Everyone knows the enormous gap between X4 and X5 was because they were busy achieving pure perfection...the ultimate life form that is...Duff McWhalen.
So (hypothetically)even on his deathbed,he stayed awake long enough or fought against death or however you choose to phrase it,to manage to change his arm, crawl out of the colony(which would take a HELL of a long time with an ARM),crawl all the way to Dr Light(STILL staying awake to actually make the journey), presumably, be fixed and come back ALL in three weeks? Huh.
@@98953812 I didn't mean to direct it at you,if that's how it felt :3 I'm genuinely forgot they could change their arms and stuff(I watch it because it's Johnny,I have no experience with Megaman :/ )and stated my assumption(which I made clear that I think it sounds absurd)
@@thefatcowv2.043 Ah, ok. But, yeah; it does sound like a VERY big stretch, even for Zero. If they put a bit more effort into it, maybe it could've been something like this; Zero was on the verge of death (yeah, I think reploids actually die instead of "going offline") and the spirit of Dr. Light found him. A few days passed and Zero woke up to find most of his body repaired and it is revealed that while the vast majority of his body is his own (when he was first restored in X2), the 10% was actually part of Mega Man X. This allowed Dr. Light to help repair him at this point because of Mega Man X's untapped potential now a part of Zero. What do you think of that idea?
...fuck that by the way, I hate how they did that. I'm so glad inafune before the American release including that zero timeframe. Yeah, apparently that's US exclusive
@@Super_Suchi I always thought that x7 and x8 conveniently took place BEFORE that scene with Zero sealing himself, but AFTER the rest of x6 for the sake of continuity or something
I think the funniest cutscene isn’t that one but rather the one where gate screams “gwaaaahhhhh!”. It’s even funnier than most of resident evils voice acting
Iris was a unique case. She and her brother were supposed to be two 'halves' of a Perfect Warrior Reploid, so their Control Chips were interlinked. Iris went insane after her brother was killed because her chip desynced violently without Colonel's presence.
because the writing in hte games is a dumpster fire and many levels and all the actual lore is therefore relegated to outside material. I'm not saying that the writing itself is garbage, but that it's management is.
But couldn’t they just try the project again but instead of building the “halves” just make another chip that isn’t synced with another chip & have it be it’s own thing, & make the new robot act like Iris ?
Guns N' Roses members (names of X5 bosses) : Slash (Grizzly Slash) W. Axl Rose (Axl the Red) Duff McCagan (Duff McWhalen) Steve Adler (Squid Adler) Izzy Stradlin (Izzy Glow) Dizzy Reed (Dark Dizzy) Matt Sorum (Mattrex) Michael "High in the Sky" Monroe (The Skiver)
What I love about the names is that it's like this unintentional nod to the the original Megaman AKA Rockman. Not stone, but the musical genre. You had another robot named Roll, a dog named Rush, a cat named Tango, a prototype, like a precursor to Rock who is Blues, and I even like the American names for Gospel and Forte, which are Bass and Treble.
Dio Drando I recently got into the Mega Man series *and holy crap I’m loving it..........no pun intended* ,my favorite so far is Mega Man 3. But Mega Man 4 is hard.. Ike.....any tips?
16:30 Well Johnny, something that Classic Megaman stated is that there's an IC chip in every robot that houses their personality. It is incredibly unique to each robot, like each station lock was made with a set of random number generator. If it's damaged beyond repair...then even if they're rebuilt, it won't be the same "person". I assume that Zero's death at the end of X didn't damage his IC chip, just his normal body. This is implied in the Megaman X remake where the maverick bosses in Sigma's castle don't have any of their memories and personality and just basically have a "kill X" mentality and that's it. Implying that their bodies were rebuilt but they weren't given another IC chip so they only have either their barely functioning one or Sigma gave them a new one that was more calculated and simple. Putting them just above the level of a standard mechanoloid.
Really the only reason why characters like Colonel, Iris, the General, Red, etc. couldn't be brought back they aren't (technically) bringing them back just letting their body's walk around.
I like how you ranted about X6 being impossible for unarmored X. HideOfBeast has a really good speedrun of Megaman X6 done through minimalist no-hit means, using powerups only at the two points where the game actually requires it. In it, you can just hear the dread in his tone for how broken the game is towards Unarmored X to the point where he questions why they even gave you the option to play as him in the first place. Check it out when you have a moment - good stuff.
Zero: i hid myself to repair myself ( earlier) Zero: ok i can do this. Put A slot into B slot and then into C slot and now put all of them into D slot. Alright i'v made my thumb, only the rest of my body to go!
Zero: The Arm Bones connected to the...Something. The something’s connected to the...Red Thing! The Red Thing’s connected to the, Uh...God, this is gonna be a loooong repair session
Ops, I almost forgot it: it's heavily implied that Isoc is Doctor Wily in robot form, and he was the one who repaired Zero. In fact, Zero asks Light in one of the capsules if he repaired him, but Light denies it, saying he can't do it since Zero's body is a mistery to him. Zero then asks Light if he knows who repaired him and Light simply remains silent.
You know, there's a whole other part to this story of how "Capcom made X6 against Inafune's wishes" that nobody ever seems to mention. That being how the man was already becoming more and more detached from the X series as it went on, to where he really had almost no input at this point. For X1, yeah it was his baby, but he was basically nothing but a background element at this point in the series. He started off as both a character designer and writer, then becoming just a character designer, then by X4 he was just a producer (so not much of anything), and then he actually had *nothing* to do with the vast majority of X5's creation. He basically just told the team; "hey, have the game end like this, because I wanna make a new series, kthx". Unless there are some behind-the-scene things that never came to light, that was the entire extent of his involvement with X5. Idk, people always talk about how this being "taken away from him" was some kind of great crime, but calling the X series "his" at that point just seems... exaggerated.
Kisaru1000 well if you have "The creator" of something along with his attitude, interviews, etc it's more or less implied heavily he wrote the stories and did the designs; I mean even if that's not the case other creators don't get shamed unless they do something really stupid that makes it look like they wanted to trash their own reputation otherwise who they work for becomes the scapegoat...... By which I mean people wag their hands in the air, make internet comments, reviews, and insults being angry......and then rinse and repeat in a few months or next year.
I feel it's also prudent to point out that Keiji himself had a history of going behind the backs of the execs and starting projects without their knowledge. So...
not quite sure how one does that exactly, but I guess two wrongs don't make a- But then again Game creators aren't considered corporate in game companies
I often find X6 to be genuinely fun when playing as Black Zero and just breaking the fuck out of the game, but like you said, if you have to exploit a game to make it fun then there's something Dreadfully wrong here. X6 is my least favorite in the series, but haven't played it for a good 6-7 years. 'Bout time I change that.
I see what you did there and you the win best satire of modern feminism award-you get the medal of a brofist from me and your entire career cancelled by feminists calling you sexist and misogynist for making a joke about their so called oppression.
Crimsonfall To be fair, Zero even admits while talking to Dr. Light that this explanation was bullshit. Even he wasn't sure what happened. In any case, it's heavily implied that Dr. Wily repaired him.
"C'mon, John. X6 isn't that bad!" >dickish hazards at random >bullshit boss that won't be damaged with a standard weapon >bullshit boss who'll spend 45 seconds giving you no means to attack >said bullshit boss is weak against his own attacks that you have to hit, but always ends up giving chip damage >pathetically easy boss after bullshit boss >level with an auto scroller, crushers AND conveyor belts >pits that can't be made without perks from hostages >spikes that are too high to make with vanilla X I'm sorry, what's "Not so bad" about this game?
the parts system, the challenge, the fun, the soundtrack, ALIA IS NOT ANNOYING, Zero's Movesets are better (except for that one special move) What other Megaman X game that has ever been as challenging and fun as X6? X8 is a bit close but ehh.
@A B To disregard everything in this thread what you've said is pretty redundant. Literally every game is easier on another playthrough, Megaman without a guide is always a bit difficult, it's designed for an arcade mentality.
@@gabrieldufloth5497 they're both on an equal scale of terrible for different reasons X6 has broken level hazards and terrible endgame bosses on top of a terrible localization X7 is just a slog with no impact to anything it does with stilted voice acting
Well, this video and MGS 2 did get close, but I feel like no other game has as many problems technically and mechanically as Sonic 06, so there's no way he's spending 25 minutes going over the gameplay to anything ever again.
You've probably already got this a lot, but the Nightmare effect in X6 is not completely random, and they don't necessarily lie to you. Alia (I think it was Alia anyway) mentions that the red highlights are merely changes in the nightmare situation, not that there will be a nightmare effect there. Each maverick also affects 2 other mavericks, with the exception being Shark Player affecting 3 and and Wolfang only affecting Shark player in 2 spots with some ice in the alternate path. You also don't even need to beat the boss in the stage to trigger the nightmare effect, it's there if you visit the stage. That means that you can manipulate it by replacing the Lights Out effect in Yanmark with the rain from Turtloid, and replacing the Turtloid Lights Out with the Soul Body ghosts from Shield Sheldon's stage. It's a truly asinine system, merely added to by it being explained in the most minimal way possible.
Fun fact--- you can clear X6 without ever finding Zero. In that ending, Zero is not only repaired, but watching X from a distance thinking to himself "X, you can handle things from here. You don't need me around anymore" and futzes off to go do his ending. Hoo boy, if only he knew of what was to come after that. Also, turns out I got my release dates mixed up for the Xtreme games.
+Spartan Q77 I love Johnny's fast phased nature of these reviews, the fact he's able to talk so quickly while still conveying his opinions almost flawlessly is a pretty amazing feat in my opinion. I mean, that's just how Johnny is, he's a man with a lot to say and when you got a script with a lot of dialogue you can't help but to read quickly to keep the flow of the video going, it's kind of like a free style rap where the rapper speaks extremely quickly yet is still able to make their raps understandable. That's what Johnny's like to me: a guy who speaks very fast, yet can still be understood no matter how fast he talks.
33:53 The worst example of this scenario is the extra route in Infinity Mijinion’s stage. Three hostages, over a bottomless pit, with one Nightmare directly on top of one, KILL ME!!!
I went through Mega Man X5 and X6 in Xtreme. X5 is fun. With X, it's a blast since with all the different armors it offers X more versatility. The Falcon Armor is broken. Zero however was a pain. Unless he is in Black Zero gear, then forget it. Zero is pretty much Hard Mode. X6 however. It was a struggle. A complete god damn struggle. But hey it makes it all the more satisfying when you beat it so you don't have to play it every again.
Shout outs to that one Nightmare blocking the alt-path in Metal Shark Player's stage on Xtreme mode, in the middle of that crusher; easily the worst Nightmare in the game on Xtreme, and I never found a good, consistent way of dealing with it as Zero, though I'm now aware of an invincibility glitch that would just let you ignore it...
Starscream91 I'm not a troll. Also, that was completely unnecessary, I was only helping improve their comment, since it actually confused me at first. No need to be a dick.
Starscream91 Maybe it isn't, maybe it is. Regardless, I wasn't trolling, and your kneejerk reaction honestly sounds much less "social" in my opinion. And no, I will "return" whenever I feel like it. I already said what I wanted to, and I'm free to comment on what I want. If it's such a huge problem to you, then I suggest you just ignore it.
Megaman x4:Sigma was revealed from the very beggining, capcom wtf Megaman x6:Sigma wasn't revealed in the plot and was just shoved in at the end, capcom wtf
I have to say, with 3 years to think about, this is my favorite video from this channel. A long video about a series I love from one of my favorite personalities on TH-cam. I watch this video multiple times a year, hell multiple times a month sometimes.
Thanks for the review(s), Johnny! I actually quite like X6, but you brought up a bunch of points that I was never fully aware of. I actually liked the level designs (though I can't defend Blaze Heatnix's), music, and gameplay. I never really cared much for the story, and so whenever I heard people complain about the game, people generally complained about the story first. But you did more than that, and now I feel like I understand a bit more. I never really knew that X in his basic armor couldn't complete certain parts of the game. And although I hit some dead-ends when exploring the game, I always just figured that I needed to re-visit that point at a later time (I guess games like Super Mario 64 made me more tolerable to stuff like that). So, thank you for your thorough analysis, and thank you for giving X6 a fair review! =)
People complain about X6's gameplay all the time. Heck, there are like 2 different in-depth reviews that mostly focus on breaking down X6's shortcomings as a game (J's Reviews and Retropolis Zone). I don't know how you managed to avoid that part of the backlash. It's probably even bigger than the continuity complaits.
HEEEEERE'S JOHNNY! It's been almost a month since the X4 review! Edit: Oh cool! I didn't expect you to review the Xtreme games! Great review by the way, Johnny! I completed X6 for the first time a couple weeks back, and I was literally covering my mouth and screaming by the end. That crusher section in Gate's stage can go BURN IN HELL. Also who else is hyped as heck for the eventual Mega Man Zero marathon?
Do you mean it can BURN BURN BURN TO THE GROUND BURN TO THE GROUND BURN BURN BURN BURN TO THE GROUND BURN BURN TO THE GROUND (yeah wrong game but fuck it)
"This game cheats so I cheat back." lol. My brother used to own X6. Only one we owned, though I'd played through X1 before. I was... ok. But, yeah, lots of frustrating shit. Never beat it.
Really? X6 is so easy though. The giga attack of the shadow armor kills every boss in just a couple uses, takes an Incredibly reduction in damage received, and is impervious to spikes. Shadow armor really makes the game difficulty trivial at best. There's only two difficult spots when using the shadow armor and they're two gaps that require the Jumper part and the Dasher part to make. Other than those two spots, it's incredibly easy.
X6 has a severe case of what I would call “Rom Hack” Syndrome. The story feels like some poor fan fiction after X5 with both the retcons and the English Translation. The new mechanics and level design while flashy is super unfair and bullshit. I know there is a ongoing debate to which is worse, but I find X7 more tolerable since it doesn’t piss me off to the degree of the dumpster fire of X6. X7 is boring, while X6 has broken difficultly balancing and is very unfair
X7 is a game im unable to play in any way shape or form without wanting to kill people by the end of it X6 i can just input a cheat code and coast through it happily.
I go insane playing x7 with or without cheats, X6 i can beat with or without cheats without wanting to kill someone it's just that X6 is more enjoyable if you use the armor cheats.
What? X7 just feels rotten to the core; X6, design aside, has the same base gameplay as X4. It's the main reason I can have fun with X6 but it's impossible for me to have fun with X7; have you seen how Zero controls in X7? Or that fucking Ride Chaser stage?
X6 having the same gameplay as X4 doesn’t matter if the level design and mechanics don’t support it,and X6 has some of the worst level design I have ever seen in a platformer. Add the nightmare effect which turn even the best of X6 levels into utter hell. Most of X7 is just non offensive and boring bar a couple of instances. Bar the intro stage,X6 is game that pisses me off to no end
British Media Bully yeah, i think act 4 and onwards in mega man 2’s endgame fortress is worse. At least mega man 4 lets you grind for ammo if you need to, or at least gives you some restores and doesn’t force you to empty your special weapons for specific parts of the castle.
The whole Sigma leaving X when he could have easily killed him is a Japanese culture thing, it doesn't make sense to us in the west because we have a different moral mindset when it comes to war/battling
Codysir true, but I didn't mean Sigma had the moral mindset, I meant the writers had that mindset, I don't agree with it, but it's the reason it's there
even taking this into account it's still terrible writing. by Sigma's character, it'd make more sense if he took that as an extra reason to kill him on top of the obvious ones.
Johnny's going to have a mental breakdown once he plays X7, I guarantee it. Especially when he gets to Flame Hyenard and the 30 minute boss rush. Also that Sigma Virus part made my day.
Iris can't be rebuilt because she broke her brain and not her body. The purple orb she uses on herself is Colonel's memory chip, she and Colonel were supposed to be the same Reploid but the program was too contradictory to function. Iris isn't actually trying to kill Zero, she's just nuts after using Colonel's chip (which I assume she did to hold onto whatever piece of her brother she could, risks be damned). You know how most players beat her armor senseless to force her to eject the crystal, her weak point? She does that on her own if Zero's in critical condition, you don't have to lay a finger on her to win that fight. So, back to X2, Zero was able to be rebuilt because Cain saved his "control chip" which is essentially his personality. After X5, at least in the final canon where X6 happens, X and the Hunters go back to look for Zero but never find him. How that works in the original version where X5 was supposed to lead directly to MMZ, I will never know. Wily's influence is generally believed to be behind Isoc in X6, but yeah, nothing afterwards. It's very bizarre of X5 to claim he is suddenly relevant, DO NOTHING TO RESOLVE THAT, and somehow claim to be the last game, I think anyone who says that X5 feels at all "final" is out of their mind. Like, we were just told Wily's back, we have no idea why shooting Sigma for the eleventh time kills him when the last ten times didn't, or why Zero's body is vaporized even if X was the one standing next to the explosion. Oh, and X5's ranking system? IT PUNISHES YOU FOR KILLING ENEMIES. Just so you know, that's why it's so easy to gain a rank fighting Dynamo. I love X6. It has its issues, but I love it the way a completely insane Mario fan loves Lost Levels, it's cheap, it's hard as hell, it's certainly not the way to market a franchise, but if you're crazy enough to be up to it, it's appeal is something you just don't find elsewhere in the series. I love the crazy number of power-ups that can be stacked on one character to plow through equally insane enemy mobs in Gate's Lab. Basically everything X5 did, X6 did better (Falcon Armor excepted), it's just X6 has a lot of its own issues. The story of X6 only retcons the 3 year timeframe, other than that it follows X5's good ending (just imagine it as following the ending as played by Zero, I guess). X5 doesn't really tell us one way or the other how bad the damage is if the Shuttle Operation is successful, just that the Earth is "safe" relative to the whole colony slamming into it. Zero is kinda bullshitting X in X6, if it wasn't obvious. If you get the Light capsules as Zero, he talks about not being sure how well his repair functions worked and at one point outright asks Light if he was the one to repair Zero, to which Light answers no and simply calls Zero's recovery miraculous. Light CAN'T rebuild Zero, he doesn't know enough about his body (his reasoning for not building an armor for Zero in X5). Neither can Cain, btw; Zero's X2 body was built by Serges (artbook stuff, not stated in-game but it is canon). Cain just put the pieces together after Serges built them. One character in X6, however, claims to have seen Zero in an early cutscene before X found him: Isoc. Same guy who can disable Zero with a flick of his wrist should Zero defeat High Max. Also, whoever fixed Zero rebuilt the Z-Saber, which Serges built, because X never gives the one he has back. So, yeah, Isoc is totally Wily. General consensus is that Isoc did the major repairs, Zero escaped somehow, and Isoc is attempting to recapture him. I know it seems like a stretch and X6 does a lot to hand-wave Isoc away, but by process of elimination Isoc is the only one who COULD repair Zero. It can't be X, it can't be the Hunters, it can't be Light, it can't be Gate. Light aside, all of them claim to have not seen Zero until X defeats Nightmare Zero. Isoc is the only character to claim otherwise, he also claims to know Zero inside and out, and he just blue-screens once his job is done. Alia is about as involved in X6 as any non-playable character ever was. And really, it beats the hell out of what X5 did with her. I didn't like X5's Alia, like, at all. X6 is what made me a fan of her. Also, winning X6 combination with X: Shadow Armor, Hyper Dash, Jumper, Overdrive, Buster Plus, Ultimate Buster. You rip through everything with the orange saber of doom, Overdrive the boss, game broken, Earth saved. It's a lot of fun, really, and I love the fact that X has another armor that can remotely compete with the Ultimate in sheer firepower. It's not as versatile, but it is an engine of destruction all the same and it's immune to spikes, hallelujah.
Why can't X and Zero be swapping his saber? Only one goes out at a time, and X doesn't have it past X6... Also, I think that a Life Recover is better than an Overdrive in your build; you can only use it once anyway, and you'll definitely want the life more in later stages.
The saber is on Zero's back when X first sees him. Also there is more than one Z-Saber in the Zero series, although IntiCreates' rewrites to the series gap muddy that a bit. Life Recover is up to preference. I keep separate X6 save files to stack all power-ups on one character, 16 Heart Tanks is plenty. Overdrive is Shadow Armor's best anti-boss weapon.
Holy shit, FINALLY. Someone that not only took the time to read, but to piece together the story AND to use the game mechanics to actually make the game easier. Wily returning is one of the most interesting narrative points the X series had going for them, having been teased since X2, saying that X5 gives "closure to the story" is completely stupid. Too bad X7 and X8 never followed on this. I love X6, and, if you play your cards right, the game becomes pretty easy with some armor and parts combinations, just like the Shadow one you mention (shadow with ultimate buster FTW). X5 had a lot of crippling problems like Alia interrupting everything, having to revisit stages a lot, and the ass backwards parts system. All of this was fixed for X6. While I do agree that some stages aren't the best, I truly believe most of the hate is completely overblown.
Well, the argument that X5 doesn't give closure because of Wily is based on the assumption that Wily must be an active player, which doesn't need to be the case. He's not X's nemesis, he's the original Mega Man's. Same reason why X2 directly references him, and arguably sets up that he has returned, but it's not really important. Him being a mysterious background element only serving to fuel the plot of the actual main enemy worked just fine. It worked in tandem with X5's revelation that Dr. Light is also still around in some energy form and serving as a guide and protector. To me, these revelations feel less like setups, and more just indications that the (literal) ghosts of the classic series have not yet been put to rest and old grudges continue to the current era, making our battle more momentous as we fight to finally put it all to an end. For all we know, Wily died alongside Sigma when the cyberspace maze or whatever the hell that was went down, if indeed he exists as some kind of cyber spirit as Dr. Light does (and Sigma, kind of). I will admit that the feeling of finality is probably helped along by the fact that we *know* it was supposed to be the final game. That said, there's a lot to the ambition behind it that can be seen and felt. We got the conclusion of Zero's story (which was the only consistent focus up until then, if we're being honest), the defeat of Sigma (doesn't matter why he's dead this time, he just is; this whole series has never been good at explaining stuff), the plot of averting destruction on a scale unseen before, and the constant callbacks and self-referential nature of many levels and aspects, especially tying the original series in with the X series.
Wily is already an active player, though. He didn't just tell Sigma what to do with Zero, he also built Final Sigma W, and unlike X2 Sigma makes it a point to emphasize his "new" ally and how much he hates X. Also the whole point to the "bad" storyline is to illustrate that X is the target of Zero should Wily have his way with him. So to say Wily isn't X's nemesis isn't exactly accurate. Also, Light being active is not a revelation to X5; he shows knowledge of current events in X4, and awareness of X's situation in X3. I will grant the scale and the self-referencing, but the latter only furthers ties to Wily. Other than Rangda Bangda (and reusing fortress bosses is not at all new to the Mega Man franchise), it's nearly all Classic derived. I don't get the conclusion to Zero's story because his death doesn't accomplish anything (X1 and Z4 were both more meaningful). Further, the reason we "know" X5 was the last is only because Inafune said so, but that ties to a misconception that X5 was his doing, and it wasn't. He handed it off to another team. Inafune never really cared how the X series concluded, he just didn't want to run X and Zero series at the same time.
Keiji Johnson command mission was fun but needed to be either longer or more fleshed out. I haven't played it in years but I remember it being story from beginning to end with no side quests or extra content an RPG needs. Has my favorite soundtrack in the X series in my opinion though. Oh and it had that force metal generator (sythesis) that when usef correctly I've heard can break the game in half.
So Zero gets his ass snapped in half, gets repaired, good as new. But Iris is 'decomissioned' and they're like "oh god she's gone, what do we do!? It's not like we can...fix her."
because iris's integrated chip(what the evil energy like orb she had in her fight was supposed to be) was destroyed beyond repair(which is the equivalent of destroying someones soul to a robot you could have the body but without the original personality intact its a lifeless husk. mhx actually did a good example of that to explain it's boss rush.) with zero in x2 dr. cain had his chip intact but the x-hunters had the body parts that kept them from controlling zero fully so x had to get the parts to repair zero with the chip.(i honestly feel its better explained in the classic and other series as the x series starting with the playstation really forgot they were still robots until x8,not helping that outside of dr. cain and light and wily's spirits we dont see any other human character in the x series.i feel instead of bringing sigma back from the dead for no reason like ganon in some zelda games the x series couldve had human antagonist like how classic had xander payne in the archie comics as we never see the retrospective of humans at all.)i do agree they couldve explained why she couldnt be repaired as its easy to miss and the death is too human like.
@@_V.Va_ guess so,just kinda wish they did it better.(considering maverick hunter x/powered up was going to adapt the rest of the series maybe they could've introduced characters early to give more time with them which i think was iris's main problem compared to zero's other interest.)
When a stage is red in X6 it does NOT mean it's currently afflicted by a nightmare effect, and the nightmare effects aren't random either. However the way it actually works is even worse than those two. If a stage is red it means that there was a CHANGE in what the current nightmare effects in the stage are. So if a stage is red, and then isn't red the next time you go to the stage select, that means it still has the same effects it had when it turned red before. And, if a stage is red two times in a row, that means it had another change in the nightmare effects, not that it has the same effects as before. And to make it even WORSE, a stage becoming red will never mean that an effect is turned off. Nightmare effects can NEVER be turned off, despite Alia saying that the red represents a general change in the nightmare effects. So basically, it's an intentionally designed system that's completely useless and garbage.
Pretty much what I wanted to say, though last sentence in the first paragraph is a little unclear so it should be clarified that the effects are completely impossible to turn off once it's on, so every time you enter the stage after the first effect is applied, a Nightmare effect will always be up. I'm not as harsh on the system but the effects are all annoying and while I don't have a problem keeping track of the effects it's just poor design. They could have at least clearly labelled the effect present, or even better yet let the player have a chance to play the levels without effects and give them incentives to pick less annoying effects for bonuses in the way Zero 4 does its weather system, because as it is the system adds less difficulty and more frustration.
On a not entirely unrelated note, the success rate for the Enigma cannon and the Shuttle in X5 is determined by a constant roll of RNG that only stops when the results screen shows after a stage is complete; because the save screen is shown AFTER the results screen, it means no matter how much you reload that save you will ALWAYS get that result of prolonging the inevitable/complete success [with the cannon] or success/Maverick Zero [with the Shuttle]. On unrelated matters, I think the Gaea Armour is actually pretty good with being quick-charging, the ability to stick to walls indefinitely, and the charged shot gives Mavericks/bosses drastically reduced I-frames. The Gaea Armour [Ultimate Armour notwithstanding] absolutely humps Gamma Sigma if you stick to the top of the right wall. The only real problem is getting the Gaea Armour comparatively later than the Falcon Armour, thereby inherently limiting its effectiveness. I used to be of the same opinion as Johnny until I made it a goal in one playthrough to get Gaea as soon as I could for use against as many Mavericks as possible. However that route is very, VERY restrictive due to having to die a lot AND still needing the Falcon Armour to get some of the parts.
Yeah, I do think the Gaea Armor's qualities are understated in general. The buster shreds through everything, and combined with the Auto Charge setting to get near instantaneous charge shots it's great on bosses. Unfortunately, the big problem is like stated the need for F Laser and the complete Falcon Armor for all but one part, at which point you'll hook on to the Falcon Armor as its utility of movement is generally more versatile than power and defense. I usually only pull out the Gaea Armor for the heart tanks only X can get but since I have to play X5 on Legacy Collection again I'll consider trying it out more.
+AmateurPsychologist The main issue that the Gaea Armor has is that you can't get it without beating every stage. As a result, the only place it can shine is the Sigma stages, and holy shit is it amazingly awful in the Quick Man stage, where you need to be as mobile as possible. It kicks Rangda Bangda W's ass, I'll give it that, but then you want to go naked to get the Ultimate Armor and then put that on forever to make the boss refights tolerable. You have to go out of your way to give it a route that gives it any screen time, and what's the point? The Shadow Armor is so much better, you definitely want to use that in every Gate stage, though remember to bring Jumper and Hyper Dash to Gate 2 to avoid getting stuck...
A lot of the important points of X4 and X5's story are hidden away in supplementary materials meant to explain the bits that didn't make sense. It's a shoddy way of doing it, but reading them makes the story so much more grim than you'd think. Also, as to why nobody just thinks to repair and rebuild Reploids: at some point, the series introduces the concept of Reploids having DNA and Souls. In effect, they *could* rebuild Iris...but it wouldn't actually be Iris anymore. ...yeah it doesn't make a whole lotta sense :|
I honestly believe the concept of control chips containing their personalities. you could rebuild a robot, but if it doesn't have that control chip, they will no longer have the same personality, and therefore will not be the same "person." Long story short, destroy Rock's control chip, and Rock dies.
@@esmooth919 It even goes further than that, when you stop to think about it. Sure, robots might not have "souls" as WE think of them, nor consciousness as we know it, but they still have minds. Minds that are based on electrical pathways like ours, only mechanical. Our neurons fire in certain patterns to recall knowledge and memories. If you destroyed a robot's AI core (control chip) and then soldered it back together, those pathways would change, thus irreparably changing their "personality" It's actually kinda sad when you think about it. As far as we know, robots would be impossible to bring back once destroyed.
@@Eye_Of_Odin978 unless they're controlled ship is intact amid the destruction. If a robot was completely obliterated, on the other hand, then yeah. They ded.
Even when I have a bad day, Johnny's always there to make it all better! P.S. I did a playthrough of X5 before and RNG was in my favor as the Enigma succeeded in destroying the colony, this was the same playthrough where I defeated the Shadow Devil with Zero, yes, I am insane doing something like that.
How would Johnny feel about a Diddy Kong Racing sequel that added characters from My Hero Academia, Little Witch Academia, Kirby, The Amazing World of Gumball, Persona 5, Family Guy, Crash Bandicoot and RWBY with Haruko from FLCL, Popuko and Pipmi from Pop Team Epic, Hat Kid, Bomberman, Beavis and Butthead also being there?
You can get some really good damage with Zero on each cycle if you get in the rhythm (3 C-Swords is a lot), the normal splits are easy to deal with thanks to the duck (something Johnny forgot about, actually) and you can easily end the fight if it transforms into the Wily Machine form thanks to Zero's insane damage. You're not insane. Devil bosses are rarely actually hard, they just seem that way because of the tedium associated with them.
Don’t you just hate it when your company completely derails the plot of the games you spent years of your life making because they like money too much? On a side note, I got the Mega Man X Legacy Collection two weeks ago and am currently trying to beat X4’s Sigma with Zero so I can move on to X5. REALLY tempted to switch to Rookie Hunter Mode, but I’d like to clear at least ONE game without have to resort to that at any point. EDIT: That bastard’s finally dead! I’d like to thank you all for believing in me, I really appreciate it!
I know the feeling of wanting to switch to rookie hunter, especially for a... rookie hunter like myself. I'm currently stuck on X1's sigma, but i haven't resorted to rookie hunter yet. Keep at it, you'll get it eventually!
I feel you I was tempted to use it in X 1 against the spider boss im using the switch version and sometimes my dash doesnt feel responsive but im trucking through im trying to get to x2, but I have to learn how to beat sigma without taking alot of damage and im avoiding videos to see how to beat them. Also im glad jhonny has warned me on x6 so I wont feel bad to cheat on it lol.
I feel you, but hang in there! There's actually some really good strategy videos on TH-cam for Zero vs. Sigma in X4, and it's actually pretty easy when you know the right tricks!
They did it twice which makes it even funnier. Zero was originally supposed to be found and repaired in Zero 1 if memory serves, which follows X5. Then they did X6 so Zero is just sleeping instead, but then they made X7 and included Zero.
@Drive Check. See, this is what the Archie Comics series did. I recall it working quite well in-universe, with only Ra Moon being able to circumvent this with Shadow Man.
Yeah, X6's translation is a bit of a disaster. A lot of the issues you had were simply translation errors... except for the three weeks thing, I think that was a typo on X5's end. Also, a Zero marathon? YEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSS!

Cant wait till he covers the MMZero series. Most satisfying gameplay in the series, coolest version of Zero, and most interesting part of the megaman timeline imo. Really wish it got ported to console so they could get more exposure. Ppl stayed overlooking portable series for Sonic/Castlevania/Megaman. Whining about not having any good recent titles in those series...when they were right there on gba. Also, shoutouts to unfair difficulty on X6 to pad out the game length
I am very curious what he thinks of the difficulty, story, and gameplay. I remember playing the games but the difficulty really irritated me along with some of the level designs. Maybe it was just me but as much I liked the designs of characters, the difficulty always turned me off.
@@35shadowthehedgehog i avoided MMZ1 in 2002 cause reviews said it was hard. Ninja Gaiden 2004 got me into difficult games though, so when i revisited MMZ1-2, they ended up being my favorite 2d platformers. And Toru Nakayama's art is great in MMZ. Cant wait to see his work in "Dragon Marked For Death".
@@35shadowthehedgehog I know that he does find the first two games (the only ones in the series he played) to be really hard, so that'll be fun to see him go over in a future review.
35shadowthehedgehog what are you talking about? Mmzero games become very easy thanks to elfs. You literally get buffs which let you live after you fall on spikes and pits, quadruple your health and so on.
@@HaohmaruHL Lots of people find the Zero series really hard, actually, particularly if you don't want to use Cyber Elves. I personally only think 2 is extremely hard w/out elves, but I think that's because Inti Creates games have this weird difficulty curve where the first time you play, the game is really hard, but the difficulty drops like a rock on repeated visits.
There *is* an actual explanation as to why characters like Zero and Iris can't just simply be rebuilt. This isn't explained in the games, but it is in other media like the Archie Mega Man comics and some manga. So, each robot has something called an I.C. Chip (Integrated Circuit). This is basically the brain that retains the personality of the robot. Zero's I.C. Chip miraculously survived in X1, which is why he was rebuilt in X2. Iris, meanwhile, had her I.C. Chip destroyed, so even though her body can be brought back, it won't be Iris completely. Still not sure how the hell Zero's I.C. Chip fucking survived in X6, but X6 is ass so who cares anyway?
"Still not sure how the hell Zero's I.C. Chip fucking survived in X6" He hid himself to repair himself. You don't need to understand more than that. None of us do. 😋
Was it actually copyright? I seem to recall that it was just a change done for the Legacy Collection because... well, it was odd in the first place. Assuming you're talking about the Mavericks having their names changed back to normal in X5. I could be mistaken, or it could've been a bad source, but it wouldn't surprise me. Some of them are silly names, though some of them work, like Axel the Red and Grizzly Slash.
12:43 Ha. Haha. Funny enough, that my first x5 playthrough. _THANKFULLY_ I thought ahead and went after the Gaia armor between stages by counting down with dynamo in mind, but _man_ did I hate hunting the heart capsules for it
TheNCSmaster it's longer than his Sons of Liberty review and THAT was longer than Guns of the Patriots Granted, he reviewed 2 games here, but holy shit
GusBus6Volt I use Johnny’s reviews to learn more about a lot of iconic series I haven’t played (which is a lot since I got into video games in my teenage years)
The way the enigma and shuttle RNG works in X5 is that the percentage for how likely it is to fail or not gets calculated on every result screen when you beat a Maverick. What this means is that you can still potentially get two different results even if you simply reload a save right before launching the shuttle/firing the cannon, but your chances of getting another outcome may still improve or decrease even more if you load an even earlier save and beat another maverick again to get another result screen to show up to recalculate your chances before making another attempt.
He is reviewing X6, possibly the worst X game outside of X7. I'd talk fast over a piece of shit like this too, especially if I have to play it for credibility
Why Iris can't be fixed might actually have an answer if the Classic series is taken into account. Robot Masters have something called a IC chip that houses their personality, as long as it is intact than they can be rebuilt without issue. However, if this chip is destroyed than the personality is destroyed as well, while the RM could be rebuilt, it wouldn't be the same person/RM. So if reploids are similar in make, Iris' IC chip could've been damaged in her battle with Zero.
Crystal Keyblade More like combining her and Colonel's chips fried her system, and effectively killed her from the inside out, because she basically blue screened.
Something I like about Johnny is that his videos, since i started watching them back at the start of his first zelda marathon, is that his videos have stayed consistent, and have not been overproduced. Other YT personalities that I watch have become so over written/produced, that they are just padding out the run time (The Completionist, Game Theory, Nostalgia Critic espesially). In this Topsy turvey world, its good to see people stay consistent with how they started, with the only things that change is the quality. You sir are one of the best out there because of this.
I think it's explained in X2 why they were able to bring Zero back. Dr. Cain mentioned he had his control chip and Sigma rebuilt his body. Not to mention Serges is heavily implied to have Wily's personality as he calls X "Light's creation" so Wily and Sigma would know how to rebuild his body and be compatible. So, it's possible they could say in X5 Zero's control chip is completely destroyed. But you know... X6

Iris was a unique case. She and her brother were supposed to be two 'halves' of a Perfect Warrior Reploid, so their Control Chips were interlinked. Iris went insane after her brother was killed because her chip desynced violently without Colonel's presence.
Why isn't this shit explained in the games?
I don't know, maybe they couldn't find a convenient moment to discuss it without breaking the pacing.
because the writing in hte games is a dumpster fire and many levels and all the actual lore is therefore relegated to outside material.
I'm not saying that the writing itself is garbage, but that it's management is.

Team Dusk That's IT!
Team Dusk i was missing that detail, thanks
Now that you said it, I think that's why Iris didn't come back.
This knowledge should be more widespread
Really the only reason why characters like Colonel, Iris, the General, Red, etc. couldn't be brought back they aren't (technically) bringing them back just letting their body's walk around.
I like how you ranted about X6 being impossible for unarmored X. HideOfBeast has a really good speedrun of Megaman X6 done through minimalist no-hit means, using powerups only at the two points where the game actually requires it.
Calling Megaman as a whole "his" is the exaggeration. Just adds to the long believed myth that Inafune is the "father" of MegaMan.
I feel it's also prudent to point out that Keiji himself had a history of going behind the backs of the execs and starting projects without their knowledge. So...
not quite sure how one does that exactly, but I guess two wrongs don't make a-
But then again Game creators aren't considered corporate in game companies
also considering the fact tha Inafune is also the father of Mighty number 9, also known as one the the worst kickstarter disasters of all time

I love Johnny's fast phased nature of these reviews, the fact he's able to talk so quickly while still conveying his opinions almost flawlessly is a pretty amazing feat in my opinion.
Or was he... Eating sugar?

The colony crashing into the planet reminds me too much of Sonic Adventure 2. Wait... The main heroes are blue, the bad guy has evil robots...
Don't forget the arguably-cooler "rival" character with red as a prominent color!
Don't think it stops there go play Megaman Zero 4 if you want more SA 2 comparisons (minus the blue hero part)
Gavin Carruth, there's no one like that in X series.
Gavin Carruth Who? Bass? He hardly overshadows Zero and/or Protoman.
Bass is a memetic loser whose only purpose in story is to get his ass handed to him by Megaman.

Next up in the lineup is X7. I can't wait to see what that'll be like.
Shout outs to that one Nightmare blocking the alt-path in Metal Shark Player's stage on Xtreme mode, in the middle of that crusher; easily the worst Nightmare in the game on Xtreme, and I never found a good, consistent way of dealing with it as Zero, though I'm now aware of an invincibility glitch that would just let you ignore it...
isn't zero usually the more difficult character to play in the X games?

Starscream91 I'm not a troll. Also, that was completely unnecessary, I was only helping improve their comment, since it actually confused me at first. No need to be a dick.

It wouldn't be so much an issue if it were a Metroidvania, but the X series is clearly not, so it doesn't work. Thanks for watching, man.
SomecallmeJohnny speaking of metroidvanias, have you ever played hollow knight? I'm sure you would at least enjoy it knowing that you like that genre

Next up is X 7. I can't wait to see what he thinks about it.

Why are the armor parts like this, Dr. Light?
“That’s a good question.”
HEEEEERE'S JOHNNY! It's been almost a month since the X4 review! Edit: Oh cool! I didn't expect you to review the Xtreme games! Great review by the way, Johnny! lol.
The X6 story was still better than X5's story.
Johnny says Megaman 4 abuses spikes but damn look at Megaman 9...
At least it's fair. There aren't *that* many spikes in MM9.

Check out Nico Evaluates. People who say Mega Man 4 is unfair are lying out of their arses.
British Media Bully I find it funny though how the very first level he plays starts off with a surprise-motherfucker enemy in a death pit.
British Media Bully yeah, i think act 4 and onwards in mega man 2’s endgame fortress is worse. At least mega man 4 lets you grind for ammo if you need to, or at least gives you some restores and doesn’t force you to empty your special weapons for specific parts of the castle.
"WHERE IS ZERO?
WHERE IS MY ZERO!?"
I guess Nightmare Zero is not only a Yandere, but he's also into selfcest.
The whole Sigma leaving X when he could have easily killed him is a Japanese culture thing, it doesn't make sense to us in the west because we have a different moral mindset when it comes to war/battling
Mickspad yeah I saw it as Sigma respecting zero's sacrifice.
Dude's insane and shouldn't give a shit if Zero takes a bullet for X.
Zaruian I'm not denying that, I'm just giving the viewpoint the writers probably had
Oh boy, X7 is going to give him a migraine and a half, isn't it?
He'd be lucky if he ONLY got a headache.
Well at least after all of that, there’ll be X8 and hopefully Command Mission.
Keiji Johnson Well, he did say he planned on ending the marathon with Command Mission, so...
I saw Projareds review of X7 and I can't wait to see what Johnny has to say about it!

@@tracyndiyob162 Well, gotta force an emotional moment for Zero somehow, right?
@@_V.Va_ guess so,just kinda wish they did it better.(considering maverick hunter x/powered up was going to adapt the rest of the series maybe they could've introduced characters early to give more time with them which i think was iris's main problem compared to zero's other interest.)
[BURN TO THE GROUND]
We are almost there!
Please no
25:43 So MegaMan X6 inspired Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance?
It all makes sense now!
How odd. The guy who did the All Inclusive MMX Retrospective apparently got a different result when he reloaded his save.
Someone should make a fan animation of Zero going through the process of 'hiding and repairing' himself.
If you destroyed a robot's AI core (control chip) and then soldered it back together, those pathways would change, thus irreparably changing their "personality"
It's actually kinda sad when you think about it.
Shiro-Luna Kudos to you my friend!
I guess that means Johnny sucks

Gave me trauma thinking of all those deathtraps in X6. I remember renting it from blockbuster and using the cheat code as well. Good Times!

@Drive Check. Exactly. Without the control chip, they have completely lost their soul, for lack of a better term
@Drive Check. See, this is what the Archie Comics series did. I recall it working quite well in-universe, with only Ra Moon being able to circumvent this with Shadow Man.
@Drive Check. So essentially, they're zombies by that point.
Yeah, X6's translation is a bit of a disaster. A lot of the issues you had were simply translation errors... except for the three weeks thing, I think that was a typo on X5's end.
Also, a Zero marathon? YEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSS!
A bit is an understatement.
17:09 it looked like zero had a sezure
Because of you "WHAT AM I FIGHTING FOR?!!!??! " is stuck in my head. Thanks Johnny lol 😂😂😂
Well that certainly came out of left field
1:10 anybody else thought dirty thoughts when they saw this image of Keji?
Am I missing out because ive never played a Megaman game?
Floesion
Dr Light: That’s a good question. LOL
Floesion hell yeah play megamanx. It's the best mega man game that's not 7 or 2
Ye

2 sucks, play 4, 5, 6 and skip 8
*Duff McWhalen* is prehaps the greatest name in the history of anything ever.
Too bad its not in the legacy collection
Because Zero is fucking powerful. I'm pretty sure there's no other explanation.
"Still not sure how the hell Zero's I.C. Chip fucking survived in X6"
He hid himself to repair himself. You don't need to understand more than that. None of us do. 😋
Zero's IC chip survived because Dr. Wily made his ultimate creation out of Nintendium.
Riley Long Nintendium and Nokium are both weak to water, but a 10,000 feet drop or a steamroller driving over them, and they're not even scratched.
Oh, so it's the robot equivalent to a soul! Okay that makes sense. I figured it was something like that.
Copyright kills all the fun. Atleast Jojo managed to get away with some of it.
Good ol' Deadly Queen
Jakku! What about shining diamond?
Dont forget Flaccid Pancake an filthy acts done at a reasonable price
I think the PS1 X5 Maverick names made sense, since Mega Man has had music references since the first game. Rock, Roll, Rush, Bass. It's kinda clever.
12:43 Ha. Haha.
Funny enough, that my first x5 playthrough.
_THANKFULLY_
I thought ahead and went after the Gaia armor between stages by counting down with dynamo in mind, but _man_ did I hate hunting the heart capsules for it
Holy crap! This might be the longest videos since the 3D Sonic Marathon!
TheNCSmaster *50 minute Sonic 06' review*
TheNCSmaster it's longer than his Sons of Liberty review and THAT was longer than Guns of the Patriots
Granted, he reviewed 2 games here, but holy shit
I was just rewatching the Castlevania reviews thanks to Smash when I saw this in my notifications.
GusBus6Volt I went back to the Castlevania reviews also because of Simon and Richter in Smash
Johnny's Rondo of Blood review is literally the only reason I know of Richter's existence before Smash.
GusBus6Volt I use Johnny’s reviews to learn more about a lot of iconic series I haven’t played (which is a lot since I got into video games in my teenage years)
Did he actually cover the whole series?
He mostly did the classics up until Symphony of the Night.
Is it just me or is Johnny talking really fast?
It's like he was possesed by the ghost of the lovechild of Ben Shapiro and John Moschitta Jr.
I actually checked to make sure the video wasn't running at 1.5 speed.
@@horaciosi ?
@@evanwitke6534 I figured that. I was asking whom are they?
TheSwordsman100 Yet unlike most other robots when Iris died her body was still completely intact so... How did her chip het damaged?
Emotional and physical stress causing the chip to short circuit?
Crystal Keyblade More like combining her and Colonel's chips fried her system, and effectively killed her from the inside out, because she basically blue screened.
I can't believe I just imagined Iris's eyes showing the blue screen of death
15:27 "Zero is on Death's Door!
+24 Stress
HEART ATTACK
DEATHBLOW!"
(for those who dont understand, this is a darkest dungeon reference)
37:36 Roasting Clement, Johnny?
Johnny used fire wave
16:32 Actually in one of these games it’s implied that rebuilding reproid that have been already destroyed are illegal
So Zero is breaking the law?
Which is stupid
"Perfect and the strongest reploids" sounds like it would make a great name for a band.
Holy crap Johnny wasnt kidding about the length!
8:26 oh man that line, I thought it was about something else haha
Lmfao
Johnny was talking about clement at the end.
Of all the retro review guys out there, I f***ing adore you and this channel. Thank you.
Johnny: Do you remember Dynamo? The fuck happened to him?
*Datsa good question*
