gregnes2000 Also Mario keeps the same gameplay styles, takes what didn't work & change it so it does work, Instead of throwing it all away & just starting from square one over & over, Sonic needs to stop doing that & actually focus on something & make it more fun.
gregnes2000 Well that's why. Sonic doesn't try to improve anything, he just does goes back to square one over & over again instead of honing what people already loved. It's true if Sega just stuck to the Adventure formula they'd be able to refine it & all his games would still be rivaling Mario. That doesn't mean ALL his games would have to only be Classic & Adventure, Like Mario he could still make many spin off games for something new ever once in a while but he needs to really stop going back to the drawing board after every game.
gregnes2000 with Mario it was a lot easier to transform into 3-D it was a plat-former with some power ups in there but with sonic there physics and momentum and also speed to consider. Plus Nintendo is just better at changing things than Saga its always been that way.
gregnes2000 TBH it's just bias BS, Sonic Adventure was Sonic's first 3d game and it was great, in fact I hold it in as high regard as I do with Mario 64. Sonic's issue is that the games from Heros-2006 controlled poorly so people started to say all 3d Sonic games control badly and the hedgehog had a poor jump to 3d. I actually think that he had one of the better jumps to the 3rd dimension compared to most platformers making the transition.

Can’t believe this video is almost 6 years old, that’s crazy I remember watching it the day it came out and being really excited for the other reviews in this marathon
Ah, such nostalgia. It seems like just yesterday that I was tearing my hair out in skydeck and crapping myself at the sheer awesomeness of windy valley. In fact, I think I'm gonna indulge my inner child for a bit and play me some DX. Nice work, Johnny.
Johnny, I have seen your old videos a million times and still do. Thank you for putting your dedication to making this amazing content. We even have our same favorite games.
I have no idea why, but I always loved the hell out of E-102's story and his manner of play. I thought his storyline, even though Gamma is barely connected to the overall plot, did a great job of explaining something always missing from the Sonic games: What the animals inside the robots feel like, or if they're able to control the robots themselves. Gamma may have only been in the plot by tertiary circumstances (E-102 was only connected to the overall plot by Eggman and Amy, of which Amy was really just secondary due to events between Eggman and Sonic, but Gamma would up going Maverick because of the little bird's/Amy's influence) but I thought he had the most character development in a game completely devoid of it, and the combination of music and animations during the cutscene after Gamma destroys Beta and falls itself is probably the best scene in the whole entire game, in my opinion.
Better experience and better handling. The way Sonic moves and handles in this game is fantastic. The wonky controls kinda mess it up a bit, but it still feels like a dream. I hope they bring back this feel for how Sonic controls and perfect it. It's nearly Classic Sonic gameplay in 3D.
29:00 I've seen this review several times and keep coming back to it for good reason. Can we talk about the absolute genius editing skills Johnny had even at this point? This transition into covering DX is honestly phenomenal and hilarious as hell.
I freaking loved Gammas stages. Shooting in a Sonic game was almost the best thing ever for me back then. I hated Bigs stages, mostly because I don't like fishing.
The only stage I disliked, besides Big and E-102 Gamma, was Lost World for Sonic. My favorite level is Twinkle Park I wish that they chose that one for Sonic Generations. I've always wondered what they'd do with that level. Instead, the fans opted for another city level.
chimanruler15 I appreciate the fact it is short, not making us have to sit through it. (If you are a fan Big's story then I'm sure you did not like this) We only get one Big boss fight, in which you have limited control.
Abdel Hassan To make her better and more fun to play as. Would you rather Amy just be the same way she was in Sonic Adventure? Slow speed, only one attack (Piko Hammer), and no real part in the story? No one wants another "Big the Cat" type character who has no real bearing on the story!
Like all characters in the Sonic series, SEGA seems to have a hard time adding in extra characters without messing up the gameplay. Look at 06 and Boom, for the most part of those games Sonic is really the only good character that doesn't screw up the flow of the game.
Make her like she was in Sonic Advance. She lacks a spin dash and can't hurt enemies by jumping on them, but she has a varied moveset that's excellent for speedrunning. She can long jump, slide, attack with her hammer for a one-two combo or extra aerial range, attack below with a whirling slam, perform an amazingly useful super jump with her hammer, etc. She doesn't need to be a clonehog, she's already had a useful moveset for years; it's just that SEGA kind of... Forgot.
Best game ever made. People bash big, amy, and gamma, but while they weren't as fun as the classic trio, they helped build the world. Seeing the same epic story from so many points of view. Especially gamma showing some behind the scenes with eggman and showing the emotional ramifications of his animal abuse. And big, just wanting his friend back having no idea what is going on as he is pulled into the rich or the plot events. It really made the world feel entries and real, and really showed for investment in the characters.
Shadow Generations has compelled me to return to this wonderful marathon. Adventure 1 remains my favourite Sonic game. It has great levels, fantastic music, memorable set pieces, and story moments I remember clear as day. It holds up very well for me and I enjoy this game immensely.
While I do agree the Dreamcast versions had better lighting and scenery, they might have changed it because in their mind that was how they originally wanted it but hardware restrictions didn't allow it. Like that Tornado, notice its all black in the Dreamcast version but shows the background in Gamecube version; Seems to me they put the black because hardware restrictions didn't allow that draw distance.
man this video is eleven years old now, i remember keeping up with this marathon as a kid and nowadays i can rewatch this and get multiple goosebumps when i hear johnny praise this game
"I cant take the name Eggman seriously" oh yes. Of course. Cause hes such a serious, dramatic character that is intended to be taken seriously and not a silly cartoon villain at all, here in the blue hedgehog chili dog games.

I still remember watching this video for the 1st time and waiting for you to upload the rest of the games. I didn’t realize how long ago this was. I must say Johnny that you have came a very long way and I believe you that you are a very underrated youtuber my friend. Your review are just perfect, they make me laugh until I fall out the chair. Thank you for making my late childhood a joy.
I believe it’s because TH-cam introduced members only and paid content, Johny’s channel might have some paid content somewhere, which makes the other videos show the free tag so you know they aren’t paid.
Hello! I found you through GameTheory, and I'm so happy to find someone that thoroughly reviews Sonic games, i.e. MY WHOLE CHILDHOOD I thought your review was fascinating and I'm excited to watch your other videos as well. It sucks that you're not big on the sidequests and other features aside from the main game, but different strokes for different folks. The chao garden was basically my life, really, at least in SA2B. I feel that the chao garden is what brought me back to the SADX and SA2B the most, especially since the chao garden took a different save slot, so you could start an entirely new game but still keep your progress with your little angelic cuties. I have always preferred SA2 more than SA, but that was the first 3D sonic game I was REALLY introduced to and I enjoyed the stages (and characters) far more. Guess you know what I'm watching next! But seriously chao are the best
29:54 - 30:01 I should clarify that the Game Gear games are only unlockable in the original GameCube version of Sonic Adventure DX and the 2004 PC version, and while they remained in the code of the XBLA/PSN/Steam re-release, they cannot be accessed without hacking the game.
Is it just me, or does anyone else think that Sonic moves faster in Adventure 1 than Adventure 2? Here, I feel like I'm going fast. In Adventure 2, I just feel like I'm moving sluggish.
+Hector Gonzalez Yeah Adventure 1 was faster, He might of been slippery but I prefer the speed. You get used to the slippiness though didn't really bother me that much.
This was the video that got me into the entire SGB BSC and SCMJ verse. And also made my long standing tradition of using a channel's Sonic Adventure content as a benchmark for their quality. I dont do it at much today but its crazy to see the first Sonic Marathon all have videos with over millions of views. I miss this era of content
Damn I can't believe this video is now 10 years old. I still remember watching this video on my awful Acer Aspire One back when this video was first uploaded.
In case anyone was wondering what the hell Sega was thinking regarding Big the Cat, he exists for two reasons: - Sega thought they needed a character who would break up the action. He definitely does *that*; he's a big, fat roadblock in the way of the action. - A fishing rod peripheral was created for another Dreamcast game, _Sega Bass Fishing._ Sega thought it would boost the peripheral's sales if they tied it into their biggest launch title, _Sonic Adventure._ While I don't know if that was the case, the peripheral is actually usable in Big's stages. Medium-length story short, Big was created to break up the action and to sell you on a fishing controller.
I think the actual reason Gamma has a time limit is because he has some kind of battery that constantly loses its charge and it's stimulated by some shock from the gun to keep it going.
I'm playing Sonic Adventure and Sonic Generations now because of Johnny, and being a person who never really got into Sonic back in the day... it seems pretty nice. I'm not really trained for high-speed platforming and don't have nostalgia factor, but what these games have certainly is fun. Johnny's right, the game is not for everyone, but Sonic Adventure is a great title for just kicking back and enjoying something fast-paced and quick to play.
+Icare He's just very critical when it comes to game design and Sonic's weakest aspect is the game design. I don't personally think his opinions are completely justified but for the most part I think he brings up good points. And he doesn't think his "opinions are god" like the other guy said. Just look at how he talks about Ocarina. He's always saying how anyone can love the game and that's fine. Sonic isn't perfect. In fact, it's pretty flawed. Arin just kinda looks at it as glass half empty rather than glass half full.
SuperLycanlord Arin: HAHAHAHAHAHAH! THIS GAMES SO BAD! LOOK AT THE CUTSCENES! DON'T THEY LOOK AWFUL! THIS GAME ITS ALMOST LIKE IT WAS MADE IN 1998! (Arin keeps falling off windy valley on purpose). HEHEHEHEH! THIS GAME IS SOOOOOOO BROKEN! EVERYBODY LOOK AT ME! LAUGH AT ME! I'M THE MESSIAH OF GAMING! I DECIDE! I SPEAK FOR MIYAMOTO AND KOJIMA! Jon: Now wait just a minute-. (Replaces Jon with Dan). Arin: YOU WERE SAYING! Dan: (Oh shit I don't know anything about Sonic. Ugh). YEAH ARIN! HAHAHAHAH! THIS GAME DOES SUCK! PROBABLY WORSE THEN BOOM! Arin: PROBABLY! DAN: UGH NO IT IS! (They both yuck it up together).
+Colby's Meme Graveyard I hate seeing all those reviews that hate SA1 and 2 because they aren't completely sonic based. I can see why, but if the modes are done well (which is the case imo), why complain?
+Tjeu van Boxtel "why complain?" Because some people (like myself) hate the different modes. I can't stand the treasure hunting and the fishing stages. All the others are ok, but it's still not sonic
Kylee The Youkai I meant sonic as in the spirit of sonic; what makes a sonic game a sonic game. All the other modes in the adventure games don't give me that vibe and it's not fun for me either
Sonic Adventure was the last Sonic game that had classic titles feel in it, you can see lot of Difficult platforming and lovely casinos, underwater, shields ... etc, too bad modern Sonic games became all about boost to win.
Fun fact: the Chao Garden actually got me into the Sonic franchise. Saw a friend playing with the Chao at her house, and I wanted the game so badly- only to discover that there was a whole lot more to the game than I thought!

Sonic Adventure doesn't need a remake. It's just fine the way it is. :D
Elchronic Maelstrom They haven't had HD remakes.
i want a full remake.
a FULL remake.
Elchronic Maelstrom Exactly
"Lost world is... ok, but nothing mind blowing" the sentence used to describe level, and game.
Between the Adventure games, I think SA1 is the better experience.
Indeed
Fullmetal Hunter Don't even get me started on that one.... Lol.
Fullmetal Hunter Very little, but some. Hell, some people are still calling 06 the best game ever (And not being sarcastic about it!)
Fullmetal Hunter Oh yeah?
29:00 I've seen this review several times and keep coming back to it for good reason. Can we talk about the absolute genius editing skills Johnny had even at this point? This transition into covering DX is honestly phenomenal and hilarious as hell.
I’m sure any decent editor could do that as well.
Gamma's stages are okay, Big's stages are horrid, and Amy's stages leave a lot to be desired.
I had few problems with the rest of the levels.
If you are not trying to get every emblem/upgrade bigs story is pretty easy
Macboy Games ...if you can deal with the controls.
chimanruler15 I appreciate the fact it is short, not making us have to sit through it. (If you are a fan Big's story then I'm sure you did not like this) We only get one Big boss fight, in which you have limited control.
12 years is crazy
I really hope they bring back Amy as a playable character, but make her faster and give her the spin dash, damn it!
So make her another Sonic clone? Like Shadow? Why?
Abdel Hassan To make her better and more fun to play as. Would you rather Amy just be the same way she was in Sonic Adventure? Slow speed, only one attack (Piko Hammer), and no real part in the story? No one wants another "Big the Cat" type character who has no real bearing on the story!
+Don05 Or she could just not be in the game at all...
It really made the world feel entries and real, and really showed for investment in the characters.
nope this game sucks ass from a straw
+Crono Strife Not really...
Yes really
Crono Strife Nope.
Yup
I don't care what anyone says, this is probably my favorite sonic game!
Unleashed is way better but sa1 is still a good game tho.
Xcalibur64 no way, sonic heroes is better!
Sonic 06 is way better!
Xcalibur64 how???
Xcalibur64 woah woahhh easy there boy, did you say.... Better graphics?
This is more important than ever, what with the Grumps playing Sonic Adventure DX.
Nyew nyewnyew nyewnyew
"seriously 1 third of the stage is sonic climbing up a tornado, video game logic at its finest ladies and gentlemen" XDD
Shadow Generations has compelled me to return to this wonderful marathon.
Adventure 1 remains my favourite Sonic game. It has great levels, fantastic music, memorable set pieces, and story moments I remember clear as day. It holds up very well for me and I enjoy this game immensely.
Fishing in a Sonic game is just like doing yoga in Grand Theft Auto 5.
Or a cooking simulation in Call of Duty.
Cooking? In Call of Duty? Which one?
While I do agree the Dreamcast versions had better lighting and scenery, they might have changed it because in their mind that was how they originally wanted it but hardware restrictions didn't allow it.
Like that Tornado, notice its all black in the Dreamcast version but shows the background in Gamecube version; Seems to me they put the black because hardware restrictions didn't allow that draw distance.
I feel like this game needs to have a remake built from the ground up.
Yeah, Imagine perfect chaos with realistic water physics. Shit I get chills just thinking about it.
+TeamMachine especially the Sonic Adventure 2 treasure hunting stages they were fine in adventure 1 but seriously fuck them up in Adventure 2
+TeamMachine that would be much better seriously the radar in Adventure 2 sucks
Every remake should be made from the ground op in my opinion.
+Jonn Rainey SA2 has better treasure hunting stages than SA1 imo.
man this video is eleven years old now, i remember keeping up with this marathon as a kid and nowadays i can rewatch this and get multiple goosebumps when i hear johnny praise this game
13:48 how those words come true later in the sonic series.
20:07 What's wrong with yellow? Is Johnny a member of the Green Lantern Corps?
***** Kappa lantern corp master race
P.S. Black Lantern Corp is master race
"I cant take the name Eggman seriously" oh yes. Of course. Cause hes such a serious, dramatic character that is intended to be taken seriously and not a silly cartoon villain at all, here in the blue hedgehog chili dog games.
These Sonic videos are still some of the best written and most concise gaming reviews on TH-cam, still great all these years later
OH MY GOD I FREAKED OUT WHEN YOU SHOWED EVOLUTION. I've never met another gamer who's heard of it
Sonic Adventure was an awsome game, definitely one of my top favorite 3D Sonic games. My other favorites are Sonic Heroes and Sonic Adventure 2.
Have you ever played Sonic Colors?
@@legoking6165 worse than gen and unleashed
Yes colors and gen the games that put sonic back on the map are bad
Before I decided to watch Game Grumps Lets Play on Sonic Adventure I wanted a reminder on the pros and cons with the game. Thanks Johnny.
It been 10 years, 10 YEARS! Since he began This Marathon! Happy aniversary Sonic Marathon!
11:05 had me SCREAMING...i seriously could not stop laughing
Me too
Get trolled big
@@AlexandruCatrina-bk6jg What's the clip of that singing man?
I played this game at CompUSA when I was 18 or 19. It was the whole reason I bought a Dreamcast.
Best sonic games in random order
Sonic 06
Sonic free riders
Sonic boom
Sonic labyrinth
Sonic spin ball(gamegear)
Shadow the hedgehog(very edgy)
Sonic blast
Sgtduckerz At first I was like, lemme see and it took me at least 30 seconds to understand that you were being sarcastic XD
Robin van Baar He was being sarcastic?
Robin van Baar He was being sarcastic?
I think
Robin van Baar Every game in this list has been critically acclaimed! Of course he's serious!
"why would I want to FISH in a sonic game!?!"
Sonic Frontiers has entered the chat
Johnny. I would wholeheartedly appreciate it if you do a Rayman marathon! You just NEED to give that series a shot! :D
Golden Yoshi Great idea! =D
In my opinion, Johnny should do all of them (With the exception of the Rabbids series.)
Golden Yoshi He's getting ready to do just that.
Golden Yoshi He already did one...
Lyn Taylor You do realize his comment was from December, right?
28:40 looks like Big the Cat got all the Chaos Emeralds
Super big
Johnny: Chao, these cute little creatures
Matt:Actually
I still remember watching this video for the 1st time and waiting for you to upload the rest of the games. I didn’t realize how long ago this was. I must say Johnny that you have came a very long way and I believe you that you are a very underrated youtuber my friend. Your review are just perfect, they make me laugh until I fall out the chair. Thank you for making my late childhood a joy.
what is this free tag on the video?
I've been wondering about that myself. I guessing its related to sponsors even though this review doesn't have one.
I believe it’s because TH-cam introduced members only and paid content, Johny’s channel might have some paid content somewhere, which makes the other videos show the free tag so you know they aren’t paid.
Open Your Heart is an amazing song! It describes the game so well
28:36 BIG THE CAT.EXE
Hello! I found you through GameTheory, and I'm so happy to find someone that thoroughly reviews Sonic games, i.e. MY WHOLE CHILDHOOD
I thought your review was fascinating and I'm excited to watch your other videos as well.
29:54 - 30:01
I should clarify that the Game Gear games are only unlockable in the original GameCube version of Sonic Adventure DX and the 2004 PC version, and while they remained in the code of the XBLA/PSN/Steam re-release, they cannot be accessed without hacking the game.
Is it just me, or does anyone else think that Sonic moves faster in Adventure 1 than Adventure 2? Here, I feel like I'm going fast. In Adventure 2, I just feel like I'm moving sluggish.
I think it's because of the spindash delay in SA2.
I knew it I wasn't the only one!
+Hector Gonzalez Yeah Adventure 1 was faster, He might of been slippery but I prefer the speed. You get used to the slippiness though didn't really bother me that much.
You can move the camera with the triggers.
Yea in some parts of SA2 I felt like Sonic was rather uncomfortably slow. Most notably in Pyramid Cave
4:05 " man, stay off the Light Speed" the way he said that makes it sound like a drug.
I almost think that was the point.
To this day, still my favorite Sonic game of all-time.
Damn I can't believe this video is now 10 years old. I still remember watching this video on my awful Acer Aspire One back when this video was first uploaded.
I watched this on my DS. I miss that lol
gotta say man, always loving the reviews. love the way you tackle certain aspects of the game, and i hope you continue to grow!
17:30
'taking them out with ease'
Video clip shows John missing with the Homing Attack.
In case anyone was wondering what the hell Sega was thinking regarding Big the Cat, he exists for two reasons:
- Sega thought they needed a character who would break up the action.
28:34 I swear no matter how many times I see this it is always hilarious
"As such she _constantly_ sees herself being chased by this robot senpai, Doctor Robotnik..."
I think the actual reason Gamma has a time limit is because he has some kind of battery that constantly loses its charge and it's stimulated by some shock from the gun to keep it going.
CelluloidHoax then wouldn't gamma be near useless
well it's better than to keep you going
CelluloidHoax what if it look long to find the target
A robot that dies if it doesn't kill things. That sounds exactly like something Eggman would build. Fat fucking idiot that he is.
If it wasn't for Big, Chaos would have gotten his tail and the yellow Emerald _much_ sooner.
Big was important.
***** that is a very tiny plot point & the makers could've easily went around that with excluding big.
Tiny?
How is keeping Chaos from getting max power _tiny?_
*****
Just shut up please. U dont know shit about anything.
You are as mature as a typical Sonic fan.
(No offense to any of my niggas from Cosium.)
big kept the tail away. that's important.
Damn that Big the Cat was creepy!
You've joined the elite ranks of the four or five living humans to make me laugh out loud.
I agree. I prefer this game over Adventure 2 or any 3D Sonic games; minus Generations.
Arin from Game Grumps needs to see this so he can get a clue.
Midget54 He wont. Arin thinks his opinions are god.
***** Yep. That's why i refuse to watch his sonic adventure playthrough. Hes using the game as his own personal punching bag.
+Brenden Lauer Why does Arin hate Sonic, what happened to him?
Look, someone who can still talk positively about SA1, even though it didn't age as well as other games from this time period.
I'm really sick of all of those reviews that judge it like a modern game.
+JoJo Banks Just because it's not Sonic that doesn't make it bad.
Kylee The Youkai I meant sonic as in the spirit of sonic; what makes a sonic game a sonic game. All the other modes in the adventure games don't give me that vibe and it's not fun for me either
“Tikal can tell you exactly where to go so you’re never lost”
_right, totally_
22:43: "Why would I want to fish in a Sonic game?" Because Sega Bass Fishing.
Sonic Adventure was the last Sonic game that had classic titles feel in it, you can see lot of Difficult platforming and lovely casinos, underwater, shields ... etc, too bad modern Sonic games became all about boost to win.
23:35 oh i REALLY hope the game grumps encounter this
+awesomon they played DX, and so they didn't, the beauty of remakes buddy!
***** I think your seeing things...
Fun fact: the Chao Garden actually got me into the Sonic franchise. Saw a friend playing with the Chao at her house, and I wanted the game so badly- only to discover that there was a whole lot more to the game than I thought!
I love the subtle hinting and foreshadowing at 4:20.
4:17
