The part where the default dialogue for errors is "I want to eat freshly cooked white rice" and "I didn't notice it was so bright outside" kind of hits home for me as a programmer lol. Eating just enough simple food to get by, letting the sun come and go like nothing...very relatable for when you're deep in a project. I can't help but think these are messages from Nintendo developers during a serious crunch.
Something that stands out to me about Noki Bay is actually the Noki themselves. While the Piantas went on to appear in several other Mario games, the Noki pretty much stayed on Isle Delfino. It's especially odd since their design is very Mario, this franchise loves creatures that have shells.
@@aishutoon4553I love how the game with Noki, Kremlings, and Baby DK is a baseball game. Like how the Square Mario Sports games have their odd birds, and the Olympic Games have their notoriously famous characters. And the old golf and tennis had total average joes. Live for the variety!
I just wanna say that this is my favorite video series on TH-cam and I'm so happy it's still going EVEN if we're drawing closer and closer to its conclusion. You're dope dude.
Something else about the eel: they're half male and half female. One pair of eyes has eyebrows and the other has eyelashes, and the sound it makes when you clean a tooth is different depending on which side the tooth is on!
Another interesting detail about Ely-Mouth is its innards, as it not only has its esophagus modelled (as seen at 30:49), but a small stomach as well. Mario can never get low enough into the mouth to see the stomach, so it goes unseen. Makes me wonder if they had more planned for the swallowing attack.
Fun fact: Eely Mouth has a fully modeled stomach, leading some people to believe that maybe the boss fight was originally going to involve Mario intentionally being eaten and fight it from the inside.
Seriously, how can 50 minutes go by so fast? This series has been a joy to watch so far. I don't know if it's my copy of Sunshine showing its age, but that particular blue coin ALWAYS crashes the game when I collect it...
These videos remind me of a particular mushroom. Damn do I miss his videos. You're essentially picking up his mantle, which is beautiful, even if it's unintentional.
Man Noki Bay is my favourite Sumshine zone by far. The feeling of exploring ancient ruins in a gorgeous place, the deep sea area, the sense of progression by seeing the water get clean, just discovering how to enter felt so good as a kid. All accompanied by that amazing theme. It all felt so magic. Thank you again for your videos, i really love them.
I can’t believe we’re only two or three episodes away from this series ending already! I’m gonna miss these break downs of Super Mario Sunshine when it’s over, but I’ll always enjoy rewatching them! Like Sunshine, these videos are very calming and help put my mind at ease in otherwise difficult times, so I just want to say thanks as a relatively new subscriber!
It’s funny to find that Noki Bay was one of the most rushed worlds since it was actually always my favorite. It’s so atmospheric & beautiful, and I love that soundtrack. All the underwater stuff and history really captured my young imagination.
I know Sunshine was rushed, but I still love it. There’s still so much detail and charm, in spite of how glitchy and somewhat unfinished it is. Noki Bay is interesting: it’s got a lot of infamous and difficult levels, but I like the causal but mysterious vibe.
Am I the only one who thinks that Sunshine feels incredibly well polished? I disagree with the notion that it's not. And sure, if you look really hard, you'll find glitches - but that's true for every game ever. I truly believe that the average player never encounters a glitch while playing. When I think of "well polished game", Sunshine comes to mind. And it's not even one of my favorite games or anything. ...except for Bowser and Bowser Jr's voice acting. It's straight up terrible.
This even still is my favorite worlds. Being taken away from my GameCube to go to real beaches in Rhode Island. This tropical OST lived in my head rent free and stimulated my senses awakening my sense of adventure growing up. I really miss my childhood
Very impressed with your attention to detail once again. The fact that the nozzle in the bottle uses bubbles, and that for whatever reason NPC refer to FLUDD by its name in only this level? Mind blown! You fully deserve to be credited on Cutting Room Floor!
I feel so thankful stumbling upon your hidden language cypher video because this series has been some of my favorite Mario content in a very long time. Keep it up dude, I look forward to every upload.
26:01 Ah yes, the Noki Nozzle, or as it’s generally referred to in the speedrunning community, the Super-Hover Nozzle. I’ve seen a lot of talk about it before, but it’s a testament to your thoroughness that you’re the first to show that it uses BUBBLES. I also wouldn’t consider it the hover either, as it operates completely differently, and is totally required to get all blue coins, which is why I allowed it in a hoverless challenge (very tricky in some spot, though no more so than Corona). 32:30 That’s a glitch; it only happens when the victory cutscene plays while you’re in the damage animation, and is probably based on normally taking damage, which changes the meter’s color, though it doesn’t do that it water…
I always love your Sunshine videos, but Wave Race: Blue Storm is really good! You just have to play it and trust me. The weather mechanic in the game is very cool!
I’m so glad you brought up the blue coin crashing because my first time I decided to 100% this game in 2016, that blue coin was the bane of my existence.
Droooooooooooooool, my favourite level! It's so freaking PRETTY! You know the spot right at the top where you find the yellow bird/ I will climb up there and just chill with the vibes. Not to mention the underwater area when the music is chill, not when the eel is there. Ugh, SO much love for this level. Except for those fist bastards that punch you off the cliffs. HATE.
I think what you're hearing with this level's music is the fact that I don't hear what I like to call the "Sunshine motif" being in the song at all, as opposed to songs like Ricco Harbour or Delfino Plaza where they're remixes of one another. And I agree that not having that leitmotif does make this track stand out a lot.
Man I could talk on and on and on about Sunshine and it's development, what changed, what's leftover, and how fascinating I find it and dream of getting an early version. I will just say though I made a huge (albeit now kind of outdated) iceberg on Sunshine to express it and gmdblue made a decent video on it. I recommend it and reading my pinned comment there for everything. I'd love to see YOU cover it even. I've said it before but I can't stress enough to read tcrf on Sunshine. Also someone is currently making a really good looking beta recreation that will run on console. I feel this way about so many GameCube games it's a shame how it turned out but so fascinating at the same time. This, Mansion, Star Fox Adventures, Melee. I just got obsessed with the idea of the "What if melee was the first smash" video and have been thinking of my own take on it lol. Anyway I love the vibes of noki bay. It has one of the best hidden shines too. Shoutouts to the funny pink cheep cheeps and eely mouth.
I don't understand how these get less than 100k views. The audio quality is perfect, and I've seen channels with a million subscribers have inferior writing and editing.
I have been going thru an ultimately small but stressful period in life and this game is so nostalgic to me. I love the attitude you approach these videos with and the depth of the Mario Sunshine content helps my mood lmao🎉
I would be so curious to learn what was planned originally for Nokia Bay. What was meant to be here instead of the Squid Boss? A Golem maybe? Who knows! Scrapped features, npc, concept art... I would love to see that.
A less finished Sunshine could have had a Sonic 06 effect on the Mario brand and instead of Galaxy he gets New Soup games from Wii to today, unless the Wii inspires them anyway. Sunshine has its drawbacks, but it’s fun and clever, getting an acceptable time in the GCN’s life not to be stuck right at the end before Wii was on every person’s mind. I think library usually beats launch in terms of upkeep on a system, and the GCN competitors were more than capable of delivering worthwhile content to their homes. All the I’ll want 3 games people usually Mario 3D, Zelda 3D, Mario Kart, and Smash being system sellers for generations of families bought a while after a launch. Maybe even a version with a decent deal in later years.
I look forward to this every single month. Being a huge Mario Sunshine fan! This is perfect! Also, you missed one secret in Noki Bay. When doing the Eel mission in one of the eels eyes you can actually see the beta of Ricco Harbor. You just need to swim up to the eel’s and tilt the camera slightly around the eyes of the eel, it’s kinda tough to get just right but if you do you can see the image. I have tried this in both the original and 3D All Stars and it’s still there
I love this cross between video essay and let's play. Separating the game into sizable chunks for basically a walk-through with tidbits of development and design and game appreciation just does so well
I find it interesting how despite sunshine’s criticism, aspects of it remain in later mario games. Piantas, bowser jr and his brush, petey piranha, the music and so much more
I feel like I've learnt a lot about Sunshine I didn't know or realize before. Like the floating things in the water being the houses of the Noki residents, not something I had ever noticed throughout my many playthroughs.
This series has become one of my favourites. You turned Noki Bay, one of my least favourite levels, and turned it into one of my favourites in a span of 50 minutes.
Fantastic work! Thank you for making this series! I don't have a lot of words for how cool it is to get another perspective on this very pretty and tropical game, but I appreciate each video!
I'm amazed you released this so quickly after the previous one despite these videos being so long and well edited. Amazing work! I'm not the biggest fan of Sunshine since I value the level of polish and intentional level design most other Mario games are known for but the vibes in this game are always immaculate and Noki Bay is the absolute peak for this game, imo.
I found this series from a random TH-cam recommendation, but it's been stellar to see such a deep dive into such a good game. Side note, I loved the 2 second clip of the Radiance theme when showing Piantas complaining about the darkness!
Hopping in here to say I love this series sm! Sunshine is one of my favorite games, and seeing all these niche and rarely talked about aspects of the game is amazing. So happy this popped up on my recommended!
This series is amazing. Easily the greatest sunshine “let’s play” there’s ever been. It covers so much stuff I knew and didn’t know, and shows off all the fun jank/glitches I remember finding when I first played the game.
Yes! I was looking forward to a new episode of one of my favorite comfy and nostalgic video essays! Once you're done with Sunshine, what about tackling Galaxy or 64 next? :D
I think Noki Bay's secluded nature is supposed to represent a real locale phenomenon in tourist destinations. The intentionally hidden tourist hot spots. Places that could make a lot of money for the locals, but is not talked about with tourists to preserve it in some manner(Sacred land, delicate ecosystem, getaway spot kept as locals only, etc.) A reoccurring theme of Noki Bay is secrecy. Two references, to secret levels of the previous game, the hidden wall climb, all the booby traps, the hidden Noki Depths, so many blue coins, and probably a few things I missed mentioning too. Noki Bay definitely feels the least polished of the seven areas, but its theming also makes that feel acceptable and intentional.
Oh man. So much makes sense now. I had no idea this level was truly rushed, but it even felt unfinished as a kid. The placement of Monty Mole was so frustrating and the whole level felt like a massive jump in difficulty compared to the rest of the game.
So glad this video came up in my recommendations. This era of gaming is special to me, and seeing all these details I’ve never seen before makes me happy. Instant subscribe.
Your tone is so positive and optimistic Phoenix. It makes me appreciate and love this game more than I did and it’s already one of my favorite games. I’m excited to more breakdowns with this level of care and appreciation
This video is a masterpiece! This series is extremely important, because I love Sunshine and being immersed in it, but there's not much content online about the Sunshine world. I've recently gotten into semi-casually speedrunning this game so that I can play it as many times as I want! I don't even care if my runs are super slow compared to the pros; having that reason to practice and play the game more is all the reward i need. There's only two things I would add to this video: 1. The dive suit isn't as clunky as people think, because you can turn MUCH sharper if you go into first person mode, turn, then go back to normal view. 2. There is kind of a purpose for the boat in Noki Bay. I think it's to show you what it's like to control it, so that you have a chance of being prepared for Corona Mountain. Imagine how cool it'd feel in a first playthrough if you messed around with that boat for a while, (kinda like i messed around with the swing in Gelato), and then got to use that knowledge when it mattered the most. There's even a 3rd party guide book from back in the day that advises to go practice with the Noki Bay boat before taking on Corona Mountain.
This is one of my favourite gaming levels. I used to replay this level all the time just for the atmosphere and music, exploring all the little crevices and jumping around the ropes.
I found your channel through this series and immediately loved it. Sunshine is my favourite game of all time and a video series like this is an absolute dream come true. Keep up the great work man!
Have you put much thought on if you're doing a 3rd game in this series? I'd love to see you do Sa2 personally. You're so thorough with your dissection of this game, I'd love to see it in more of my favorites
I was just thinking yesterday "there was a shorter break in between the last two videos than the last video and this one, noki bay MUST be a long video" boy how happy I am to be right
I have had no previous interest in Super Mario Sunshine, especially not a breakdown on individual levels, but you are so good at making this content interesting it has my attention. I hope you continue to make content and put this type of effort into other games!
I'm so glad to have found this series. SMS was my favorite game growing up, and the secrets you've shown throughout these vids gives me a deeper appreciation for the game.
I almost never comment on videos, but i just wanted to tell you how genuinely amazing these videos are. They're so well written and beautifully narrated. I look forward to each one. Thanks for making them :))
This is my favorite level in the game! Every episode of this series has been a great time to watch, learning many new things about Sunshine while also being entertaining. Keep up the great work!
Been absolutely loving this series! I'm also happy seeing your name in TCF, the language video is how I found out about your channel in the first place! Keep up the great work!
Man, there are A LOT of places you can glitch through that I never knew about! In fact, I never considered it possible to bring Gooper Blooper into the Noki Tomb. YAY for more glitches!
38:50 yeah when I was a kid I didn't use walljumps to get up there, even though the level teaches you at the start... i jumped on the nails and spinjump up to the next level. Very tricky. Very satisfying.
geez okay fine guess i won't go to bed just yet. I found your videos earlier this week and have binged everything you've made. I love your stuff. Please never stop doing what you do!
I really like that Noki Bay is the only area on the northern shore of the island. Really makes it feel like a hidden, tucked away place far removed from the rest of the areas
The blue coin walkthrough with the diagrams reminds me of old shows on G4 I used to watch as a kid. It was very professionally done and pretty nostalgic for me, I quite enjoyed it!
I always considered Noki Bay my least favorite area in the game and I hated the eel fight as a kid. But I appreciate it now so much more in the context of Sunshine. And this video does it so much justice. This series just keeps on giving. I don't want it to end.
What a video to start my day! You're very thorough. I never saw any boxing gloves pointing upwards in this level; I thought all the traps pointed sideways
I love this series! It really hits my GameCube nostalgia itch with some memorable GC music in the background (starting off with Impact Site ❤) into a deep dive into one of my favorite levels of my favorite games
Some minor corrections and clarifications because I am a massive SMS fan: 3:04 You can actually see the very top of Noki Bay from Pianta Village; Specifically the spot where Gooper Blooper is fought. 4:10 Pretty sure the Noki Elder's "swirly eyes" are just stylisation with the glasses. 15:10 While I do agree it doesn't control the best, I do think it's worth noting that it actually gets pushed surprisingly realistically by FLUDD's water. For more information, viewers, I'd recommend viewing Particular Mushroom's Tricks, Secrets, Glitches & More in Noki Bay in Super Mario Sunshine, because I can't be bothered to fully explain it. 25:40 Well, it's a bit more complicated than that. Rather SMS uses a lot of stretched bubble sprites facing the camera to represent FLUDD's water (Plus the water that falls out of water barrels). It appears that when this nozzle variation's water jet segments come in contact with a ceiling, their code freaks out a bit and just defaults to staying in place with no stretched-ness. 32:31 Extremely minor thing, but due to Eely-Mouth's appearance, it's likely that they're actually two heads making up the same body, with one having a more masculine appearance (read:eyebrows), while the other having more a feminine one. 34:19 You can actually clip out of bounds in Noki Bay without the rocket nozzle I don't exactly remember how. I swear I once got under the water barrier without one though, and I can say that I probably didn't have the Rocket Nozzle because I cannot do Rocket Storage for the life of me. I think I might've been using the small water pools seen at41:32, because as the clip demonstrates, that area has some really faulty terrain. 37:33 I actually do care, that's quite fascinating.
*there are actually two one ups in the secret level. I JUST played it and hit every nail. The second (or first arguably) is right near the start after the rotating platforms on the far side
39:30 I always get this one just fine by repeatedly jumping out of the water and then instantly belly flopping for quick forward speed. And I'm pretty sure you can also move the mud boat out to sea to spray the graffiti circle from even further away, giving you less distance to have to travel for the coin.
Did you know: inside the West bell tower (the one above the jail room) in Delfino Plaza, there is a Rocket Nozzle box just sitting inside the tower, and it reflects the status of the main one near the fountain? (You can see it from the rooftop next to the West tower with the banana, line up so the Banana is between you and the Tower, press up against the railing, use the L button (strafe) to force the camera into the tower, pull the camera almost all the way back, and there it is. No idea why it's there, or where it would drop the Nozzle, though.
I went years not even knowing this level existed man. As a kid i just had no idea what to do. You can imagine my excitement when a friend told me to look at the sun. I then couldnt progress far in the level because the eel scared me XD
I had to get my older cousin to play the Eely Mouth Dentist level for me. Gooper Blooper freaked me out as well when I was 8. The cheep cheeps dragging me down into the water still kind of freaks me out as an adult...
You are amazing. The way that you present the game is always so good. Everything you say sounds so natural. Doesn't even sound like it's from a script. I'm really hoping your channel grows. ❤❤❤ All the best

I'm not the biggest fan of Sunshine since I value the level of polish and intentional level design most other Mario games are known for but the vibes in this game are always immaculate and Noki Bay is the absolute peak for this game, imo.
Hey man I found you with this sunshine series and went back and watched all of your sly cooper stuff. Your stuff is great!
Massive hype when I saw this drop! I adore this game and I am so happy seeing someone talk about it!
I found this series from a random TH-cam recommendation, but it's been stellar to see such a deep dive into such a good game.
Side note, I loved the 2 second clip of the Radiance theme when showing Piantas complaining about the darkness!
love this series so much, i never thought there was anything left for me to learn abt my favorite mario game
The blue coin map you made that fades into the bigger blue coin map at about 47:53 is incredible. Really great stuff.
The attention to detail in these videos is insane, most worthwhile watch i’ve had in a very long time
Hopping in here to say I love this series sm! Sunshine is one of my favorite games, and seeing all these niche and rarely talked about aspects of the game is amazing. So happy this popped up on my recommended!
I checked the playlist of this last night and saw there was an unavailable video. Needless to say, I was excited to see this pop up on my feed.
you couldn't try to make a video series more perfect than this.
I was just thinking yesterday "there was a shorter break in between the last two videos than the last video and this one, noki bay MUST be a long video" boy how happy I am to be right
Amazing work as usual! Your love for this game is palpable and I'm glad it's being rewarded with attention and patreon support. Keep up your passion
You've outdone yourself. That Gooper Blooper fight was epic
geez okay fine guess i won't go to bed just yet.
Some minor corrections and clarifications because I am a massive SMS fan:
3:04 You can actually see the very top of Noki Bay from Pianta Village; Specifically the spot where Gooper Blooper is fought.
I dunno what it is. I just love your voice. It’s so smooth on my ears, I’ve watched your sunshine breakdowns too many times.
39:30 I always get this one just fine by repeatedly jumping out of the water and then instantly belly flopping for quick forward speed. And I'm pretty sure you can also move the mud boat out to sea to spray the graffiti circle from even further away, giving you less distance to have to travel for the coin.
Great episode, also I really like the way you show the blue coins each world!
I adore this series, I get so excited when i get the notification for a new episode :)
Sir I cannot explain how much I enjoy this series.
i love this series and i’m always shocked that this isn’t a million subscriber channel !!
Love this series so much, I'm always excited for the next episode! Looking forward to what comes after as well of course :-)
You are amazing. The way that you present the game is always so good. Everything you say sounds so natural. Doesn't even sound like it's from a script. I'm really hoping your channel grows. ❤❤❤ All the best
I really enjoy your videos, they've been very informative, funny, and I just love seeing more content on Super Mario Sunshine in general.
I love the way you meander from one thing to the next in these videos.
So glad to see there're people who still enjoy playing Sunshine!
Truly the pannenkoek of Super Mario Sunshine, I love your stuff man!!!
Yus finally! Been waiting for another video in this series! Excited to get to watching this episode!
Omg finally my Favorit Level. Wiht my Favorit music, Level desing and some nice (for me as kid) mysteries to uncover
Noki Bay’s always been my favorite. Maybe it’s the music or the joy of just lazing around the water (when it’s not covered in poison, anyways)
