I also felt like the constant meta dialouge of it being a requal, ways to survive, things you should and shouldn't do, needing to bring back the OG characters to not piss off the fans, etc., was overdone. It was basically every other line and overshadowed any actual plot and emotion. I know the old movies did it a bit but they also kept a really strong story and character development going. It was just way too much this time around.

Scream 4 had better writing in terms of original new characters and development that felt like they knew each-other and it balanced them well with the legacy characters while scream 2022 they were poorly written and didn’t have character behind most of the names at all just seemed like people to kill randomly and the legacy characters were so disconnected

Exactly what I feel. 20 minutes into Scream 4 and I already know and love the new cast. They blended so perfectly with the old ones I sometimes forgot they were not carried over from the previous films. Fast forward to Scream 2022 and in the beginning of the final act I'm still trying to remember who was who on Tara's group of friends.

@@MaryTheresa1986 Right? When Amber revealed herself as (one of) the killer(s) and shot Liv I thought: "Wow! So it was... who is this again?". Scream 4, you know all their names, people were freaking the fuck out with Kirby will she/won’t she live etc. I will never forget being in the theater and hearing a woman go,”that bitch has lost her mind” when Jill was going through the table. In 5, there were too many characters , not enough time to develop them, and I really do only remember Mandy. It’s way past the millennium, I need a goddamn motive. Can I just say I was very disappointed on how Stu’s character was looked over as “oh he was just Billy’s accomplice” nothing special, one of the girls was literally looking back and forward asking “Who’s Stu Macher??” That’s what made the first Scream iconic because it was TWO Ghostface killers and I truly loved Stu’s character because he’s too goofy to be the killer, but SURPRISE! Like Stu was much more than a weak accomplice, Stu never got caught or slipped up, Billy got caught with the phone and got arrested and I felt Stu had to hurry up and pick up and cover were Billy left to continue pulling it off. #RespectStuMacher

My favorite scene in the movie hands down. When they visited Dewey and he gave Sam and Richie the rules to being in a real Scream movie. Dewey questioned Richie immediately and also said it was one of Tara’s friends. He nailed it just like Randy did in the original. I loved Richie. Sam’s backstory reminded me a mix of Mamma Mia and Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker, plus a mix of fanfiction so I don’t think that’s original.
I can see how everyone is connected: Sam is Billy’s daughter obviously, Mindy and Chad are Randy’s niece and nephew, Wes is Judy Hick’s son, and Liv is the ex-girlfriend of Stu Macher’s nephew.
(I wonder if Sam and Tara’s father will be seen or mentioned in Scream 6 and if he’ll have any connection or relation to previous characters. Since Kirby is supposedly to return in the 6th one, Sam and Tara’s father could probably be somehow related to her? Maybe Mr. Carpenter and Kirby can be cousins? I don’t know…)

Watch it at least 3 times before you make your final decision. First time you watch it you're basically subliminally looking for flaws.
Second time you watch it you know who the killers are so you watch it knowing this and pay more attention to detail and realise the plot was actually really good.
3rd time you watch it you appreciate it more for what it was the meta, the gore, the performances, you pay attention to detail about every line.
And if you can watch it 3 times and appreciate that this is a requel. And the scene where mindy explains it is literal and meta.
It sets up and other 2 films at least. This movie had to happen exactly like this in order for the story to continue, which as fans, it's all we really want.

I mentioned this to you in Twitter already, but I’m honestly really grateful to see someone - you - openly criticizing the film, and despite the fact that I have a few more grievances, I completely agree with you. It was good, but it just didn’t feel like Scream and for me, the trio IS Scream so seeing them take a backseat felt so wrong. I didn’t feel any sort of connection to any of the new cast besides Sam and Tara, so having the trio used more as devices than the embodiment of the franchise really negated the impact of the story. Gale, Dewey, and Sid are and have always been my draw to the franchise, so sidelining “the heart” as Wes referred to them felt cheap and I genuinely feel like anything beyond this can’t be true to or honoring of the original films now that the trio is no more. A lot of people have compared the impact of [Death] to Randy’s, Tatum’s, Cotton’s, etc. but it’s just not the same because none of those characters are Scream in the way that these three are.
But anyway, back to my original point - thank you so much for being honest with your critique!

One thing that stuck out to me was how nonchalant Sidney was with the fact that her ex had an illegitimate daughter!! The ex that started all this nonsense...
And I agree whole heartedly that the core trio was not used enough at all. Honestly, Dewey should've done a headshot from the first bullet - his character knows a lot better than that. Seemed like a poor excuse to have a shocking death. And the constant "meta" movie talk and "who is it?" dialogue got a little tedious throughout the movie. The problem with the movie is that everything is said on the dialogue, there's no suspense or place to fill the void... For example Dewey and Gale talking about their relationship like... they haven't dealed with it before? It felt like it was just to serve the porpuse of informing the audiencie and not natural at all, or at the end when she says "I know what I will write about...a good sheriff that used to live in this Town" wtf kind of dialogue is that or Sam saying that monologue about been Billy's daughter like all is on the table, no sustance or ínterpretation.
Wes Craven deserved better, nothing can replace the way he executed the scene and suspense. This movie fails to understand that just because Sam says we are trap on a fan fiction movie it justifys its lazyness, lack of original ideas and poorly execution. Dewey deserved better than to be killed by Amber (???) what an awful character that wsd, even Emma Roberts got to show at the end of Scream 4 that she was tough to deal with killing people, amber got shot with the bulletproof vest and just carried on like nothing happened to her. Wes Craven once said "never insult the audience" this movie just did that.

But I thought Wes, her son, was going to get startled by a cop since Judy had called all available officers to her home. I assumed we were going to get a scene where cops come in and tell him to not go outside and he does and sees his mom. But we didn't get that..
So while he is getting everything ready for dinner, the music changes every time he opened a pantry door or the fridge and the whole time I'm thinking this sweet son who loves his Mom enough to carry around mace and tasers, is making up his mom's place setting and getting ice for her drink, reading that lemon square note and scoffing at how how funny his mom is. I just got the picture that they had a good relationship and he cares a lot about her. meanwhile she's been gutted on the porch, steps from the door. By that time I was like, shit a cops gonna come and he's gonna see her dead. SAD. But no, the scene kept going on with him just being a nice teen and helping his mom out for dinner and then he dies too! :( I was like shiiiiiit.

1- Sam’s acting was not it and i wish Tara was the main girl.
2- There was no character development, it felt really rushed.
3- I wish there was at least one chase scene. Killing scenes happened too fast.
4- Trailer showed too much. Vince, Chad, Amber’s burning (Sidney’s hair was also shown), Gale’s mourn (everyone knew that was about Dewey) and they showed too much about opening scene.
5- After Amber revealed herself, suddenly Mindy disappeared and came back at the end of the movie.
6- Chad and Tara literally stabbed to death so many times and survived somehow.
7- When Richie and Sam were fighting to death at the entrance, Gale and Sidney were literally in the kitchen. Amber was already burnt so did they just chit-chatted about weather or something?
The list goes on.. I still enjoyed the movie tho.

(If it’s true that they are leaving them behind, then we deserved it.) Im holding out hope that we might get it in the next one, but I’m afraid they are just going to completely abandon them now. And that’s such a disservice. So disappointed.
Why leave them out so much? If it was to give us time to fall in love with the new characters, then that failed. Because although I thought several of the new ones did a good job, I just don’t care about them. I have no interest in where their story goes from here. So extremely sad. I really hope this isn’t the end of the line for me, but it just feels like it is. 😞

This was my thoughts on Scream 2022 when I left the movie theather Thursday. The pros, mix and cons
    Positives:
    - It has its own identity (I was afraid it would turn out being too similar Scream 4, with this whole "woodsborow massacre" again) [EXCELENT]
    - Lots of Easter Eggs (classic old themes of the franchise, classic characters like Marta, Randy's cousin and maybe the mention to "Mark" Kincaid?, and so much more) [EXCELENT]
    - Bold (it killed Judy, Wes, Dewey), Tara survives [EXCELENT]
    - It made me care for the characters [EXCELENT]
    - Lots of gore (many stabs in "chilling" places like neck and mouth) [GOOD]
    - Interection between Sidney and Gale (I LOVED the scene where Gale recgonizes and feeling bad that her books may have created this whole massacres throught the entire franchise) [EXCELENT]
    - Sidney (and Gale kinda) are more pro-active and less passives like in Scream 4, they have a goal and they work on it [EXCELENT]
    - A the story overall is good [EXCELENT]
    - Ghostface is more active in the first half of this film than in any other movie before, with lots of kills and attempts of kill [EXCELENT]
    - The criticizism of toxic fandom was really nice to be play out here [GOOD]
    Mix:
    - It's not a Sidney Prescott's story (I would image this day would come on day: the day that franchise would pass the torch to a new group of protagonists. I understand the reason but I'm so fan of Sidney..)
    - Nice comment on how some people thinks modern horror movies feels more important and better due to their critiscism of social tackles than the classics "simplistic" older slashers movies (I'm not knowing how to explain my point in english) BUT this comentary only happens just once at the opening scene
    - The killers motifs (the last STAB movie being bad and outraged fans) were tackled too quick during the movie, what made it a little bit silly (intentionally or not, I didn't get it)
    - Billy's ghost. It was a little bit weird but I liked seeing Billy somehow again. I thought it was Melissa's character imagination, not Billy's ghost tho
    - The justification for the killing spree is good, the whole "requel" thing is a good comentary on (horror) movies trend that's going on but I was brought up by Mindy out of nowhere at the beggining of the movie and never brought up again during the rest of the movie until the Ritchie and Amber speech as they explain their motives. And weird how Mindy came at that conclusion too fast, too precisely and end it up being 100% right. If she was the killer, it would be all right, tho
    Negatives:
The major one: The third act in general
1- The review of the first killer was too sudden and quick [REALLY REALLY BAD]
2 - For the most of time I didn't think Sidney or Gale would die, especially because they already had killed Dewey before [BAD]
3 - I liked and believed in the "innocent character Ritchie". I was cheering for him doesn't turn out to be the killer, what ended up happening [KINDA BAD]
4- It had no chase scene at all during the whole movie or tension scenes during the third act like in [REALLY REALLY BAD]
Sid's scene with ghostface in Stu's house in Scream 1
Sid and Halley's car scene and Gale and Dewey's scene at the university in Scream 2
The every scene in John Milton's mansion in Scream 3
The scenes in Kirby's house in Scream 4
-Amber was the one character I even forget about it befere she revealing she was the killer. I actually remebered her name was Amber way after the movie was over [LITTLE BAD (it was my fault)]
    - The injuries from stabs and guns in this movies so not lethal. Sidney, Chad, Tara, Gale, Mindy all suffred a lot of injuries, specially Tara and Chad and they all managed to survive. It felt cheap by the end of the movie [KINDA BAD]
    - The least emblematic killers considering motifs, on-screen appearence, relevance and psycho interpretation [REALLY BAD]
    - The killers might be considered too obvious [REALLY BAD/KINDA BAD]
    - I didn't want to Judy to be killed off (so fast) [LITTLE BAD]
In conclusion every movie from 1-4 felt they nailed at the third act so the end of the movie ended up in a high note. I liked Scream (2022) but the whole third was was really not so good as the beggining and the middle of the movie. This drops my ratings on it by a considerate much. I defenitly think Scream 1 and Scream 2 are better than Scream (2022)

I’m sad you felt this way. I think they perfectly handled legacy cast without undoing any of the previous movie arcs (if Sidney was more involved or affected by Sam being Billy’s daughter it would show she has never grown/moved on, which she clearly has) and I love the new cast more than any other new cast since the first (way better than Scream 4s cast, aside from Kirby). With or without Sid an led Gale I’m 100% there opening night again for a Scream 6, I would love to see the carpenter sisters journey forward, the Meek twins were absolutely 2 of my favorites and I’m glad they survived, and I love the idea of Sam being Billy’s daughter cause when she killed Richie… it can add a lot of complexity to any stories going forward because people will always be suspicious of her sanity cause she went CRAZY on Richie (Richie being my other standout favorite from the movie)
Scream (1996) is still now and will probably forever be my favorite movie. And as much as Scream 2 was an amazing sequel, Scream (2022) is my second favorite installment and excites me by doing what Scream 4 said it would do, and set up a world where Ghostface can reign and we don’t NEED the legacy cast to rely on.

They should have just let Kevin Williamson write the movie. I think it wasn't bad at all but it also wasn't good in some parts where it had to deliver. Dewey's death was the most important thing they had to get right but they were lazy and made him die because of a stupid decision and bad luck. The killers were obvious which wasn't really a problem for me, however their motive wasn't really something new. I think the motive should have had a connection to Sam's secret to add more meaning to the Billy Loomis twist and its role in the story. At first I thought Sam is targeted because her father is Billy and the killer is related to a victim in the past that was killed by her father. I know we had the revenge motive already in Scream 2 but the relative of a victim attacking the child of a killer to get revenge would have been a new and fresh idea for the franchise in my opinion.

(Allow people to have their own opinions and be respectful before thinking of reading my review)
    For me....
Scream (2022) was on the same level as Scream 4.... totally disappointing. Scream (2022) felt like an extended episode of the Scream TV series. They didnt do anything new or fresh and regurgitated pretty much the same from every scream movie. The movie also relied too heavy on nastolgia bate and couldn't find its own grounding or originality. It was pretty much a copy and paste of the first movie.
Also the fact that they had an un-experineced scrawny teenager that took on certain legacy characters with tons of experience in this field is an insult to scream fans.
The twist was so predictable, the acting was very corny and the killers motives were probably the weakest in the franchise.
Also too many people survived and everything just felt forced with the main characters.
The only thing it had going for it, was the kills, especially Judy's death. It was quite emotional seeing her trying to save her son, but then getting savagely stabbed by Ritchie.
I am never putting my faith into a Scream movie ever again. God knows why people are giving this a higher rating than the original.... come on now.

I’d give the movie a 5/10 myself. A lot bothered me, I can be nitpicky at times, but Scream is one of my all time favorite movies so what follows has a lot to live up to.
Sidney had no reason to go back. If Dewey’s death was just to get her back to Woodsboro, then it’s a pointless one. She’s married with two young children. Her priorities are with them. He calls her and she doesn’t even know it’s him, meaning she doesn’t even have his contact info saved on her phone. But she goes back when he dies to put her life in danger and possibly leave her children motherless. It’s insane.
Also, did they give Stu a sister? Vince is her son, his nephew, I think… it’s a quick one-line reveal I missed. And he just so happened to have a fling with a member of the friend group the summer prior. I like Kyle Gallner as Vince. He was a menacing presence but his character does nothing and could have been removed and not made a difference.
Also, Kirby is alive somehow. There’s an Easter egg hidden in there, I believe.
I get that Billy is a killer, but after seeing how adultery ended his parents’ marriage, would he be the kind to cheat?
I wish they made Billy the older, father figure version he could’ve been rather than the killer version he was in Sam’s hallucinations.
That also would’ve saved us from the de-aged CGI ghoul we got.
And Chad. He suffers a gash to his leg I thought cut through an artery. It basically incapacitated him after two steps. But sitting out there for five hours without aid and he’s good.
Mindy disappears after Amber shoots Liv. And they never mention her. She should’ve been the one to kill Amber IMO. A little justice served by Randy’s niece because he himself was never given the opportunity.
Amber should’ve revealed herself in the basement walking up the steps behind Mindy by stabbing her in the back. Especially after their back and forth dialogue about being the killer. It would’ve impacted harder, I think.

You seem to have missed the part where Sydney tells Sam that you can’t out run it. Sidney had a right to be in the story, of course, but there’s no purpose for her to be there. She’s not related to anyone. She doesn’t live there. She has a family of her own to look after. Would you leave your wife and children behind to throw yourself in the middle of a killing spree? How would your wife feel about it? Sidney going to Woodsboro in this movie as it’s written makes her a bad wife and a terrible mother. As for her going to Woodsboro instead of waiting for killers to find her, that’s doing all the work for them. And if you think they’re trying to lure you out of hiding, that means they can’t find you and if you going to them is what they want to carry out their plan, maybe don’t go. But that’s me

The point is, Sidney was HIDING and was discovered. So why would she take the chance to just live her life full as day without a low profile when she was just told there was another killer on the loose doing the same crap? I'd be hunting them down too and given that she stopped like FIVE of them in the past beforehand, she's armed and capable. It's not about her being related to anyone, but she's a legacy character, the main survivor, the IT girl, the girl even her cousin tried to be as famous as, so she had some special purpose here. You're looking at this all the wrong way to just excuse her not being in the story and it's not going to work. Sidney came and did what she does best and now she can rest at night feeling as though it's finally over. She did better work than any police office or FBI agent ever could and that you can give her props for. Now sit down and stop being a clown about this you Sidney involvement HATER. I'm about to pull her out of the Scream world and come track you down. I feel like it's only realistic for the legacy characters to be sidelined the way they were. No one's trying to kill Sidney anymore and if they were anymore involved than they were, this would've been silly. Dewey was the ONLY reason Gale and Sid even came back which makes sense, come on. This movie showed me that Scream can actually stand on it's feet without them and it shocked the shit out of me. As far as the new cast, the TWINS were money. Loved them. They will be classics. I mean, it was an honour to claim Dewey’s life, so it’s not out of the question for the killer. My attention looks more at how Sidney is a mother now, and cared more for Jill than she did for Sam. Maybe it was a matter of trust, but that’s weak considering the theme of the movie practically blames Sidney and the success she’s created for the franchise. They really seemed to just cheese the cameos but otherwise I enjoyed it.

Stu’s house could’ve been as iconic to this franchise as the Myers house is to the Halloween franchise.
Imagine it 25 years after Billy and Stu’s massacre, stood in disrepair. Stu’s parents unwilling to sell it due to it being their family home with so many happy memories of Stu growing there as a child. They can no longer live there because of the pain of what happened there. Windows boarded, tired looking walls, overgrown lawn. It’s prominence grown by local lore over the years.
The residents of Woodsboro want it torn down as it brings shame to their community. The people who live there have turned their back on what brought there town infamy after 2 bloody ghostface massacres in 15 years. One inspired by the other.
The perfect stage for a final showdown.
Add Stu to the mix, but have him NOT be ghostface. Released from prison/medical facility after serving 25 years would make one hell of a movie IMO.

Honestly, I don’t get why people dont like the motives in 4 and 5 .. I think as far as a motive for the killers, they are the best ones, because they the meta social commentary that is specific for the times.. 4 - the rise of the influencer era, 5 - the toxic and never satisfied fandom .. I’m surprised people find this the weaker part pf the movies, whereas I love how creative they were with it.. the only thing I didn’t like about the movie was the lack of personality in Sydney.. I love Neve but it felt she was there for a paycheck, maybe it was the writing, but sooo much could have been done with her character even with a smaller screen time.. also I think it would have been better if they killed off Sam and it turned out that Tara becomes the main girl for future installments.. because Jenna is a much better actress than Melissa and I think she can carry the franchise and have a great development

Loved the movie and everything about it. If I had to point out some cons for me, I'd say the pacing towards the third act was too fast. I feel they could've added more before act 3. I also feel they could've developed other characters more. Such as Liv and Vince. We didn't see too much of them and it's obvious they had history. Vince was killed too quick and Liv didn't really give me what I needed to click with her before her death. The killer reveal wasn't a big letdown for me. I just felt it was kinda predictable. It was obvious Ritchie was gonna be the killer, but the other killer I thought it'd be Mindy, Chad, Tara or even Liv and Amber. Low and behold, it's Amber. Wish I could've seen more of Sidney and Gale, but I understand why they were pushed to the side a bit. Gives room for the new character and their stories. Overall, besides those cons, there's many pros that make the movie spectacular imo.

I can just about agree with everything you said. To me Scream 4 was the perfect setup to “pass the torch” and had Wes Craven not passed away that probably would have happened. That cast was way more interesting than this one. Personally I felt like the casting of Sam was not good, like, at all. The performance for Sam came off very soap-opera-y where it was so over acted that it made what should have been impacting scenes almost comedic. Perhaps if Jenna Ortega instead had portrayed Sam instead of Tara this may have changed things for the better because she seemed to understand the tone of this world better. I too have issue with the motivation of the killers. Coming off of Jill’s motivations for Scream 4 (which I still think was so ahead of it’s time it’s not even funny) I found Scream 5’s to be a bit of a let down. Crazy fans wanting to “reset” the franchise just doesn’t have the same impact and more importantly has just about zero connection to Sidney since ultimately their issue is with the Stab franchise and not actually the occurrences of Woodsboro so like, who cares? There was essentially nothing at stake for going in this direction. I personally wanted Sam to be Sidney’s daughter too which would have given us that connection making Sam’s decision of what path to take all the more conflicting. I mean they don’t even mention her mom so we just have to accept Billy hooked up with some random person and here’s the daughter we haven’t heard about like ever. Even in Scream 4 Sam would have been in the area right but no one is aware he has a daughter growing up in Woodsboro? They could have at least made Jack Quaids character Stu’s son, then this would have brought things full circle and given some connection to Sidney for him wanting to avenge Stu’s death.
There just seemed to be a lot of missed opportunities where even though there was reference to the past, none of those connections seem to actually matter or lead to anything when the actual killers just ended up being random fans of Stab. Again, who cares? And the extra Stab scenes shown with the “Randy” character, like why? Totally generic.
Mickey being a super-fan of film had a much more interesting motive than this in Scream 2. One of the killers at least should have had some direct connection to Sidney which at least would have strengthened the motive.
Though I agree this one was a bit more brutal technically (which isn’t really necessary for a Scream film but whatever) I actually think this was Ghostface’s worst representation in terms of his abilities because it seemed like every two seconds he was getting his butt kicked and people were surviving left and right. Especially in the first scene, I just felt like “Omg this Ghostface kind sucks look at this character fighting him off.” And this happened several times. One may argue “Well these killers being fans they may just be crappy at actually killing people” but it’s not like any other killers of the past were professional or anything. In fact all of the past killers except maybe Billy’s mom were fans of horror too and they had a relentless nature to them. I mean look at Charlie’s Olivia kill in 4, Mrs. Loomis’ Randy kill or freakin Roman’s Jennifer kill in 3…all of these were relentless that made you know Ghostface meant business and wasn’t playing. The Ghostface kills in 5 though violent yes, weren’t nearly as clever or creepy because he was so bad at it. And to think Dewey had survived all these past killers and dies at the hands of this crappy killing Ghostface seemed such a disservice to this character that we loved and deserved better. That he died was expected but at the hands of such a sloppy Ghostface was more cringey. I did enjoy this film too and I felt the tone was on the right track but it really fell victim to Exactly the commentary that is covered in the opening of Scream 4 where they talk about the repetitive impact of meta, there being no element of surprise, you don’t care about the characters because there’s no development etc. Scream 5 pretty much fell into all of these issues in my opinion.

I found that the kills were a bit lack lustre. Like Vince’s death was a quick jab to the neck and he was down. Wes was stabbed through the neck as well but slowly, there was no real chance scenes except Tara’s and the male twin, the killer reveals weren’t good. I wanted the mask to be torn off revealing the killer not them basically saying ‘I’m the killer’ look it was a good movie and I loved it but it had a lot of flaws. I just wish Wes was used better aside from the nice friend that dies after showering. Judy Shouldn’t have been killed off either considering there’s now no cop at all in the series (unless you count Mark who is Syd’s husband?) I just feel like they missed the mark (pun not intended) with this one. It just felt like maybe poor writing let it down? I loved the plot and how it brings in new final girls Tara and Sam but they needed to give Gale and syd more time on screen. Even a funeral scene for Dewey and have someone at the funeral get a text saying ‘do you think it’s over?’ Like we needed more than what we got idk I’m just rambling now

My favorite part: Basic Instinct vibes with Sam stabbing. I actually enjoyed watching that moment a lot! After a very dry and almost reluctant acting job by Barrera, she finally let go and came out of her shell. That might have been the intention from the beginning. Worst part: I found myself impatiently waiting for Neve Campbell to show up most of the film. This is who I came to see. I agree the trio was sidelined. As much as I didn't enjoy that, I feel that was necessary though, if the film makers intentions was to move on. But then again, why do they have too? Do they propose Sam will be the new Sidney and save the day? The only draw for the next film for me would be to see how they pull that off. Best scene: the opener! I was really drawn into Ortega and I believed what was happening and it was tense. She did an amazing performance through the whole movie I thought. Good stuff: the emotion in this movie. There hasn't really been any throughout the series. Deaths: I didn't care about anyone except Ortega and the trio. I want those feelings back I got when these were killed- Casey, Tatum, Hallie, Jennifer, Kirby. The surprise and the sadness.

I would give it a much higher score myself but I do agree with most of your points. I think they should've shrunk the new cast or left the original cast (at least Sidney and Gale) out completely in order to leave time to develop the new characters more. For me, it's not the original cast that keeps me watching Scream movies, it's Ghostface. By now I just wanted to see Sidney happy already and watch Ghostface take on some new people for a change. I liked Tara the most, followed by Sam (mainly for her potential as an antiheroine in future sequels) and I liked Mindy well enough. But the others were severely underdeveloped in this one, much like the new characters in previous sequels. My only hope with that is that they left so many of these characters alive in order to make a Scream 6 where they'll get more development. As for the commentary and motives: I strongly enjoyed the toxic fandom commentary. Being a part of the star wars fandom, I could honestly see some psycho go to extreme lengths to get a 'better' movie they think they're entitled to. BUT I do think the trailer was misleading and made me think of a potentially better motive. I honestly thought someone (possibly a surprise Randy who didn't really die) was going to kill people linked to previous killers so that another Ghostface would never happen again. I was looking forward to seeing how all of the new cast was related to previous killers and I didn't really get that, and you're right, the killings seemed kinda random (especially Vince). I also realized Sam wasn't in any real danger pretty early on since the plan was to frame her as the killer. I would've liked it better if someone wanted to kill her because of a belief she'd turn out just like her father. Her acting did fall a little flat for me for the most part, but her going full Billy at the end made me excited for her future potential. I just wish I'd seen her take on more of his expressions, mannerisms, etc so the relation was more obvious and interesting throughout the movie and not just at the end.

That film really stood out. Scream 5 just felt basic and brutal, but that’s it. I didn’t like the motivation in this one. It wasn’t bad, but it doesn’t hold up compared to the first 4 scream films. With Scream, for the franchise to continue to focus on the legacy cast they'd have to keep coming up with new reasons for new psychos to don the Ghostface costume and go after Sidney forever. It's just not sustainable for making more movies. I'd like a new trilogy following Sam and Tara, with Sidney and Gale popping in every now and then but not being so involved.

Everyone needs to re analyze Dewey's death scene. He's attacked in the hospital where there's access to blood , operating rooms and doctors. We see a deputy who is killed. There's an ambulance and coroner van outside. We don't see who's in the body bag. We don't see the name on the body bag tag. When Sydney arrives Gale is still in the hospital after Dewey's "Death" They never actually say Dewey' dead. Judy dies which now leaves no sheriff and I'm pretty sure Radio silence would expect a backlash killing a legacy cast member. They always keep us on edge when it comes to Dewey and at the end Sam asks Gale how's she's doing Gale responds, "Ask me in a couple of days." Also if they kill a legacy cast member I think they would of at least gave Dewey a memorial service

The writing let this down. From many characters hardly being in this, before they were killed, not killed or revealed as a killer. While the other killer was so predictable, because the writer's gave way too many clues.
A main characters backstory, and a cameo appearance surrounding it,was the best aspect of this.

    Spoilers for the movie!
Finally, an honest review. All the other reviews just seemed like they were lying to make the movie money, like with "scariest movie in the franchise" and "almost better then the original". For me it didn't feel like a Scream movie, it was way to fast, they threw away a lot of the characters for the sake of nothing at all. The main 3 came in way to last. Dewey's death was left for nothing with only 2 scenes of Gale being sad, Sidney not even showing an expression, and Gale moving on just too fast. I couldn't feel any emotion because of that, and the way he died.
I appreciate the Wes stuff, but don't bring back Judy and give her a son to just kill them off for a 5 second banner, they could have named Wes something else and named someone else that, or they could have just not given Judy a son. (Did Wes want to be killed in a movie or something? I get he was a horror director but I don't think he would like to die in a movie.)
I really liked Sam and Tara though, I feel like they took away the movie. With Sam I feel like the whole movie it was getting to the point of her murdering someone. I really think she might go to the killer side in Scream 6. Tara was amazing, I don't have much to say about her right now except I loved her relationship with Sam.
To many references. References took away from scenes we could have got in my opinion. We keep seeing Richie watching Netflix and TH-cam when those scenes could have been switched with other characters.
There's no horror in this movie, except for the opening scene. For me the whole movie was full of references and dumb comedy that wasn't funny. Even Wes's scene was more funny then scary. Or more sad. Not even the 3rd act was scary.
That's all I can say, good honest review though.

Not to mention roman is Sidney’s brother and he’s the one who corrupted Billy into becoming a killer in the first place. Gave him advice and taught him how to be a skilled killer. Let’s put respect on the man’s name for his charisma. The guy was a one man army in the third film too. He’s the only who did it solo.

I thought Scream 2022 was decent, but I had many of the same issues you pointed out. For me, it had sort of the opposite problem of Scream 4. In the 4th one, I thought the first two thirds of the movie were kind of so/so, but the third act and killer reveal really saved the movie from being forgettable. Scream 5, on the other hand, was relatively strong up until the end, but the killers and their motive kind of ruined it. It wasn't the motive per se, but more that it seemed disconnected with the Ghostface we had seen (and heard on the phone) up to that point. The killings seemed angry and personal, so I had a hard time buying that the killers actually had no beef with the victims and just wanted to create source material for a new Stab movie. I also agree about most of the supporting characters being underdeveloped, and I was bummed that Gale and Dewey didn't have more scenes together. I thought Judy and Wes really sold the mother-son dynamic for the few scenes they had, but pretty much everyone other than Sam and Tara was forgettable. I hope they come out with an extended cut that has more character development for the supporting characters.

This movie was hands down the worst of the series. The music was odd, the characters weren’t interesting, the story was too convoluted, had ridiculous CGI, the killers had weak motivation, the short and tall heights of the revealed killers made no sense, and the actors all blended together and you didn’t really care about them, and the suspense was severely lacking. Sam wasn’t a great main character either.
Don’t agree? Watch the first one and then watch this one again back to back. The feeling is just totally different. It’s bad. Really bad. Dare I say…Disrespectfully bad.

  • @Seventh.Voyage
    @Seventh.Voyage 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

I agree with you. Wasn’t bad but could have been sooo much better. The potential was there. My biggest gripes with it were the characters, the killers motive, and and the lack of screen time by the OG cast.
I literally didn’t care about any of the new characters other than tara. Jenna Ortega was brilliant in the movie.
As for the motive, it felt lazy. I would have much preferred that the lead was not related to billy and that the killer was instead related to billy. This person learned about what happened to billy, is obviously crazy as well. Then have Tara and Sam related to Sidney somehow. That way, the motive is for the killer to get sid, tara, and Sam all back at the original house and to finish what billy couldn’t. The whole we thought these movie endings sucked so we want to write a better one was just a lame excuse to kill.
Also not having the OG cast in it more was a sad. I felt misled there for sure. Having Tara be attacked in the beginning (and if they went with the arch that her and Sam are related to Sid) then Sidney obviously would have shown up earlier in the film and had a chance to actually have scenes with Dewey.
Again I enjoyed the movie but it left me with a lot of “I wish they did this instead”

I loved it! Only complaint is the teenagers ages were really inconsistent… Some actually looked like realistic 17/18-year-olds and others looked clearly 25… If you are going to cast older people as teenagers they need to all be older or cast all younger people because it was confusing and they didn’t all look to be in the same grade. But I honestly really enjoy this film, it was exciting, impactful, loved the callbacks and the ghostface reveals surprised me. I very much think it lived up to the first couple films.

Great critique. You nailed it. The characters/actors in the new film are terrible. I recently watched the MTV series Scream. This is where they pulled these characters from. Vapid, vain, narcissistic characters that don't appear disturbed, sad, or shocked by the deaths around them. They are more concerned with the petty issues in their lives. They are more concerned about their appearance and having toxic relationships. WTF? There is an episode where the male characters put a drunk, passed-out partygoer on a boat and stick him in the middle of the lake, late at night. Forget the killer, what if he rolled over and tipped the boat? No one cares. Considering the killer, why would these kids do that when there is a killer on the loose? Several people have already been killed up to this point, These characters, on TV and in the new Scream 2022 are Unlikable people. Like the Walking Dead, they killed off all the great, interesting characters for boring, lifeless characters we don't like. It's all about gender and race than writing interesting, 3-dimensional, complex characters that we care about. The writers pretend that having a lesbian character is good enough and having any depth is not important. What's important is will she overcome the bias of other school kids? Will she find true love in a biased world? Yes- in 2022, it appears that homophobic behavior is rampant in schools and society. This show is out of touch with reality. Lesbian characters are fine- but give us more to the character. After 6 episodes I gave up. I didn't care about these horrible people. They should be getting together to discuss how they are going to stop the killer. No. It's as if the killings are a natural part of life so they deal with it with a shrug like everything else.
Hollywood: Write good characters. Write a good, original story. In fact, approach the new script like this: If it's been done in the previous films: don't put it in your script. Avoid cliches, and don't remake the original and disguise it as something new. Make something new. You've had 10 years since the last film to get it right. How about leaving clues, making it look like Sindey and Gail are the killers, Have the killer show himself to Dewey. The killer leaves and Dewey writes the Letters S... and I... in the blood pooling around his body. This creates suspicion and has people's minds reeling. Was it S I dney? Did she finally crack? Is Gail helping her? What's her motive? She has lost her audience. A new book will make her famous again. Is this a red herring, or are they the culprits? How about someone kills the killer at the end of the 2nd act? The following day, when everyone is feeling safe, the one who killed the killer is killed, and people realize there are more than two killers, or someone was mistaken for the killer and killed by mistake. Again, you have the audience thinking. In the 3rd act, it is discovered there were originally 3 killers, and two were twins. (There are several horror films made in the past with a killer siblings trope). They could have also called out or poked fun of how the killer's monolog explains this and that and why this and why that, and too much for their own good, and all the monologuing is pointless because the bad guys have the upper hand and all they have to do is shoot the victims, but no, they keep on talking. This is what ultimately gets the bad guys killed. I'm not even a screenwriter and I got better ideas than the new scream.
