A nice repair video. I really hope someone sends you the circuit diagram so you can make part 2, fixing the USB. ;) A sort of off-topic question here: Are you going to make a teardown/comparison of the new roland TB-03 and TB-09 like you did with the TB-3 and TR 8? I presume people are very curious to see, if the Roland Boutique models are pretty much the same on the inside as the aira models. Best regards. Günna
I just switched mine on this evening and it has the exact same problem. No power. It was working fine last month. I’m not an electrician of any sort, but seems it could be an easy fix if I could find someone to fix it ! I really do like the controller for its 2 midi outs.
I have this in the 49-key version. It's a great little controller (I never got the Automap thing to work, personally). For what you paid for yours, and an easy fix, that's a good find. If I were you, I'd be charging something (no matter how small) for your music.
Great video as always! Super helpful for the audio DIYers out there... i've been looking at this keyboard for a while now, strange that it seems to be better than the 2nd gen version with single lcd. these guys are getting hard to source! Novation is doing a great job with their latest synths though. There's something to be said about minimalism (e.g. using the Circuit grid for display), but i do hope they keep making the SL series midi controllers that can be fully programmed with midi and on-screen labels for computerless setups.
You should consider fixing the usb because there were quite a few critical corrections and firmware upgrades for this unit, and you need the usb for that. Maybe a part 2? ;-)
Very nice repair video. The blown components appear to be just protection fuses and as such are sacrificial parts that died doing what they are supposed to do. Well worth a repair attempt. The diode you replaced may well have been the power supply fault but if that is the case it would not have been a reverse protection diode as that is wired across the power input not inline with it. Karl
Hi Markus - great vid! I've got a fully working Remote Zero SL (the top half of your controller) and it's probably the best 25 quid I've ever spent on eBay. Works great as a stand-alone controller (without a pc) as you can customise the display to tell you what each knob, button or slider is changing.
Best part about these Novation boards is the backlit knobs. Pads and buttons usually have lights, but it's uncommon to find knobs with lights in my experience. It's a necessity for knobs that spin endlessly. I wanted to use mine but I couldn't figure out the Automap software for the life of me, so I stuck with Roland A-Pro for all my CC# and Sysex commands. The action was pretty good on the Novation but it was a little noisier than the Roland.
I had a behringer bcr2000 a few years back and yes the led ring on the rotary knobs was a very useful thing to have. this is fine for what I want it for and cheap also.
Ah ha! I remember I had a bcr2000 as well. I paired it with the Dave Smith Instruments Mopho Desktop Module. I couldn't figure out the editing software for the BCR either! T__T Question: Does this controller have Aftertouch? I think it does. That's one of the perks about the Remote SL, or was aftertouch only added in the Mark II version?
Hi, yes it has aftertouch, you can always tell when one of the connectors look like a plastic ribbon with carbon patterns within it, that one goes under the whole length of the keys and is a pressure sensor.
you should try to fix the USB too in my opinion. I think the SL controllers main advantage is that it gives you feedback from your daw if connected to the computer. I'm not sure if it works with the regular midi connection.
Nice little find. Sure beats getting an Argos off brand keyboard for the MIDI out. Shame about the lack of schematics :( I'd have had a go had it been me and had the info required. Probably sending it through a powered USB hub without a PC connected and making sure there wasn't anything present on the data lines. Cool vid Markus.
Yet another, very informative video. Just goes to show how an easy fix to someone like you can make a seemingly dead thing come back to life. I only wish on my occasional boot sale trips I could stumble across things like you manage to uncover :) All the best, David.
Hi David, I go at 5am every sunday morning rain or shine and I do not always find things like this but thankfully most of my finds have been found by other buyers who come and find me and tell me where something is that may interest me, I too see certain things that other buyers look for and in return tell them there is something for them on another stall. but I do often come home empty handed.
I got 5 21' monitors. Acer X223W models. Everyone dead no response at all 2 of them whistled when plugged in but nothing else. So cheap inside. Turned out everyone of them was a 1000uf 10V cap had burst. I replaced them with 15V 1000uf caps and they all work perfectly.
I love it when I hear that high pitched tone as its almost always a Capacitor fault. I even have a doctors stethoscope for listening to electronics and that can sometimes help in diagnosing problems.
Thanks Michael. I placed the background music on soundcloud just incase anyone wanted to use it themselves. soundcloud.com/markusfuller/markusfuller-youtube-musicwav
Those fatar keys are notorious for developing a squeaky noise on springs, has i came to learn. Now that would be great tutorial how to solve that issue. I have 2 bad keys on mk2.
I have the SL61 and the no keyboard Zero SL. The power of these devices is in the Automap software. It would have definitely been worth fixing the USB side to be able to use Automap.
I've got its older brother X-Station and I had to replace burnt lcd on it once. It was a little tricky I had to swap the two pins on generic display to match the polarity and add resistor to match brightness. It works fine now aside erratic rotary encoders. Unfortunately it is not so easy to find replacement encoders / pots. Do you think it worth to try apply some deoxidizer inside? May be you have some video related to encoders repair? Thanks for another great video!
I have found modern encoders and pots are a pain to try and get any form of cleaning fluid in. It's by design I guess. You could do worse than trying the wonderul chinese sites for encoders and pots to match - if they are half way standard they usually have compatible parts. Banggood.com would be a good place to start, Miniinthebox.com also has quite the selection of bits and bobs, usually more expensive though. Also expect quite the waiting time for your purchase.
Hey, not sure if you read the comments but, if you do, would you mind giving me a piece of advice? I have an SL25, which used to work just fine via USB with automap. Now, connecting it to the usb powers it on, all menus and knobs work fine. However, it does not seem to send any midi signal (my DAW, Reaper, does not recognize it as connected). I even tried to to connect it via a USB midi interface, powering it via USB and then an adapter. The interface is recognized, but the keyboard connected to it is not, it does not send midi signal. I am a bit confused because I would have expected not to power on at all, if the USB connector was faulty, but the problem only seems to affect data, and on both the midi ports and the USB. Does this make any sense at all to you, knowing how the board works? I have reinstalled automap and drivers of course, just in case.
I have several MIDI-controlers and all the MIDI goes through the USB. DAW and stand-alone. Do they differ? Anyway, lost a device once because of reversed polarity. It's a shame it's still allowed to have hard to distinguish opposite systems. Where does that come from?
Hello my friend, I have a question you might be able to help, I have a peavey studio mix that only receives midi signal from the DAW, if I move a fader with the mouse it will move the physical fader on the midi controller, but if I move the fader or transport control, it does nothing, do you think it could be the midi outputs maybe blown and could be fixable or could it be something more serious? Do you think there could be a way around to getting midi signal out from the controller? Great video that you made, I'll make a video of what mine does and share it , maybe you can spot something on the peavey studio mix, Thanks for your tutorials, very cool that you can open and fix it.
The components that were blown off were marked "FP" on the silkscreen, which leads me to think they might have been fuses. Try to short out the pads and see if it works.
You can't couple USB data signal through a capacitor, because they are ground-referenced voltages! The capacitors were likely across the USB power purely for noise suppression.
Uhe USB being broken suggests that it was being used (or someone tried to power it from the USB?), so why not attempt the fix? I bet the chip still works.
Yes great little tool to put under the desk for when you need something like that. I also picked up the Phat-Boy midi controller which is very handy but it works so no repair video to be made on that one. ps I hope you are feeling better :-)
Hello Markus. Do you know if it possible to upgrade the XY pad on it (maybe with a laptop trackpad). The touchpad is notoriously horrible on this line.
Hey Markus What do you mean when you say those missing components were blown off? blown off by heat? Your videos kick started my electronics repair - I finally fixed an SH101 today - fixed a few non-working keys using your technique and also fixing and calibrated the bender and changed a couple of the sliders. Cheers and thanks
Awesome - thanks for replying! Another question for you - It's just come to my attention one of the SH101 keys I fixed seems to retrigger every so often when I release the key - so on the down press and again on the release - atleast it is working but I am wondering if you have any idea what I could do to resolve it from doing that> Cheers
Oh that is strange what you say about the SH-101. to be honest I have never seen that problem before. I would just get back in and maybe swop the rubber plungers from one end to the other and see if a different key does it. that way you can at least see if its a keyboard contact problem or not.
Great stuff as always Markus! Thanks for the video! So the pots and sliders send out midi too (without re-setting anything in software over the broken USB)? GREAT find and fix for a fiver! Keep up the great work!
Hi Markuz, i always love to watch your videos and i learn a lot from them, I have a Novation Remote 37SL Limited wich is basicly the same model only with 37 key and a costum Neon painted housing THe Unit still works fine after replacing the USB input, But since a few months the display on the right does not show all the lines (i don't think the display is broken because in some setting part of the lines show up. Is there a way to repair this ? Thnx in advance, and keep up the good work
Can you please make the disassembly video for SL MK III? I'm thinking of changing the key colour scheme to reverse (or rather white to black and black to silver. I did it with MK II and Remotes for people but a bit worried about MK III as it's much newer and more expensive. Thx
@@markusfullerIt's OK. I think will probably be the first person in the world to take it apart on video because there are zero videos and manuals, I think everyone is waiting for their extended warranties to run through LOL. I know I'm the only guy who did a video on Monoprice "Stageright" MIDI keyboard, and posted the link to its manual, that was next to impossible to find. It is a surprisingly great and simultaneously unbelievably cheap MIDI controller with semi-weighted keys setting it apart from most Novation MIDI controllers (even their flagship keyboards like the SL Remote/ Marks II and III you and I have). Not sure if you are a piano player, but if you are - definitely look into Monoprice Stageright/Worlde's Blue Whale
very interesting video ! I have a problem with a knob on my novation launch control and I would like to replace it...how can I do ? any solutions ? (about references, schematics, how to test it,etc...)
Hi Manuel. I would firstly try and clean the knob then if that does not make it work look for a replacement, maybe email novation first for a replacement and if no luck the go to RS electronics or Mouser.
Hmm, from the silk screen it looks like two blown fuses and a missing cap on the USB port: F1, FP2 and C33. Given that (at least the old) USB protocol supports up to 500mA max, at least the fuses should imho not be a big deal, as there is also an existing FP1 and F2. Chances might be good that those are the same components... just whack some similar size fuses in and see what happens. ;)
That's a nice piece of hardware you used. I'm looking more into midi hardware like that (rack mounted/keyboardless). Could you possibly direct me to any channels that talk about them?
Oh the synth is an old Roland MC-505 groovebox. I did a seperate video on repairing that. I think they are a bit dated now but I keep this just for the sounds as they are quite old-skool
That was interesting but I'd hoped it was going to be about the mod wheel joystick. I own a Novation synth very similar to this and the joystick is defective. It puts everything out of tune unless I hit it to correct it but the correction only lasts seconds sometimes. I understand it's a common problem. I can get around it by controlling it with a controller but then I can't use certain features. Any advice?
the mod wheel is only 2 potentiometers. maybe one of them has become defective so Im guessing it could be replaced if you can find a similar sized pot.
markusfuller Well, okay. Maybe I guess. Thanks for the help I appreciate it. I'm not sure it would be a defective pot though. It works alright. It's just when it is back in center, when your hand is off of it, the pitch shifts as though it was all the way up. I haven't tried looking inside yet. I have a little bit of experience with electronics but not much. Well, anyway, thanks again. Maybe I'll try looking inside.
Great video but not what I was looking for, I have a problem with my Novation Mark 2 pitch wheel that sending information to the computer so it's automatically pitching weird, have anyone had this problem and know how to fix it ?.
Podría ayudarme? En mi 25sl mkii no aparece la opción de activar su memoria para su actualización, y no lo reconoce mi maquina. I can unlock the memory. this option is not in the mkii menu, the automap say please connect harware and the mkii say automap is offline. I have replaced the in usb piece so not work. coul be other harware pieze?
hi, im 1 of your biggest fan, i just wanna ask if you encounter error that appears on screen upon turning on my roland rs-70 is midi boot waiting... before that happen im editing patches and suddenly turns off and back again and it comes up the message "midi boot waiting..." i would be happy for your answer for this concern, tnx and more power.
USB connection is needed anyway to make this unit fully operable if one wants to edit parameters (other than default) what knobs and buttons are sending. PC editor is required for that purpose.
Gunars Gj From memory, there are additional settings on the unit that the PC editor doesn't have too, i can't remember what they are but i remember this when contacting Novation once.
there must be lots of communication on that USB port that I will never find out. but as long as it plays keys and there are some editable parameters then that should be fine. I have the arturia keylab for my PC work.
Hello, Nice video. I have a Novation SL61 MkII. And MIDI output port 1 started to sendi very strange messages when I'm using it. I tested it in way that connected the MIDI ou port 1 via MIDI to USB converter to my Gig Performer (VST Host program on my PC) where i can check all the incomming midi messages using the midi monito app. And press any key on my Novation, I see infinite set of various CC messages and constant triggering of Note On comming from Novation MIDI out port 1. Can you maybe give some advice. Do you may maybe have idea what is this about. Can I repair this somehow? thank you in advance.
Hello a friend had this same problem and I tested the midi messages which was also streaming constant information, I am sorry to say but I spent hours on it and I could not repair it.
Thanks for the vid! I have the same controller and it is really powerful midi-device. You can send pretty much any midi signal out of it. Moreover, you can create several templates for several synths & name controls as you want to make life easier. USB brings Automap functionality in case if you are working with DAWs, for example Ableton Live. You don't need to spend hours of configuring, just plug'n'play. But I have 2 problems with it - one fader is glitching & when I am hitting one drumpad, hitting also occurs on the second nearby. What might be the causes of that? Dirt collected during years of usage?
Hello Dmitry. the drumpads are piezo activated buttons (like you get in the back of digital watches) it may be that dirt has collected or maybe they are set too sensitive ?.
Hello! I will try to reduce sensitivity, maybe it will help, because as far as I remember, I have set it to maximum. Thank you! And one more thing. I will definitely open my device to clean it up, and I can send you photos of those missing components if you are interested.
Hi Dmitry. I think you just literally lift up those pads and you will see thin metal disks under them. thats my guess by the way. Thanks for the offer of the photo on the USB missing components that could be useful.
I have a Roland MS 1. Everything is fine but when I record and playback the sample on it it has a Crackle. When I got the sampler it had a sample on it and that sample plate back fine but when I go to sample a new recording there's a Crackle. Do you have any experience with that or know where they may be and how I can fix it. Thank you.
Hi, Im really sorry but I cannot guess what it wrong with your sampler, I have never had the MS-1 so cannot really think what to look for. my apologies.
markusfuller I understand. I'm going to post a video so everyone can see the issue. If I ever am brave enough I might open up the Roland and see what's going on inside. If I do I'll message you. Thank you for your response and your videos they're cool. Your set up is very nice and it's good to see you have everything you need to do what you love.
Yes let me know when you upload the video. ps have you tried the facebook page "vintage synth repair and mods" its full of useful people and resources.
Hello, my device is remote sl 37 which has an issue like this. If I open it up and it will work for just 10 seconds to play normally. After that, it will be dead or freeze. I shut it down and open it again, then it can not open again. After 10 minutes or later, it can be opened again, but the same thing for 10 seconds normally.
Hi, I have a midi controller with one fader that creates fake midi signals ( its like I was touching the fader up and down all the time) , but I don't. How can I fix this ? Thanks :)
Hello Yunis. sadly I have seen this many times with midi controllers especially when they are a few years old. I have tried replacing the potentiometer (fader) on one that was continuously sending midi messages as if i was moving it but even replacing the fader did not correct this and sadly I do not have an answer on why some of them do this. does your machine have a way to do a factory restore or software update ?.
If you need a pic of the main PCB I can take one for you. You can then ID the components and repair the USB side of things. Let me know and I'll open her up.
Thank You I really do appreciate the offer but this Midi controller has already been passed on to a friend long ago and is no longer in my possession. best wishes from Markus.
HI all as any one had a fault with the pitch and mod wheel it is all over the place when using vst instruments,s the last keyboard had the same fault all-so ,,,
I've got an SL25 that stopped working out of nowhere; just stopped lighting up when I plugged in the USB. I've got a new controller now but I don't want to throw it out; if you'd like to take a crack at fixing it, I'd mail it to you just for the cost of shipping. If you're interested, my email's on my site (mineralsound.com). -Daniel
markusfuller Yup my thought exactly. I see what you tried to do easing it down when unstarted talking again but it was just too long into the talking. Regardless still another great video. And I totally agree, sometimes trying too hard to fix something (especially when one doesnt need the broken features) can be more work then what its worth. In the words or Kenny Roger, "You gotta know when to holdem, know when to foldem" =) Youre definitely in my top 4 TH-camrs. Its kind of funny cause Im no musically inclined at all. I love the accent, your approach to repairs, and the knowledge.
A nice repair video. I really hope someone sends you the circuit diagram so you can make part 2, fixing the USB. ;)

Another question for you - It's just come to my attention one of the SH101 keys I fixed seems to retrigger every so often when I release the key - so on the down press and again on the release - atleast it is working but I am wondering if you have any idea what I could do to resolve it from doing that>
Cheers
Oh that is strange what you say about the SH-101. to be honest I have never seen that problem before. I would just get back in and maybe swop the rubber plungers from one end to the other and see if a different key does it. that way you can at least see if its a keyboard contact problem or not.
Great stuff as always Markus! Thanks for the video!
So the pots and sliders send out midi too (without re-setting anything in software over the broken USB)? GREAT find and fix for a fiver! Keep up the great work!
Hi mCKENIC , yes it seems you can program almost everything onboard without the usb. which is fine for me and great for £5
Hi Markuz, i always love to watch your videos and i learn a lot from them,
I have a Novation Remote 37SL Limited wich is basicly the same model only with 37 key and a costum Neon painted housing
THe Unit still works fine after replacing the USB input,
But since a few months the display on the right does not show all the lines (i don't think the display is broken because in some setting part of the lines show up.
Thx
Hi Telum. I am only ably to make videos with the items I own and I do not own the SL MK III . sorry about that.
Not sure if you are a piano player, but if you are - definitely look into Monoprice Stageright/Worlde's Blue Whale
would it be possible to repurpose the knobs and screens into another project?
very interesting video ! I have a problem with a knob on my novation launch control and I would like to replace it...how can I do ? any solutions ? (about references, schematics, how to test it,etc...)
Hi Manuel. I would firstly try and clean the knob then if that does not make it work look for a replacement, maybe email novation first for a replacement and if no luck the go to RS electronics or Mouser.
you got the MC a new friend to play with :B excellent!
Yes im really enjoying the MC505. great little box of tricks.
Hi markius.how i buy a mk2 sl valuome fader cap?i lost it😔.you can help me?!
Could you possibly direct me to any channels that talk about them?
shane bieda Hi novaion made a version of this without the keyboard.
markusfuller sorry, not the midi controller, but the synth
If you can test the pot as sometimes they get a little crusty over time and make intermittent contact with the carbon track. just a thought.
You can do it on the device itself too
Hello. you can change many of the parameters on the unit itself.
hm... nice to hear that. I've done this only via usb.
Awesome job! Thanks for sharing this.
Thank You Thomas.
Hello,
Nice video.
@@markusfuller Wow... Thank You very much for quick response.
I have contaced Novation technical support. Lets see what they will say.
Thanks for making videos for us
Thank You :-)
I'd find it interesting to tag along to a car boot sale with you :)
5am sunday mornings ?.
Hi Markus, I have sent you photo of components on email.
Thank You Dmitry.
Yes let me know when you upload the video. ps have you tried the facebook page "vintage synth repair and mods" its full of useful people and resources.
markusfuller great idea. I going to ad them. Hopefully someone with have some info.
does it breakes easly? Thanks
Hi I do not know how you would repair as I have never seen that problem before so do not have a fix. my apologies.
@@markusfuller thank you
Hi, I have a midi controller with one fader that creates fake midi signals ( its like I was touching the fader up and down all the time) , but I don't.
@@markusfuller oh thats a good idea, im gonna try. Thank u :)
1:35 and I bet this little thingy sucks up a "lot" more juice then the keylab49
how huge is the empty space inside... the good place for a synth brain :)
And I was happy enough when I got my apple pwrunit working with pliers and glue gun ;)
HI all as any one had a fault with the pitch and mod wheel it is all over the place when using vst instruments,s
the last keyboard had the same fault all-so ,,,
again... too bad we live so far away!
My sl mk2 61 is dead through usb
Do you have a Reddit account?
Hello Robert. I only signed up on reddit a few weeks ago and am still trying to find time to check it out.
Cool, nice to know that's the real you over there.
Another car boot addict ? : ) btw novation power on switch design is a total mistake : )
-Daniel
Love the video as always. However the background music when ur talking is very distracting for me. Otherwise another great video!
Sorry Jay. I do agree with you, I should only use it for the fast forward parts really.
markusfuller Yup my thought exactly.
