The suit actually slowed him though a nett wieght gain and restrictive in movement, every stroke against the fabric took a little more effort and also shortened his stroke,, not to mention trapped body heat,,,,, he should of shaved down and won by more , but sadly it was vanity that was the factor at play here! " If & But"..!!
Is Jordan and Lebron really a 50/50 debate though?
@@VF5It's the only event that matters... haha
My Friend Ian Thorpe he used to train at my local pool he always had time in between big events for me this is one his greatest swims
He's a really nice guy miss him much
Yeah I wish he'd stayed on. He could have won the 400 meters 3 times in a row, and another shout at the 200.
What an incredible field.
Phelps should thank Thorpe for retiring early due to personal issues.
Phelps would have beaten him regardless. He is the Usain Bolt of Swimming in his own class.
@@fender1000100 usain never lost
@@thedankfish6748 Except he did. In his first Olympics, in 2004. Perfection is an absurd measure for comparison, anyway. Nobody has ever been perfect. No one.
@@fender1000100 not according to this race he wasnt
@@kristianaaberg7882 He didn't quite have the stamina here. His first 100 was incredible but he tired.
I have a picture of him winning and throwing his arm up . A one off. Given to me for my 50 th bday. (Signed).🥇
Great sportsmanship from Pieter VDH
watched it when i was kid, not realizing I was watching the greatest swimming match of all time.
Great to see the three legends race against each other, Popov is the only swimmer that could stand next to these three. Definitely the race of the century, it's so rare to get three all time greatest athletes actually race against each other. Can't think of another time that has happened in sport.
Pity Thorpe retired at such a young age (we all know why), it would have been amazing to see the rivalry go on for another couple of Olympic games, especially against Phelps. Would Phelps have finally got one back on Thorpe in a freestyle race? That's the unknown question.
four all time greats. Grant Hackett was in the race too
I remember this one..a great race with three great swimmers
El mejor nadador indudablemente!!! Ian!!
Gracias y saludos cordiales desde Mallorca para vosotros olimpic
This race definitely lived up to the hype of Race of the Century. Not only the medalists, could have gone any way. Plus the other swimmers. A quality field.
Phelps chin and jaw just kept getting bigger. Interesting.
Roids..
Human Growth hormone ??
All the legend in one race...awesome👍
Love this sport
Thorpe, VdH and Phelps... three legends!!!!
If Thorpe had the technology suits of 2009 the 400m freestyle would never be broken again. I’m sure he would have gone to an alien territory
As for me this race was the best Moment in Olympic for all the Time
Perfect swim stroke! Not so fast pulling but the pacing was so smoooth and made it qiuck!
I miss u Ian Thrope~!!
Me too he was good friend of mine
@@joshrees1985 OMG!! I envy you Josh!! I wish I could meet him in person and swim together. Lol;)) Most of the time I've watched Ian's freestyle video a lot while I was begining to learn made me huge difference at the same lavel of people there at that time. Yay~!! Throwback Friday funday~;))
It was the most exciting time of my life believe me to swim a couple of metres away from and talk to him almost every week
@@joshrees1985 no way~! How lucky you are~~!! You must be excited for sure!! It's too good to be true though. I miss swimming this Summer in the middle of pandemic. I should have swam in my dream, ;((
Yeah he even swam in my lane once he was so fast he did it in a second blink and you’d miss it
This time would have won the Paris Olympics 2 free. Wild
Ian Thorpe is the GOAT
I don’t know.
Thorpe was definitely an amazing swimmer and he had the best nickname- by far.
But 23 gold medals speaks for itself.
Still the best race ever!
By far my fave swimming race of all time!
Ian Thorpe beat Phelps almost one body length at this race (Athen 2004), what a legend Aussie swimmer.
Show us the chest Thorpe!! A race without the magic swimming suite
@@jimmy-vy8hy yeah weren't they banned after these games?
if more further Phelps beat those two...
@@RatelHBadger and @jimmy-vy8hy This one wasn't buoyant - it wasn't until 2008 that nett-buoyancy was allowed and that was what made the massive differences. They only lasted until after the world championships of 2009 - so only really one year of "cheat" suits and certainly not here.
In reality, Thorpe's suit was no more beneficial than the long-legged versions of everyone else, but it's a shame really, because without understanding this nuance (buoyant vs non-buoyant) the focus is on the wrong thing (the suit, not the amazing swimming) and unfairly detracts from the perception of the performance
The suit actually slowed him though a nett wieght gain and restrictive in movement, every stroke against the fabric took a little more effort and also shortened his stroke,, not to mention trapped body heat,,,,, he should of shaved down and won by more , but sadly it was vanity that was the factor at play here! Imagine how fast he could have gone had he not retired before his peak.
Increible Thorpe y Van
thorpedo. how world class he was.
The great thorpe with all grace in swimming
Ian Thorpe's swimming is just like a professional fish's swimming
La mejor competencia de nado de la historia, el mejor de los tiempos el torpedo Ian, segundo Pieter y aprendiendo de los grandes Michael, bien👍
