Ah, I can commiserate with the long hike in the dark in the middle of the night! In my case, it was before the age of cell-phones, so the hike was always to find a pay-phone. Instead, you found fossils! Woot-woot! Well done. And yes, sometimes it pays to carry that UV hand-torch. Loved watching the prep, I'm always interested in those. Fun video!

I suspect you might find that a cordless drill with a hammer function would be a great labor saver for chiseling samples out of substrate and opening them. A cordless angle grinder and a bunch of wafer or diamond edged cutting discs would also be useful for trimming excess weight off larger samples.

That was quite unexpected cardio 😮 You are in good shape though proof is wrestling around large rocks, carrying a heavy backpack, dragging a wagon, and a kayak to get your finds back to your vehicle. I'm glad you got out of it safe and sound. p.s. Going forward, prolly equip the car whenever you're fossil hunting, with one of those portable jump starters. Better to have it and not need it, type thing. They're not that easily found on the market anymore, for some reason, but i have one of those you can use a rope to generate power with, to charge a battery inside. Just enough to give the car a few jolts or more pulls, for more (pump and lights, i don't use those tho). I swapped my battery for two large capacitors, and it's an excellent tool for the car. Three years ago, i was stuck in the North of Europe, in the snow with a dead battery (kaput, cracked open) and that "toy" saved my derriere. So, really, a jump starter of any kind, is indispensable. Just my 2 cents, nothing more.

oh man, that was a stroke of bad luck. Nothing fazes you though! Its well worth getting a jump start battery pack, I got an 'Arteck' one from Amazon. Tiny little thing, and not that expensive, but has saved my bacon a few times when my car battery was dead.
Yup, fire embers can smoulder under dry sand for several days, and travel along dead tree roots etc then pop up several meters away from the original fire site under the right conditions. It happens more often than you'd think in sandy pine forests and on beaches, there's always a reason when you're told not to have fires in certain areas. Well done for spotting that and putting it out though, I'd hate to see it spread to all that dry driftwood or the brush on the hillside

Its needed in this case because as the rock dries out bits can start to crumble and flake off since it's essentially just a lump of harder clay caused by decaying organic material (the crab) in a very soft siltstone. Again it's clear you don't have any experience with such things but that's no reason to claim he is lying just because you don't understand basic geology or conservation techniques

It looked like you were able to remove more material faster with this one. Could the mineral be selenite? The crab fossil might glow in uv light. Just a guess though. -29 celsius here in the Edmonton Canada area tonight. Bleck! Nunavut much closer to the North Pole is -5. Weird huh?

There is a place about 245 miles that has a ton of sharks teeth also Ray stingers and some kindof shark or fish that had crushing teeth about thumb sized. Never gone but want to, it just stays crowded with people hunting too. I've spent the last 20 years not doing much but working. About time to start hunting for things again. There are places from Florida to North Carolina that have big megalodon teeth. Always too far away for me to just go for a weekend. Hunted a small river near here thinking I may find some shark teeth, because there is a Creek called Shark's Tooth Creek that dumps into it and people have a park built where the teeth can be found. Had no luck, was summer time and the water moccasins were hiding all over. I have an old boat I plan to fix up so I can go to some sandy rivers a couple hours drive. The boat is 25 feet and has a big cabin to sleep in but is made of aluminum so it is light enough to trailer. And makes a good safe camper. Also have a few places that are abandoned settlers town and Native American village sites. Want to metal detect and hunt arrowheads and things. Really enjoy your videos and another guy's called Aguachigger, he is a relic hunter. You two guys make me want to get out and hunt old things again. Thank you man.
So on the crab thay wasn't preserved real well, I myself am wondering if it could possibly be the minerals or other things in the soil itself , that can cause the material of the crab to fall apart or for a lack of better words " disenitigrat? Hope I spelled it correctly Anyways could that be the reason ? I have come across this problem all of the time in my area. Also, how do I go about finding out, just how long ago my area, here in Southern Calif has been out from under the ocean ? I guess i should be emailing you in order to get a conversation going or question answered . ❤ i love your show, I too am a fossil freak . Thats what i call myself. Not harm intended. Are the "concretions" formed by the natural body fluids of the crab leaving its body ? If the damaged ones are higher up could it be possible that it was put / deposited there by an ancient tsunami that could have caused the initial damage to the crab ? ... or is that new location old beach that has been raised in the past ? Are there a few hundred thousand+ years difference in age between those fossils you've found at the new site and those you've found by the beach ? Was your battery drained on purpose so that you would be forced to walk / look / think / discover ? [10km is not actually / factually an unusual dispersal pattern for crabs !]
Concretions can form in a few different ways from what I understand, one way is the natural decomposition process. The layers are probably many, many years of sediment build-up on the ocean floor. No idea on the age difference between the sites. My battery sure wasn't drained on purpose.
I know this is wishful thinking, but could the really huge round rocks hold something huge? Are they just giant conglomerates of shells? They are awfully rounded...like the smaller rocks.
The first crab, the damaged one...what about an inside prep? IE, revealing the inside portion of the carapace... i haven't seen that done yet, and the piece is, by all accounts damaged on both sides, so it's not like you'd lose a valuable specimen, IMO.
What about on site prepping (?) . Cover with plastic. There are suitable sealants available that should help protect the specimen throughout the tidal process. It may seem weird, but have a joint and read it again. Great channel. Bottle your enthusiasm and never work again. 🌬
I've been wondering the same thing. I think it might be possible to remove fractions of a millimeter at a time and know when the rock has changed colour. 🤔
I worry about you when you pick up a huge rock & climb out of the beach. Worry you will get hurt or have a Heart attack.. Your comment on "Cardio" was not funny.. Added to my worry. Please, be careful. Glad you reached Cell Phone range & had the Cavalry charge to the Rescue.. Do you keep an emergency supply of water & energy bars in the car? or backpack? Hi Lemay Nelson hear love your show I wish I could be there with you hunting for fossles to my mother and I would walk the beach and cliffs of California and finde a lot of buitifule agates and I would finde crabs also I found a fossilized shrimp in a large termite I think that might be the write spelling it was perfect I kept it for along time till one of my relatives stole it from me anyways I'm 75 years old I just want to till you your one handsome man I'll keep the rest to myself keep doing what you do I'm sure there are a lot of people love your show you have such a sweet spirit about yourself

That is crazy cold! It could be selenite or perhaps calcite but didnt look to be the right colour for calcite. Thanks for watching!

Always too far away for me to just go for a weekend. Hunted a small river near here thinking I may find some shark teeth, because there is a Creek called Shark's Tooth Creek that dumps into it and people have a park built where the teeth can be found. Had no luck, was summer time and the water moccasins were hiding all over. I have an old boat I plan to fix up so I can go to some sandy rivers a couple hours drive. The boat is 25 feet and has a big cabin to sleep in but is made of aluminum so it is light enough to trailer. And makes a good safe camper. Also have a few places that are abandoned settlers town and Native American village sites. Want to metal detect and hunt arrowheads and things.

So on the crab thay wasn't preserved real well, I myself am wondering if it could possibly be the minerals or other things in the soil itself , that can cause the material of the crab to fall apart or for a lack of better words " disenitigrat? Hope I spelled it correctly

Also, how do I go about finding out, just how long ago my area, here in Southern Calif has been out from under the ocean ? Need a friend with a pick up and a hoist on the back or someone who can put a hoist on the back for the big rock.

Are the "concretions" formed by the natural body fluids of the crab leaving its body ?
If the damaged ones are higher up could it be possible that it was put / deposited there by an ancient tsunami that could have caused the initial damage to the crab ? ... or is that new location old beach that has been raised in the past ?
Are there a few hundred thousand+ years difference in age between those fossils you've found at the new site and those you've found by the beach ?
Was your battery drained on purpose so that you would be forced to walk / look / think / discover ?
[10km is not actually / factually an unusual dispersal pattern for crabs !]
Concretions can form in a few different ways from what I understand, one way is the natural decomposition process. The layers are probably many, many years of sediment build-up on the ocean floor. No idea on the age difference between the sites. My battery sure wasn't drained on purpose.
I have a question about concretions. How come some fossils seem to just be in clay, not the concretions I'm used to seeing around crabbies etc?
I know this is wishful thinking, but could the really huge round rocks hold something huge? Are they just giant conglomerates of shells? They are awfully rounded...like the smaller rocks.
Some of the big ones do you have crabs or bone clusters in them, but they can be too big to carry home 🤔

The first crab, the damaged one...what about an inside prep? IE, revealing the inside portion of the carapace... i haven't seen that done yet, and the piece is, by all accounts damaged on both sides, so it's not like you'd lose a valuable specimen, IMO.

They're also concretions, septarian concretions. I'm not sure if they have fossils in the middle though.

What about on site prepping (?) . Cover with plastic. There are suitable sealants available that should help protect the specimen throughout the tidal process.

I've been wondering the same thing. I think it might be possible to remove fractions of a millimeter at a time and know when the rock has changed colour. 🤔
Livin in New Zealand has many similarities to living in Montana. No people.
Montana looks a bit colder from what I've seen but maybe similar to the southern part of the South Island.
I worry about you when you pick up a huge rock & climb out of the beach. Worry you will get hurt or have a Heart attack.. Your comment on "Cardio" was not funny.. Added to my worry. How old do think the crabs you find are?
They are mid Miocene so around 12 million years old.

Hi Kane! I'm not sure around Auckland but there is definitely near Taranaki. Have a look on the GNS website, they have a list of fossil sites 😀

It's called a concretion, very similar to the process of concrete, that's why it looks like cement

Hi Lemay Nelson hear love your show I wish I could be there with you hunting for fossles to my mother and I would walk the beach and cliffs of California and finde a lot of buitifule agates and I would finde crabs also I found a fossilized shrimp in a large termite I think that might be the write spelling it was perfect I kept it for along time till one of my relatives stole it from me anyways I'm 75 years old I just want to till you your one handsome man I'll keep the rest to myself keep doing what you do I'm sure there are a lot of people love your show you have such a sweet spirit about yourself
