  • Ichthyosaurs: Fascinating marine reptiles
    1. Incredible Adaptation to Aquatic Life:
Ichthyosaurs were not dinosaurs, but marine reptiles that, over the course of evolution, were perfectly adapted to life in water.
Their streamlined bodies, powerful fins and flexible dorsal fins enabled them to move smoothly in the sea.
Her nostrils shifted upward to allow for easier intake of air as she surfaced to breathe.
    2. Impressive size and variety:
Different species of ichthyosaurs varied greatly in size and shape.
The smallest was about 1 meter long, while the largest, the Shonisaurus, reached up to 21 meters.
Over 80 species have been discovered so far, each with unique characteristics, e.g. B. different jaw shapes and fin sizes.
    3. Reproduction and lifestyle:
Unlike most reptiles, ichthyosaurs gave birth to live young, similar to mammals.
Fossil finds of young animals in the womb give us insights into their reproductive biology.
They were skilled hunters and fed primarily on fish, squid and other sea creatures.
    4. Mysterious evolution and extinction:
The exact origin of ichthyosaurs is still unclear, but their evolution may be linked to the mass extinction at the end of the Permian.
After approximately 150 million years of dominant marine presence, the ichthyosaurs became extinct at the end of the Cretaceous period. The reasons for this are the subject of scientific debate.
    5. Fascinating Fossil Finds:
Numerous ichthyosaur fossils have been discovered around the world, providing us with valuable information about these impressive marine reptiles.
Particularly famous is Mary Anning's discovery in 1811, which is considered to be one of the first complete dinosaur skeletons.
    Other interesting facts:
Ichthyosaurs had large eyes that gave them excellent vision in murky seawater.
Their skin was probably smooth and dark to aid camouflage.
Some species had long, pointed teeth for hunting large prey.
Ichthyosaurs offer us a window into a bygone world and testify to the incredible diversity and adaptability of life on Earth.

What PSI do you use on bones, such as Icthyosaur ribs without damaging them?
