Micro air abrasion fossil prep on a weird crab [Vaniman Problast]

This is one of the fossil preps I starting with an air scribe and soon realised that I will need another method to prep it as I was going to damage the coral / growth on that is all over the crab.
I got my hands on a new Vaniman Problast and sifted out some dolomite, catching it between a 100 and 63 micron sieve. 2 hours later I had enough for a bit of prep on that tricky crab, after a bit of a rest of course!
The results are truly outstanding! I can't wait to try this out on some other fossils and see what it can do. Micro air abrasion is now another method I can try on my fossil finds.

@@MamlamboFossils I didn’t think about that. Your fingers won’t feel like they still have a glove on when you stop the air abrasion tool. Haha.
Does it or the air scribe tools heat up much during use? I do wood burning with what is basically a soldering pencil, after a while, even the handle gets uncomfortably hot. Had to get a heat resistant glove to use for longer work sessions. I know…totally different sort of heat produced by the tools you use. My brain gets obsessed with similarity connections. haha

Great addition! I used to use a sandblaster for cleaning old tools and things found metal detecting. I can see the fun in that 👌! A very needed tool for your "prep" toolbox 🧰 😀

We just don't have the fossils here but a few Crinoids and bi-valves. If or when I can get to better specimens; this is the most important tool behind the Dremel. 🍻 👏

You can build the meshes onto a wooden base which is mounted on 3 or 4 springs with a sanding machine underneath. That way you don't have to dry it in the oven.

Search for 'poor man's ultrasonic cleaner' or 'ultrasonic cleaner with sanding machine'
It can be applied to sifting sand. 👍

Looks very cool, nice job. I wonder if those branching growths could be serpulid worm tubes? It suggests that the shell was sat on the seabed for a while before burial. Totes jelly of your set up too. I've got a bunch of stuff waiting for prep but I don't have gear, or the space to put it atm.
I have no idea what the growths are, I've just posted on thefossilforum.com asking that question. Serpulid worm tubes (after I googled it!) seems like a good match.
The problem I have is space as well, also being in NZ it's very difficult to get any gear in without doubling the price because of shipping!
The dream is to have a large shed with a gantry so I can move the larger blocks in and out of acid vats 😁
Hello , could it be an ancient type of Dresser Crab, the ones that stick vegetation and coral to themselves for camouflage and to entice food towards them, as the veins look like seaweed roots. Only an idea. Great gadget though, a bit more accurate and quicker than acid dipping.

I don't think it's a dresser crab, these were very deep water - Tumidocarcinus giganteus is the species. It's a great tool, different applications than acid

The traces on the carapace and claw look a bit like serpulid worm tubes, but I could be wrong.
Geology Johnson said the same thing, after I googled it, it looks like a possibility!

I do know some restorers use nut hulls to take away rust and paint. don't know how well that will work for what you are doing as it may not remove the sediment.
I've seen the walnut media, I just need it very, very fine which might be a challenge.
Very cool, I wonder how that unit would work on those Lobsters that you found... or were they crayfish... regardless, I believe you mentioned they were really hard to work with with the methods you've had access to because they are so fragile. I wonder how this would work?

I think the turtle skull might be a good contender. All of those nooks and crannies are just made for this machine.
The acid is working great on it, acid will probably still be my first choice for bone.
Amazing! As an amateur beginner fossil hunter I find many in the beach from the Carboniferous here in Northumberland (northern England). But lacking your skills they stay as a piece of rock on my shelves. For how many years have you been working in fossil preparation and setting up your lab?
Maybe some walnut shell for the blast material.

THat's brilliant! I know people who use baking soda as an air abrasive but that's for removing rust etc so it might be too abrasive for your use.

@@MamlamboFossils it goes by bicarbonate of soda and sodium bicarbonate as well (all the same thing) depending on where you live and where you get it from etc
Iron, might it leave rust deposits? I know you'll test it first. Looks like a good tool.
I'm unsure what the iron powder will do but it's used quite a bit in fossil prepping. I think it can make the fossil a darker color.
I usually get dolomite from ceramic and clay suppliers.

I’d love to know whereabouts you find your fossils! I’m in nz and I’ve looked (although not very thoroughly) and haven’t really found anything. Not sure if I’m looking in the wrong places or looking for the wrong things
Pretty much every sedimentary rock beach in NZ! Fossils everywhere

Those almost look like some sort of anchor worm on the crab.

I actually got this crab at our local rock club! It's a very weird one, I don't think it decorated itself like those decorator crabs but perhaps something lived on it after it died?

Were the growths something that was on the crab when it was alive, or did they grow or settle on the body of the crab after it had died?
I'm leaning towards after it died, maybe how the iron pyrite formed?
Can you re-use the sand if you sift it out again ?

I'm still enjoying it! You have to make sure to have a dry air supply and make sure the media is dry as well otherwise it will clog.

We are a friendly bunch! I found a crab and wanted to see what it looked like so got an electric engraver and found I enjoyed the process
