+Karlie White still. You dont talk about the bad things , like if i was him and were to see what I did , i would love to hear good things about it . Not about the one who was "Supposed" to win
no because le clos just managed to beat the greatest of all time who had only lost just 2 times before or do you rather want to hear about the losers who won previously?
As a South African, born and raised in Durban (just like Chad), this is probably my fave Olympic moment next to Penny Heyns in 96, and Wayde Van Niekerk in Rio 2016. Chad beating the greatest ever was such an underrated achievement. The commentators sounded disappointed
definitely, but at the end phelps is on a bad stoke timing to touch the wall which is a mistake, and cause him to lose. also he lost time on the third turn for the same reason. Chad did everything to win, the time is incredible, he totally merits the win, but phelps did a mistake.
5:42 Look at these 3 strokes from Le Clos. Unbelievable power. This is what gave him the final edge over Michael. To think he did that in the final leg of the 200 is amazing. Well done Le Clos.
I don't know what you're seeing, but Phelps was ahead until the end. Every swimmer know the problem of butterfly: In butterfly swimming, even though a competitor is ahead by a head length, the lead is changed all the time with the tips of the hands, depending on who has just swung his arms forward. And Phelps had the problem that in his rhythm he had his arms in front of the wall too early, but he had no more space for an additional arm swing. He had to slide out towards the wall which slowed him down massively, while le Clos was able to fly perfectly to the wall with his last arm swing. Congratulations to LE clos, but it's not like you say that he would have passed him during the last 3 arm pulls. From the body Phelps was ahead until the end
No matter what, Le Clos didn't give up. That's the spirit! He knew he was racing with the best in the world, but if he hadn't done the last strokes as fast as he did, he would be the 2nd. Well done!
+woundedryhmes exactly Phelps was gliding in just like what happened with Cavic. Cavic glided in and Phelps came in hard and won. Le Clos did the same thing he was hungrier.
As an American, it gave me such chills to see Le Clos completely lay everything out on the line in that last 25 and come up with the win! He totally deserved this with Phelps giving him all his motivation over the past however many years... great job Le Clos.
when they show the underwater cam you can see le clos looking at phelps and matsuda to see what he has to bring for the last 25. Then he just put down his head and went. Absolutely stunning swim
A 20 year old from Durban, South Africa beat the best Olympian of all time - super proud!!! Biased commentary though and not giving credit where it is due!
"Phelps made a mistake" Ohh shut up! We can also say that Cavic made a mistake in the 100m Butterfly at the 2008 Beijing when Phelps won by 0.01 seconds. Give credit where it's due - Le Clos had a great performance. Stop focusing on the fact that Phelps got beaten, what's more important is that Le Clos, period!
+Jerry Oviedo first of all dumbass is what you are Le close has won I'm not saying not but compare to michael he has won nothing. Oh and by the way he didnt get any medal in the 200 just in case you didnt see the finals yesterday. stfu MP is the best swimmer ever.
Well im not a swimmer but even i can tell that phelps made a mistake at the finishing line. He was leading even at like the last 10m and he shouldve won. Also of course its more significant that the greatest swimmer of all time made a silly mistake and lost gold medal
Almost brings tears to my eyes. The passion of Le Clos. What a career he has had. Powers waning now especially in the face of Milak, but undoubtedly a great of the sport
what are you saying, if they were watching this video after and started commentating it would be easier. But when they were commentating they were in a stand at the top of the stadium.. and they were commentating while the was HAPPENING..
Giving everything you have to win a race is not enough, sometimes like this one, the mistakes of others give the victory to you. Chad swam with everything he had, but if Phelps would done the same thing that he did to Cavic in Beijing, Le Clos wouldnt have a gold medal. Like the commentators said, it was timming thing. +mozart mario I agree. Phelps is probably just as or even more dangerous than he ever has been. He's working with the same intensity and determination as he did leading up to Beijing, but he's also in a much better place than he has ever been. Last night during the trials he said that he is the happiest he has ever been in life right now and that right there alone is huge. +seb seb why can't you let chad have a little spotlight? Everyone already knows who phelps is but god forbid someone else get a little bit of attention.
Probably the race that gave Phelps the motivation to come back from retirement and go to Rio. This in turn allowed him to have such a tally of gold and Olympic medals, that I doubt I will see anyone come close to it in my lifetime. Thanks to LeClos! Talk about making lemonade out of lemons!
Phelps did make a mistake though. But that's how the competition is. In gymnastics, one mistake can cost you a medal period. No difference here. Le Clos didn't make a mistake and he won. He won fair and square.

hate to break it to you but the vast majority of people who watch swimming love michael phelps (me included). The commentators would be upsetting the majority if they did not talk about phelps.
Amazing. LeClos won the same way Phelps did in 2008 in the 100m butterfly. In this race, Phelps took a long cruise into the wall while LeClos took a half stroke, winning him the race.
the commentators are purely annoying. It's true that Michael Phelps has been the greatest swimmer and should've won this fly race, but what about the 2008 butterfly Michael won the gold by 0.01 second? Could the commentator talk a bit how that silver medalist lost by "making a mistake"? Stop talking about how Michael lost the gold medal. Le Clos is a great swimmer who absolutely deserved the gold medal in this race.
if you go watch the video of that race you will see that they do say it. They are obviously not going to go into much detail in this video about a race that happened 4 years ago
To all the haters of Chad Le Clos. He beat Michael. So??? That's the beauty of it. Its so boring to see a man wins all the time. Chad Le Clos I LOVE YOU!!!!!
You’re a hater of Michael. Michael did make a mistake at the third turn, he said it in a interview, so considering that Michael is a big deal, and considering that it was chad le clos first Olympics, Michael should kind of get more attention, but I respect chad le clos as well
@@billyhuh6229 why is he a hater? Yes, Phelps made a mistake, but Chad knew how to use it. He didn't breath in the last 2 strokes, wich is insanely hard after a 200 fly, but it made him go a little faster. Hadn't he gave that last bit of himself and he would have lost the race, even with Michael's mistake. Plus, it being his first olympics makes it even more impressive and he should get more attention for beating the greatest of all time in one of his best events.
I hate reading some of these comments because they are NON-SWIMMERS who don't know anything about swimming trying to say if he didn't something else he would of won...but in reality he did what he was supposed to...if he did what they said he would of lost even worse or have been disqualified
I hate reading those kind of comments too Lauren, but I also hate reading comments like yours - uneducated people - who can't understand that the phrase "would of" does not exist in English language and it's actually "would have". Not "would of".
+Sota Sato My exact thoughts. "Would of" is one of the most ridiculous solecism I've ever seen. It's up there with the infamous "Your welcome" (instead of You're welcome), then/than & its/it's errors.
Chad has some serious things happening in his life also so I'm sure his focus isn't 100% but good for phelps getting the job done. Not really sure why he came back though
I am a competitive swimmer, and something that is truly interesting is that, every single one of those men, from lane 1 and lane 8, are truly wonderful. Rather than freaking out about the two literally most noticeable swimmers in the 200m event, I think those who swim can agree on this the split times in the long course pool are freaking insane. So don't talk about 1 or 2 people getting all the credit, because every singly one of those gents out there spends hours every day.
The bais most people have is disgusting. There is no such a thing as a mistake in this case Phelps was well and truly beaten tactically and in every conceivable way he expelled too much energy in the first 150m while Chad conserved which allowed him to land the killer in the last 10m, its nauseating hearing the commentors starting a dodgy Phelps fan club instead of giving credit where it's due. Olympics must bring objective commentators
Pfft sorry to disappoint you commentators! Would you mind actually mentioning the awesome winner and quit reiterating over and over that the untouchable US has lost?
lol they keep talking about how phelps made a mistake and they're keeping the camera on him when le clos won...? somebody give my boy some credit he did so good

this is so amazing, if you said nobody can beat phelps, now please look at this video!
Amazing. LeClos won the same way Phelps did in 2008 in the 100m butterfly. In this race, Phelps took a long cruise into the wall while LeClos took a half stroke, winning him the race.
There is leaps and bounds difference between this race and the 2008 Beijing race between Phelps and Cavic!
Well despite the hate, he made his country proud so🇿🇦
The commentators stole this special moment for Chad
the commentators are purely annoying.
We can all say that Chad really is a Chad.
Le Clos!!! nothing better than seeing an underdog beat the best! nothing bettert than seeing the US lose to a small country
Joey Jojo winning against a guy (worlds greatest swimmer) that made a "mistake", kind've makes it an hollow one.
Joey Jojo hahaha chad le clos is anything but an underdog
Allen Kemmett what was his mistake? i didn't see any.
Allen Kemmett you mean that last stroke that he stretches his arms way too early?
Americans be like, "No, he made a mistake." No dudes, he just got beaten by a better swimmer.
Well done Chad! Making South Africa proud!!
Met Chad when I worked in Durban,South Africa few years back ...what a lovely, down to earth dude .
I come here 9 years later just after Le clos came 5th in a 200m olympic final, I'm here to feel better & remember how great he is
To all the haters of Chad Le Clos. He beat Michael. So??? That's the beauty of it. Its so boring to see a man wins all the time. Chad Le Clos I LOVE YOU!!!!!
You’re a hater of Michael. Michael did make a mistake at the third turn, he said it in a interview, so considering that Michael is a big deal, and considering that it was chad le clos first Olympics, Michael should kind of get
more attention, but I respect chad le clos as well
@@billyhuh6229 why is he a hater? Yes, Phelps made a mistake, but Chad knew how to use it. He didn't breath in the last 2 strokes, wich is insanely hard after a 200 fly, but it made him go a little faster. Hadn't he gave that last bit of himself and he would have lost the race, even with Michael's mistake. Plus, it being his first olympics makes it even more impressive and he should get more attention for beating the greatest of all time in one of his best events.
This race was awesome no doubt ... so proud of le clos. But after this race he had a bad attitude towards Phelps, not cool.
This narration is the best way to minimise the success of someone else.
I love the voice of the speaker of the swimming Arena!
Just perfect for announcing the swimmers
What a humble boy Chad has remained. Love him
why is nobody talking about how its like 5 seconds delayed
That late surge by Clos was just insane! Look at 5:42 for instance...
Phelps just got his revenge a couple hours ago
Such a legend!!!! I was screaming when he crossed that line. A real SA hero.
Last 50 was awesome from le clos . Increased his stroke rate effectively to finish. Technique was great
I hate reading some of these comments because they are NON-SWIMMERS who don't know anything about swimming trying to say if he didn't something else he would of won...but in reality he did what he was supposed to...if he did what they said he would of lost even worse or have been disqualified
Well said
I think Seto Daiya will win.
would HAVE, please, basic grammar!!!
Le Clos underated af and not taking any credit
4 years later Phelps is back on top with Gold and Chad Le Clos doesn't even medal. Phelps cant be human. Damn dolphin or something 🏊🏼🐬🐬
Chad has some serious things happening in his life also so I'm sure his focus isn't 100% but good for phelps getting the job done. Not really sure why he came back though
+Ashley Andrade lol stop man excuses
Le Clos went to my high school, his brother Jordan was in my grade. I remember watching this race with my family and we went crazy when he won.
Any coach would be proud of that head being down in the last 5m of a 200 fly
At least Phelps got his sweet revenge this year
YEA
Phelps got beaten by a 19 year old
+Christopher Kode he goes to USC he has top coaching
+Christopher Kode you do realise a swimmers prime and peak is when they are 24. Phelps is 31. Educate yourself child
+J - I thought it was 36?
He can’t believe it haha! So happy he won that!
Chad looked chilled:)
Commentators need to stop being one sided ad and Le Clos the credit he deserves
The bais most people have is disgusting. There is no such a thing as a mistake in this case Phelps was well and truly beaten tactically and in every conceivable way he expelled too much energy in the first 150m while Chad conserved which allowed him to land the killer in the last 10m, its nauseating hearing the commentors starting a dodgy Phelps fan club instead of giving credit where it's due. Olympics must bring objective commentators
Pfft sorry to disappoint you commentators! Would you mind actually mentioning the awesome winner and quit reiterating over and over that the untouchable US has lost?
Thomas Prinsloo Typical Anglo-Saxons. That's how they behave.
So true...
Lightning doesn't strike twice. Phelps reclaimed the 200m butterfly crown
Shut up
It’s 2021 and Le Clos did not even place in the 200 m fly. That win was just at fluke.
The determination of Le Clos👏👏👏 Our best.
I feel very proud to be a South African and have Chad presenting us
lol they keep talking about how phelps made a mistake and they're keeping the camera on him when le clos won...? somebody give my boy some credit he did so good
