For over 25 Years, this beloved icon has seen many, many, MANY releases and many different spin-offs. For this series of videos, we're sticking to the classic games and seeing how well they hold up today. Ready?

I just love how Johnny uses the Archie Comics to summarize the plot. I seriously loved that comic and it gave me a deeper appreciation for the series, and it saddens me that it died well before its time.
Does Archie Mega Man get as insane as Archie Sonic?
@@romdan7136 No, it doesn't. It works in some unique characters and takes on certain events, or even telling some original stories, but more or less sticks pretty close to the original games in terms of character and lore. I think part of that is because it was so short lived that it was never given the potential to become as utterly crazy as Archie!Sonic.
@@alexandergonyea4642 Oh, Wow. Granted, I read the MM Sonic crossover, and I thought that was pretty interesting. I'll admit though, If you wanna interest me.. Give me stories with Roll. Like, It DOES feel like she just kind of existed in a lot of games. I know she's meant to be an assistant, but come tf on. At least Powered Up gave us something.

She has some fairly interesting dynamics with different characters, like her and Kalinka - Dr Cossack from MM 4's daughter - being mistaken for sisters, and a particularly strong moment between herself and Rock in the first storyline. She even gets at least one issue dedicated to herself (a lot of this is foggy, since it's been a long time since I last read them.) That's another element where they might've done even more with her if they'd lasted longer, but at the very least it's clear that the interest in giving her things to do was there.
I think the part at 6:43 is even more hilarious since Johnny didn't even react right after nudging to get that item and ending up falling off the platform.

Considering the graphics that MegaMan PoweredUp had, it should have been re-released on the 3DS
I honestly wouldn't mind if we got a Megaman leftovers collection featuring Powered up. Along with Maverick hunter X, the Legends games, Power battle, Megaman and Bass and the racing spin-offs.
3ds games looked better then that game.

Probably already mentioned, but the term "Robot Master" (if I remember correctly) comes from the fact that these particular models of robots have the ability to command simpler, dronelike robots, which are what you're dealing with throughout the level. The intention was that each of the Robot Masters in THIS game were supposed to be like the foreman of a particular job, with the drones serving as their work force.

Hey Johnny, great review! Just a couple tips:
- The Yellow Devil has a set pattern. So what I did is assign each "attack" a number up to 7. This way, you can easily memorise and dodge it consistently.
- Fireman is easily no damaged by following him, because he only fires if he's far away. So if you hug him, he'll never fire.
I have an easier method for Fire Man. If you time your jumps right, you don’t even have to run!
As a child, I was always surprised that his sprite art, and in game portrait, always depicted a young boy, while the box art displays a buff trooper!
I've been following John for over 10 years now. I discovered him in 2012. The first ever review of his i saw was Sonic 06. Go figure. And since then, i have watched his reviews multiple times, over and over. I dont think there's a asingle video of his i havent seen.

+DashieSparkle No, it's okay to do that. Some games can take a long time, before figuring out which one you can tackle first. The level might prove to be a dead end, if you can't defeat the robot master. I wonder if one can beat Gemini Man from MM3 with only buster (without using Turbo).
Taken as how you need one to complete the first Legend of Zelda, I doubt it counts as cheating.
+Stephen P I could, Gemini man is pretty easy, just jump over him and his clone and shoot when safe, because he only tends to shoot when you shoot him. It's when his clone disappears, that's when he gets tricky because his Gemini laser can deal a lot of damage. The one that I consider very hard with just Buster is Shadow man, I have never beaten him without the top spin.

I tried Mega Man once and gave up an hour later cause I couldn't pass the first stage I picked
I ragequit after loosing to the Yellow Devil 87 TIMES!I was a kid back then and sure as hell don't want to play it again
I tried Megaman 1 first and ragequit on it.
You should start with 2 and go up from there.
Then go back to 1 when you think you can handle it.
That's what I did.
Which stage did you pick? Try Cut Man first. His stage is the easiest

Mega Man and Mega Man X Switch their formula around.
Mega Man: Getting to the bosses is pretty frustrating, but the bosses themselves aren’t that hard.
Mega Man X: Getting to the bosses is kind of a breeze but the bosses put up a fight.
John was so ahead of his time. This was already a few years into his reviews. Taking the less gimmicky AVGN-like route and just chilled in-depth reviews. It's why I still rewatch all the old videos when I want to chill out.

Agreed. But looking back, I think it's because that's what Keiji Inafune (the MAIN Mega Man art designer) wanted Rockman to look like from the beginning. But because Blue had a better palette in the NES color library, developers made him use blue.

Definitely. Mega Man started it all and is my favorite of the Mega Men, so it displeases me too; it's quite jarring.

I'll never forget my summer of 2017. I had the legacy collection on the 3DS and was dead set on beating Mega Man 1. But because of the ass backwards way you pause on the 3DS version, i couldn't use the pause trick to beat the yellow devil. It took about an hour, but i beat him legit. And that, was probably my biggest achievement in gaming.

The controls dude. The fucking controls. They automatically make it worse than 2 and if you think otherwise you need to remove those rose tinted glasses that seem to be implanted into your face.

I love the yellow devil fight honestly, this game definitely has a lot more problematic and archaic design choices than the other games overall
IMO the Yellow Devil is easy once you memorize his pattern and learn the jumping pattern to get around his moving bits. CWU-01P on the other hand is a randomly spawning nightmare unless you use the Guts-Arm on the rocks for its last 3 forms

The Yellow Devil is HARD, one of the hardest parts of the entire franchise, but it isn't too hard. I used to be unable to do it without the pause trick too, but just really try it. It's a difficult pattern, but it can be learned.

This is literally the hardest game I have EVER played.
I only powered through to the end because I'm already a fan of the series.
Every stage (except Fire Man) gave me SO much trouble. It's insane!
The bosses are complete push overs though (Assuming your health is full, hehe)
The Wily Stages are also hard (Good thing they're short!)
Yellow Devil.....honestly is the easiest of the Wily Bosses.

i would say mega man 2 or 9
I would honestly avoid MM1 until you're ready.
I recommend MM2 which is far easier and considered the best. I've also never played MM9.
My favorite is MM5, but you should go in order.
SkyR923 mega man anniversary edition for ps2, or gamecube it has megaman 1-8 and 2 jupan only games (wily wars and something else) it is vary cheap (cheaper than giting the original version) but if I have to pick one I would pick 8

My little brother has this on his 3DS. And I played through it. And you're right it's hard. If the Virtual Console didn't have the ability to create a save state, I'd go nuts! I really loved going through Cut Man's stage though, probably because it didn't infuriate me as much as Elec Man's stage or Ice Man's. And I'm not gonna lie, I used the pause glitch/exploit. I regret nothing.

Really, I think the first MegaMan game alongside its PSP remake is really great and fun to play.
Sure many people are scared of the series' difficulty but as you said it yourself, Johnny, there are games which are much worse than MegaMan games might ever be.
Plus, I really dislike the fact that so little people were interested in the PlayStation Portable as a handheld, I own like 20 games for that thing and love every single one of these.
Even though this is off topic what I am sorry for, more system sales also might have helped the MegaMan series from nowadays' view.
Good review, but your comments towards the PSP at the end kinda annoyed me. The PSP was one of the most popular systems in Japan for years, which is most likely why Mega Man Powered Up was released for it. Just a minor nitpick of mine.

I'm about ten years late, but for the record: the reason they're called Robot Master is generally believed to be because they're meant to be put in charge of other, non-sapient robots.

i really loved powered up(especially for playing as roll and the robot masters,would love it if the next classic megaman game or x9 did something like this again.capcoms presence on the psp was really underrated as there are a lot of classics and like johnny said shouldve really been given an option to play on the ps3 by itself.) my favorite style of megaman along with 9 and 8.

I have to agree that Rockman isn't a very good name, especially for a robot whose powers have nothing to do with rocks. However, the name "Rock" in and of itself isn't bad considering Dr. Light's love of musical names.

well you could always get a rom if you want to play it that badly.
what do you mean on your pep just get a pep emulator and use a rom on your computer, if assuming your computer can run it.
Just get CFW (Pro C2 as it is easy to install as it doesn't need a pandora Battery or whatever), download a rom, put it on the PSP and play! (not as easy as that but oh well)
It's funny because Fireman is actually the easiest in the series once you you know you can just sit in the entrance and jump and shoot one shot at the same time until he dies. It's hilarious.
It's funny seeing how there were only six people hired to make this game, and there are six robot masters you need to defeat. So, coincidence? YES
