Sun Yang was only coached by that Australian coach for several months and he spent most of his time with his Chinese coaching staffs. These commentators kept mentioning the name of that Australian coach but ignored the Chinese coaches who are the real heroes behind Sun's success.
+ISoLAteD w the bulk of the things he learned were from the Australian coaches. The two major swimming powers in the world are Australia and the United States, and Russia is coming up. All other nations send their major swimmers to train in one of those major states.

True, the grandfather of my mother's colleague was his swimming coach. Anyway, I think we should not tell the win and lose by earning a medal. I always respect every athlete in competition cuz the effort they put behind the games. Coaches do help, but still, earning a medal or not highly depends on how much effort the athletes put in training.

I'm 67 and Sun Yang is a real inspiration to me. I went 4:16 for 400 in 1968....the world record then was 4:06.2. I wish I knew back then what I know now! I watch this video and the 1500 video once a week and keep it in mind when I swim. Swimming is a great sport!

i like how all swimmers always have headphones when arriving. not seeing too many other sports' athletes do that.

+Not Legato it's usually because when it s not the finals and it's a normal competition, you have to wait in front of your line while other 8 people swim before you. if it's a 1500M, you have to wait a long long time..

its to calm the nerves. I can't tell you how many times ive seen people have mental breakdowns in competitive sectional meets cuz of nervousness.
Sun yang has an amazing stroke. He takes less strokes per 50 than any other swimmer I've seen. His dps makes him a boss in events like this one.

Ian Thorpe's 3min 40.08 in 2001 is still the best 400m performance of all time (and he slided at the last part too). Fastest textile suit timing and that timing would still have won all the Olympic 400m events including 2021 Tokyo.
his suit was textile, but it's still a faster suit than the jammers they use now - I don't think prime Thorpe would be able to swim 3:40 low in the jammer

He swam a 3:41.8 when he was 16 well before prime! He could've gone 3:40. low in my opinion

Final touch was perfect, close but not enough. Gliding, given his last Stroke distance from the wall, was correct.
Sun Yang could have easily broken the world record - sloppiest last 5 yards in a big meet (arguably the biggest) I've ever seen.

There’s 0 evident of him cheating, his results were all official and excuses were to be made on each of the two test failures. People are saying that he is a cheater with no evidence, just to save face and find reasons for their own athlete’s’ bad performance. Sun was one of the most tested athletes and it’s clear that its impossible to cheat on any world level competition. Sun Yang is the second most decorated swimmer of all time according to individual world titles, and he is the best freestyler in history. Maybe his personal behavior is not the greatest, but everyone should definitely be looking up to his swimming skills.
There is a mountain of evidence, lol. Even with the drugs he's not the best freestyler

Sun Yang's 3:40.17 is the fastest record of swimming wearing no full body cover suit. Ian Thorpe wore a full body cover swimming suit when he swam at 3:40.08.

I really don't think Park Taehwan gave up. What he achieved in London 2012 was not bad at all. Silver medal with 3:42.06. No matter how good an athlete is, his peak time will be over.

The redistributed medals should be Gold Vanderkaay, Silver Hao, Bronze Kis. In retrospect, the guys in 9th, 10th, 11th, and 13th in the prelims (Cochrane, Joensen, Renwick, Biedermann) were denied a chance to take part in this final due to the anti-doping violations of Sun, Park, Dwyer, Napoleon before and after this race took place. Glaesner, who finished 12th in the prelims, has anti-doping violations as well.

Hmkls Did not know it was a "seal" suit. I read there were studies which showed that swimmers would go faster without the Thrope suit than with it.
Walkis Pacheco The suit was SPECIFICALLY made for Thorpe by Adidas. It fitted his body perfectly, but would sit all sorts of wrong on others. So of course another swimmer won't benefit from it. The suit was water repellent, and therefore a lot faster. At least a couple of seconds in a 400m race, maybe even more..

That's true, lezaks relay leg is pretty unmatchable and he never duplicated it. It says Sun is capable of it though We'll see in time.

Probably means less-televised events (in terms of the US's broadcasting). Things like weightlifting, judo, air shooting (which I seriously don't get but okay) and other "minor" events that just aren't as highly known or popularized.
If Park didn't get into trouble during the 400m heats, he might have got a better consequences.

I really hope he (or someone else) break's Biedermann's record. As far as I'm concerned, Biedermann breaking Thorpe's long-standing WR in this event was proof that the supersuits were far too much of a nuisance for the sport. I don't think Biedermann's come anywhere close to 3:40 since, he didn't even make this final.
