Canon RF 85mm F1.2 Review (vs. EF Version)

  • This week Chris and Jordan take a closer look at the Canon RF 85mm F1.2L and - no surprises here - find it to be a technically excellent optic. They also compare it with the original EF-mount 85mm F1.2L, which is no slouch for its age, to see just how far the design has advanced in the past 15 years.

    Using the EF 85 1.2 II professionaly for years now. Sharpness even wide open is more than you need for portraits. Flares can make for very beautiful pictures. For weddings i would like faster focusing speed but i tend to do the "quick stuff" closer in with 35mm or 50mm anyway, so even that is do able. its already a lovely very characteristic lens, and with the better (eye) autofocus the eos R gives me it even became more useful. If you have the money: buy the RF. if you wanna save, get the EF. just dont try to photograph running kids and dogs close-up, that does not work with the older lens.

    I have the second EF version, and it works extremely well with the updated eye auto focus on the EOS R. In fact it focuses faster and more precisely than on any of the old DSLRs! In very low light too. That adapter is genius.
    I like the imperfections of the old one. Call it "character" :-)

    • @Digi20
      @Digi20 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      same here. occassionally i silently sweared using it for wedding reportage and missing a moment due to the slow autofocus, but with the years i learned to grab the second camera with a shorter faster lens and going closer when those moments unfold. the 85 works best for slower paced moments. you get a feeling when to use it and how. and then its a lovely piece of glass.

    The original 85mm f/1.2L was actually the FD mount version. The FD 85/1.2L was released in 1980. It was actually a slight evolution of the FD 85mm f/1.2 SSC released in 1976.

    I'm shooting with the RF 85mm f/1.2L USM lens and have since decommissioned my EF 85mm f/1.2L II USM lens. I enjoyed the video but I feel it didn't cover the features of the RF lens in any depth (for example: the Blue Spectrum Refractive Optics, Air Sphere Coatings, Fluorine & ED Elements). These features (some of them new to the RF lens), in addition to the advantages of the RF lens Mount, results in exceptional differences in eliminating LOCA, reducing coma and cutting lens flare & ghosting down to non-existent levels. For everyday photography, much of this is overlooked. But in more specialized photography (like Astro-photography), the difference in image quality is absolutely extraordinary. Canon made the RF 85mm f/1.2L to exceed the EF 85mmL lenses on many levels and it shows when you're able to compare the differences. Just my thoughts.

RF 50 IS! 85 F2 IS!

    • @liaminwales
      @liaminwales 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      what do you think will look different at 1080p?
      you can always grab your camera with a zoom lens and set it to 85mm and 1080p to see the angle of view.
      if you have a FF, on APS C it's 1.6x so about 50mm = 80mm FF and on micro 4/3 it's about 2x (+ any video crop) so about 40mm 4/3 = 80mm FF
      same for aperture FF 100mm f8 = APS C 60mm f5.6 = micro 4/3 50mm f2 give or take (playing lose on the maths to keep the numbers simple :P)
      think that's correct, mostly

  • @Spartan117KC
    @Spartan117KC ปีที่แล้ว

    The street price for a new Canon RF 85MM 1.2 lens is still over 1700 dollars more than I just paid for a used EF MKII 85MM 1.2. I’m glad RF mount lenses are here with more advanced designs and coatings, partially because it’s dropping the price for amazing glass that still has a long usable lifespan. (Photography isn’t where I make my living, so while it would nice to have the RF, I certainly don’t need it for my portraiture photography.)

  • @marko25959

    Canon has has a FD 85 mm f/1.2, would be interesting to compare it, too. Sure, the AF with that lens is even slower than the first EF-version. But sharpness and bokeh might be good and pleasing in comparison with the EF. The RF-lens seems to be a little to sharp to me.

    I got an FD 85/1.2 for my Eos R for $400 ... no autofocus but optically superior to the first gen EF lens and about on par with second gen EF for sharpness. The larger image circle of the FD is a better fit for the R system. Really if you're on EF than stick with EF. If you're on the R system, or migrating to the R system and don't already have the EF 85 1.2 ... If you need autofocus buy the RF otherwise get the FD. If you already have the second gen EF, it's not worth the upgrade to RF.

    The EF85L was my most used lens. I loved it as a family member.... Then the RF85 came and my world changed. The RF85 is so fast and reliable I can work all day at f/1.2 if I want to. With the old EF I sometimes had to spend a lot of work coloring away red, green, purple edges... these days are gone. The new af is so fast that it's good enough for moving heads... every shot at f/1.2 is in focus, all the time. The RF85 is a gamechanger for me. I would change systems for this lens.

    I think I disagree about the slow AF of the EF 85/1.2 II, as it's pretty good if you are already in the ballpark, just rubbish for people who do really close really far AF tests, which aren't that realistic. (It needs a lot of AF steps due to wanting to land in the middle of the small DoF.) I actually photographed Gulls catching bread people were throwing up in the air and got a >90% AF hit rate on a 5D2. (I think it's a little slower on the high-MP Canons, perhaps as they go for a more exact focus as you'll see small misses more.)
    The problem the EF lens has is lots of purple on just out-of-focus high-contrast edges (e.g. white shirt to black jacket).
    |Oh and mine is a bit sharper at f/1.2 that the one you used, plus really sharpens up by f/2.2.)

    Under $1k, 85EF L II is bargain of the century. Don't get me wrong RF 85 is optically better but RF mount itself is very limiting while EF can be adapted to pretty much all mirrorless systems with af. There is a popular thread discussing about which L lenses perform better on GFX 44x33 sensor and 85L is right up there. Can give 110f2 GF a run for its money. 85L Video on s1h or z6 also tempting.

    For photojournalism/street photography, if someone wanted this focal length, the 85 1.4 is probably a better bet. 1.4 is Tonêh enough for almost anything, and the excellent IS will really come in handy.

    I’m actually saving just for this RF lens, looks fenomenal, maybe by the end of the year I would be able to purchase it :)

      I’ve rented it several times. It’s off the chain. It is the next lens purchase for me. You won’t be discussions 😻

    Shooting events and red carpets, this lens will probably never be part of my arsenal. Most of my portrait work is shot with a 70-200 or a 17-70 to give me more elbow room and depth of field. But this lens looks great.

    I can't justify the price. The 1.4 L version looks almost identical in every way and costs less than half of that. It also weights less than half a Noct and has IS. Hope they are doing a RF version of it. Event the old 1.8 version is not that bad. Yes it has strong CA, and it's not sharp in the corners wide open. But the former is fixable in post and the latter doesn't matter for most of the images you're going to take with such a lens.

    Being honest, I'm just enjoying the amount of bokeh they have incorporated in the video. 😎

    3:23 should've focused on the background, and blurred that face to really show the strength of f/1.2 !

    The best widefield astrophotography lens Canon has ever produced. Sure, it’s like hanging a coffee can off the front of your camera but it has no peers in the Canon ecosystem when it comes to Milkyway panos and larger deep sky objects.

    It still amazes me that you're testing a designed portrait lens, the EF version, against the new, Rf Version, that is now designed for video/photography and not understanding at all what the original EF version was designed for. Portraiture and that's it period. For other things you used the Ef 1.8 version. And now, you can probably buy the EF 1.4 and EF 1.2 version cheaper than the Rf version. You'd get the best of both worlds.
    The EF 1.2 version wasn't for flowers, wasn't for landscapes, wasn't for backgrounds, wasn't for close focus. It was for portraits, period. So, testing it for anything other than portraits shows you don't even understand what the lens line was designed for. You're showing me a picture of a flower with the EF 85 F1.2? Why? Seriously why?
    And then, you minimize the whole reason for the lens. As you show very little Portrait work with it. Which is the whole reason it was designed. It is still today probably the best portrait lens ever made. The only one that competes is the EF 200mm F2. I have that one also. And shooting on the R5 they are still both amazing. On the 5 DS R the 85mm was a pain to nail focus. The R5 nails focus easy. But the 5 ds R still has a better final image.
    An FYI. The fall off from center sharp to edge going out of focus. What do you think that does for the portrait? It softens as you head towards the outside of the lens. It also will soften the bokeh look. Why would you want the edges to be sharp for portrait photography? You don't. Why would you want the bokeh to be sharp going towards the edge of the glass for portrait photography? You don't. Welcome to portrait photography 101.
    God I wish they had people that understood the basics reviewing these things instead of TH-camrs.

      I had both. I sold sigma ane main reason was CA. On sigma it was quite bad, that even Lr had sometimes problems. Sigma was also bigger, because of adapter. Bokeh wise quite similar
