8 ranks pretty high in my favorite Megaman games. I just have too much nostalgia for it since it was my introduction to the classic series. The overall presentation is just amazing and such a delight to the ears. The game is definitely at it's the best when it comes to the last 4 robot masters.
It's interesting, most people are nostalgic for the other games, and mm8 is so different that is harshes their nostalgic buzz. That's a cool perspective that you're nostalgic about 8. Are the other games a little disappointing since they're so different? Totally agree, the last 4 robot masters are excellent.

One thing I find interesting, is that I picture Mega Man to look closer to Mega Man 8 than Mega Man 7. He just doesn't look right in Mega Man 7, and how Mega Man's sprite looks in this game looks like how Mega Man looks in the RockMan 4-6 covers.
That super refined animation and sluggish movement was just sort of a thing during the PSX era, I feel. There isn't as much of that in X4, but I've always preferred how the original NES and X games on SNES played. Much tighter controls.
I have such mixed feelings about it. Even since reviewing it, my opinion has changed. I love the music, the art, and some of the exploration added to the game design. Overall, I think it's a good game.
The one thing I loved about MM8 is that it utilized using boss weapons really well when it came to interactivity. And even if you didn't have the weapon from among the 4 in the section, it didn't hinder advancement of the level.
Mega Man 8 is my absolute favorite game in the series, and it's a top 5 game overall for me. I grew up with the Anniversary Collection and I loved playing every single game, and 8 was my favorite and the one I went back to the most in my childhood. I have distinct memories of watching the intro cutscene where it shows the montage of Mega Man fighting many of the robot masters from the previous games with that epic anime art style and music, and watching my older cousin playing the game, fighting Duo. It can't be overstated how much joy this game brings me, even if it wasn't the first Mega Man game I decided to play out of the bunch. It's colorful, has great music, beautifully animated cutscenes, and is just a blast to play every time, even if it is arguably the easiest game in the series.
To touch on what you were saying about the loading mid level. It gives the stage a certain sense of disconnection if you will. Obviously old hardware was a factor but the problem remains even on todays consoles which is what bothers me.
I think nostalgia clouds my judgement a lot because MM8 is my favorite of the classic series, but everything you said in this review feels fair. The only thing I disagree with is the sound clips, but that's subjective and I'm weird in that regard. I love the stupid boss lines and bad reads. "I'm Aquaman, but you can call me handsome guy" is GOAT for me.
For better voice acting, Rockman 8 is better. If only it was subbed, then it would've been a lot more accessible. I played through Rockman 8 without a memory card and mastered all the levels (except the Wily ones, I guess). I also had to guess through menu navigation especially buying your power-ups. The rockball is kind of a cheat because you can use it for jumps while on the air. The timing needs to be mastered though but in my case, since my X button was pressing by itself, MegaMan automatically just jumps on the ball. It is my first MegaMan game that I got to play through myself (I only got to watch others play the earlier ones). I definitely have a soft spot for it. Then I played MegaMan 3 and was shocked at how far the gameplay was. So yeah, I do agree that 8 is slow but like how I tried to adapt to the earlier ones, you just have to adapt to the tempo of the game, I guess.
Yeah, it's an emotional roller coaster. There are so many things I love about the mm franchise that this game totally fumbles, but I love the overall music and the vibe of mm8. Some days I feel like I love this game, other days I don't........
They missed the polish that makes a non-clunky game and making the player's intuition work for them. It is not intuitive to see a bunch of what looks like enemies be at the bottom and they don't hurt you but then later have the same thing happen.
I feel the same way. This game is full of detail and the attempt to constantly wow the player with new ideas and technical showcases is admirable on paper, but the end result ends up being cool to look at, but not that fun to play. However I'm glad they had the opportunity to make those mistakes with this title, because the director of megaman 11 claimed that thanks to 8's approach to its design he's learned that style shouldn't take priority over the gameplay. So, hats off to capcom for learning from their mistakes and making better games with experience
I didn't know that about Mega Man 11. Good for them for figuring it out! I guess all is well that ends well. I feel like a little more play testing and design time could've saved this game. The second batch of robot masters is significantly better and doesn't have any weird auto scrolling stuff, so you can tell the designers were figuring out what works.
Sounds more like that was to mega man 11’s detriment seeing as how they played that game so safe it ended up being the most bland mainline mega man game.
It's funny. Upon release, the more gimmicky parts of the levels were extremely frustrating. But after getting use to everything (over the years😅), it became one of the easiest MegaMan games for me.
3:49 that was until Mega Man & Bass Reused the Assets from 8 visually and 7 in terms of sound effects. And in terms of the Rocket Boarding Sections, Those Indicators also have a small secret that's meant to help the user Jump or slide perfectly, which is when the Light Flashes and you are more towards the left middle of the screen.
I like the cheesy voice acting and Dr.Wahhh Wiiii but man this Bullet Hell Moments, Duck Duck Jump Stage and the Clown Stage, really frustrated me. I damn appreciate your reviews😃
The voice acting is bad because capcom got a bunch of Japanese guys who could barely speak English to voice act in English and apparently they didn’t do retakes
I played this game in the original Japanese on the Sega Saturn and the voice acting was actually pretty good. I can’t understand how Capcom could have chosen such bad English language voice actors. Another bonus of the JP Saturn version were the two optional bosses Woodman and Cutman
As an artist myself, Breath of Fire 4 sprite works are legendary that are tested of timeless classic. Megaman 8 sprites art are fine, is not the best but is better than 7 and the best looking original megaman game of this writing
I like Mega Man 8 well enough as something you play through for being part of the series and if it wasn't a Mega Man game, it could've been an OK platformer. For me, I consider it to be the "black sheep" of the series. That oddball game that's there that just doesn't jive with the rest of the series. It's like Mega Man 8 is to the classic series as Zelda 2: The Adventures of Link is to the Zelda series. It's that one game in the series where, while still fun, is where they went odd places. I also liked the level of detail in the stages and appreciated the risks they took even though it never panned out. Though I think they made it rain mets with dozens of them for you to shoot just to say they didn't have the old number of sprites on screen limit anymore. That with all the toys and other moving things on screen, I think they were overcompensating for the lack of sprites they could have on screen before and it felt too "busy" for me. I think the shortcomings of the bad voice acting combined with really annoying level mechanics (jump jump slide slide) make this game one plays just to cross off the list for plaything through the series. The OK platformer that you play once, have a decent time with it, and then almost never go back to it. Lore wise, this game is pretty important with the evil energy in it, but it's pretty clear that Capcom didn't put the same effort into the lore for this game that they put into the Breath of Fire games. I didn't like the power ball. It was like they were saying, "Remember that soccer game we made? We have a ball you can kick." It was lame. I almost never used it. I did like the soccer game, but never liked the power ball. I also didn't like the Rush abilities either. They just didn't feel right to me compared to how much fun they were in the previous games. I liked the shooter stages a lot. They were out of place here, but I feel like if they expanded on that idea they could've done a lot more with it and maybe even do a spin-off game with it that is a regular shooter that could switch between flying with Rush Jet and maybe some underwater levels with Rush Marine. Opportunity wasted there as they could've gone some really cool places with robot masters and stages for such a game. With Bass and Treble they could've done two player co-op, two ways to play with different abilities, or have you do an aerial battle with him and you still could've gotten weapons to use from bosses.
I'm basically on the same page as you. I've never played the soccer game, but you're the first person I've ever heard say anything good about it. I love the idea of a Mega Man shmup, but I feel like it's just too easy and slow here. Capcom collaborated with Cave to release ProGear in 2001. I wish they had done something like this for a Mega Man shmup. If you like shmups, Pro Gear is only $1 or $2 for Capcom Arcade Stadium.
I want to like this game but the Jetboard levels ruin it for me. I’ve beaten the hardest classic Megaman games many times (9, Megaman & Bass, Dr Wily’s Revenge, etc) but I’ve never been able to finish 8 because of those auto scrollers. Even if you beat that part, you also have to fight that awful boss, and unlike the easy as hell robot masters, if you game over YOU HAVE TO DO THE JETBOARD SECTION AGAIN! Some say the Anniversary collection ruined the controls, but I played the Japanese Saturn version and it’s just as bad. Not to mention, most of the level design is too gimmicky and just repeats the same enemies over and over again. It’s sad that my favorite levels (Swordman and Grenademan) also have annoying moments. The weapons aren’t very interesting either; Grenade man’s weapon is super OP, and swordsman’s weapon is fun, however the rest are nothing special. One day in the future, I would love to see Capcom try to make a better game with this colorful anime artstyle, but for now, I guess I’ll just stick with Megaman X4.
Oh yeah, the jetboard level at the end was BRUTAL! I'm not kidding, it probably took over 100 tries. I totally agree, I'd love to see capcom try another mega man game with this art style.
I really liked MM8. The ball thing was super fun, even if I sucked at the game. I just didn't have enough play time in it compared to other games, since I pretty much only finish games based on memorization
Hot take here but I think 8 has the best cut scene of all. Even better than X's. Too bad the rest of the game doesn't keep up with the superb quality of that epic, memorable intro level.
I will say you probably used the word "cool" maybe 40 times in a 2 minute section of the video near the part with the green devil lol. Otherwise I agree with most of this. I put 8 ahead of 7 but it is nostalgia based and I think it's a better overall game as far as "stuff" not necessarily level design or bosses, just better bells and whistles for me. But I've always underplayed this game for the same reason with mega man 7. I got Mega Man x4 and Mega Man 8 basically 3 weeks from each other and Mega Man X4 is just so much better as a whole it's not even fair. Same with Mega Man X vs 7. X is just obviously better. I don't feel that way about Mega Man 1-6 or 9/10 vs the X games. Just 7 and 8. & Bass is a major improvement to these two imo as you'll probably see.
Ha ha! Yeah, I should probably expand my vocabulary. That's really interesting that you played this game so close to x4. I've barely played x4. I have it on a collection, and I played it a little bit when reviewing 8 to see how it would feel if I played these games when they where new. I could totally understand someone feeling like x4 is way better. Did you play them back to back when they were released, in the 90s? Mega Man and Bass is so strange to me. I borrowed it from a friend on gba for a road trip, and I HATED it! Now I hear all the time how bad that port is. I'm probably gonna finish the classic series and some x games before Mega Man and Bass, but I'm excited to get to it when I get to it.
@@MeguhFan yeah I played them as a child the christmas/mybirthday year they were released, I had 5 PS1 games for a year+ and those were 2 of them. Mega Man & Bass is the next game in the classic series technically. I'd look at Mega Man V for the gameboy as well as a little side quest because it's the hidden gem you are looking for.
Mega Man 8 is a game that forgot what Mega Man feels like. Not a single stage in the game besides Grenade Man's stage and Wily 3 feels like Mega Man. They all have over the top gimmicks and puzzle element which does not belong in Mega Man. The stages themselves lack enemy diversity. The same 5 or 6 enemies repeat over and over again. The weapon balance is terrible for that reason because there aren't a lot enemies you can try weapons on. There are a few positive things here and there. Bosses in this game are good and the music is great. Neither of this is saying a lot Mega Man that has to be expected with Mega Man 8. It is still not a terrible game, just a game that made some big mistakes. I would say play Mega Man 8 if you want to but absolutely avoid it if you get easily offended (Looking at you Nico Thulin) . 3.8 /10 Edit: I will not be commenting on Bosses this time. Out of all mainline games, I have my experience on Mega Man 8 the least. I have only played this game start to finish less that 10 times.
Right now I am doing a full Mega Man Marathon (without BN, Starforce, and Legends though) and I am currently on Mega Man 8. Personally, I think it's better than Mega Man 4, 5, 6, and 2 even though I grew up with 2. The weapons are creative, the bosses are fun, the animation is fluent and great, and I love story and cutscenes. I don't really have that many issues with the game besides Wily Tower 1, and yes, they called the wily castle the Wily Tower like in Mega Man: The Wily Wars. I think people really underestimate this game when it comes to both classic MM and MM in general, which gives this game a bad look in the series. I think most people who say this game is bad are intensely wrong because 5 is weirder and is a worse game compared to Mega Man 8. This is kinda random, but i'd like to share my Mega Man (Classic) ranking. 12. Mega Man 5 11. Mega Man & Bass 10. Mega Man 6 9. Mega Man 2 8. Mega Man 4 7. Mega Man 9 6. Mega Man 11 5. Mega Man 10 4. Mega Man (1) 3. Mega Man 8 2. Mega Man 7 1. Mega Man 3 Reply to this comment and give me your Mega Man 8 opinions, and MM Classic rankings.
I will never understand why people call this the “black sheep” of the series but like 7, 8 is one of the best, 7 is the weaker one with mediocre level design easy bossies and annoyingly large sprites that sometimes make it hard scale your jumps on top of spikes everywhere in all levels and all the weapons in 7 suck. 8 is far better than 7 with better level designed, bosses, and weapons.
Hmmmm...I don't think 8 is bad compared to other platformers in general, I just didn't like it as much as the other games in the classic series. I preferred 7. I thought the level design was better because of all the cool secrets and the added challenge. I my review of 7, I address the larger sprite size, and I describe it as getting used to threading a needle, and once I got used to it I really liked 7. 8 definitely has some positives, but overall I feel like the weird stuff (snowboarding, shmup levels), the couple of weird graphic moments that make it more challenging, and the voices held it back. But, I also understand how 8 could be someone's favorite in the series.

LOL YOU WANT MEGA MAN 8 TWO, you get your wish
@@robmoore3176 Wow! That's cool. I got a n64 as a kid, so I missed 8 and x4, but I later played x5 and legends.
That felt good
Mega Man 8 is a game that forgot what Mega Man feels like.
Edit: I will not be commenting on Bosses this time. Out of all mainline games, I have my experience on Mega Man 8 the least. I have only played this game start to finish less that 10 times.
Yeah, the gimmicks really weigh this one down. I like this game more and more looking back, but it's still a step down from the rest of the classics.

It is perfect
I agree, 8 isn't the greatest but its far better than 7. MM7 seems slower and can't jump.
@@markbelin9869 I got used to the movement in MM7, but I understand why some people couldn't get past it.
Peak
8 is best you need to play fortnite kid.
