- Mega Man didn't stay on the Super Nintendo for very long. In fact, the next game in the series is for both the Sony Playstation and the Sega Saturn. For this review, we'll be looking at both versions. Celebrating Mega Man's 10th Anniversary, does the eighth installment in the franchise break new ground, or is it just a prettier game we've all played before?

The easiest explanation is that the voice director is terrible and/or the Voice Direction was done in Japan with people who spoke English with Japanese Voice Direction, which makes it much different since EN and JP voice acting calls for different deliveries

I know voice acting was something new to gaming, but seriously, did they find this level of voice acting acceptable? Metal Gear Solid came out a year later. What excuse does Mega Man 8 have?

StarFox 64 has voice acting in it and that turn out fine and so did well Sonic Adventure.

Johnny, the PS2 Anniversary Collection has TERRIBLE input lag on all the games if you don't play on a CRT television. Same for the XBOX version. Everyone, save yourselves the frustration now, because input lag absolutely ruins these games.
I don't get what people have against CRT tv's. Retro games look horrible on a HDTV and the lag is terrible. I picked up a nice Sony CRT for $15 and the games look and play perfect
It's due to the general public just moving on from the CRT mindset.
Also my HDTV can handle retro games _ok_.

Such an underrated game... This one and 7 get too much hate for... well, not being 8-bit. But why is that so? Every game franchise has to evolve and adapt for the newer generations, and both 7 and 8 were doing that. People didn't complain when Mario or Zelda were leaving 8-bit, so why does Megaman get so much crap from doing so? And besides, no one would buy an NES game around 1995 or 1997...
Hell, 6 was 8-bit and it didn't get much love either. Nobody really cares about the Gameboy games either. Not even V. Just goes to show anything that's on a Nintendo handheld which originated from consoles just automatically doesn't matter to some people.
I think Megaman fans are too harsh when it comes to the games...

One thing that always confused me about Mega Man 8 and X4 is WHY give Mega Man and X a voice actress? I mean he's Mega MAN.
SuperZero2552 I can understand they were trying to go for a typical "Anime kid hero" voice TBH. I will say it's not perfect but It's honestly much more easy on the ears compared to Pac-Man's new voice in his latest cartoon outing.

LOVE the hell out of Mega Man 8. Graphics, music, level design, weapons, bosses', and yes even the so bad it's FUCKING AMAZING voice acting. One of my favorite MM games EVER.
To answer your seven year old question, no, the Japanese voice acting is considered to be well done.
I actually really like this one.
My only problems with it are the voice acting (which I find funny) and Wily Fortress 1's Snowboard level.

The problem with what you're saying is that John has gone out of his way many times to do research for franchises that he's not as well versed in so he can offer more than just his experiences. Beyond that, John is just an everyday gamer like you and me, and he makes videos explaining what games mean to him, whether they're familiar or not. And unlike the rest of the Brainscratch crew, he's humble and charismatic while he does it.
He's basically what gamers of today ought to strive to be.
I love how no one here is talking about about gameplay. Just the voice acting. No wonder this game gets such an unfair rep. In my opinion, it's a SOLID Mega Man game and I don't find it bad at all aside from voice acting. Of course it's not the BEST Mega Man game, but it sure as hell doesn't deserve the hate it gets.

I really, really loved this game as a kid. I beat it so many times and I had such a great time. It was my first MegaMan game ever and it made me search for the other titles. Now I am a die hard fan with ~almost~ all of the games. I think this game was aimed at a different age range. Looking at it now, it seems okay but I remember having the greatest of times with this game.
One thing I can't stand in this game is how if you leave your game and load back up in Wily stages they force you to start from the FIRST WILY STAGE! WHY?!!?
But didn't the past few classic Megaman games stop doing this before 8? Or am I thinking of something else?

xD Same here. Wily Stage 2 from the Sega Saturn version is my favorite track from all the classic Mega Man games. Nothing beats it IMO. I mean the gameplay of Mega Man 8 is awesome, but the voice acting is horrible just like in my favorite MMX game. :V

GooJoToons Animation The game doesn't suck wtf. It is a simple megaman game that follows the formula of its predecesors with a few changes. Its only flaw is the lack of ambition in an era where games had started to get more complex like RE and FFVII.
I don't fault the game for being like the others, I just feel that there are a lot of nuances that, don't hamper the entire experience, but, somehow manage to bother me. I think those little distinctions, do, hold the game back for me.
Dude, the only hard part about that stage was those two platforms at the very end of the hoverboard section. I had to waste some Astro Crush just so that I would clear that section.

my fav megaman game of all time... i just love the presentation, the look, the control and all the little voiceovers and the taunting from enemies.... i just love it
5, 6 and 10 are "Just Another Mega Man" games. But I can't agree with 7 and 8. MM7 justifies that statement like half-way through for itself, but 8 is completely different and more innovative (not implying that it's better). The game's stage designs are segmented and split into two parts (2x2). Some sections in the Robot Master stages are infact - puzzle sections (Astro Man, Sword Man). Astro Man has you going through labyrinths and I can say that I enjoy this kind of stuff, but it ain't particularly Mega Man. Also, it changes the way we look at the Shop and how we purchase items with the in-game currency, since this time around, the Bolts (or Screws) are 'rare' collectibles and we really have to 'explore'. A slower-paced approach on Mega Man, as it is mostly required for us to upgrade properly before facing Wily's Fortress.
6 is not just another Mega Man game. Did you not see the ending where Mega Man arrested Dr. Wily once before?

+SomecallmeJohnny As far as the Japanese voice acting is concerned, It is actually enjoyable. It is played straight, like an anime of its time would have done. The voice work is actually comparable to Detective Conan (Case Closed), and even shares some actors. But they have cliche voices for the genre: Dr Light is the good old professor voice; Megaman is the semi mature almost teen male protagonist; bass is the dark protagonist; they are cliche roles, but like I said, they are played straight, and that is enjoyable.
Think how superhero cartoons always have the same sort of voice types for characters.

Thanks to the Mega Man Legacy Collections, I'm able to play my favorite Classic Mega Man game at any time, I'm serious, I love Mega Man 8.
In fact, Mega Man 8, X4, and Legends were the first Mega Man games I've ever seen in action, as my older sibling would play them and I'd be watching, but now, I'm thankful to be able to experience these games for myself over the years.

Since my Japanese Saturn's in for repairs after it blew when I powered it on after some misinformation regarding using a UK power cable for a import system, I asked my older brother to order a Action Replay for me. And when I tested out Megaman 8, the FMVs stutter a bit at times but everything else plays just fine.

Actually Megaman 8 is the best Megaman game! I love the anime cutscenes, voice acting, & bolt management! Though i will admit, most of the music isn't really catchy, the anniversary edition is outright butchered, & the price of the saturn version is required to cutdown into a 1/8 of what it is!

There were a few newcomers in X4, but nearly all of the 8 cast also got cast in X4, for instance, as you mentioned, Ruth got recast as X's voice, Wayne Doster who voiced Duo and Astroman voiced Zero in X4,
Mattew Meersbergen who voiced Sword Man and Search Man voiced Colonel in X4, Michelle Gazepis who voiced Roll voiced Iris.
There are many others too, Darryl Stogre who voiced Dr. Light, Frost Man and Auto actually has a successful career in acting... how strange, guess he improved.
I love the commitment of saying Dr. Wahwee for the whole video.

8:42 Now imagine the cutscene after the Duo boss fight but lagging. My original copy of Mega Man 8 always lagged in that cutscene, causing the screaming to last at least twice as long. It was the only part of the game where this happened.

The Imput Lag is because you have an HDTV! Get a CRT TV! CRT Stands for Cathode Ray Tube. They are the old TVs from the Early 2000s and older.

He clearly plays his games on an HD TV. If he's experiencing lag, it's because of that. I've played MMAC on my CRT TV and never experienced any lag, but put it on the HDTV? It's unplayable.

Mega man 8, one of my personal favorite mega games with the coolest intro. I wish they kept the electrical communication since that also works. Voice acting can be funny and hard to hear but the game play is solid.
Also to get pass the jump jump, slide slide segment in wily segment the last jump just use meteor to save not losing a life.
Yea, Dr. Light's VA has a serious case of alcohol-induced brain damage, more like. Can you imagine who the hell C of A hired to do Light because I seriously can't picture such a person, short of some wino off skid row.
Not that I have anything against winos, I just don't think they make the best candidates to portray brilliant robotics scientists in the anime cutscenes of a Japanese video game.

i love mega man 8!!!(love it being next to street fighter alpha 3 as those are my favorites of that era of capcom along with darkstalkers especially,power stone,star gladiator & rival schools.:3)
(i love the playstation,sega saturn,dreamcast, and gamecube era of capcom the most it had such a 90's ova charm that added to the games appeal.:3) it along with 2,6,9,4 and 11 are my favorite classic series games and it has a style i would love to see capcom bring back for a new game(especially the animated cut-scenes since in capcoms beautiful art styles like kinu nishimura,akiman,edayan, or bengus and more settled voice acting should be brought back for it and an x9 or more megaman ova's as i loved them & other capcom anime like power stone and the darkstalkers ovas/street fighter 2:the animated movie.) i really like the Saturday morning 90's anime ova feel it had with its stages and music(my favorite being brand new way,electronic communication,frost mans stage in the city area,tengu man and clown man.)
and i didn't find the voice acting horrible(the only one that bothered me was dr. light's elmer fudd voice and compared to resident evil,early sonic,castlevania symphony of the night definitely and x4 especially in x's case wasn't that bad,more so early 90's anime dub if anything.) i really hope a version of mega-man 8 that has the sega saturn extras is released at some point (as i don't like that for some of collections are based on the inferior/weaker versions of certain games, especially x3 in the x legacy collection which should've at least included the boss intros as extras.).

Personally I think this game had some of the most useful weapons in the series.
Ice Wave is good for killing enemies on the ground, Tornado Hold helps you get to hard to reach areas, Flame Sword can take out enemies right in front of you, and Astro Crush is a decent screen nuke. The only useless one is Water Balloon. Man, I only used that one for Sword Man, nowhere else!

The audio quality is different; the PS1 version uses a MIDI-like format with unique instruments while the Saturn version has PCM-compressed music (think of the .WAV format) and better quality sound effects.
Yep. Kind of a shame that the Ps1 version is used in so many soundtrack releases for this game (aside from including Tengu Man's theme or Cut Man/Wood Man from the Saturn version).
Mega man 8 was originally going to be exclusive to the sega Saturn but Sony thought it was unfair so Sony forced them to make PlayStation version so in result capcom rushed out a PlayStation version and made a new track to tengu mans stage and added the extra features in the Saturn version.And in result to that Capcom made megaman legends.
i'm pretty sure there are Japanese voice actors who can speak fluent English...where the hell were they for THIS game (as well as Mega Man X4)?! These guys seriously need some ESL classes!
The Anniversary Collection has input lag on EVERY version of it from what I've seen, ESPECIALLY the GameCube version.
I confirm for the PS2 port. Noticed the lag after a few seconds and a couple jumps in MM2. And some people say that the jump and shoot buttons are inverted on GC too. ':(

Use a CRT, and the input lag goes back to what it was in the original releases. I've only tested this on the PS2 version, though, so I can't guarantee it'll work with the GC version.

I’m playing the legacy collection 2 version of megaman 8 and I agree with Johnny. I’m having so much trouble with Wahwee stage 1. Specifically the beginning of it because I can’t see what’s ahead of me and it’s frustrating. Not to mention not jumping when I pressed the jump button. There must be input lag in the legacy collection.

You're probably right. I Mean, what other horrible games are left? He has done Big Rigs, Superman 64 and Sonic 06. Either it's the CD-i Games or it's Bubsy 3D.
