    France's Yannick Agnel wins the gold medal in the men's 200m freestyle swimming event in the aquatics centre at the london 2012 Olympics (30 July).
    Korea's Park Taehwan won silver in the event with China's Sun Yang winning bronze.
    Swimming has featured on the programme of all editions of the Games since 1896. The very first Olympic events were freestyle (crawl) or breaststroke. Backstroke was added in 1904.
    In the 1940s, breaststrokers discovered that they could go faster by bringing both arms forward over their heads. This practice was immediately forbidden in breaststroke, but gave birth to butterfly, whose first official appearance was at the 1956 Games in Melbourne. This style is now one of the four strokes used in competition.
    Women's swimming became Olympic in 1912 at the Stockholm Games. Since then, it has been part of every edition of the Games. The men's and women's programmes are almost identical, as they contain the same number of events, with only one difference: the freestyle distance is 800 metres for women and 1,500 metres for men.

    The Arena X- Glide tech suit he wore in 2009 increased his buoyancy due to it made of 100% polyurethane. Beidermann was a pretty big and bulky guy when he set that record. The transition from the body suits to jammers hurt big guys like him because now he has to work harder to keep that weight afloat, where the bodysuit+weight combo used to make people like him incredible. Bob Bowman said it himself though. it took Phelps 5-6 years to drop 4 seconds in the 200. Biedermann did it in 11 months.

    Yes Phelps' Beijing time was quicker.... because he wore a Speedo LZR. Not as fast as Biedermann's suit (Rome), but still quicker than those worn by the London field. Worth roughly a second over a textile, so without it the time would've been around what he did to win 07 Worlds (1.43.86). Good for silver here, but (probably) not enough to beat Agnel.

    • @theterminator308
      @theterminator308 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      phelps had been at his peak in 2007 not 2008 before supersuits was applied...I think that he would never get under 1.44 again without LZR suits. It is proven that phelps swam 1.44.79 in textile (off his PB by 0.93) in shanghai 2011 or 1.44.05 as anchor leg in london 2012.

    • @thebossness1440
      @thebossness1440 5 ปีที่แล้ว +39

      @@jasonbui6429 The issue isn't so much "Full body Suits", as those had been in use since the 1980's and really added a fairly marginal advantage to the swimmer; for example Ian Thorpe won multiple gold medals in the early 2000s wearing a full body suit, and no-one typically questions those victories.
      HOWEVER, critically in around 2008, companies began producing full body suits and "legskin" (look like tight leggings, phelps wore'em a-lot) suits that were made of 50% POLYURETHANE, a compound that essentially floated on top water, leaving less water resistance for a swimmer to deal with. At the 2008 olympics, these suits were as previously mentioned, 50% polyurethane; which while adding a 1-1.25% decrease in time, wasn't that much faster than non-polyurethane suits (Also why phelps's many world record setting performances in 2008 are still held as the fastest in the world.)
      Yet, in 2009 a suit that was 100% polyurethane was introduced, and this SHATTERED virtually every existing world record in Competitive swimming by a 2-5% decrease in times (WHICH is A TON in swimming at this level.) These 2009 suits, and sometimes the 2008 suits, which added less, but still a fairly substantial increase in speed are known as "Super Suits."
      In 2010, any polyurethane at all in suits was banned, and perhaps because full body suits got so associated with the now illegal compound; they were banned aswell. Now swim wear known as "Textile Suits" are no longer permitted to be made with polyurethane, are not more buoyant than water, and are shorter than at the knee. People tend to consider the fastest times before the Supersuit era and after it (both in textile suits) as the actual world records; in some cases of exceptional swims, they are the world record.
      TLDR: They banned full body suits cuz they usually had POLYURETHANE in them, a material that made swimmers go much faster than with something that mimicks human skin. People essentially saw the suits as not really swimming; or rather swimming in a way that was not "natural" or "real" (There are many other reasons aswell however.) The issue wasn't really that they "covered the entire body" however, that has a marginal effect on times; its rather the material that suits from 2008-2009 used known as Polyurethane that made them so much faster than the suits used before and after.

      Ian was in his own league as well, he would have been faster.
      But this Angel form was nearly unexpected.
      Noone has predicted a swim and dominance like this.

    When did Yannick swim 3:43? If he did, he should have swum 400m freestyle at London Olympic because he would be more competitive in 400m than 100m. They are both great swimmers. Hope they will have more competitions at more events together in the next few years.
