Instead of putting sea salt on to offset the sweetness, I would add salted cashews. If u like cashews, u will love this!! Also, I put in butterscotch chips, instead of peanutbutter chips. 30 yrs. ago that is what was on the recipe wrapper, that wrapped around the sweetened condensed milk can. (Magic Cookie Bar recipe made with choc. chips and butterscotch chips) On that can is where I first heard of MAGIC COOKIE BARS!! They are SO good!!
Magic Cookie bars has been a Christmas tradition since I was just a little kid. I'm 67 now and still make a huge batch every year. I cannot imagine Christmas without my magic cookie bars. It's such a versatile recipe you can change it so much it's amazing
You seem like such a loving husband and a doting dad...and you’re just about cuter than a speckled pup! I couldn’t enjoy watching and listening to you any more than I do! Thanks for the best videos.
Thanks for sharing. My Mom passed away last December and she would make these for the holidays. She called them "Hello Dollys". This was sweet to see during Mother's Day weekend. 💓
My family has been doing these for years. We call them 7 layer bars. Same recipe however we’ve always used butterscotch chips not peanut butter. Yummy!
When I was a kid (a VERY long time ago) we watched the Mike Douglas Show. One week he had Carol Channing on as a co-host and she made these bars. At that time they were called "Hello Dolly Bars" because she was on Broadway doing "Hello Dolly" and apparently made them for the cast. These were always a special treat for us and my favorite pieces were the corners because they were crunchier! We had no peanut butter chips back then, so we only used the semi-sweet chocolate chips. Later on, they were simply called Magic Cookie Bars......... I still have my late mother's recipe card that says "Hello Dolly Bars".
My mother made them a lot years and years ago. I never knew why they were called Hello Dolly Bars. Thank you for the insight. I copied my mothers recipe some time ago .....even to the point of writing "1" after "Servings".Now if I could just get the memory of Carol Channing's singing out of my head.
I was bad at baking and when I discovered your channel, I instantly became better!! Your recipes are amazing and easy!! I will try this today!! It’s my moms birthday:)
Love these! Instead of using graham crackers, I substitute a sleeve of saltines...gives you that light, crispy base, and the saltiness of the crackers balances all the sweetness! ♡
I really enyoy with your fresh way of cooking. Amazing recipes and funny guy. You make easer our confinement. A hug from Spain. Europeans need people like you at this time. Thank you very much!
I just discovered these cookie bars. I have made them now in many different ways, with Chocolate & Mint chips; salted caramel chips; and with miniature dried marshmallows (the kind that come in hot cocoa packets) instead of coconut (some in my family can't have it) - they are all fabulous and it's fun to experiment. Our favorite by far has been the Chocolate Mint ones!
I made these again for my hubby and me, of course! Magic bars are his favorite! I made these and your peanut butter blossoms cookies today! Both so yummy 😋
These bars are my favorite cookie, I call them Hello Dollies though, there is 1 ingredient that differs between my bars and yours, instead of peanut butter chips, I use butter scotch chips and it’s is sooo good, but I’ll have to try the peanut butter chips the next time I make these. I love your recipes, I have made several of your recipes and they have all been a hit with me and my family, thank you.
Your videos have taught me many great recipes. You have the knowledge and can teach them well. Now grand kids are learning and these will part of classes. Thanks/ Mari Florida
So many ways to make these bars. It really is substituting what one’s preferences are. I actually began with butterscotch and hubby loves peanut butter. He loves all nuts but walnuts which is part of many recipes. Me? Pick and choose you never lose. Hugs 🥰
Awww!! I LOVE THESE!! My Granma Stone use to make these at Christmas time and bring these and Peanut butter and Chocolate Fudge too. She passed last summer. So it’s kinda bittersweet thinkin’ about it. 💜💜💜💜

Followed your recipe entirely (just used butterscotch instead of Peanut Butter), including toasting the Pecans. There's different methods for layering the ingredients but your is by far the best. Very good!!! Were a hit and the company christmas potluck!
I grew up with these, and still make them. We used to pour the SC milk over the base and then top with the chips, nuts and coconut. It would bubble up and glue everything together. If you want that Samoa flavor make the crumb base with Walkers Scottish Shortbread or Lorna Doone's instead of graham crackers. Love your videos!
There is a bogus recipe online that I follow using the coconut as the first layer. I knew it was screwed up when I took them out of oven. These look great! I'm going to try again.
I have made these several times. They are delicious. We usually fight for the edges because the extra crispy crunchy. I’ve seen this recipe where they pour the condensed milk in the middle of the recipe it does work best if it’s the last item you put on the top.
I have been making these bars for at least 30yrs. The recipe is on the Eagle Brand condensed milk can. I buy my crackers already crushed perfectly by McCormicks. They are perfection, not too sweet. Thanks for the parchment paper hint.
I only eat these once a year for Christmas & they are my favorite! I love magic bars they are a family Christmas time tradition 😍 we add white chocolate chips in ours as well☺️
never was a baker but I love to bake now because your amazing in all the little details which for me definitely helps thanks so much for the videos they are so helpful
That's insane, such an easy recipe but soooo yummy. I'm gonna make two batches one to share the other to snack every night because I love, love, love coconut. Thanks John, for sharing and caring.
I didn't think I could love this channel more then John goes and makes my favorite dessert of all time. I love magic cookie bars. I think the original recipe uses butterscotch chips instead of peanut butter chips.
I am a seasoned cook. I just want to say, I so appreciate your tips and clear instructions. How you have the recipe easily available. You are my go to source for great recipes! Thank you!
I have no interest in baking whatsoever but I enjoy eating baked goodies and your stuff always looks amazing. Been following your channel for about 2 years now just because I love your personality, you always make me laugh or smile! Whenever you post a new video I watch it either that day or the next as you are one of my favourites. Thank you so much for making such lovely entertaining videos!
I"ve been making these for years, but this was the first time I realized how much better things would turn out if I pressed the crumbs firmly onto the bottom, and also lining the pan. The name I always heard for these was 7 layer bars. Now, one of the things I like about them is that I have a granddaughter with a peanut allergy, so it's an easy cookie to make nut free without messing with the proportions.
This recipe is just awesome thanks for this amazing recipe 😊I skipped peanut butter chips and added biscoff spread with dark chocolate and white chocolate and the other items 👌🏻
Love your gorgeous bake and cookware! What is the brand of the copper pots you have hanging on the back wall? They are gorgeous! And I love the recipe, thanks for a good idea for a special treat after dinner!
You have helped me make so many amazing treats for my friends and family! I recently got into baking looking for something to do during quarantine, so thank you for keeping me entertained!
What a perfect recipe to share with us John, as we could all use a little magic in our lives right now! Sending a big virtual hug 🤗 your way from Las Vegas. Best wishes to you and your family ❤️❤️
Ooh! I haven’t made these since my nieces were youngins! I used to put the graham crackers in a bag and let them smash them up (before I then finished them into the fine crumb). Then they loved sprinkling on the layers! And same! You can’t have too much sweetened coconut!
when i lived in the dorms they always had these in the dining commons and they were so good. I didn't know what they were called and I always craved them. thanks for posting this!
John, these were a favorite growing up. You have such a fun channel! Really like your new kitchen. May I ask where you get your aprons? It's not a recipe request..sorry. Thanks, Paula
