    Rick Installs and Reviews the GrimmSpeed Crank pulley on our 2015 Subaru WRX!
    Your factory crank pulley is responsible for transferring energy from your crankshaft to your water pump, a/c compressor and alternator. It does this by way of a rubber belt and it does it's job well. The drawback to the factory pulley is that it's quite heavy. Reasons for this include less expensive manufacturing and using the pulley's mass to smooth out 'noise' in the accessory system (NOT to be confused with functioning as a harmonic dampener, which it does not). The GrimmSpeed Lightweight Crank Pulley reduces the rotational mass of the system, allowing your engine to accelerate and decelerate the rotating assembly more quickly.

    Is the installation as simple as getting the bolt loose and bolting up the new one to spec torque? Do you need to worry about messing up the cam timing other internal adjustments? Also any additional benefit from swapping other pulleys as well? I believe the FA20 has three lightweight pulleys out that will fit the Crosstrek FB20. Thanks

    I think this will add the car about 1-5 hp, doesnt make a big difference ,, they look nice tho. If you have tons of horse power on a car i would not recommend alloy pulleys , they could bend if you put too much tension and heat at the same time

    i saw another video were you could buy a tool to hold it in place while unbolting the crank pulley, would i need that on a 2012 legacy

    this video is extremely misleading on how to swap these out. you def need a tool to loosen off the stock pulley....and u have to pull off at least 1 of the front fans in order to have enough room to pull off the bolt for the pulley...
    of course you edited those parts out to make it look like a 5 minute install....not cool...not cool

    • @rallysportdirect
      @rallysportdirect  7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      The crank pulley removal tool is nice for sure, but on a manual car you can easily put it in top gear, have someone hold the brakes and use a giant breaker bar to break the bolt loose. In regards to the fan, we did not remove any fans for this install, and all of the instructions I can find online do not mention the removal of the fan. Hope this helps anyone involved in the process of installing a new pulley! :)
      Thanks,
      Rick

    • @bwilson7990
      @bwilson7990 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You don't need a tool for this to remove the crank pully once the bolt is out. It comes right off. Just be careful to not also pull out the key way spacer out with it. The pulley fits on the end of the key way spacer and the spacer then slips over a key on the crankshaft. It will come out if you're not careful and is not easy to put back in...

      +krauser979 Not on the Subaru Engines, but on most engines you would want to make sure it has a proper harmonic balancer.

    why would you like the engine to rev down fast? isn't it better to keep the rev up between shifts to keep it within the better power range?

    • @ErectileSceptile
      @ErectileSceptile 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Late on the answer, but this is actually false. Rev hang can make shifting a bit jerky, as it will cause the engine and flywheel to continue operating at a higher speed than the friction plate, so when the two reconnect (when you let go of the clutch) it creates a jerky, almost engine-braking force. This is especially noticeable on the 2015+ WRX when shifting 1st to 2nd.
      For more proof of this, listen to a couple videos of a 2015 wrx doing 0-60 pulls. You'll hear in most/all of them that there will be a sort of "wobble" in the engine note after shifting into second gear.

    Try messing with the Tune Rick

  • @a-aron1238
    @a-aron1238 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Not sure how it would help if its a direct replacement. The Pulley is mounted directly at the Center-of-Gravity so there is no change in rotational load. It would just shave a few pounds off of the overall car weight. If the Pulley is larger than the OEM Pulley then I can see an improvement in response since a larger wheel means a larger tangential distance.

    I tired loosening the bolt to remove the pully but it won't come off. Only modification I have done to my 2015 wrx is added an intake and bov. Now my rpm is very low. Sometimes under 500 where the car almost stalls out. Any help would be appreciated. In the video it looks so easy as its just removing a bolt. But mine won't seem to budge. Thanks

      Agreed, but when you reduce weight you increase the amplitude of naiscent harmonics proportional to the decrease in overall rotational inertia etc.. thats all i was getting at

      SlingSalsa Just asking, if these are bad for motors why do the companies still make them? And what's your opion on Fluidampr and their claims?

    • @SlingSalsa
      @SlingSalsa 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      no auto manufacturer will just toss an engine/head die, they will milk it for all its worth, look at the GM 3800 that has been in 'service' for the past 50+ years, its an good motor, it does have its issues like any motor. I have a fluidampr on all of my fleet vehicles and personal vehicles, it does what its designed to do, elastomer dampers work within a specific frequency so long as the material stays pliable, for me to use an elastomer damper makes no sense because any motor does not stay harmonically static. I have my issues with the ej motors, which is why i like to have my blocks and heads and trans cryo dipped to increase the structural rigidity, fatigue resistance, and thermal conductivity of everything on a complete build to minimize possible structural failures at really high cylinder pressures, and I will always use a silicone fluid balancer so it is effective at any harmonic range. Since a static balance is the only thing we can machine to, i find the viscous silicone is the best we have to achieve a dynamic balance.

    just wait till you get a light flywheel with clutch. you cant run these light pulleys amd a light flywheel at same time youll get a misfire CEL....leave this stock and do a light flywheel instead. Youll get the nice blip w throttle from that. stay away from the cute $110 romance parts

    • @rallysportdirect
      @rallysportdirect  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +05EVORS Currently we do not plan on going with a light weight flywheel, so a light weight pulley is a great and easy way to remove some rotating mass off the engine without having to remove the transmission or engine, however you are correct in that if you run with a pulley and flywheel combination that is too light, you can have issues with misfire CELs.

      It really is not a hard install. Our WRX when this was installed has maybe a few K miles on it, so I can understand it being a bit more difficult on a car with higher mileage, but other than that, it's not too bad.

      On a Subaru the crank pulley doesn’t require a harmonic balancer..so it won’t hurt it at all just making it lighter..I wouldn’t do this modification on anything else. You are right about any other motors..
