Speaking of the water, my friend in elementary school had a broken TV that for some reason showed certain blues as greens. So everything was normal, but the oceans, lakes, ponds, fludd’s tank? All green. He tried to convince us OUR TVs were broken because “Shadow Mario polluted the water”
Humn, I wonder what would cause that I wonder. Woulda been an LCD TV.. seems unlikely that all the blue lights would go out, maybe they had some issue that caused the blue to be dimmer than red and green. I know that blue in general is a hard colour to display as well as other coloured lighting so I could see that being the case maybe? Interesting.
Something else to mention: in the PAL/SM3DAS version, change the language to Italian, enter Episode 8, and then read the sign next to Bar Gelato. This softlocks the game.
A little detail you missed about the cash register in the Gelato Bar. If you go underneath it and jump it’ll spawn a bunch of coins. Very helpful for the 100 coins shine and also a really cool reference to the classic Mario games
Another great episode! One thing I'd like to point out is this is the only stage that has no goop or story reason to go there. Pinna Park has no goop either, but it has Bowser Jr. and cutscenes and such. But Gelato Beach has literally no reason for Mario to visit since he's supposed to be cleaning up the goop, yet there is none.
I feel so validated hearing other people did fake LP's for fun as a kid too. I love these videos by the way, easily my favorite videos on this game now. I'm excited for more in the future!
It was a bit too early for LPs to really be a thing when I played this game, but I sure did talk to myself a lot anyway as a child, which I feel counts. Lol
"Sandbomb Baseshit" sounds like one of those really confused and poorly translated Spongebob bootlegs. I mean it's closer than "Tooly I am King" at least!
This series is quickly becoming one of my favorites, everything is top notch: the structure, the humor, the editing, all the lore and additional information you give about each level and above all, your choice of music. Well done. With that said, Gelato beach has got to be my favorite level in the game and one of my favorite spots in the entire Mario universe. In contrast with the levels in the other Mario games, which you want to complete as fast as you can before moving on, Sunshine levels have that special charm which makes you want to stay and explore everything. There are just so many things to see and try, and so many people to talk to. As a kid, I spent hours upon hours just chilling in Gelato beach, running in the sand, blasting through the water with the turbo nozzle, enjoying the view from the top of the sand tower or the highest pole in the area...
The water/reflections aren't actually mip-mapping related. Mip-mapping is seen more in increasingly far away textures. It primarily prevents moiré patterns in semi-uniformly tiled things like ground textures or ocean ripple displacement maps while also potentially being used as an optimization by not rendering high quality textures at large distances. The way they do the reflections is by having another camera render the scene from a different angle (relative to the main camera and the reflective surface) and then that camera's perspective is saved to an alternative image buffer, from there, it can mask out the parts of the regular camera view that are to be reflection and copy the alt buffer data to them. Earlier/most games don't opt for rendering a whole second view because they can barely hit the target framerate with everything rendering once, let alone twice. (Also, side note, there's a few different types of reflections in the game that all work slightly differently and then there's similar but different things like the heat waves.) (PS Love the video)
Though mipmapping is used for the texturing of the surface of the water and is why the patterns are harder to notice from close up, because nearer water has a different texture than the further water. Typically mipmapping is used to save on processing power by reducing texture resolution of the same texture further from the camera, but here it was used to also help create the impressive water effects by using completely different textures at different distances. IIRC the nearest two mipmap levels are actually blank textures so you can see Mario through the water without the effect of the sun's glare reflecting off the water obstructing your view Edit: I misremembered, the furthest two are blank, the nearest is darker though than the further out layers so that it is easier to see Mario. Here is the video I used as reference th-cam.com/video/Ipsd6rYj6Mk/w-d-xo.html
Exactly that! just wanted to add that through somewhat complex math the image buffer gets mapped as a texture to a surface! Also the second Camera can omit certain objects to save on computational time and only one reflection gets rendered at a time. (notice how only one mirror seem to show the clouds)
Random fun fact I learned as a kid with the Wiggler level, if you ground pound them on the third stage then quickly press Z to bring up the map, the music which was of course, slowly getting faster with each stage gets STUPIDLY fast to ridiculous levels, then if you were quick enough to exit the map then open it again, the music would change to a hilariously slow pitch. Just a random fact that gave me a lot of joy. Things were always hilarious when sped up as a kid.
My headcanon is that the Sand Bird brings sand to newly formed islands to help them get bigger, and that Isle Delphino was created by it and Corona Mountain.
This is an awesome series and i binged all of it about a week ago, so stoked for a new installment. Thanks for putting in the work to do each area justice!
That callback to dunkey racing Koopa the Quick in his SM64 video hahahahahaha. Love this video and this series so much. Finally I can get all those damn blue coins!
I found this on accident, but I adore this series and this channel! Sometimes it feels like it's a rarity for people to actually talk about the things the love, instead of what they hate. You do such an intimate delve into the specifics of each level that it's hard not to fall in love with the game a little. Excellent work!
I'm quick to watch these videos, but today feels a bit more special to know this one was posted on my birthday. I love this series as SMS is a favorite childhood game of mine, and I really think you do a great job of covering things like this. You've answered so many of the questions I had as a kid when I'd be wandering around the maps and trying to make the most out of the game. Thanks for making these videos and keep up the good work. 🎉
Mario Sunshine remains my favorite Mario game to date! I always felt like it was unfairly hated on. The unique charm of a tropical island paired with the somewhat chaotic overtones of the bosses and enemies makes this a remarkable game. I seriously have to thank you for breaking down these levels and going into such detail! I also watched an 'LP' of this game when I was younger. Chuggaconroy, in fact! He's who inspired me to get the game, and I've loved it dearly ever since! This was an amazing video Phoenix! Keep it up! I'll be sure to watch all the future ones!
This might be my favorite series on Super Mario Sunshine ever - your sense of humor is amazing. Can't wait to see the next one (and I hope your favorite level is Sirena Beach, but I don't want to spoil it...) 👀
I forgot to subscribe after watching all your previous videos and when this showed up in my recommended I yelled "YOU!" aloud as I clicked the video, so uh, keep up the good work.
Idk if you knew this, but figured I'd bring it up since you didn't: if you go to the map screen with Z after the wiggler boss fight while the boss music is winding down but before the Shine appears, you can hear a slowed down version of the boss music playing while looking at the map. But then, if you get out of the map screen and go back in quickly enough, you can hear a much faster version. Why it works like that, I don't know, and this is the only boss in the game where that happens. But it's a cool little trick that I've always liked to do anytime I go back to this game (especially after I learned about it from research)! Anyway, awesome video! Looking forward to more!
Gosh man, I cant articulate just how happy this makes me. Haven't played this game in i dont know how many years and i found these gems recently. They have been such a joy to go through.
One thing you haven’t mentioned yet that I love about the game is how Delfino Plaza, Bianco Hills, Rico Harbor, and Gelato Beach all share the same main melody (slightly embellished for each of their styles). This follows the “tradition” set by Mario World and Mario 64 as well
i think this level was my favorite as a kid, i would just hang out in this stage and wander around. i really liked the area near the bar for some reason lol
I've never stopped to think about how good the reflections in this game look, those tilting mirrors are black magic what the actual F were Nintendo devs cooking in 2002. I swear they have the greatest dev techniques hidden in their vault and no one can get on that level historically. Reminds me of that wonderful video breaking down Galaxy's gravity mechanic on spherical planets. So genius yet so "simple"...
You have become my favorite TH-camr covering this game along with scykoh for the impeccable positive vibes, but you get a bonus point for awesome humor. That's a very high standard for me, i love this game and having such positive coverage of it keeps it in my heart. I will come back to rewatch these videos every year or so as I do with scykohs videos.
Great video! Didn't know about some of these 100 coin locations or tricks, and found the joke at the start pretty amusing too. Will add one thing though... it's possible to defeat all the Cataquacks on the top level by luring them off to the lower one, clearing both parts of the map. Not very useful, but I used it for the Watermelon Festival a few times.
Something annoying about the 3D All-Stars release is that one of the coins that spawn from the Sand Cabana cash register is inaccessible, so the max coin score is one less than in GC
I think what i was most amazed by this video, was finding out about the detail of the Dolphin island writing. Not only its made to be a actual language, BUT they even took extra care to localize some of the text between the japanese and english version. Respect to that
Started another playthrough of Sunshine when I started watching these but got sad when I realized they only come out like once a month so I am now dedicated to playing each world as this series is released.
OH another upload! You're breakdowns bring me back to when I first found Particular Mushroom, so these are VERY welcome. Thank you, can't wait to see you breakdown Sirena Beach at some point. ALSO double A+ for the Sly breakdowns too, those were a nice surprise. =3
5:20 Fun fact about reflections... During the first two episodes of Bianco Hills, if you go to the area where Mario is standing at this moment in the video, you'll notice something "stuck" to the side of the windmill tower...but only in the reflection. It looks to be a giant goop-covered piranha head. That's because that's the invisible object that generates the rolling piranha heads during those episodes; that's where they spawn from. The object is invisible, but apparently it still shows up in the lake's reflection.
subscribed. i love this game, it's been a hyper fixation recently after remembering it as a kid. hearing how well it's held up, and how well the game is programmed, makes me genuinely happy. thank you for covering it. :)
Love this series. It definitely feels like a continuation of the Particular Mushroom videos while also having its own vibe and personality. You’re doing great work 🫡
Omg I’ve been binging through this series and never realized you were the same person who found out about the dolphic alphabet! You’ve even gotten me doing my own “slow down and smell the roses” type of playthrough of sunshine. Well… besides getting (almost) all of the Plaza shines I could before peach gets kidnapped (the one bell shrine and lighthouse being way too hard for me). Gotta feed the inner glitch gremlin something
This game was my entire childhood, i don't know how many hours i racked up on it, so this series is seriously well appreciated. I don't think ive played it in at least 10 years but it's crazy how i still vividly remember all of this.
When I first played the second level, I spent ages trying to defeat the set of three ducks. I was very confused after beating them that I didn't get the shine. It was then I realized I beat the hardest part if the challenge first.
I've loved this series so much, i cannot wait for more! I have to say one thing and its important. Your voice was made for this and these videos. Idk why i love your voice so much its just perfect and I'm not sure how else to put it. Great job!
I love this series. It's very complete, you talk about a lot of aspects of the game and I like your sense of humor. I was deeply impacted by this game as a kid and never played it since. I've watched tons of detailed videos about Mario 64 but this is the first time I come across something like this for Sunshine. I'm looking forward to the other levels!
I had to take a double-take at 15:58 'cause it sounded soooo closely similar to Arin's reaction during the Game Grumps' playthrough of the game a decade ago.
ill say, growing up with this game I just messed around into a lot of this knowledge. but il piantissimo getting faster the more you race him is NOT something i knew. or at least cared to notice. so, wow
Really been loving these videos since I first saw your Noki Bay one, I'm going back to back cos they're each so great! Finding out lots about this game I love and replay every year. The anecdote about your dad was fun too 😂 keep em comin! ❤
13:37 The thing that differs Gelato from your typical milk-based ice cream, is the addition of gelatin. This gives the ice cream a more smooth texture, and help it keep it's shape while melting.
Red Cataquacks were a real pain during the whole watermelon caravan quest; first completed it by swallowing my impatience and booby trapping all of them with the Dune Buds
Woo! Someone else that loves the watermeleon festival~! ...which is ironic, 'cause I don't like eating watermeleons-- The mission's just a massive vibe to me
Another use for mipmapping is that it's basically baked in anti-aliasing, that's why I always get miffed when a minecraft texture pack or mod breaks it completely.
@@Cute___E It's probably with how Minecraft handles mipmaps specifically. If it fails to scale a single texture, it freaks out and turns off mipmapping entirely.
This is such a fun series. Just one small thing it would be really fun if you talked more about the npcs because most of their dialogs keep changing so its one more part of the impression of Sunshine
If you get all 120 shines, you get a picture of il piantissmo finding the magic paintbrush. My theory, which for some reason I can't find anyone else sharing or believing, is that shadow mario actually is il piantissmo, and the photo of him finding the paintbrush is not in the present, but the past. The theory requires some mental gymnastics where il piantissmo is in cahoots with Bowser Junior and Junior has him do the dirty work. But it's too coincidental to be ignored, and yet everyone does ignore it.
Gelato Beach is the personal favourite of mine also, it perfectly captures the mission statement of a tropical paradise, and is chock full of interesting, exotic, mystic and chill locations.
Every copy of Mario Sunshine is personalised
I just imagined Shadow Mario pouring green ink into the water like a captain planet villain.
@@freddywilliams9837 muahahaha i will kill mario with the power of green
That's basically the endgame of Super Paper Mario so that checks out.
Humn, I wonder what would cause that I wonder.

I know that blue in general is a hard colour to display as well as other coloured lighting so I could see that being the case maybe? Interesting.
The sunglasses guy having a different shirt in each level is such an insignificant detail but I love that they included it.

The level does have a different feeling compared to most and the lack of goop contributes to that subconsciously I suppose!
Its almost like Mario gets a level thats a vacation, other than the sandbird.....
I feel so validated hearing other people did fake LP's for fun as a kid too.

Goddamnit your breakneck humor and wit on my most beloved childhood game ❤❤ truly a euphoric video series sir
Woo! Someone else that loves the watermeleon festival~!
...which is ironic, 'cause I don't like eating watermeleons-- The mission's just a massive vibe to me
under rated channel for the il piantissimo race
Awesome series! Really enjoying the depth you cover while still keeping a great pace!
14:53 🤣🤣🤣🤣 That whole bit is beautiful AND awesome ❤️
Another use for mipmapping is that it's basically baked in anti-aliasing, that's why I always get miffed when a minecraft texture pack or mod breaks it completely.
How does it break it, exactly?
@@Cute___E It's probably with how Minecraft handles mipmaps specifically. If it fails to scale a single texture, it freaks out and turns off mipmapping entirely.
This is such a fun series. Just one small thing it would be really fun if you talked more about the npcs because most of their dialogs keep changing so its one more part of the impression of Sunshine
Another banger. Can't wait to see your channel blow up. :)
The humor in these videos are unmatched I’m so happy the algorithm brought me here😂
Liked and Subbed! Can’t wait to see Pianta Village and Sirena Beach! That Hotel must be holding loads of secrets! 😄
14:47 I was not expecting a +200 bit like that in one of these at all; I laughed out loud
Your script writing is so excellent
At the end I just wanted to see Mario actually land on the beach as he meteors his way down.
Thanks for the trip down memory lane with this series
love this series! Keep up the good work :)
i love this series, i would love to see you do a series just like this on Twilight princess (my fav zelda of all time)
Yea, not to mention TP and other LoZ games have some mystifyingly interesting locations with lore shrouded in mystery
This is the best episode in the series. Hands down.
A true Magnum Opus.
Been waiting for this video for a couple weeks!!
Yoo!! Shoutouts to the dark cloud 2 music at the end! I would kill for a Game Break Down on that game.
This series is incredible! I would love for you to continue this after sunshine with galaxy
That sand sprint bit was AMAZING!!😂
Gelato Beach is the personal favourite of mine also, it perfectly captures the mission statement of a tropical paradise, and is chock full of interesting, exotic, mystic and chill locations.
Ur really funny, I’m really enjoying this series, nice one man! Subscribed
These episodes of Mario Sunshine have earned you a sub from me !
