  • Apple CEO Tim Cook appeared today before Congress (House Judiciary Committee) to discuss potential antitrust legislation, their control over items like the iPhone app store, and Apple's general industry superiority. Committee members grilled Tim Cook on whether Apple is indeed treating competitors and small businesses fairly as they begin to achieve market dominance. This is CNET's supercut of the live event, specifically everything referring to what Apple had to say, but you can also watch the Facebook, Amazon, and Google supercuts here at CNET.

Exactly. Congress seems to want 3rd party developers go to town on their App Store. Android is better for that. If consumers wanted that more they would be on android. If they wanted to charge 60% commission they can. Developers will move to android. That’s competition.

baby bean The property owner of a mall isn’t considered a monopolist by renting out sections to retailers. Even if it was the only mall in the state, nothing is stopping other people from building their own mall. It’s anti-competitive if they prevent people from buying land and building their own malls. It’s a monopoly if they go out and buy all the available land and fill them with their malls. Apple’s devices were developed and built by them; that is their “store front” they created it, the phone hardware is like the land upon which a mall property owner builds their store front. Nothing is stopping another person from making their own device and setting up their own App Store. Yeah it’s near impossible for most to get into the phone making industry. But that’s bc the big companies in it now are good at what they do, and have spent many billions making their devices good. Being good at what you do doesn’t mean you’re anticompetitive.

The reason they keep cutting him is because they only have 5 minutes to ask a series of questions, so as soon as they get the answer they need or want, they will ask another question right away. Since having the most information possible is primordial, it also prevents the interviewed person to take as many time as they want to answer a question, thus not allowing Congress to ask all the questions needed.
If they wouldn't cut them, they would probably only have time for 1 questions instead of 5 or 6. And they needed as much information as they can to take appropriate measures.

The Mobile platform can make SO MUCH money and app developers ranting over a 30% cut by apple which has been the same forever! (apple has always been upfront about it) you’re not developing for Android.. you’re developing for a much better ecosystem and customer base that statistically spends more.

    • @shanep.7184

The fact is that the 30% cut breaks some business models. Spotify can’t profit if they have to take that big of a cut while charging the same as Apple Music. That being said, The developers need to somehow pay Apple. Office 365 charges $80/year and includes like 5 (objectively simple) apps. Charging $99/year is not nearly enough when you get cutting edge machine learning, AR, and other APIs, Xcode, App Store hosting, and the luxury of not having to market and sale of the billions of hardware these software run on.
