Tip for new players from some one who has almost 4k hours in the game. Just play the game. find something that you find interesting and go with it. without any guides. Yes it will suck but it will teach you why it sucks. As you gain experience with the games mechanics you will eventually get better. This game is fun when you discover stuff on your own. Also if you get stuck at something and dont know what something does go to the games wiki its the most help i got.
I agree somewhat. I think it is kind of like Dark Souls, but much less explicit. In DS, I would learn from my failures, but here... I don't even see an enemy and I explode in a pool of blood. IDK the debuffs I'm receiving. IDK what the hell hit me, but one hit apparently and, boom. Same for sometimes knowing what hit me. And I thought my resistances were good (79, 73, 70) enough to at least not get 1 shot by random normal enemies. So in short, I'm not learning why I'm dying, I just die sometimes and then I don't without changing anything... that's the ONLY reason I came to this damn video.
@@akeemrollins2327 some enemies just hit hard. regardless of your resistances. check your armor and health. also sometimes multiple hits kills you in less than 1 sec. theres multiple things that can kill you but you will learn them over time and learn to avoid them as well.
@Cyle Jackson It happens lol. I stopped playing for a year and when I came back I was confused af so I started a new character and tried different skill gems until I found something I loved spamming. Then I started just experimenting from there. Just research basic key concepts like how skill gems, sockets and links work and that's basically it. The passive skill tree should be a lot easier once you have an idea of what skills you're using and what stats you need for them. Give this approach a try.. it might work for you. The skill gems from quests rewards is often a good place to start.
@Mitch Wilson "So don't expect things be any better for you?" I'm confused at what you're trying to get at man. I personally lost interest in the game a couple months now so all I did was share my experience hoping it might help someone lol.
Welcome to the PoE community in a nutshell. >Reading a build guide that is aimed for new players >Full of long-ass acronyms that nobody would know unless you've played the game a few times through
@@d0ntr4p3m3 dude when u go see some tutorial or forum about gem set ups mechanics etc and u start to see "Cwdt" "ic" "ES" and others u rly get fucked xd that happened and happens to me way to often
Don't worry about it, you don't need to know most of this. The best advice I could give you is get the lootfilter from NeverSink since it'll help you understand what items actually carry value. If you're in the group of people who don't want to copy a build and prefer to make their own as well, you don't have to follow a guide. I'd still recommend checking out several guides on the skill that you're gonna use just so you can look at their skill trees and figure out which clusters are the most important, then you'll have a solid basis to figure out your own pathing from :-)
The main things to remember is that most of the gear that you find is going to be hot trash, and defenses are king. Most of what you will find (even with a loot filter to have the truly hot trash not show up) are not going to be helping with defenses. With defenses being king, that's what a character needs to prioritize first, damage second.
DON'T LISTEN TO THIS VIDEO. Seriously, it's fucking stupid. This is a guide for the most hardcore minmaxing in the game, it is not "tips for new players" like it says. You can completely finish the story and a lot more with just playing the game and not bothering with any of this crap. New players should not bother with any of this and they should not copy build orders. A big appeal of the game is exactly how much options it gives you to build your own character. Rendering this to a Simon Says, follow the build order game takes away a big part of that appeal.
I see what you did there. When are these dev's going to learn that insulting your core player base is not a good idea?Your post definitely made me chuckle.Cheers.
No king rules forever. You have come to a safe-place now. We will take good care of you. Welcome to the best ARPG community on earth. Hope you enjoy next league ;).
I might be a noob, but the charm of the game (IMO) is to make use of what i can find along the way. That's why i wouldn't recommend a newbie to start trading and min-maxing on their first few characters. Still, kinda glad that there are guides for people that just want to safely power through the game with a meta build. I thought these tips would be like: "If you need a few Chromatic Orbs, try searching for it's recipe equipment on the weapon/armor shops."
I would add to the recipes section , that the chromatic orb recipe is really useful early on, I got to 400 chromatic orbs(around 55 chaos orbs) by the time I reached 75. The recipe is an item with at least 3 linked sockets with at least 3 different colours. Loot filters will show these items, just dont miss out on them . :)
good to add, it is really helpfull and you can store all the chromatics you later need to recollor your own sockets without need of buying anything... i just take all small 3-color-linked items untill lvl 65-75, depending on my speed and needs (i leave chestpieces and big weapons, they take too much space)
I'll add that it helps a lot to get them, early on in the league, you can trade them favorably for chaos, and get your gear for maps easily with the 100 or so you catch from act 1 to 10.
^^^^ This, tbh i have already watched like 10 guides on this game and there isn't a single one that covers everything a new player should actually know, it's impossible to just watch a guide on POE and actually know what you are doing, this game is just too big for a single guide to handle it
I'm one of those players that quit Diablo after Blizzcon 2018. Loving PoE so far, was already following some of these suggestions, and picked up some new ones. In Act 8 now with an Arc Witch.
I started getting my ass handed to me on my Witch in act 6. I'm using my own build but I think it's time to look one up until I get a better grasp of it, but I too was going for lightning spells and summons too.
@sc2umsmaker My first character was a summoner witch and I mostly taunted monsters with arc and the minions did the job of bashing them to pieces when they came to see where the lightning came from.
yosharian Honestly, if you don’t want to install or use websites then this really isn’t a game for you. Poe is largely dependent on third party resources, new players have to either adapt and use them, or they won’t have a fun time.
@@MCHAIRY1 As someone who has played several games like this, including PoE (very casually) over the years, what's the point of Poe? To just grind, and get loot so you can continue grinding for better loot, what's the end game here? Where is the "Fun" part of this game?
huehue123 huehue123 It may seem like that, but it’s really complex and fun when you get into end game. Basically there’s maps, T1-15, you grind to get better gear and skill points to be able to take on the higher tier maps, they get really hard so you’ve always got something to strive for and that keeps you motivated to play. Once you get to T15’s they have a chance to drop special T16 maps, there’s 4 of them and each has a unique boss at the end. When you beat them all you can take on the big boss, and have a chance to drop his really powerful unique item. On top of bossing, there’s a marketplace to make money, to buy better gear for your build or for future builds, so another fun aspect is crafting rare items to get something valuable and selling for profit. Really there’s so much layers I can only do so much to explain, you need to experience it yourself.
@@MCHAIRY1 what if I want to start playing this on ps4 when it comes out? Meaning I literally wont be able to install 3rd party apps/mods/scripts? Are they that crucial that eventually the ps4 version will be unplayable at the end?

that 1st char is shit is very true, I have been playing PoE for two weeks so 2nd char will probably live longer build guides - currently following some tornado shot one :) resists - they are more important than damage I guess because how do i kill if I'm dead, right? vendor recipes - I remember like three already loot filter - I love this funcionality and really very helpful trade - not yet, but maybe in future great video btw
You forgot the other important newbie trap game mechanic similar to Cap Your Resists, its called Path of Lifenodes. Common mistake with new players is not building enough Life, and then getting destroyed from Act 6 onwards. I've found it helpful giving a "minimum recommended" life amounts for new players so they can keep that in mind when putting points in the stat tree. Like Act 5 Kitava 1400, Act 10 Kitava 3100, Merciless Izaro 4000 and so on.
True, i always go for at least 150% inc. life in passive tree, with melee builds i tend to 180%+ ... you can list it directly either in Path of Building or just Poeplanner website. Also, never go Energy shield as first build!
I just deleted a character last night I couldn't fix. I built a damage arc which solo cast, and had 3k health, 600 shield at lvl 76, max resists and would pop when a boss looked at me. Finally gave up and deleted it. Sometimes its so dependant on gear and the tree that you can't win and theres less frustration in staritng over then fixing it with chasing gear and skill reworks.
@@Meitti I had 3 of my ascendancies done but I couldn't do the 4th. I know i was short on health but couldn't afford the gear upgrades, had no currency, and my talent tree was just slightly off. And there was at least 1 gem i didn't have that made the build really work for me. Next season.
I never understood this "get all the lifenodes hurr durr" shinenigan. Yeah life is important but around 4k is more than enough and you get that from cheap shit items and few nodes.
I gotta say I´ve never been so proud of myself for finishing a games story without any guides or external help than I am with POE...now I´m just gobbling up every guide I can find to do a playthrough with a build thats actually able to do some endgame stuff! :D
I Uninstalled & Reinstalled the game over 10 times before I hit lvl 10. My first character was self-made Frost Blade and it was garbage af :D I talked to a lot of people and they helped me out and taught & explained a lot to me.
New players should know that flasks are a massive part of their DPS and, unless if you are running Mind Over Matter or a Zerphi's, should not be running mana flasks at all
I agree, but for new players you took it a step to far. They don't need to know about MoM etc at the beginning, and they will definitely need mana flasks most of the time during their first playthrough.
Great video man, very detailed. To add, for new/intermediate players (in trade league): 1) If you have a problem with labyrinths, go to www.poelab.com/. They have a tool called poelab compass and provide different information to guide you through. 2) Eventually you'll have to sell your stuffs to other players for profit. You need to buy a premium stash tab using real-life money. It is totally worth it. 3) If you are really new to the game, be careful in attempting to use a currency into an item if you don't know what you are doing. Some notable examples are: - Slamming an exalted orbs to low-end items. - Using divine orbs to cheap uniques. - Using orb of fusings to 6-link a non end-game items. - Using chromatic orbs to get multiple off-colored sockets. In short, dont blow up your currencies, specially at low levels. At earlier stage, minimize the use of currencies to upgrade your gears. Use the bulk of your currencies for a very large upgrades at a later stage. You are better off saving/selling your currencies and just buy the items you needed, but this is always not the case. currency.poe.trade/ is very helpful for trading currencies. 4) Level up additional gems in your secondary weapon set. Check out poe.ninja/challenge/skill-gems to see which gems are worth leveling up. 5) Don't screw up your gears if you don't have a backup plan. Some notable examples are: - Trying to upgrade from 5-link to 6-link. Sometimes you will end up with less links than your original one. - Trying to corrupt an item for a better implicit mod. Worst case scenario, the item will brick and becomes unusable at all. Don't forget that one screwed up item might screw up your entire set or even your entire build. 6) Watch out for items that have red+blue+green linked together and items with 6 sockets. Loot them, they are worth selling to any NPC.
Thanks for your awesome contribution! For some reason TH-cam tagged your comment as spam, so I had to manually approve it. These are all super great tips that easily could have made it into the video, but I could only fit so many. That being said, I think the importance of leveling a second set of skill gems is pretty high, and I kind of regret not putting that one in somewhere.
I have played now several characters in the last 3 leagues between lvl 70-94 ... i now know these informations ... but hell yeah ... if i would have known this earlier ... ♥ very nice guide!
Thanks for this guide! I started playing during the quarantine, and most of the "beginner guides" out there assume a basic working knowledge of verbiage and content. Even just looking up a first build, I was assaulted by all the different tags (lab, delve, etc.) the only thing that saved my sanity was many years of endgame wow.
Easy tip for beginners: 1) Use Summoner “witch” 2) Type “minion” in the search bar when you’re buying gems so you know what to focus on. 3) Type “minion” in the search bar when you’re upgrading your passives in passive tree to see where all passive minion skills are and just focus on pathing to them all. 4) You don’t need super defense, just find armor and weapons that can compliment your minions. 5) stand in the back and let your army wipe out everything in the front. 6) You will definitely finish the game with this build and you can farm up necessary items to use the Build guides when making a new character.
Anthony Tosh You still have 2 months to find out more about the game. Its sad, but there is a delay for the PS4 release. Explanation: www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/2253521 but waiting 2 months for PS4 release is still better than getting a mobile game :p

Tip : If you want some one to reply quicker when trading, First turn on timestamps in your settings, next After you pasted your whisper in game wait a few seconds, up to a minute. Then whisper the person you want to trade with, "you there?" And usually you will get a response as the trader usually doesn't use timestamps, and will think that you've been waiting a while. I do this so I know it works.
If a game needs this kind of "high-profile" efficiency tips to be playable, it stops being a game...Or at least a casually-fun one.. I don't think PoE needs this kind of efficiency, except if you are a hardcore competitive gameplay junkie, looking for leaderboard-wrecking crap. I have to say, any kind of New players coming here looking to get good tips to play a fun game is not gonna leave this page getting what they wanted/needed..
I completely agree. Maybe I just prefer something more casual. I can't be arsed, in this day and age, to spend hours having someone else tell me how to play a game just to make a game playable. The game is simply not for me then.

and yet the self-proclaimed hardcore players tend to get butt-hurt when some one says just this. they refuse to understand that not many grownups have 5 - 6 hours a day to learn all those complex stuff.
The "Phys damage to a weapon" with a rustic sash is the most important vendor recipe for new players. And the chaos recipe is a newb trap because rings and amulets by themselves can sell for 1-10 chaos with a simple crafted mod (and you don't have to carry around all the other junk).
Except that 90% of them will never sell because of how bad they are. It's only worth it at level 76+, where you can actually start having interesting values.
Loot filter a touchy subject, yea I agree. While Filterblade have all the functions available, I prefer to construct my own filter, cuz I don't like 3000+ lines of codes, when i can just do it with 300 or less. Using Notepad / FilterMaster to customize is faster than Filterblade when the code is just so short. Often time there is sudden need of some minor changes for some specific needs, be it personal needs or economy changes, it is far faster to DIY rather than relying/waiting for Filterblade to update their version...
Some 'newb traps' I see from time to time: -Regarding the passive tree, damage isn't everything (in fact it's often the least important thing to prioritize). -Don't think of the starting classes as archetypic roles or classes. They are nothing more than a starting point on the passive tree and do not define or limit the type of character you will play. -This game has a lot of depth. Do NOT measure your learning curve against those who have played this game for hundreds/thousands of hours. Be comfortable with your ignorance and learn at your own pace. I had a buddy telling me everything I needed to know and I honestly forgot 90% of everything he said until I learned it for myself. You're not going to be able to soak in advice/tips at face value and become a wiz at this game. You still need to put in the time and that's okay.
I just started playing on ps4 as a Templar.. Just hit Act 6 yesterday.. Havent had any issues yet and its my first character. Only just now running into Legendary enemies that are almost too strong. Using two handed maces and a lot of summoning abilities. Who needs multiplayer when you have 25+ minions lmao
Hi, veteran player here, but THANKS !!! Thanks SO DAMN MUCH for the little bit of etiquette you are trying to convey to new players. (talking about the whole buying/selling process here) Nothing more annoying than an impatient player opening 25 trade requests in 20 secs because you're still exchanging with another "customer".
Never.. repeat... I NEVER create prescribed/required builds in these games like PoE, Diablo, Guild Wars etc. even means unfinished game. I can´t enjoy game as fucking SHEEP! Always playing with my own builds.
The whole "Your first charater will suck" would not have been a problem if there was a reliable way to at least get one respec once you're closer to endgame. It realy ruins the fun of the new player experience when you realize that you can't "try things out and have fun with it" but pretty much HAVE to go looking up some guide where someone tells you to "Do it this way or you will fail." It's realy bad game design.
Maybe eventually! I think with all the new D3 players, beginner guides are probably more important right now, but I'll definitely consider that in the future.
I actually had a bad time to figure how to trade when i began. All the hideout stuff and so on... First time i watch somebody explaning that. Really really really useful for new players. Great Job Nathan!
So lets recap.... but seriously tell me this isn't describing a completely fucking broken game ... LOL 1) You will horribly fail at this game on your first character 2) You will fail so hard you will not even finish the story mode on your first character 3) Lower your expectation and prepare for an impassable difficulty spike 4) To avoid the above follow a pre-planed character you can find online 5) Go download Path of Building as you will learn more from it then actually playing the game. 6) Jack all you resists or prepare to be one shotted 7) Look up online your vendor combo selling / crafting recipes 8) Go to another website and get a loot filter so you don't waste time picking up crap 9) To trade go to one of two other websites to see listed items 10) Open chat with the player you want to trade with and then prepare to be ignored 11) Finally download this other fucking trade maco program, figure out how to use it, and somehow this fucking improves your trading experience 12) Launch some fucking script and it will help you navigate your fucked up inventory and make sure your not getting ripped off on trades 13) But be careful as after all that bullshit you'll still likely get inaccurate fucking info 14) Learn to manage and collect the two dozen different trade currencies 15) And remember after all this you can just start over if you fuck up your build or find you are getting horribly owned
Classy Highlights ... ROTFL ... don't have to ask me twice ... but if this video was intended to bring in new players ..it works better to steer new player away
Dont think this video was intended to bring in new players. There's a difference in a video for new players and a video for potential new players, this video is the former. Many people who look for tips/guides are normally already playing the game and are looking for help in their new characters. If you are someone who hasn't touched the game you'd find a gameplay video instead to see how the game is like. That being said this video does make it seem hard on new players since you'll have to "download this program" or "follow some build" however do remember that these are just tips that experienced players find are useful and in no way do you have to follow if you find it troublesome. I've played this game since beta and I have never used the trade macro nor do I have a premium stash tab to sell items. PoE isn't a broken game, it's amazingly well made it just have a steep learning curve for new players. Honestly, act 1 through 10 is a cakewalk once you're familiar with the game.
What the Dev should do is try a little experiment ... for the SOLO self Find League they should make re-specing completely free to allow players to change there build plan based on what they find and then see what happens to their League participation .. as players will flock to what's more rewarding and fum to play. I'd reload the game in an instant .. someone give me a ring if that happens.
been playing on and off from alpha to breach and then a little more after breach and I still feel like a new player and still have to watch these kinda guides
Nice video! Although in one point I think you are wrong. If you are about to buy something and you join the sellers hideout, its actually considered rude to trade him. Always give him time to search for the item and don't poke him with trade requests - and wait until he trades you.
It has been a few years since I last played POE, but I didn't find it all that complex or challenging to build my first character. The skill tree is quite self-explanatory and I think it is common sense to focus on certain strengths and not get distracted, which is quite easy the way the skill tree is built. My first character was a Necromancer and I knew from the start that I would focus on getting the most and strongest minions possible and then invest the surplus skill points into mana and energy shield. The result was a pretty min-maxed character, as far as I can tell. I had enough skill points to get all the minion-related skills and then some. When I checked back into the game a while ago, after a long absence, I noticed my skill tree was reset and I was refunded all the skill points and would have to spend them anew if I were to play again. So I assume they must have made some bigger changes to warrant that. Whether what I said about the skill tree is totally obsolete now and it suddenly is a cryptic puzzle, I don't know. However, I did successfully play through the story mode on the first attempt with that character, but that doesn't mean I didn't run into issues. What I found challenging was that the boss of the labyrinth was really hard to fight with my character. Even though I had invested a lot of spare points into "energy shield" and didn't want my character to be a glass cannon, the guy kept one-shotting me and I had to kite and run around like crazy every time I fought him. Even stopping for a second to cast a spell or summon a new skeleton meant instant death. When I later befriended some other players with barbarian and rogue characters, they seemed to have no problems with the guy and the last 2 times I fought him, I only defeated him because they helped me. The issue with that was that the A.I. of my minions wasn't good enough. They stupidly kept running after my kiting character instead of fighting the boss or his mobs. It is quite a problem when your character is fragile and easy to kill to offset that your minions are so strong and tough, but then your minions don't fight because the A.I. isn't up to the task. So that is quite a balancing problem, especially since that is such a important boss, whom you have to fight again and again throughout a play-through. Only a few of the story line bosses were anywhere near as hard to defeat as that guy.
Yep Diablo Immortal brought me here, but with the new update I saw PoE was coming to PS4! So glad because my pc is busted and really wanted to dive into this game. Saw your budget build for Gladiator and now Im here! Awesome guides!!
Thanks for your comment! I think Gladiator is in a really good/maybe even undervalued place right now, so I'm glad you saw that guide. As always, feel free to ask questions in the comment sections of any of my videos as you make your way through the complex world of Path of Exile.
I like the encouragement. I made this decision on my own after hearing from pretty much any fucking "noob-guide" out there that I "definitely(!)" should follow a build-guide. A build-guide that I, as a noob, hardly understand and itÄs already clear I wont get any deeper knowledge of the game cause I would just follow someone and don't even know WHY!? What's the fun part of the game? Why do I want "high clear-speed"? Is that good? Why do I want to farm currency? What else is there to do? - "Welcome to my beginner-guide. Let's make sure you have a good start into league" ehm, okay. Well..."what's a league?" ... and so on. So, again: thanks for sharing your opinion it helps me to not get frustrated. Cheers and sorry for any grammar mistakes, it's a second language :)
Ugh, I thought this was a noob guide, but the amount of information here is just daunting. :( I think if PoE is really so complex I'll just pass. As someone who has never played PoE before, so far I think this game is asking way too much from a casual player.
PoE can definitely be complex if you try to go it alone, but the simple act of using a build guide or watching a couple videos like this one will do wonders for your first playthrough as painless as possible.
I think you're asking too much from yourself. Nobody has a firm grasp of everything there is to know when they start this game and not even once they've invested hundreds of hours. The big secret is you don't need to know everything. Most of what there is to know won't apply specifically to any 1 character you play. You'll make mistakes and hopefully learn what to do better next time; That's the essence of any game that offers depth or difficulty; How does one get better at a game like Dark Souls? They die a lot - But repeated deaths doesn't mean the game isn't worth playing. Seeing your success grow from your own application of lessons learned can be very fulfilling. Nothing in this video needs to be understood and adopted by the player from the first minute of the game. You don't need to focus on trading until you're doing end-game activities (or not at all if you don't want to). Loot filters can be added or adjusted simply when you're tired of seeing a bunch of loot you know you'll never pick up. The point is to be okay with the fact that you won't know everything you'll want to know. We all learn this game from the same starting point. It irks me when new players say "I wasted my entire first character because I didn't know what I was doing" - That first character was a lesson learned. That's not a waste in the grand scope of this game and it's the reason why players build a foundation of knowledge that no new player can have when they start. We all put in the time to get where we are now which is why I opened with "you're asking too much from yourself".
@@atreidestw damn, these were some inspiring words! I've always wanted to try a true RPG since I couldn't finish Diablo II after WoW came out, and now Blizzard fucked up with Immortal. I guess I'll give PoE a shot.
@@t3chn0dr0n3 Do not give up. I went into the game and immediately felt overwhelmed. Then, I realised it is just an RPG and I can still have fun with a different approach to something like D3. POE may have depth and complexity (which is good for later on), but I can still have fun while I slowly learn about it. My starting point was reading a good guide: Enki arc witch. I followed it exactly and it helped a ton because it was VERY detailed. I also invested some time taking notes and slowly reading about different aspects and systems in the game. Now, I know very little, but just enough to make my build work well (thanks to that guide). More importantly I was having a ton of fun.
This was actually the first arpg I played so it was a bit overwhelming at first. Sites like Poebuilds are so so so helpful. It's true that if you try to wing it on the first go, your endgame will be very difficult, which isn't necessarily a bad thing because you learn from it. Part of what I like about this game is that you can put soooooo much time into it. There are so many builds to try, you can become a full time trader which is what I did for a lot of the abyss league, and PoE is constantly adding new content! It seems like a lot, and overwhelming because there is a lot you can do! I have friends that only play for a couple hours at a time, just chipping away at it, and they still have a blast. It's a really fun game, and to boot, it's free!
Even after playing for years, for me the hardest part is getting enough resists and life on my gear/tree while still doing enough damage for the build to be viable. Delve was the most successful league I've had in the game with a good Toxic Rain build, but damn if it still isn't a pain.
As a guy with over 2000 hours in POE I can help out by saying this. I have 2128 hours and I still don't know everything, I dont have to in order to play the game. It's not like diablo were people on the second day of the season min/max and everyone pushing plays the same build. It's a dynamic game that allows for you to make a character that can keep up with the top builds or in rare cases, even beat the top builds. Figure out how the skill gems and the passive tree work and make a build and work on it until it works for you. Play the game with people, it's a fun game without them but wiping with a party could be particularly funny if you dont take it all too seriously. Day one only matters to racers and neckbeards. You dont have to join in on day one, I find myself busy with work and family that I dont come into a league until maybe a few weeks into it. Day one only matters for those of the hardcore fanatics and the culty neckbeards who are rude to others because of the pain they cause themselves. In conclusion path of exile is a fun game that you can be creative on with your build and once you figure out the skills and the passives, a few mates and you learn to ignore the neckbeards and the racers( although fun to watch this is what they do for a living so I doubt any new/'casual' players can play that much.)your time will excel with much joy. And remember, praise the great toucan daily for good drops in global chat ;)
Personally,. as a new player, day 1 is awesome because there *aren't* any guides for it. I get to learn along with everyone else. Being able to ask things in global and having everyone go "I have no fucking clue but this is awesome lmao" was honestly really, really fun. It felt like a collaborative effort to work out a puzzle, and now that it's been a few days, everyone is starting to min max the league already.
I made it to level 60 something before hitting this dps/survival check with my first character you're talking about. I was cruising along wiping out droves with little effort. My build was simple, caster using frost bolt greater multi support and spell echo. Was shooting 14 blobs of death per cast. Probably pretty basic to you guys reading but I thought I was pretty bad ass at the time. Herald of ice, hatred and another aura I can't remember. Almost all of my mana was reserved, had enough mana to cast 2 maybe 3 spells before being oom, but my regen was fast enough I could just spam waves of ice bolts. This game blows my mind sometimes. Like, in the good way.
I played 900h and im still a noob. I dont rush trough story... so i need 7-10 h to play throug. I never killed über Elder. But this game got me. Its better from season to season. Sice i got the macros, i make 10 times more currency. That was last season. Got far much to discover. see ya in Betrayal
This video is WAY too indepth for new players. If youre a new player, just go play the game! Yes your character will suck and you might get stuck at some point, but youll have fun along the way, and if you didnt, then the game might just not be for you.
getting stuck and not being able to finish the game will most likely just make you ragequit this and is a terrible advice in my opinion as this entire game is about preparation and not just jumping into it like many other ARPG players think to be honest i would qualify this game to be more of a strategy than a classic hack and slash
@@andrejoss475 When do you 'finish' poe exactly? Aside from the fact that this game doesnt really have a finish, it is extremely unlikely a new player wont get stuck on their first character at some point. So if thats going to happen anyway, just roll with it and enjoy playing the game, instead of being overwhelmed by guides and tools before you even start playing, which I guarantee will scare off many more players.
@@45640uberfreak Being able to kill the final boss, the strongest enemy counts as finishing a game, imagine playing skyrim all the way to the end but you would be unable to beat the final quest just because you didn't know where to put your points or playing mario and you wouldn't be able to even get to bowser because you somehow played the game incorrectly but noone and nothing told you that the entire time, the game just slaps that into your face at the very end to me that would be quite an unsatisfying end and i would very much rather spend an hour or more learning the game before i start playing it
I finally downloaded the game. Got to level 29 after about 8 hours while following a very nice Marauder build. Without the build guide I would be stuck staring at this skill wheel for hours without making a decision...This game really brings me back to Diablo 2; while introducing way more complexity character options than Diablo ever could.
Physical damage recipe - sell normal weapon together with blacksmith's whetstone and magic or rare rustic sash. You gonna get the same weapon with +% to physical damage (I believe somewhere between 50 and 70%). Two tips considering this, first, you can check the percentage you'll be getting out of the recipe, so if you have few pieces of the same weapon, pick one with highest %. Second you should whetstone the weapon before trading it in, quality on it stays after trading, and improving white weapon only requires 4 whetstones, it's especially useful when you're just starting with first character of the league.
Trading in Poe is the worse experience I ever seen in my life. Its all wrong and it´s "ok", because it´s wrong for so long time that they are used to it. I will never agree with that system. Great video.
@@SamFortalCE That's a terrible idea.. It would destroy niche rares people look for. The only things being sold would be super meta items that go quickly.
Just try it! It's free! Stick to the part of the skill tree where your class start and you will be fine. You don't need all these to play decently at this game.
Quick tip: If you get into Maps and want to make some MONEY fast, chain random maps as fast as you can. You will get alot more money this way than with the chaos recipe because you can sell items like fusing and jewellers (from six sockets). And if you want to get even more look into shaping your atlas that's where all the money is. ;)
2:25 That... is not a skill tree. No. That is a fucking skill jungle. Thank you for showing me this, I'm deleting the game immediately, because I don't want to commit a doctoral thesis on how to play a fucking video game I do for fun. This is why I jumped from DnD 3.5 to Pathfinder FFS... (yes, there is an actual thesis on metamagic for DnD 3.5).
The skill tree is actually a lot more simple to understand than it was earlier on in the game's life. If it's still too much, you might be interested in Grim Dawn. More complexity and build variety than Diablo 3 but not at the level of complexity that is PoE
I agree, the skill tree can be extremely daunting at first. However, I would hardly say you need a doctoral thesis (or even much of a brain at all, if you follow a build guide) to understand it, just patience and some natural curiosity.
@@nathanbrotherbob If I follow a build guide, how is that different than from simply playing a pre-determined class? Well, I can deviate from the guide, unwittingly crippling my character. That's... not an option I want to have. And I don't need to understand it on a level to write a thesis? Are you sure? Hmm. www.reddit.com/r/pathofexile/comments/4bbntn/aegis_thesis_4_different_options/
I'm not sure why you're linking a 2 year old reddit post, but the word "thesis" isn't even being correctly used here. All this guy wants is feedback on which build to play- he just formatted his question horribly. As for how following a build guide is different from playing a pre-determined class, I'd say you've got me there. It's really not lol. The only major difference is you chose to do so, which means once you learn more about the game and feel ready, you're free to embrace the awesome flexibility of the skill tree and do your own thing!
@@SnlDrako basically the tree is split in nodes that give you stats and get you somewhere, give you damage, or give you defense, and a few unique nodes, once you know that, you can just look what unique nods you want, and make a line that passes through as much defense as you can and grabs enough offense, and if that uses too many points you start cutting down stuff till you have enough points.
It’s rewarding and fun. Maybe it’s not for you, you see, the other day I heard a game for casuals like yourself. Fortnite it’s called, you should give it a try, or diablo 3, that also works.
Just try it! It's free and it's awesome. You don't need all these to play the game or finish the story-line. The story line is nice and the final boss is very nice (contrary to the anorexic Diablo in D3). The skill system is interesting and allow you to customize a skill in a lot of way. It also changes your perspective on loot : ie. an item with a lot of skill links is better than a legendary item with no link. For the huge skill trees, just use common senses (avoid increasing ONLY constitution on your mage) and explore it just a little, and you'll be fine.
The way people talk about this game makes it seem more like a job than to have fun. When I first started the game, I stated how using a build guide seems like it takes out all of the fun of playing and discovering things yourself, and I was immediately met with a wall of insults and "have fun dying" from global chat. I get that it might be harder later on, but the community really sucks at encouraging new players.
Don't let ass holes get to you. Besides, it really depends on who's on. Sometimes, the global chat will be filled with some really nice and helpful people. Other times, you get some of those trolls.
Global chat during prime time is often toxic. The best suggestion I can give you if you want to use the global chat is to type "/global 5055" into your chat window. That's a channel of the global chat that was made for the reddit community. There's way more helpful people in there and it's generally a lot less toxic than global 1-30. The best advice I can give you if you don't want to copy a build is to figure out a skill you wanna use, look at a couple of builds to get a feel for what clusters on the skill tree are the most important, explanations of mechanics, etc, then you can make informed decisions while creating your own build :-)
As a new player with only 1 character (lvl 36) I feel every new class needs to be explored ineffectively to get a feel of its range. Use all the powers you come across, switch regularly, and you'll learn what you like/dislike, what works and what doesn't, and how you want to specialize in your next one. As a witch I'm still deciding between elemental or necro. Also I use dual wield wands, but I don't spec into the passives that give bonuses to those yet as I'm expecting high level gear to completely change my playstyle.
Best way to start is just to start. The early game provides lots of room to test out different skills so it becomes trial and error. Just take it from there and as you go along you can just look up certain things you don't understand
@@ArminiuSithus The passive tree acts like a stat booster (more health, extra damage etc) and has special nodes that gives special bonuses like (e.g Your attacks never miss but you don't do critical strikes) you can reallocate these with orb of regrets (very expensive early on) and respec points ( you get them from certain quests) Your actual skills comes from skill gems. Which can be purchased from vendors or obtained from quest rewards or dropped as loot from monsters. Once you place the gem into a socket on your gear you gain that ability. So you can easily try them all out and see which suits you. Then when you're ready to commit to it. You can start figuring out which passives can best benefit your character. Health passives is always important in most cases
It's gonna sound dumb, but if you're starting as Duelist/Ranger/Shadow it doesn't matter what your build is. Pick up a bow and Shrapnel Shot. The skill has the arrow + cone to double it's damage. 2 Iron rings + Added Cold/Fire, it'll get you to lvl12 easy even without related passive allocated. (lvl12 is where the first fun skills are)
Corrupted is like a one-try gambling to get special/extra modifications, but with the risk of destroying the item (or not making any change). It's one-try, because once it's corrupted, you can't modify it anymore (except sockets/links, with max level Vorici craftbench). Also, a corrupted chest drops corrupted items, which have a higher chance of having extra sockets and links (statistically easier to get 6-links over many tries).
Great list! I played this game on and off for years (only 273 hours played though and mostly ssf) and still learned new stuff. With next league I will first time not play hardcore ssf, but normal. So it's time to learn this trading stuff and evaluating prices.
So I am currently looking up beginners guides while I am playing through Act 4 on my first playthrough. I always feel like these guides are tailored to people who are done with the story.
Best advice for noobs: link your favorite spell projectile gem with fork. Now cast that at enemies. Once you begin to understand the potential value of support gems, you'll understand how important it is to learn how each support gem works. Too difficult/want to kill enemies easily? No problem: Link 'fireball' to 'fork' as well as either 'lesser multiple projectiles' or 'greater multiple projectiles' (but not to both). Then link 'freezing pulse' to 'increased critical strikes' and 'increased critical damage'. You can link more supports to either of these if you have enough linked gem slots available. Now you can kill huge groups of enemies with fireball, or strong bosses with freezing pulse. Alternatively, anything that strongly resists one spell may be killed with the other spell. There are many other successful strategies and classes, but this will net you enough damage to play up to the end of the story. The next best advice is to focus your passives on a defensive build. You'll want passives that boost your defenses, life, or damage, in that order of preference. When you get the hang of linking support gems properly, you'll never again have to struggle with not doing enough damage (unless you're weapon-based and need to upgrade your weapon), so what you'll notice first about high-level enemies is that they also have little difficulty killing you. Recommended defensive setups for beginners: * Armor only * Armor and Energy Shield * Evasion and Energy Shield Any defensive setup must also be paired with maxed fire, lightning, and cold resists. Getting extra above max is also useful. You can get resists most easily on rings, amulets, and belts without sacrificing other important attributes. You can also save many of them in your stash to pull out later when fixing up your resistances. Try to max out your resists by level 40. Keep checking it as you go to higher acts, because there will be act effects which reduce your resists by some amount. Lastly, the most common way players die to high-level enemies is from reflected damage. You'll have to look online for tips to mitigate that, but I'm mentioning it here because it's difficult to figure out what's happening when all you see is one moment you're creaming the enemies, and the next you're dead for no apparent reason. If that happens, it was most likely reflected damage. More defenses than damage will help you resist reflected damage. By the time you're an expert player, you'll be using a wide variety of auras, minions, and other special skills, but you don't need to fuss over learning these. Take them one step at a time and just try using them yourself. Rule of thumb: any time a guide says to use something and you don't know what it is, just try it out yourself. Abandon the guide for a moment and just play the game. Once you come back to the guide, it'll make a lot more sense.
You're a saint for making this. I've been really getting into this game (after dabbling on and off since 2014) and this has been so incredibly helpful.
Awesome guide, ty gained a few helpful pointers. This game isn't new-player friendly, but once you sucked into it, its has very nice gameplay and its story written very well . But, at some point it isn't really free( without buying stash tabs( currency, essence, fragments and etc.) you'll find out quickly that you out of room in your stash)).
This game is light years behind the times. Not being able to fully respec or revert ascension choices is an archaic and horrible design. It's no surprise that player retention sucks and they've been forced to free console offering. Not to mention, their prices for cosmetics are absolutely ridiculous.

You have 24 free character slots and an option to delete. Failure is totally an option
Theres alot of noobs out there!!?!?

That's why i wouldn't recommend a newbie to start trading and min-maxing on their first few characters.
Still, kinda glad that there are guides for people that just want to safely power through the game with a meta build.
I thought these tips would be like:
"If you need a few Chromatic Orbs, try searching for it's recipe equipment on the weapon/armor shops."
You always need chromatic orbs, I've had games where most of my wealth came from the chromatic orb recipe.
@@KisameBG the 3 different color need to be linked.
@@KisameBG Thats not true.
good to add, it is really helpfull and you can store all the chromatics you later need to recollor your own sockets without need of buying anything... i just take all small 3-color-linked items untill lvl 65-75, depending on my speed and needs (i leave chestpieces and big weapons, they take too much space)

@@MCHAIRY1 please point out where I said that I wasn't interested in installing 3rd party apps or reading up on the game.
huehue123 huehue123 It may seem like that, but it’s really complex and fun when you get into end game.

Lvl 33 Ranger and I haven't played PoE since 2012! Time flies. I'm such an old timer. Thank you for the excellent tips.
@@Ev3rM0r3 Which boss? Merciless Izaro requires 4k health in total before you can safely fight him.
My first character was self-made Frost Blade and it was garbage af :D
I talked to a lot of people and they helped me out and taught & explained a lot to me.
seems about right, poe is a game I played in 1.1 up to "act 5" (which was act 2, second difficulty), and I came back to it in 2.0.
the game is actually not that complicated, but your guide made it very complicated.
As an intermediate player i knew all these things, but GREAT tips for new players.
9:48 that volatile dodging skills :D
Sometimes you need to assert your dominance
Great video man, very detailed. To add, for new/intermediate players (in trade league):
1) If you have a problem with labyrinths, go to www.poelab.com/.
Some notable examples are:
- Slamming an exalted orbs to low-end items.
Some notable examples are:
- Trying to upgrade from 5-link to 6-link.
Number 1 tip I would have needed on the first character was the difference between increased and more xD

Big mistake since you could have found a better joke
Easy tip for beginners:
1) Use Summoner “witch”
2) Type “minion” in the search bar when you’re buying gems so you know what to focus on.
So, do what I wanted to do? (Necro build)
Fun! :D
rofl instant like for the passive-aggressive immortal reference at the start XD
Well I'll be a noob and on ps4. Someone pray for me
I'll pray for you having fun ;)
Anthony Tosh You still have 2 months to find out more about the game. Its sad, but there is a delay for the PS4 release. Explanation: www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/2253521 but waiting 2 months for PS4 release is still better than getting a mobile game :p
@@noodleknight7924 Cool. Started Witch Necro just today. And I'm having fun aiming for minion build in the skill tree.

Yep same here. Why read boring guides when you can have fun playing the game
I think for many D3 players who ran enough rat runs POE is the perfect challenge

While Filterblade have all the functions available, I prefer to construct my own filter,
cuz I don't like 3000+ lines of codes, when i can just do it with 300 or less. Using Notepad / FilterMaster to customize is faster than Filterblade when the code is just so short.
Often time there is sudden need of some minor changes for some specific needs, be it personal needs or economy changes, it is far faster to DIY rather than relying/waiting for Filterblade to update their version...
Playing this game really makes me appreciate people who made those guides. They really put the time in lol
been playing for a year now and since i already know most of this, im finally happy to call myself an intermediate player. :D
800+ hours, still feeling like a noob :D
I would also suggest saving every flask you find.
3 flasks sell for 1 flask of a better quality [ 3 small life flasks -----------$> 1 medium flask ]
Some 'newb traps' I see from time to time:
-Regarding the passive tree, damage isn't everything (in fact it's often the least important thing to prioritize).
This is actually the most useful and helpful new/intermediate player friendly guide I've found on youtube. Thank you.
I just started playing on ps4 as a Templar.. Just hit Act 6 yesterday.. Havent had any issues yet and its my first character. Only just now running into Legendary enemies that are almost too strong. Nothing more annoying than an impatient player opening 25 trade requests in 20 secs because you're still exchanging with another "customer".
great vid! i hope to learn much from this game. still can't believe this thing's free to play.
Im new to the game and played by using a build. Was able to do the story, but this guide is awesome! So much information, thank you!
Never..
It realy ruins the fun of the new player experience when you realize that you can't "try things out and have fun with it" but pretty much HAVE to go looking up some guide where someone tells you to "Do it this way or you will fail."
It's realy bad game design.
I knew all of these things, and I'm still a noob. More advance tips please :D
LOL
1) You will horribly fail at this game on your first character
2) You will fail so hard you will not even finish the story mode on your first character
3) Lower your expectation and prepare for an impassable difficulty spike
4) To avoid the above follow a pre-planed character you can find online
5) Go download Path of Building as you will learn more from it then actually playing the game.
6) Jack all you resists or prepare to be one shotted
7) Look up online your vendor combo selling / crafting recipes
8) Go to another website and get a loot filter so you don't waste time picking up crap
9) To trade go to one of two other websites to see listed items
10) Open chat with the player you want to trade with and then prepare to be ignored
11) Finally download this other fucking trade maco program, figure out how to use it, and somehow this fucking improves your trading experience
12) Launch some fucking script and it will help you navigate your fucked up inventory and make sure your not getting ripped off on trades
13) But be careful as after all that bullshit you'll still likely get inaccurate fucking info
14) Learn to manage and collect the two dozen different trade currencies
15) And remember after all this you can just start over if you fuck up your build or find you are getting horribly owned
LOL great post, this describes my thoughts right now perfectly.. Going with grim dawn, PoE is a full time job in nerdism.
Dude, do us a favor and stay away from PoE, u can go play diablo immortal
As a former D3 player still trying to figure this game out, thanks this vid is great.

Nice video! Although in one point I think you are wrong. If you are about to buy something and you join the sellers hideout, its actually considered rude to trade him. Always give him time to search for the item and don't poke him with trade requests - and wait until he trades you.
Agreed. Getting spammed with trade requests while you're looking for the item the guy wants is really annoying.
Some of these tips only work for PC players, so basically this guide ignores PS4 players etc.
As always, feel free to ask questions in the comment sections of any of my videos as you make your way through the complex world of Path of Exile.
playing blind is the best for this game, just experiences with diablo 1 and 2 will do... and some rpg basic knowledge.
Thanks man. I'm pretty new to PoE and this actually helped me a lot!

This video is WAY too indepth for new players. If youre a new player, just go play the game! Yes your character will suck and you might get stuck at some point, but youll have fun along the way, and if you didnt, then the game might just not be for you.
getting stuck and not being able to finish the game will most likely just make you ragequit this and is a terrible advice in my opinion as this entire game is about preparation and not just jumping into it like many other ARPG players think
to be honest i would qualify this game to be more of a strategy than a classic hack and slash
@@45640uberfreak Being able to kill the final boss, the strongest enemy counts as finishing a game, imagine playing skyrim all the way to the end but you would be unable to beat the final quest just because you didn't know where to put your points
or playing mario and you wouldn't be able to even get to bowser because you somehow played the game incorrectly but noone and nothing told you that the entire time, the game just slaps that into your face at the very end
to me that would be quite an unsatisfying end and i would very much rather spend an hour or more learning the game before i start playing it
I finally downloaded the game.

Second you should whetstone the weapon before trading it in, quality on it stays after trading, and improving white weapon only requires 4 whetstones, it's especially useful when you're just starting with first character of the league.
this is no way a "tip" for new players at all. Holy shit wtf?!

That... is not a skill tree.
This was amazingly helpful. I was stuck in analysis paralysis , keeping me from playing and this tips have helped a ton!
How is this a "fun" game when its more complicated than my essay ?
You kill monsters.
How would the game being more complicated than your essay make it less fun? The two aren't mutually exclusive.
I play POE b/c i have no phone :(
As a new player, i use the Enki guide for the Act part and use another build guide for my builds ;)!
I’m a new player on PS4 so 40% of this vid is worthless...
Best way to start is just to start. The early game provides lots of room to test out different skills so it becomes trial and error. Just take it from there and as you go along you can just look up certain things you don't understand
What do you mean test out? Are you able to take back points and put them on other skill paths?
@@ArminiuSithus The passive tree acts like a stat booster (more health, extra damage etc) and has special nodes that gives special bonuses like (e.g Your attacks never miss but you don't do critical strikes) you can reallocate these with orb of regrets (very expensive early on) and respec points ( you get them from certain quests)
Your actual skills comes from skill gems.
@@subtletruth4794 awesome! Thx for the super helpful tips!
@@ArminiuSithus You're welcome man!! Good luck :)
(lvl12 is where the first fun skills are)
What is corrupted? Im tired of guides for noobs what only experts understand. ...
PS4 hypppeeeee
PS4 release will come out early February, explanation for the delay: www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/2253521
Its sad, but its worth the waiting.
I’m okay with delays, it only means improvements
So I am currently looking up beginners guides while I am playing through Act 4 on my first playthrough. I always feel like these guides are tailored to people who are done with the story.
Best tip put it down and play something else
Just coming back to the game since around the time the player housing thing was added. Thanks for the refresher
Recommended defensive setups for beginners:
* Armor only
* Armor and Energy Shield
* Evasion and Energy Shield
Any defensive setup must also be paired with maxed fire, lightning, and cold resists.
