Knowing that Sultan Murad will not stop anymore, Kösem Sultan takes measures to protect Şehzade İbrahim.

Validesinin hekimbaşıyla anlaştığını öğrenen Sultan Murad, Emir Çelebi’nin kellesini Kösem Sultan’a (Nurgül Yeşilçay) gönderir.

@@Garium87 forget the power hungry part I agree towards the end Kösem became s monster and power hungry. But close your eyes for a moment picture yourself in Kosems shoes and imagine how you will survive such environment. Infact alll women became like that in the show, it was just that Kosems, nurbanus turhans because more pronounced because they were in it to win! It's a war of survival, betrayal backstabbing. Kösem was wrong in trying to outshine Murad but in his reign and the matter of the spahi Rebel, Gülbahar, she was trying to protect Murad. If not for Ibrahim, Kösem tried to protect her children no matter what. She just made missteps that had them killed.
You were talking about sacrificing her children, was it not Osman who she raised that killed her Mehmet after the laws has been changed, if it were me I would kill Osman myself (if I was in that scene, irl I'm not capable of killing) for killing my son. Two was it not Murad that killed Kasım. The only son I know she sacrificed willingly was Ibrahim and for that I agree with you, that the power got to her head and she became crazed for it l. But aside from that Kösem did what ever mother would do in that setting she found herself in. Besides every mother still see their grown up sons as their little babies. In a scene she mistakenly called him(Murad) son in front of his officials forgetting he was the sultan. That is a mother. You had to be ruthless to survive in those times. So no I am not a feminist at all but I don't believe Kösem sacrificed her children. I hate how the media loves to make women of power seem evil because of the power they amass. Look at Hürrem for example, she was not even an empress but because of the influence she had on the sultan they called her a witch. But any ways the women of the era of women in ottoman empire were successful and they did it to survive and they did and left a legacy. I'm so glad I have a choice not to join politics because I will not be forced to do what they did to protect myself and family.

Difference is Kosem was killed because she was extremely powerful and some people in power didn't like that. They viewed killing her as the only way to strip Kosem from her powers, but even that was hard for them to accomplish, they had to execute many intrigues and plans before they were able to kill her in secret, the "in secret" part is important.
But funnily enough that couldn't erase decades of work and influence, Kosem's legacy chased them years after her assasination.

It's based on actual history. The Ottomans were often brilliant, but their power struggles were brutal. There was an ancient Turkic tradition that of the brothers, only one could survive -- the smartest, most ruthless one. The Ottomans kept this until the 18th century. There was logic to this. When you had many potential rivals to the throne, you had constant instability at the heart of power. On the other hand, in Europe where traditions were different, you sometimes had a complete idiot take the throne just because he was born to the right mother and in the right position. This way, by the time a Sultan took the throne, he had proven that he was the most intelligent, shrewd and ruthless of the bunch and all rivals were dead. They changed this starting in the 18th century, but what happened is that the quality of the sultans really began to go down and the Ottoman Empire declined.

She burned down a fifth of the entire city of Istanbul just to prove a point and she has the gall to stay defiant even until the point of death. This world is cruel enough, so why do you have to make it even worse by inflicting your pain on others? She's had it rough, we all get it, okay. However, she's not the only one who has suffered, and she is not an avenging angel. She is an old woman who chose to live out her days as a bitter, selfish, spiteful, malicious hag who would've sold her own mother just to get her so-called revenge. Islam fails to create good family values. Indian kings did not do like this.

They were also muslims, and it's not islam which fails to create good family values it depend on individuals, islam never told any king to be like this, they were the kings and and their families who had hate for each other and jealously, islam always have it's rules for family, individuals, public and society and it's the people who either follow them or not. Islam even values step-parents and siblings.

@@thennavans3965 maybe they sacrificed their brothers to have an islamic state to promote islam and justice, and it's not islam which told them to do so they were the kings who did so, so you can't blame islam for that!
