  • Although it isn't common to compare a 50mm lens to an 85mm lens, many photographers/videographers may find themselves in the predicament of having to choose between these two expensive and masterful lenses. Let me help you make a decision between these two lenses.Specifically, we will take a look at the canon RF 50mm f1.2 L lens and the canon RF 85mm f1.2 L lens.
If you had to choose between the canon RF 50mm f1.2 L lens and the canon RF 85mm f1.2 L lens, which one would you go for? Currently, I use both of these canon RF lenses on my Canon EOS R and canon EOS R6. Eventually, I plan on upgrading to the Canon EOS R5.

Thank you for the video, I have both and I'd say you're spot on, I'm not a pro, just an enthusiast... the 85 is magical but it's too big and heavy for casual shooting, I love the 50 because it's more practical and focuses closer

Brandon ~ Thank-you so much! This was SO helpful! I loved this video and your very thorough insights! I loved your music, too (as a fellow musician! Wow, impressive!) I recently picked up the Canon EOS R and the Canon RF 85mm 2.0. So I'm leaning toward the Canon RF 50mm 1.2 for all the reasons you shared: versatility for BOTH individual & group portrait work, more affordable, and as I already have the 85 focal length in a solid, decent lens with the 2.0. I've still been "on the fence" on this for months now, because that 85 focal length is amazing. But I just finished a family session, and at times would have liked the 50 focal length. Truly one of the most helpful videos for me on this topic that I have ever seen! Thank-you very much :)!!

I find myself using the 85mm lens more than the 50mm lens for portraits. For weddings I'm usually using the 35mm and 85mm as well.

Nice. It’s funny because I go back and forth on downgrading to the 85mm f2 and putting the rest of the money towards another lens. But I think that’s just the gear acquisition syndrome kicking in. Overall, I’m very happy with these two lenses :) which 35 do you have?

Probably "gear acquisition syndrome" on my part as well, but meanwhile these lenses are doing a really great job.
Just picked up the RF 28-70mm f/2L this week and it's completely amazing! I think I'll upgrade my old EF 16-35mm f/2.8L with the new RF 15-35mm f/2.8L IS next and then get around to upgrading my RF primes later. I'm still using my EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS (version 2) because I don't like the new RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS because of the extending barrel, but most importantly because of how many turns are required on the zoom ring to get from 70mm to 200mm. I'll probably keep using my EF version until Canon comes out with a new RF version of the 70-200mm.

Two spectacular lens. Try to get both. If you can't, I agree, 50mm first. Many very skilled portrait photographers will tell you that they prefer the intimacy with the model that the 50mm focal length provides. The best portraits are intimate, close, and personal. Not remote. I have both. Both are amazing, superb, lenses. I feel very fortunate indeed to be able to own and use these lenses. Personally I don't think the f/2 version of the 85 is really comparable to the 85 f/1.2 version. The auto focus is not as good. At least that is my opinion.

Hey Brandon, really good review on the two lenses, but I have some constructive criticism for this video (please take with a grain of salt): (1) So much of the video is on your face and you holding up the lenses, I wish you showed more image samples instead. For example, at 7:50 you were talking about a flare comparison between the two lenses, but you showed just one example shot on the 50. (2) When showing images, can you overlay text of which lens it was shot with and some basic camera settings? This is especially important in places where you are showing images from both lenses like the intro. (3) When comparing the lenses, it would be nice to see the same scene/subject shot by each lens side by side. Otherwise, the video/comparison is good and informative.
