I’ve been the voice actor for Jet the Hawk in the SonicSong182 series for many, many years. It always warms my heart to see the impact that channel has had on so many people. I always associate the stage select theme with that channel too, so I’m really glad to hear it resonated with you so much.
15:00 I hate when a game gets re-released and is missing content from other re-releases. Every Mega Man 8 port is based on the PS1 version, so no Wood Man and Cut Man for us.
You can blame the lack of saturn emulation (from an official standpoint) for that. Not helping was Saturn console source code being lost as well iirc. Well one can hope they do figure out a way to bring back saturn titles (and dreamcast as well)
Saturn had highly unique architecture which means most of the stuff thats stuck on Saturn is there for good, I personally bought an inexpensive Saturn and a Pseudo Saturn Kai so I can just burn games to CD and play whatever the system has to offer instead of shelling out thousands for the more rare games like Panzer Dragoon Saga I greatly recommend it if you're interested in the system and appreciate playing on original hardware.
I made it onto the big stage! Talking to Ruth was crazy, especially the part where the scripts they were given likely still said "Rockman", explaining Dr. Light's infamous stumble. 8 isn't my favorite, but it's definitely really good. Had all the cutscenes recorded on a VHS tape along with X4 because they were so cool. Great coverage! Looking forward to Rockman & Forte!
@ColeFam , I absolutely enjoyed that interview you had with Ruth! Between noting the differences in Japanese and American culture, as well as learning the quirks behind the recording process (such as the translation team giving the scripts and not replacing “Rockman” with “Mega Man” leading Dr. Light to say “Wo-Mega Man.”), it helped me gain more respect for the development of that game, namely on the voice acting side!
Oh god, that first paragraph you wrote. That's absolutely insane that they just went in winged it without seemingly any consideration for quality control. It's a miracle how far better Mega Man Legends' localization is compared to 8 and X4. (Also, hi J! If you're reading this comment, could you check if my comment is stuck under approval? I asked because some people here commented and believed in the misinformation nonsense about Capcom withholding RE2 over Sony's Anti-2D stance. I made a comment with the posted NAVGTR video showing where that misinfo came to dispel it.)
That voice actress deserves the world for her level of cultural understanding. Bomberman has a similar vibe. Characters are genderfied but the core concept of being a “bomberman” seems similar to being a reploid/robot.
I was awed by that being her default tone of voice. It's so ingrained in my brain that hearing that segment All i could imagine was Rockman giving an interview instead lol.
For Japanese -man, they didn't "import it weirdly" it first of all already existed independent of the English meaning of "man". SECONDLY, it IS the actual english definition as a pun with Japanese, that's why there's "pikesman" and "WO-man". Western world abandoned the actual meaning. Weird sexist stuff started really taking up in 1800's English-speaking world, where by the time of abolition of teaching Latin grammar completely severed any understanding of the average person how English syntax works AT ALL. Because England always was a Roman colony that utterly failed to invent a native script, like Korean Hangul or phonetic diacritics. English, where you can write "I present you a present in the present" has NO bearing on which pronunciations you mean, is a really damaging, half a real language. You won't get far when your grammar is heavily based on Urban dictioanry "clever" portmanteaus, and attempts to memorize meanings of emoji for tiktok because you don't EVEN have Chinee Hanzi symbols to perform that function. I peresent👌 you this present🍆 in the present🤡🌏 Genders were invented in biology in 1950's by john Money when the CENSORING of the word "sex" and "pregnant" were en vogue on the TV. It's not "weird" in language: that linguistic one IS the meaning of "gender". In English it's euphemism. You live a complete false history. And gender simply splits words in groups so that when you start a word with one of THREE options, you can remember the word that follows from there three times as easily. In English when noun can start with a random letter out of 26, those are ALL possible genders, and you struggle to remember if a word is spelled pretext of pertext.
I wonder if she’s maybe added some extra steps to it? I get the idea that “man” is basically just used as a suffix for superhero characters. Take for example, “Yatterman No. 2”.
@@Vulpas what she’s doing is the opposite lol. Liberal westerner wouldn’t think about what Japanese sensibilities mean, they would paste some western “this is problematic for these reasons” over the whole notion of the spirituality of being a “mega man”. She got the concept completely correct, If she’s “liberal”, we are talking 70s/80’s/90s classical liberal, not post modern liberal.
I'll never understand why they wanted to create two Tengu Man themes. Or, for that matter, why the Saturn version's soundtrack is slightly different than the PS1 version's.
The fact that the voice actors weren’t told that they were recording for two different games is kinda crazy. Imagine not knowing that your voice talent is being used in two different places
FUN FACT: When the Salkind’s made their first two Three Musketeers films, they were originally one film. Feeling that the movie was too long, the Salkind’s split the film in half and released it as two films; The Three Musketeers (1973) and The Four Musketeers (1974). Upon learning that the Salkind’s did this, the cast and crew whose contracts were only for the one film sued the Salkind’s and SAG went on to include a clause in all of their contracts requiring studios and producers to disclose how many films are being made, known as the Salkind Clause.
@@SHADOMEGA7569 exactly. I mean sure, it wasn’t nothing but whatever the full amount was, I sure hope it would’ve at least compensated their work for both games
@@VileGlory Keeping actors in the dark still happen now in a different way. When commenting on why one game had such bad voicing, the voice actors said they were given zero context to the lines. It takes more time for a director to give context and do multiple takes. Low budget titles will most definitely just send off a script and wait for a recording to be attached to an email and they'll only want one take. It's a recipe for disaster.
fun fact: the sega saturn was more popular on japan than ps1 in jp and sonic was so unknown there that sonic team (the main studio that makes the mainline sonic games) received letters from fans that played nights into dreams saying ''who's sonic?''
@Supersayainpikmin Eventually, yes, in 1997, but until then the Saturn was outselling it. Also, while the hardware sales were close for both the Saturn and 64, software was a different story. There's a reason why the Saturn has a library almost 3 times that of the N64.
From my understanding, this is the reason why _Sonic Jam_ was created. Few people in Japan knew of the _Sonic_ series due to the Mega Drive not catching on there, so Sonic Team made a collection to show them *why* they were called "Sonic Team".
@@AztyphIt was inevitable tho; Super Mario All-Stars existed, so it was only natural Sonic would follow suit. But since Sega was mainly pushing themselves as an arcade company in Japan, few there gave a damn about their home stuff, so neither Sonic Jam nor the Saturn version of Sonic 3D Blast helped the franchise there. It also didn't help that, despite the Japanese lore being correct for the pre-2010s games even though English is the series's canonical main in-world language, early JP marketing pushed the "cute" side of Sonic WAY more than its "cool" side-the opposite problem of the Western marketing-when Sonic's "cool" and "cute" should be about 2:1. Adventure 1 only sold well there for being a hyped-up Dreamcast launch title.
She did good imo. I know the cast get shit a lot for their voices but the voices kinda add to the imagination of the series. It gave it more life then just mute and text
On TenguMan stage i have always loved the Shot'Em Up section since i love Bullet hells, but mostly because, Rush, Eddie, Beat and Auto come to help, it feels like a "I got you fam" moment with half of the squad
@@insectduel What do you mean "trial rooms"? MM&B goes the Mega Man 1 & Mega Man X route, just with the caveat that all the rematches takes place in the final stage rather than throughout all the castle stages.
A shame that Mega Man 11 squandered its potential in that regard. It would've been amazing if that game had utilized the double-gear system to give each boss the opposite gear of what they used during their first encounters. Making the gauntlet feel less repetitive, while changing up the fights and how you have to approach them when they activate their gear abilities.
Mega Man 8 doesn't just look great, it's filled with tons of creative, innovative ideas. I'm a big fan of this game since I played it for the first time a few weeks ago
People hated it and wanted it to play like the Nintendo ones. Funny cause this controlled way better than part 7 and I don't remember hearing too many complaints about 7. Crazy how they made part 9 and 10 with new graphics instead of MM8 level graphics.
10:15 EXCUSE ME?!! Mega Man 8 is my favorite Mega Man game and has been for nearly 30 years and I'm just now finding out you can adjust the Mega Ball's trajectory?!!!
Besides that, at the time I didn't know you could use Mega Ball to jump higher. I just used Tornado Hold instead. I also didn't know the shop had a second page.
There's an undub hack for the PS1 version but sadly not the Saturn version. The Japanese "Rockman 8" has a cast that's basically a who's who of anime legends: Ai Orikasa as Mega Man Ryōtarō Ōkiayu as Proto Man Nobuyuki Hiyama as Bass Hiroko Konishi as Roll Jūrōta Kosugi as Duo Shōzō Iizuka as Dr. Light Takeshi Aono as Dr. Wily Issei Futamata as Auto, Grenade Man and Astro Man Takashi Nagasako as Tengu Man and Search Man Wataru Takagi as Frost Man and Sword Man Chika Sakamoto as Clown Man and Aqua Man that's a damn fine cast, it has Zero and Link in the same game!
i just love how you dont just review the game, but you also give more context about the time when the game was released. it makes me appreciate the game even more 👍
I think what makes me enjoy so much the game Is the japanese intro and ending Electronical Comunication And Brand New Way They show just how pure Rock's heart and soul is I might prefer X and Zero, but Rock is a pretty cool guy
When you are doing game reviews and trying to mash through a game for work... the boss rush sucks. But when you get this game for your 11th birthday and it's the only game you're getting til Christmas, it's a welcome victory lap.
LOL this is exactly why game reviewers and the like love short indie games. Or at least long games that can be done in bite sized chunks. And by extension the Switch/Deck so they can play those chunks whenever. It really does color people's opinions a lot when they do this stuff as a grind.
The Flame Sword DOES have a special effect on Search Man. When he’s hiding in the bushes, you can torch the bushes until you find him and finding him this way sets him on fire briefly.
8 isn't one of my favorites thanks to a few classic omissions like E tanks and Rush's abilities, but I do adore how it looks visually. The Classic series peaked here in terms of graphically aesthetics.
Megaman 8 is highly underrated. Finding all the screws and trying out different upgrades gave it good replay ability. The robot masters talking was a nice touch
I loved it in middle school on GBA and beat it several times, but when I replayed on it on Wii U's virtual console as an adult I realized many of it's flaws and when I was done beating it I said to myself "I don't ever want to play this ever again".
As someone who plays Megaman games primarily for the boss fights and enjoys figuring the bosses out and tackling them buster-only, I love having boss-rush stages. They are my favorite part of these games, in fact, and I always looking forward to them the most. But yeah, having the boss-rush and the final boss in the same stage is a total Bravo Sierra.
2:30 - That was the reason? I remember hearing that Capcom threatened to not release Resident Evil 2 in the west unless Sony allowed Mega Man X4 and 8 to come over. Must have been one of those urban legends of gaming.
There are multiple reasons, really. Yes Sony was very anti-2D and said no to MM8 and MMX4. Capcom’s response was threatening to pull RE2, and the final handshake compromise was “give us something Saturn can’t have”. And in the end Sony actually came out losing since Saturn got the better quality music, a few different tracks, the two mini boss fights while PlayStation got the rather unimpressive art book.
Mega Man 8 happens to be my favorite game in the Classic Megaman series. It was just my favorite on the Anniversary Collection and there were so many quality of life improvements on every game that came before it. Finally, it refills life bar after the check point; and I actually happen to really like the flying and sliding sections. Some of the upgrades were also really fun; with Tornado Hold being the replacement for Rush Coil. And oh yeah, Mega Ball was fun. And yeah, the menu theme is 10/10. It also does have my all time favorite Wily fight.
Fair enough about the critiques about the player growth for the boss rush. I personally find it works well for a 2D action platformer, especially one in this early stage in gaming. I personally find the boss rush fun, because I find it challenging. I'm happy you acknowledged that and gave good reasons for feeling that way. I think that if you don't know the weakness order, it makes it really satisfying to have all of their weaknesses to beat them. I think going in boss order takes that away. That being said, it does hurt replayability, and I think that's the major flaw of the boss rush.
It should at least be in its own separate stage like in MM3/6. That way you're not forced to re-do it if you game over on Wily, which you're likely to do since he's supposed to be the hardest challenge.
I think that a boss rush should be a separate mode that appears after beating the game. When it's a mandatory part of every playthrough, it feels like "filler" and just boring repetitive stuff to go through when trying to get to the end boss. However, when it's split out into a new mode after beating the game, it feels like an "extra/bonus/omake". And you can play it at will and not be forced into it. That one thing by itself can really feel mentally different based on whether it's mandatory every playthrough or a bonus one gets by beating the game, I feel.
Honestly, Ruth’s Take on the Voice Acting was pretty intriguing in hindsight now that I know how it worked. I’d probably have to look up that interview one day. I’m glad we reached that point of looking back at old Voice Acting performances in videogames as of the time, and acknowledging we weren’t at Metal Gear Solid levels of VA Performances yet.
In the 2D vs 3D debate on the Playstation, if there were no 2D games, we wouldn't have Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, my 2nd favorite game of all time and one of the best games ever made.
3D games on PS One looked bad too, they didn't hold as well as even N64 games. The best games to play today from PS One are the 2D games cause they don't look and control like ass.
3d was just such a technological leap. I remember complaining to friends about the lack of 2d. They were confused. Until a few years later they were agreeing. It wasn't really until the indie game boom that we got a lot of 2d back. If you like SOTN, i recommemd the deedlit game. It's the closest i've gotten to feeling like sotn while still having it's own identity.
@@MichaelTaylor-qp2xf Yes it is! it's a bit shorter but again it felt similar while having it's own identity. that probably doesn't make any sense but i don't know another way to say it. lol
As someone who doesn't like 8 that much, I absolutely adore the shop system and think it's the best shop system of any Mega Man game. The games are designed to be replayed in different orders for new experiences, so comboing that with a system where you have to choose what you want is nice, and encourages experimentation for later runs. It also does wonders for exploration. Every shop bolt is the equivalent of finding a Beat Letter, but now there's 40. That's a lot of opportunities for exploration and challenges!
It's a good thing you mentionned voice actresses playing male characters in cartoons and especially anime, as it is a common trope. And it lead to some iconic voices : Son Goku, Naruto, Luffy, Satoshi (Ash Ketchum), Daï...and yes, even Megaman who's meant to be a young boy.
I always see the boss gauntlet as a form of "final exam". If a megaman game doesn't have it, it's not a megaman game. It's actually a staple game design if you look at other games. It wants to check if you've learned anything.
25:17 Hey J, I know you're not the biggest fan of these Boss Rushes, but here's my take on how I would go about it if I were to develop a Mega Man game. 🙂 If I gotta put the Boss Rush in there, I can add it as its own stage rather than having it there BEFORE facing off with Dr. Wily. I would make it that Wily has his own 5th Stage so whenever you get a Game Over, you don't have to do the boss rush. As for the Boss Rushes themselves, I would've liked it if the Bosses mixed up their patterns in their Rematch. If Wily rebuilt them (or they're just hologram copies, I dunno), it shows that the Robot Master wanted to try something different to take down Mega Man. Like for example, maybe Tengu Man will take less time on the ground so you have to be quick enough to use Ice Wave on him, or Clown Man will use Thunder Claw in a different way rather than from the ground, Aqua Man will use a Tidal Wave, or Astro Man making illusions of himself to trick you or something. These are just little ideas I wanted to share.
You know, that actually would be kind of cool. The format of boss rushes I like the most is the MM1 and MMX1 style where it’s spread throughout the fortress. Combine that with your idea, and that sounds like a winner to me.
Am I the only one that loved the flying sections to death? I could play a whole series of Megaman games with that playstyle, but that's unfortunately never going to happen...
Nah I feel you, I enjoyed the flying sections quite a bit. Maybe not to death lol but I thought those sections were a fun change-up in play style. I'd be down for a side-scrolling megaman shmup-game.
SCEA supposedly did have a policy against 2D games, but it was only enforced for the first year of the PS1's release and loosely at that. Games like Rayman and the PS1 port of Mortal Kombat 3 were _huge_ exceptions to the rule, so I don't think it was ever that firm of a policy. I haven't found anything about difficulties or drama between Capcom and SCEA for this period. Not even as it pertains to Resident Evil 2, which was said to have been the game Capcom got up in arms about the "no 2D" policy at SCEA over, even though it released in 1998 which is _well_ outside of that policy's period of relevance, and also notably after multiple Mega Man games had released in the US. If anything, it seems like Sega of America were the ones to cause issues. Bernie Stolar is a factor for both SCEA and SoA, and one thing he did with the Saturn was try to "salvage" it which no doubt involved harshly limiting Capcom's ability to release games on the platform, and it's likely that the reason why Capcom didn't continue to do arcade ports on the Saturn was because SoA all but shut down the Saturn following 1998. I could see Capcom trying to pull a hail mary on SoA to make a case for changing course on the Saturn, leveraging the potential of RE2 on the platform. However, unlike the SCEA story, it fails and SoA's policy doesn't really change. Later, the majority of Capcom's output on Dreamcast ends up the same as it was on the Saturn: Mostly arcade ports and a scarce amount of original titles.
Yeah it pisses me off, because apparently there was a lot of good games on the Saturn that basically killed SEGA. It is the most popular SEGA console in Japan.
I used to be very harsh about this game for a lot of the same concerns that people will typically point out, plus I had personal gripes with the slow walking movement and the damage output for the weapons. But finally beating 8 on the Legacy Collection a month ago helped soften my opinion a bit to say that it’s not rock bottom on my personal tier list anymore. The soundtrack is great for remixes, the Buster/weapon mechanic is neat, and the animated montage for the intro is awesome! Plus seeing speedrunners use Mega Ball tech is fun to watch. So while 8 is still lower for me, I can say that I’ve grown to respect 8 more.
My copy of 8 didn't even have that art book. It's advertised as having it, I even contacted Capcom about it back in the day and nothing. I'm not convinced this art book ever existed.
@@Jackattack359 What I'm saying is I bought the game new, when it WAS new, and yes mine IS marked as including the art book. No art book was included. I even contacted CAPCOM about it, and gave them my info at the time, never received one.
@@The_Nametag never mind, I just googled it. It said due to a manufacturing issue, it wasn’t included in every copy of the game. Apparently it’s a pretty rare booklet as a result
I replayed this for the first time in a while last summer, and I enjoyed it more than I'd thought I would. The gameplay is... well, exactly as you described it, but I was shocked at how beautiful some of the backgrounds were, and the music is so smooth. I remember the first time I ever set foot in Frost Man's stage, and thought to myself, "This is what PlayStation music sounds like," the same way 8- and 16-bit consoles always had a particular sound to them; that combined with that opening Sony PlayStation logo made the console seem so futuristic at the time, and I haven't had an experience with a new console that was anywhere near that since then.
This game still has my favorite visual style of the entire series. Still looks great years later. I love how the robot master abilities are used for both combat and exploring the environment, feeling like an extension of your moveset rather than a replacement. The voices can be hit or miss at times, but I liked this game's Mega Man. (Especially with context from Ruth Marie Jarman) This whole game just kinda felt like 90's Classic Mega Man anime and I loved it. (Though X4 has the worse dubbing in my opinion.)
7:40 I was listening to this on my way home from work and the way my eyes widened hearing that channel name again. Holy hell i think i was also probably 8 when i found that channel
It's weird that MM8 and X4 were rejected because of the artstyle, the look the most beautiful MM games, with an artstyle people still can't copy. 8 and X4 looks extremely beautiful.
Looking back at this game I think in terms of voices Megaman’s Mega-man 8 voice honesty could suit a pre Mega-Man 1 to at the very least Mega-Man 4 era Rock while the Mega-Man 11 voice suits Rock Mega-Man 5 or 6 onward
Women generally do voices of young boys, but they also typically make it more boy-ish sounding. Boys tend to vocalize differently for psychological reasons even if the difference between boy and girl voices has little physical difference.
I believe a good Mega Man boss rush is one of two things. First way I like it, spread it between different stages like first Classic and X games. A simple way to break up the pace. Alternatively, take the Mega Man X2 approach and make the bosses more difficult, whether it be by modifying boss AI, the arena, or maybe both. In the latter case, I also like it being in a different stage to the final boss, though I definitely would be in for a lesser fortress boss to appear after a teleporter room. Something like Wily Press in Mega Man 5, for instance, which is a prelude to Wily Machine 5 next level.
It's great but I don't go back to it often, whereas most MMs are very picky up n play. Like 7 you have to consider the place the series was at. 7 and 8 were progressions, beefier more in depth games with more story. I like the limited bolts, forcing you to pick your items wisely. Good for replayability, checking out other item loadouts. Using the powers as utilities was great here too. The swinging, bomb bouncing and tornado lifting are all satisfying.
"You couldn't write better irony if you tried." Well, you certainly weren't trying to overlook that Burst Man's ALSO weak to both Freeze Cracker AND Scorch Wheel. Or were you, given your boss rush hatred and that the boss rush is the only way you'd confirm that fact?
I still think Mega-man 10 should have been in the style of Mega-man 8 or at least in a more modern take on the 8 bit Mega-man art style similar to Mega-Man Perfect Blue or how Sonic Mania went for a more modern take on the Classic Sonic Game’s 16 bit style. By then the Classic 8 bit Mega-Man style was kinda overused like there was no reason for Mega-Man 10 to be 8 bit. Mega-Man 9 at least had the excuse of being a Anniversary game
Damn I feel old. Played this game back in 90's when it got released to Sega Saturn. I was a kid back then and this is one of the games I used to like the most at that time. Good to know many new people are experiencing and enjoying this game almost 30 years later.
Honestly at this point I think it would be weird if they took away the boss rush at the end of each Megaman game. It's basically tradition at this point. I do however wish they'd implement it like in MM1 and MMX1 where the rematches are spread across the castle stages. Less of a pace breaker and also no punishment if you die to the final boss and have to fight all 8 again.
I personally think the controls are slow and the stages are bland. I have only played the first 4 levels, but I just went to play other Mega Man games for like the 4th time instead of playing Mega Man 8's second half.
I think "JUMP, JUMP", the easy target voice acting, and the difficulty of the Wily stages (having to be beat them in one go without gameovering) has alot to do with it. Finally beating Wily stage 1s snowboard was so difficult as a kid then getting a game over made me rage quit it for a while. Personally, I grew up with x4/x5 and got this as a kid thinking it would be similar and didn't really care for how slow it felt to move (of course as a kid I didn't know there was a difference between the X series and original). It's not "bad" but I never feel the need to replay it over anything else.
It made everything the older games did but worse and tried to cover those flaws under a cool-looking coat of paint. I don't care if Megaman's jump has 50 frames of animation when I'm gonna land into a platform that's part of an artificially difficult room within a boring level.
@thomasffrench3639 agreed it feels slow and I'm not a big fan of the soccer ball gimmick. Just give me my mega buster. Slide slide 😅 ugh. "Time to get serious 😅" astro man's level is annoying, the swinging mechanics at clown man was trash, and some of the visuals sword man's weapon are pretty janky looking.
24:59 reminds me of AVGN, dont feel bad Its like on simons quest Just like simons quest This reminds me off simons quest I do it with working on cars too
I think the Boss Rushes could benefit from maybe at least cutting the health bars in half. And/Or making it it's own stage, separated from the final boss. But you can't just cut it.
Never beat this game because of the STUPID delayed hover board, in Wiley's stage one! Tried when I was 8 & agin at 28. It's impossible the game is broken right there lol. Although I hear this is not an issue on the Saturn version.
Wily stage one is definitely a tough wall to get over, but I was able to do it as a kid on PS1. I dunno how big the delay is between versions so I can't speak on that. But if you're trying to get through the final stretch after a lot of the slide portions are over, you can cheese a few AstroCrushes to stay airborn till you run out of energy. I found it helpful back in the day at least. I'd give it another shot, bet you'll manage it. Then good luck on the boss tactics lol.
As a kid, I hated the game, but over the years it's really grown on me. The art style and music feels so timeless but still has some great 90s camp under the surface. The controls do bother me a bit, but honestly you get used to it after a stage, I just wish MegaMans model wasn't so soft looking, and his buster, not including the arrow shot, just don't have the same impact as previous games.
I'm glad im not the only one who had the same story with sonicsong182 but oddly enough the second time since final fantasy sonic uses megaman X4 opening
MegaMan 8 is really fun to play and the anime cutscenes back then made me interested in playing it, similar to Sonic CD's intro and ending. I'm fine with the lower difficulty, micromanaging bolts is silly enough and the snowboard section is kinda hard the first time. As someone who'se not a native English speaker, I found MegaMan's and the other voices to be good and never laughed in a bad way about it albeit I can see why people make fun of it now. Didn't know that interview either. Crazy that VA didn't even change her voice for Rock and X judging by the sound of it. What made me curious tho was that the lines were recorded like in the early 90's? What's up with that?
are you familar with the megaman ova, wish upon a star, cause i think megaman voice in that one has to be my favorite megaman voice, not to girly sounding but not too deep either.
@@jskywalker58 Those are cool too. Fun fact, Ruby Spears helped working on those too and initially their show was supposed to look like the OVAs. I mainly know the Japanese versions where Rock, Roll and the others have their respective VAs from the games but yes, those were good too.
When i was watchting that i had 2 thoughts 1 why didn't they have the person who voice megaman in that ova voice him in megaman 8 2why didn't they used the ova version of the characters in the ruby spear cartoon if they did we would have gotten a perfect adaptation of the classic series
It's going to be interesting to see your thoughts on Megaman and Bass (Rockman and Forte). I actually found it better to be Megaman 8, but only due to certain reasons. Megaman 8 is quite nice in gameplay and music. The problem is the voice acting is.....yeah. There have been attempts to undub the Megaman 8. I still wish you could remove a lot of the voices in-game because it's not really necessary. Eventually just turns it into Flame Hyenard.
Mega Man 8 was also initially going to be fully Saturn exclusive. As such, it is one of the very rare cases of the PSX being a port rather than the other way around. Sony was willing to be much more reasonable, despite it being a 2D game. Though Capcom still kept some bonus content on the Saturn in a show of goodwill toward SEGA. It shows how much pressure Sony felt from SEGA of America than their Japanese branch. They knew how much they saved the Mega Drive. Sure makes you wish they had rebuilt SotN from the ground up for the Saturn. It had so much potential to utilize the great features the sprite engine has. Mega Man 8 is that nice future where the Saturn got to show off the goods and did so with flying colors.
Honestly I'm patiently waiting for your review of Megaman and Bass, I watched your collab on Remake or Rebreak years ago which changed my mind on it and while it may not represent your opinions on it today, It changed mine a while back and I've enjoyed the game ever since after giving it a proper shake. I'm super stoked!
Apparently, the anti-2D sentiment stopped because Capcom held Resident Evil 2 for ransom unless they let them release 2D games. Which is so badass. EDIT: This is apparently incorrect, sorry for spreading misinformation. And nowadays, there’s a backlash against this idea and people shit on great early 3D games like Resident Evil and Mario 64 as “dated” but they don’t seem to do the same to dated 2D games like Castlevania 4 or Mega Man 7. At least in my opinion, it’s all subjective.
Capcom threatening to withhold RE2 from PlayStation because of MMX4 and the anti-2D stance is misinformation bullshit. That did not happened. That was all stupid crap made up by the narrator from Gaming in the Clinton Years, or NAViGTR, commenting that *he thought* Capcom should withhold that game to watch Sony buckle: th-cam.com/video/0NJbSwA2-f4/w-d-xo.html
When you mentioned during the re-fights how you already had the weakness for 6 of the 8 bosses when you did the initial fights, it made me think about how a lot how different people play Mega Man games, especially on their first play through. Some go in blind (or had to back when they were new) or immediately need to know the "boss order", and I think knowing that order really diminishes the boss re-fights. I always love the boss re-fights on my first play through of a Mega Man games because I didn't know what the boss weaknesses were at the start of the game, this is my chance to figure that out. To experience the fight in a different, albeit easier (which is why they make it a 8 boss gauntlet I think) way, and experiment with the weapons. Maybe even with the weakness you struggled the first time, just figuring out the pattern in the last few moments of the fight, and now you can show off in the re-fight. Sure on your next replay, you now know exactly what to do, so it can be tedious to just fight them again, I get that, but I think that's when you start messing around in your replays. The weapon variety and openness (for the time) of Mega Man games let you do fun, self-imposed challenges. Maybe no E-tanks this time, or buster only, or weapons only, or using weapons on a boss that that isn't their weakness (or main weakness).
Goku in JP GBZ also has a high voice though. I thought it was just a Japanese thing about making the super powerful unlimited growth hero somewhere between "underestimated" and "hilarious" for having a girly, or possibly young voice.
I'm not sure I beleive the "No 2D" policy Sony had was real. Rayman was a launch title for the console in North America, and Street Fighter Alpha and Darkstalkers were also very early games for the system in America as well, before Mega Man 8.
Yeah it was real. That guy Bernie Stolar I think was responsible. He did the same thing on the Saturn after he took over Sega US around the mid 90s, and the Saturn infamously only got 25% of the full library of games in the US partly because of that.
Sony America's draconian licensing rules for most of the PS1's life were VERY well-documented back in the day. They weren't very controlling in the first days of the system, but once they actually got a foot in the door they started working very hard to manage their image.
I’ve watched most of your reviews of Mega Man/Person and this is your first explanation for the refights where I finally understand your point of view. They **ARE** padding when the game wants you to basically stunlock them into oblivion.
I think this game is probably the worst of the 11 main entries, being really janky, having no option to turn off voices which sometimes are really, REALLY aggravating, unskippable cutscenes that last ages, Clown Man Stage, Astro Man Stage, Astro Man, and the jump slide segments are one of the worst things I've played in any Mega Man game It's not really a bad game as much as just a lot of what's wrong with Mega Man is present, introduced and sometimes at its worse in this game
I have only played the first 4 robot masters and I wasn’t huge on this game. Mega Man feels slow in this game and I think the levels are too long and boring with annoying. Not much else to add really as I haven’t play much of this game

You can blame the lack of saturn emulation (from an official standpoint) for that. Not helping was Saturn console source code being lost as well iirc. Well one can hope they do figure out a way to bring back saturn titles (and dreamcast as well)
Saturn had highly unique architecture which means most of the stuff thats stuck on Saturn is there for good, I personally bought an inexpensive Saturn and a Pseudo Saturn Kai so I can just burn games to CD and play whatever the system has to offer instead of shelling out thousands for the more rare games like Panzer Dragoon Saga

Great coverage! Looking forward to Rockman & Forte!
Ty for sharing the vid!

That voice actress deserves the world for her level of cultural understanding. Bomberman has a similar vibe. Characters are genderfied but the core concept of being a “bomberman” seems similar to being a reploid/robot.

@@TheRealBlazingDiamond Wait until you deal with Romance language logic. Where the masculine case is obligatory in most cases.
I peresent👌 you this present🍆 in the present🤡🌏
Genders were invented in biology in 1950's by john Money when the CENSORING of the word "sex" and "pregnant" were en vogue on the TV.

The PS1 outsold the Saturn in Japan. It did outsell the N64 though (barely)
@Supersayainpikmin
Eventually, yes, in 1997, but until then the Saturn was outselling it.

I remember reading about that same reason in a 1997 issue of EGM.

@@WhiteFangofWar yeah thats my only gripe. it should be its own stage.
@WhiteFangofWar I think 1 and X did it right, sprinkling it in through out the castle stages.

In the 2D vs 3D debate on the Playstation, if there were no 2D games, we wouldn't have Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, my 2nd favorite game of all time and one of the best games ever made.

Hey J, I know you're not the biggest fan of these Boss Rushes, but here's my take on how I would go about it if I were to develop a Mega Man game. 🙂
If I gotta put the Boss Rush in there, I can add it as its own stage rather than having it there BEFORE facing off with Dr.

Oh yes it did. Best Megaman game ever….
Not in my opinion. I would rather play any of the other classic Mega Man games.
@@megamanmarchek8293 Agreed. While still a good game; I'd rather play any of the NES entries as well. "Best MegaMan game ever"? This guy...
You're allowed to have your opinion, but if you share it you'll have to cope with the consequences 💀
The best parts of this game are peak Megaman, but the worst parts are unbelievably annoying
lmao no. ur drunk
(Though X4 has the worse dubbing in my opinion.)
this game is severely underrated, the music is some of the bets in the series!
Astro, Frost, and Aqua Man's themes are such a vibe
Aqua mans song 👌
Wily castle level 2 slapped hard
@@zander3100 I see you have good taste. That + Grenade Man are my favorites.
7:40 I was listening to this on my way home from work and the way my eyes widened hearing that channel name again. Holy hell i think i was also probably 8 when i found that channel
ITS THE SONICSONG182 MUSIC!?!
It's weird that MM8 and X4 were rejected because of the artstyle, the look the most beautiful MM games, with an artstyle people still can't copy. 8 and X4 looks extremely beautiful.
24:32
My right ear is severely enjoying this
Voice over for Dr Light 16:35 hilarious
Looking back at this game I think in terms of voices Megaman’s Mega-man 8 voice honesty could suit a pre Mega-Man 1 to at the very least Mega-Man 4 era Rock while the Mega-Man 11 voice suits Rock Mega-Man 5 or 6 onward
Women generally do voices of young boys, but they also typically make it more boy-ish sounding. Boys tend to vocalize differently for psychological reasons even if the difference between boy and girl voices has little physical difference.
Hope the next video is for Megaman & Bass, the TRUE Mega Man 9 😊
he revealed in a community post that it would be next :P
@@centurychum awesome! And now I watched the full video, he also confirmed there =D
i wonder if hes gonna despise Mm and bass or love it lol that game is so split with ppl its always interesting.
Eh I just picked up a import copy of Mega man and bass for SNES....or my retron 5🤷🏻♂️
What do you mean "the TRUE Mega Man 9"? Mega Man 9 is the real MM9, that's why it's called that.
21:31 J I have to admit. When you did make the slip up a few moments later. I was 100% convinced you did it on purpose as a subtle joke
me too 😂😂

the bgm buildup
Just remembering MM8 intro of Mega man running to this.
Nostalgia
I love Dr. Light's voice in this game
The swinging, bomb bouncing and tornado lifting are all satisfying.
wait wait wait wait wait - you can CHANGE THE ANGLE of Mega Ball's trajectory????
7:40 Bro, what a flashback
I didn't even realize they used this song. I didn't even know who Mega Man was back then in like 2014. Time flies man
The Voice of Roll is more Masculine than Megaman XD
I always felt that way, as well.
@@Vulpas The thing is, that Megamans voice is to femenin that comparing it to Rolls Voice.
"You couldn't write better irony if you tried."
Well, you certainly weren't trying to overlook that Burst Man's ALSO weak to both Freeze Cracker AND Scorch Wheel.
Good to know many new people are experiencing and enjoying this game almost 30 years later.
my favorite part about MM8 is that grenade man's weakness is his own weapon. (not literally my favorite)
I love Megaman 8! I never understood why it is not well liked.
I personally think the controls are slow and the stages are bland. I have only played the first 4 levels, but I just went to play other Mega Man games for like the 4th time instead of playing Mega Man 8's second half.
Gimmicky stages, unbalanced special weapons, and an extreme amount of backtracking to get all of the bolts.
24:59 reminds me of AVGN, dont feel bad
Its like on simons quest
Just like simons quest
This reminds me off simons quest
I do it with working on cars too
Best in the series😊
I love this game one of my first megaman games and I still think to this day best looking in terms of sprites and art. Music was great too
I'm glad im not the only one who had the same story with sonicsong182 but oddly enough the second time since final fantasy sonic uses megaman X4 opening
When i was watchting that i had 2 thoughts
1 why didn't they have the person who voice megaman in that ova voice him in megaman 8
2why didn't they used the ova version of the characters in the ruby spear cartoon if they did we would have gotten a perfect adaptation of the classic series
Can you Imagine? There is an alternate universe where he the "Super Fighting Robot! Megaperson!" Fascinating
Mega Man 8 voice actress insinuating that Mega Man made a Rick and Morty joke before Rick and Morty.
Mega Man 8 is that nice future where the Saturn got to show off the goods and did so with flying colors.
love how revo is X'd out
Honestly I'm patiently waiting for your review of Megaman and Bass, I watched your collab on Remake or Rebreak years ago which changed my mind on it and while it may not represent your opinions on it today, It changed mine a while back and I've enjoyed the game ever since after giving it a proper shake.
@@OKeijiDragon Okay, thanks for the clarification, Sorry about spreading misinformation
MegaMan 7 is anything but dated
Mega Man 7? That's like one of the most polished games in the whole series. 😂
Maybe no E-tanks this time, or buster only, or weapons only, or using weapons on a boss that that isn't their weakness (or main weakness).
this is the third of these reviews where the title is "mega man did something incredible" you really love these specific games huh
I usually call the green devil in mm8 the Jello devil and was disappointed it's not officially called that
17:16 Revo's face being crossed out really cracked me up for some reason (Yes, I know about the despicable things he has done, Don't remind me.)
I appreciate the revo erasure

Goku in JP GBZ also has a high voice though. I thought it was just a Japanese thing about making the super powerful unlimited growth hero somewhere between "underestimated" and "hilarious" for having a girly, or possibly young voice.
4:57 “Shut up.”
5:01 Uuuuuuwaaughhhh!
Wait what!!! I had 6 copies of this game and had me replay all of them. Love MegaMan!!! Like and Subbed great video
I'm not sure I beleive the "No 2D" policy Sony had was real. Rayman was a launch title for the console in North America, and Street Fighter Alpha and Darkstalkers were also very early games for the system in America as well, before Mega Man 8.
It was, real plenty of documentation.
Yeah it was real. That guy Bernie Stolar I think was responsible. He did the same thing on the Saturn after he took over Sega US around the mid 90s, and the Saturn infamously only got 25% of the full library of games in the US partly because of that.
@@XenoJehuty84 if there is I’d like to see it. All I can find is people talking about it with slightly different variations of the story.
Also, Bernie got a timed exclusivity deal for Mortal Kombat 3 on the PS1.
I think this game is probably the worst of the 11 main entries, being really janky, having no option to turn off voices which sometimes are really, REALLY aggravating, unskippable cutscenes that last ages, Clown Man Stage, Astro Man Stage, Astro Man, and the jump slide segments are one of the worst things I've played in any Mega Man game
It's not really a bad game as much as just a lot of what's wrong with Mega Man is present, introduced and sometimes at its worse in this game
It's the only one I've played, but not finished.
> I think this game is probably the worst of the 11
Based and Super Fighting pilled
This was my first megaman game. Special place in my heart. Probably one of my favorite games and soundtrack
I have only played the first 4 robot masters and I wasn’t huge on this game. Mega Man feels slow in this game and I think the levels are too long and boring with annoying. Not much else to add really as I haven’t play much of this game
