Maybe you mention it later in the video but you can re-calibrate the joystick on the x-station. Alone it is unlikely to fix the issue but may be necessary after completing the repairs you've outlined. *also, I've never seen the red felt before, did you add that?
Thinking about it, I don’t think I have ever calibrated my joystick! The XY pad yes, but not the joystick. I’m intrigued to see if it can be calibrated to need less movement than ordinarily so!
Thank you, worked for my Novation 61SL MK II as well. Took me like 2 hours, the only pot cleaning thing I had was alcohol hand sanitizer so will probably have to redo this process in the near future. I did have sewing machine oil and the "warble" effect is gone, so a success for now... minus the battlescars I left with the soldering pen.
This worked for me. I just took the part out with out DE soldering the wires and opened the top. Sprayed CRC contact cleaner and worked the joystick back and fourth. Easy fix. Thanks for the video
Good to know! Mine has started todo this jumpy data issue what calibration cannot fix. So I guess it's time to open up (again this old friend and fix the pitch/mod joystick. :)
Thanks for this. Halfway through disassembly, I got stuck on one step that should have been obvious (removing the joystick dome). Video cleared that up (it's a pull), with an audible "duh" from me. Anyways, Novation 61SL joystick working properly again.

On my 49SL MkII I had similar problems (unwanted pitchwheel and modwheel data). Your method, however, didn't work. What solved the problem in my case was just disconnecting that bloody xy pad (below PWh & MWh) from the mainboard. No soldering required! I didn't use that x/y gimmick anyway btw.
This worked great for my pitchbend problem where it wouldn't center back correctly. I was even able to get the cleaner in without desoldering the wires. Unfortunately now my modwheel sticks at around 3 or 4 instead of 0 unless i force it down or engage the spring-loaded feature which i usually don't use.
That’s odd... the mod and pitch are changed via potentiometers so rather than the mod one being cleaned, it may need adjusting perhaps? I know they either screw or bolt in... but without rewatching my own video on the job I’ve done just once I can’t give much more advice than that 😅
@@JDStoneCreations ah thanks it's cool. I think it may be something mechanical where I may not have put it back together properly. The first time i reassembled it I must have put the plastic dome back on 180º flipped because it was scraping the top part of the case when i moved it.
Hey, JDStone I have similar problem, and called Novation to buy replacement for those potentiometers (Piher Spain). I managed to Calibrate the joystick, but after a few twitches it starts the pitch\mod data starts wobbling again not returning to 0 or 128 (central pitch). Could you name the cleaning products again please, so I can buy a can of it? Many thanks!
@@JDStoneCreations I just ordered DP-40 electrical cleaner. There was a Servisol 10 also in the list, but nevermind. Many thanks! Let's see if it will help.
Allergic to the electronic inside of gear...even I dare to do this ! Thanks ! My SL Mk2 joystick needs a fix...sending out unwanted midi data and not performing very well....Hope I can fix it....
Hi! I have a problem of my X-station freezing up after 5 minutes of use. Screen stays on , audio continues working but all of the controls including the keybed seize working. Anyone seen this same behaviour? Could it be that there,s an internal battery dead or something? Best regards!
I have just received an x-station 25 that I believe took a bit of a bang in the mail. Luckily it isn't super damaged but it is having problems with the screen and a few other LEDs turning off somewhat randomly when messing with controls in the upper left side of the unit. A little whack brings the lights back on. Can't find a service manual anywhere but my guess is perhaps that big ribbon cable has come a bit loose? Haven't opened her up yet but perhaps you have some insight before I begin (I don't have a great deal of electronics experience...) Cheers, R.
RDijt be gentle, check connections, search for circuit board damage, and check it isnt just the power socket or usb socket that just need soldering more solidly on.
Thanks for this video! Mine has been collecting dust (quite literally unfortunately) and some of the pots are wonky. Do you have any tips for cleaning them? The knobs feel like they're on pretty good, will they pull off and not break with enough force?
Get it cleaned and used! Cleaning pots will need some "Switch Cleaner" or "Switch cleaning lubricant". No point me advising which brand as so many make it! Basically any electrical cleaner, rotate the pots lots and keep using them, they'll come back to life once the cleaner works its magic. As for removing the knobs in the first place, get a piece of string that is thin enough to wrap around underneath the knob just once and then pull vertically upwards. Careful though as any sideways movement can damage the pot and pull too hard and the knob goes flying!
Hello, I bought a Sl MKii and I'm testing it until I can evaluate the product and release payment to the seller. however, he had a problem with the joystick. how likely is it to be resolved with some cleanup? I confess that I'm afraid to buy and the problem gets worse.
Well, I cleaned mine about when this video was released and it still works. It largely depends on how well you clean it and if cleaning it is the problem in the first place... So I cannot confidently answer your question without having the keyboard in front of me!
Sorry, but I couldn't understand you around the time you started messing with the joystick. Speak clearly & slow please. The basic idea is "you are spraying it with contact cleaner." Correct?

Thanks, this worked great on an old Xio Synth 25. Pitch bend is now smooth instead of jumping around max/min.
Perfect! Love to hear an old synth get a new lease of life.
Thank you sir. This resolved the pitch bend issue with my 61SL MK II.
4 months later and the joystick is still working good as new. 👍
