, which would be pretty unlikely if she just presented herself in a tomboyish manner. Also, it's a lot less likely for her to go through such extreme dysphoria if it was just about her getting mistaken for a boy if she was cis.

And if Momo is a trans girl she would probably have prominent throat knots unless she's on hormone blockers, and this was never presented or even hinted. Also the world setting is not like She-ra or Faking it that people treat LGBT way different from rl that being a trans should be and would be an issue in case of Kaoru, Momo being a trans girl should have been brought up more instead of left with simply hints(Also how Kauru is treated proves that Creators are able and willing to directly show Trans Characters instead of simply hinting ). Momo being a cis girl who has a masculine gender expression and is troubled for treated as a boy is in my opinion what requires less theory and has more proves in the show. Though I do think the subtext of Momo is about transgender issue, and the cis mistreated as the unwanted gender stuff is a euphemism for the creators are not willing to tab in a transgender lead(which I wouldn't blame them in any way since they do have good representation with Kaoru and this euphemism works. And that's already better than most trans representation we are getting in pop culture)

(To clarify, a big thing in Japan is to not stand out) It's somewhat upsetting that characters that have an androgynous look are immediately assumed by others to be trans or something of that liking, don't get me wrong, I support representation in media, but that goes for everyone. Those who look androgynous too. I've seen a lot of people actually upset because of others assuming she's trans, even trans people themselves. I think she's just a cisgender female who has an androgynous look, and because of said look is misgendered constantly- that's her struggle. And I think calling her trans or anything other than what she is defeats her character. I support the LGBTQ+ community, I'm gonna have to say, I think she's just a girl who gets misgendered.

I don't mean to offend anyone but I feel like Momoe is a girl (cis) who is often mistaken for a boy due to her androgynous appearance. I really liked how Kaoru was there and made her realise people struggled with a problem which was actually the opposite. Even when Momoe was confused in the start, she respected Kaoru and learned something new that day.

To be fair they are way ahead of the game. In japan homosexuality is seen more as a "oh that person likes that person" rather than "that guy likes that guy" not to say they don't get descriminated for it but it's more common and accepted. And Japan used to have stories/tales of a third gender in their folklore. There are actually a couple of other cultures who have normalized a third (if not more) genders. America will hopefully get there soon but try to remember. Japan has thousands of years of history, philosophy and development. America is like a stubborn newborn who throws tantrums. I think America will get there soon. At least I hope so. All we can do is let that hate and hurt end with us. Our generation.

There's certain experiences a lot of transfems can relate with, and Momoe's character depicts them VERY accurately. I don't know if I'm explaining well. What I want to say is that, to the people who get angry to Momo being trans girl, pls relax and let people enjoy things. Also, trans girls can also be masculine. I found in Momoe the representation that I searched during a lot of time.

Great show for the first 2/3 or 3/4 and then utterly falls apart in the last several episodes. Supposedly there were massive issues with budget, scheduling, and the show runners having never directed a show before. Still worth watching just prepare for the end to just go off the rails

some trans girls do dress tomboyishly too, though. I think a lot of trans girls probably relate to her feelings of wishing people would not judge by her appearance or clothing of choice and just respect her gender (especially with the stuff pointed out in the video). but, momoe could possibly still be written to be a cis girl who is insecure of her appearance, and the addition of a trans character in her episode might be to just discuss how they relate in their experiences. so I think both interpretations are ok.

I am glad to see anime get this stuff right and while i have not faced too much ridicule i know some have it really rough such as sexual harassment and such, personally i am pansexual but i have had my fair share of uncomfortable situations none the less. Thanks for making this video! Man I needed someone to talk about this amazing episode so badly. As a trans man it hit me super hard that, that happens to fellow transmen and the beautiful closure they both got.
I've noticed that its a debate whether she's a cis women, who's struggling with people mistaken her as a boy, or a trans women who is always getting seen as a boy and judged and has to deal with the feeling of being dysphoria. I think no matter how you see her character, she still brings light to a very serious topic about femininity, and masculinity. I see her as a trans women because I felt the show was hinting at that more but I understand why others see her as a cis women.
im nonbinary and watched this show with my girlfriend who is a transfem nonbinary person, when we first saw momoe we instantly loved her and this meant so much to us, we never thought we would see such good trans rep on anime and never even IMAGINED seeing some wholesome T4T representation, we had teared up a couple of times before, but we cried so much during this episode, this show is entirely amazing and means so much to us

As a transgender man ftm seeing representation means alot. No matter how big or small. I'm glad they did not deny Kaoru's identity as a boy . I'm glad they didn't deny Momo-chan's identity as a girl . Too many times in media I see characters be denied of their identity, not just in Anime & Manga, but even in games too unfortunately.
i think episode 10 is the best episode of the show (but seeing as how im a trans girl i may be biased) dont get me wrong, wep takes its concept and does amazing with it, but episode 10 just goes all the way. the best characterization, the best psychological horror, the best drama, maybe not the best fight but definitely one of the greatest, and what i think may be the absolute cutest moment in wep, and def the cutest moment ive seen in anime in a long time. absolutely wonderful. i love the funky little trans girl and trans boy. i hope one day they can be happy together.
It's so refreshing to see a cis person talk about this! I swear, everytime there's so much controversy over a clearly at the very least trans-coded character, especially when it's a positive depiction of transgender feelings, it feels so disheartening, but it's great to see people that understand it even if they're not trans themselves Personally, Wonder Egg was a messy show, it delivered some interesting things but as a trans person Momoe's arc definitely stood out the most. And Kaoru having such a good effect on her and their mutual validation even in such a horrible reality full of abuse and trauma was really heartwarming. It's definitely not the most perfect representation, especially with how the show was rushed, but definitely a needed and memorable one and it's great to see people talking about it positively

It was never mentioned momoe was trans, she's just a girl who has boyish style. that in itself creates the similarity between momoe and that trans boy. a boy who coventionally looks like a girl gets misgendered and a girl who conventionally looks like a boy gets misgendered by the society. shows how gender-identity is such a fragile idenitity to express in our society without getting invalidated.

I thought Momoe's problem was that she was a cis gender girl who was treated as a boy when that wasn't who she was... in my opinion that makes the dynamic between her and Kaoru so much more interesting because they've both been bullied by people who view them as the gender they are not but one is cis and one is trans, that shows more sides to what it means to have a gender.
I'm a trans person and i think Momoe is a good trans rep she's good. Butm i think Kaoru is horrible representation, to be honest im not a massive fan of the show but it is similar to alot of stereotypical trans story. first of is the stereotypical character design of him having an outfit that matches the trans flag colors. although trans people are commonly victims to sexual assault, as a trans person this is a something i commonly see in media about trans people. the sexulization and therefore the sexual assault of trans people can be seen represented in all media. It's sad to see that trans people and being trans is seen as something sexual by cis people (of course this isnt all cis people) and because of this alot of narratives about trans people revolve around sex, consensual or not. Personally i think the best trans representation ive seen is the manga series Wandering Son (although I haven't seen the anime so i can't comment on that). e dit: also if your trans and feel represented in kaoru or momoe this isnt like an attack on you and thats great that you can find a character that reflects you

ii dont know whether momoe is actually a trans girl or not, but seeing kaoru in the show is representation enough. especially because they show us the pains and traumas trans people have to go through, even just with the 'people don't call him a boy' stuff. i'm a trans girl and i love this representation.
Although everything indicates that she is a trans woman, it still confuses me the part where the mannequins say that only women are in that place and yet they place a trans man, so I assumed that they took into account only biological sex and not gender, but also place a trans woman? I’m pretty glad that Kaoru is a trans boy not only because of representation but because you don’t really see trans boys in anime as often in anime as trans girls (despite how rare it is). In Japan it’s already taboo for a man to be an mtf but more taboo to be a ftm… I would possibly argue that trans females have it a tiny bit better than trans males. I feel she might not be a trans female but it’s certainly possible. Cis women use “boku” even though it’s more of a masculine way of saying “I” or “me” as my cousin uses it because she’s a tomboy

I'm always mistaken by a girl bc of my voice and makes my really uncomfortable, even I have had man telling me that I most be really pretty irl and whenever I told them my real name they would call me fag or they would be really mean to me. This character is literally how I feel in my workplace and she somehow made me fell better about myself :')

I love the show and its characters, though I will have to disagree with you when it comes down to momoe. The show specifically stated only girls are able to enter the wonder egg "dream realm" she also states herself and it is proven she is a biological female. She dresses as a "boy" because people often portray her as one due to her "broad shoulders, Refined jaw and short hair" which as a female who has all, just because you have those features it does not make you any less feminine. I dress in my brother's clothing and often wear loose or "non-feminine" clothing simply because it is more comfortable. Dressing in "masculine" clothing doesn't automatically make you a male, she wants to be seen as a female whilst wearing what makes you comfortable. It's like a tom boy. However, Kaoru is confirmed to be trans, for she said she doesn't identify as a female and wants to be a guy. However, with Momoe, she is not trans she is a biological female who wants to be female. Her message as a character for I feel the show has many deeper meanings that relate to modern-day life is that people need to stop categorizing and smacking a gender onto materialistic items, like clothing and hair. I have struggled with self-esteem issues due to my broad shoulders or "masculine appearance" or having short hair and being grouped into the male category even though I am a biological female. I feel as i that is momoes character showing everyone that you don't have to wear pink to be a female. However, this is my opinion just as yours is and I will respect everyone's.

Isn't Momoe's struggle that she is CIS gender but because she doesn't present herself in the traditionally feminine way no one accepts her as such though. I don't think Momoe is a trans character but that Kaoru's experience is the same but in the opposite way, that's why their kiss was the first one that was genuine since Momoe does accept Kaoru as a boy.
It is heavily implied that Momo is a trans girl, not only story-wise but with so many details throughout the series. If she was a cis girl, she wouldn't have any reason to introduce herself as a boy with the name 'Momotaro' to the Egg girls. As a trans girl though, she uses her dead name because she might be afraid of being judged and ridiculed for being trans. She's also constantly mistaken for a boy, which would be pretty unlikely if she just presented herself in a tomboyish manner.
Also, it's a lot less likely for her to go through such extreme dysphoria if it was just about her getting mistaken for a boy if she was cis.

And if Momo is a trans girl she would probably have prominent throat knots unless she's on hormone blockers, and this was never presented or even hinted. Also the world setting is not like She-ra or Faking it that people treat LGBT way different from rl that being a trans should be and would be an issue in case of Kaoru, Momo being a trans girl should have been brought up more instead of left with simply hints(Also how Kauru is treated proves that Creators are able and willing to directly show Trans Characters instead of simply hinting ). Momo being a cis girl who has a masculine gender expression and is troubled for treated as a boy is in my opinion what requires less theory and has more proves in the show. Though I do think the subtext of Momo is about transgender issue, and the cis mistreated as the unwanted gender stuff is a euphemism for the creators are not willing to tab in a transgender lead(which I wouldn't blame them in any way since they do have good representation with Kaoru and this euphemism works. And that's already better than most trans representation we are getting in pop culture)

It's somewhat upsetting that characters that have an androgynous look are immediately assumed by others to be trans or something of that liking, don't get me wrong, I support representation in media, but that goes for everyone. Those who look androgynous too. I've seen a lot of people actually upset because of others assuming she's trans, even trans people themselves. I think she's just a cisgender female who has an androgynous look, and because of said look is misgendered constantly- that's her struggle. And I think calling her trans or anything other than what she is defeats her character.
I support the LGBTQ+ community, I'm gonna have to say, I think she's just a girl who gets misgendered.

I really liked how Kaoru was there and made her realise people struggled with a problem which was actually the opposite. Even when Momoe was confused in the start, she respected Kaoru and learned something new that day.

To be fair they are way ahead of the game. In japan homosexuality is seen more as a "oh that person likes that person" rather than "that guy likes that guy" not to say they don't get descriminated for it but it's more common and accepted. And Japan used to have stories/tales of a third gender in their folklore. There are actually a couple of other cultures who have normalized a third (if not more) genders. America will hopefully get there soon but try to remember. Japan has thousands of years of history, philosophy and development. America is like a stubborn newborn who throws tantrums. I think America will get there soon. At least I hope so. All we can do is let that hate and hurt end with us. Our generation.

Great show for the first 2/3 or 3/4 and then utterly falls apart in the last several episodes. Supposedly there were massive issues with budget, scheduling, and the show runners having never directed a show before. Still worth watching just prepare for the end to just go off the rails

some trans girls do dress tomboyishly too, though. I think a lot of trans girls probably relate to her feelings of wishing people would not judge by her appearance or clothing of choice and just respect her gender (especially with the stuff pointed out in the video). but, momoe could possibly still be written to be a cis girl who is insecure of her appearance, and the addition of a trans character in her episode might be to just discuss how they relate in their experiences. so I think both interpretations are ok.

Thanks for making this video! Man I needed someone to talk about this amazing episode so badly. As a trans man it hit me super hard that, that happens to fellow transmen and the beautiful closure they both got.
I've noticed that its a debate whether she's a cis women, who's struggling with people mistaken her as a boy, or a trans women who is always getting seen as a boy and judged and has to deal with the feeling of being dysphoria. I think no matter how you see her character, she still brings light to a very serious topic about femininity, and masculinity. I see her as a trans women because I felt the show was hinting at that more but I understand why others see her as a cis women.
im nonbinary and watched this show with my girlfriend who is a transfem nonbinary person, when we first saw momoe we instantly loved her and this meant so much to us, we never thought we would see such good trans rep on anime and never even IMAGINED seeing some wholesome T4T representation, we had teared up a couple of times before, but we cried so much during this episode, this show is entirely amazing and means so much to us

As a transgender man ftm seeing representation means alot. No matter how big or small. I'm glad they did not deny Kaoru's identity as a boy . I'm glad they didn't deny Momo-chan's identity as a girl . Too many times in media I see characters be denied of their identity, not just in Anime & Manga, but even in games too unfortunately.
i think episode 10 is the best episode of the show (but seeing as how im a trans girl i may be biased)
dont get me wrong, wep takes its concept and does amazing with it, but episode 10 just goes all the way. the best characterization, the best psychological horror, the best drama, maybe not the best fight but definitely one of the greatest, and what i think may be the absolute cutest moment in wep, and def the cutest moment ive seen in anime in a long time.

It's so refreshing to see a cis person talk about this! I swear, everytime there's so much controversy over a clearly at the very least trans-coded character, especially when it's a positive depiction of transgender feelings, it feels so disheartening, but it's great to see people that understand it even if they're not trans themselves
Personally, Wonder Egg was a messy show, it delivered some interesting things but as a trans person Momoe's arc definitely stood out the most. And Kaoru having such a good effect on her and their mutual validation even in such a horrible reality full of abuse and trauma was really heartwarming.
It's definitely not the most perfect representation, especially with how the show was rushed, but definitely a needed and memorable one and it's great to see people talking about it positively

Gosh I've been trying to decide if I wanted to see this show or not for a while, finding out there's actually trans characters in the show was like oh brb gotta go binge this right now immediately
I thought Momoe's problem was that she was a cis gender girl who was treated as a boy when that wasn't who she was... in my opinion that makes the dynamic between her and Kaoru so much more interesting because they've both been bullied by people who view them as the gender they are not but one is cis and one is trans, that shows more sides to what it means to have a gender.

I'm a trans person and i think Momoe is a good trans rep she's good. Butm i think Kaoru is horrible representation, to be honest im not a massive fan of the show but it is similar to alot of stereotypical trans story. first of is the stereotypical character design of him having an outfit that matches the trans flag colors. although trans people are commonly victims to sexual assault, as a trans person this is a something i commonly see in media about trans people. the sexulization and therefore the sexual assault of trans people can be seen represented in all media.
It's sad to see that trans people and being trans is seen as something sexual by cis people (of course this isnt all cis people) and because of this alot of narratives about trans people revolve around sex, consensual or not.
Personally i think the best trans representation ive seen is the manga series Wandering Son (although I haven't seen the anime so i can't comment on that).

I’m pretty glad that Kaoru is a trans boy not only because of representation but because you don’t really see trans boys in anime as often in anime as trans girls (despite how rare it is).
In Japan it’s already taboo for a man to be an mtf but more taboo to be a ftm… I would possibly argue that trans females have it a tiny bit better than trans males.
I feel she might not be a trans female but it’s certainly possible. Cis women use “boku” even though it’s more of a masculine way of saying “I” or “me” as my cousin uses it because she’s a tomboy
I'm not trans, I'm a bi sis boy, but I work at a call center. I'm always mistaken by a girl bc of my voice and makes my really uncomfortable, even I have had man telling me that I most be really pretty irl and whenever I told them my real name they would call me fag or they would be really mean to me. This character is literally how I feel in my workplace and she somehow made me fell better about myself :')

I love the show and its characters, though I will have to disagree with you when it comes down to momoe. The show specifically stated only girls are able to enter the wonder egg "dream realm" she also states herself and it is proven she is a biological female. She dresses as a "boy" because people often portray her as one due to her "broad shoulders, Refined jaw and short hair" which as a female who has all, just because you have those features it does not make you any less feminine. I dress in my brother's clothing and often wear loose or "non-feminine" clothing simply because it is more comfortable. Dressing in "masculine" clothing doesn't automatically make you a male, she wants to be seen as a female whilst wearing what makes you comfortable. It's like a tom boy. However, Kaoru is confirmed to be trans, for she said she doesn't identify as a female and wants to be a guy. However, with Momoe, she is not trans she is a biological female who wants to be female. Her message as a character for I feel the show has many deeper meanings that relate to modern-day life is that people need to stop categorizing and smacking a gender onto materialistic items, like clothing and hair. I have struggled with self-esteem issues due to my broad shoulders or "masculine appearance" or having short hair and being grouped into the male category even though I am a biological female. I feel as i that is momoes character showing everyone that you don't have to wear pink to be a female. However, this is my opinion just as yours is and I will respect everyone's.

The two puppet guys explain when ai asks if there are any guys in the dream realm that "this world is only for females who have lost someone close to suicide." I don't remember that scene, so unless you can give me an exact name for what the scene is then I'll have to ignore that. Even after all of that you cannot ignore how she's coded to be trans, she experiences all the things I experience as a trans girl, she has all the traits I have as a trans girl, you can't ignore this, and if you do then you should question why your strongly denying a characters trans coding and ask yourself the implications behind it. Anyways, I see her as trans girl, you can see her as a cis girl, but don't try to change how I view her, I get no representation in media, Momoe is on the few characters I can actually relate to.

I’m a boy. I’m a boy. Why can’t anyone see that though. I hate my looks. It hurts worse than anything to be called a girl. But it’s not like I can get rid of my mom. She knows. I told her.
