    Jeremy spoke in class today.
No one would listen to Jeremy though, so the gun spoke for him. As mentioned in another comment, "Try to erase THIS from the blackboard."
It has been 30 years since this was written (man I feel old) yet sadly it is still very relevant today.

The song is about Jeremy Delle who shot himself in front of his class in January 1991. That's all that's factual in the song. Eddie didn't know if Jeremy was bullied or disregarded by his parents. Eddie read the story about the suicide and was inspired to write the song and bullying was an issue then too. It's kind of sad that not much has changed in 30 years.
A little trivia - the young actor portraying Jeremy passed away in 2016 in a drowning accident at 36.

Such an emotional song and video. I remember when it played on the radio and I had no idea at the time what it was about.
I think the symbolism at the end is like you said, white shirts represent purity, but now they are stained by blood, forever altering them. And also the reaction poses are a symbol of eyes being opened to the part the played in his life to lead him to this moment. So sad.

The Bellamy salute was used in the USA during the pledge of allegiance. When it was adopted in Germany during WWII, it was banned in America, and replaced with the hand over the heart.

So yes..this depicts a true story of a kid named Jeremy that committed suicide in front of his class in HS in the early 90’s.

The song is about Jeremy Delle Who shot himself in front of his classmates at Texas' Richardson High School in 1991. He apparently left a note with a friend, but the contents have never been released. Pearl Jam was trying to use this as a way to bring awareness to teen suicide. They tried to reconstruct the circumstances around the event, but family and friends of Jeremy Delle say that the portrait is inaccurate at best. Without the note, and maybe even with it, we'll never really know what led him to do this.

This song is about a boy who kills himself at school to get revenge on the students who tormented him. It is based on the true story of Jeremy Wade Delle, a 15-year-old sophomore who killed himself in front of his English class at Richardson High School in Richardson, Texas, on January 8, 1991.

MTV demanded a censored version. But if you didn't know the story behind the video, it ended up giving more of a school shooter impression than of Jeremy commiting suicide (or it could be ambiguous). They showed Jeremy picking up the gun, removed most of the part where he put the barrel in his mouth and kept the end scene with the kids in class being bloody.

This song is a fabrication of Eddie Vedder's thoughts around a REAL LIFE EVENT. Let us please not forget this is about a 13 year old kid, Jeremy Wade Dell who KILLEED HIMSELF in front of his entire classroom. I love this song, it is fantastic, but please, do not forget the real life people who suffer still today. Those that knew and loved him, and those that only know this reductive song about his life. I know that Pearl Jam knows that this song is not enough, but we carry on regardless.....
