I might have an explanation for the breathing thing: So, I am a college tennis player, and I was curious why grunting seemed to help add pace to my serves. I saw a video a while ago explaining that studies had been done about tennis players grunting before they hit a serve or ground stroke, and how that actually DID add speed to the ball. In short, it’s because grunting (exhaling, just really fast and loud) engages the core muscles and stabilizes the whole body, keeping everything compact before exploding at the ball. I imagine it might be something similar with exhaling right before you putt... it engages the core a little bit, keeping your whole body engaged and everything in line where you want it to be. Thanks to those who stuck through this whole long winded comment 😅

Its also done in almost all martial arts both when getting hit and while hitting something. Its also done in shooting aswell but there its not really the grunt but holding your breath

I started using my stomach/core to initiate the start of my putting stroke. In really seemed to help my consistency and accuracy.
The benefit of pushing the disc forward with your stomach sound similar to the exhaling out and engaging the core.
It also helps with timing too by starting with the leg and body 1st then fishing with the arms and wrist last.

Don’t think about making the putt. Think about finishing your stroke. You should have the same stroke inside the circle, so If you go from point A to point B (your start to release point) successfully then you will make the putt.

Dude I LOVE the idea of this video. Plus of course I always appreciate how much effort you put in from the filmography and youtube creator side to even just practice putting to test this out (how genius to make a video where you literally just practice putt and you get to work on both youtube and disc golf!) +, all of these tips are pretty genius tips.

I putt with a hybrid between push and spin, maybe leaning more to spin nowadays. A tip I got from a friend was to curl my wrist before I start the putting motion rather than having my wrist straight when I start. This has helped me a lot with my concistency while putting.

I've watched this video a few times and had to report back that while I thought it was dumb at first, bringing the off-hand elbow back and breathing as I putt really helped my putting game this past weekend.

Alright I wanted to post a tip in the other videos but a lot of good ones came in.
Here is my tip for getting out of head during a round.
I often struggle with changing my putt during rounds or over thinking my putting retune. It oddly ties into the finger tip you shared in this video, although I had never heard of it.
When you need to reset your putt or wipe out the over thinking, focus only on the tips of your fingers, how they are on the disc and the spin off the fingertips. This is the last point of contact between you and your putt, focus only on that point and your body takes over. Simplifying it down allows you to reset, even during your round.

I go into "I'm a little teapot" stance with my off arm when I putt. It effectively puts my elbow back as in the tip here. The reason I started doing it though was to minimize any unnecessary motion in my putt. All my friends make fun of it, but I'm also thr best putter out of my friends so...

  • @matthewallan274
    @matthewallan274 3 ปีที่แล้ว

I consider this video a must-watch if you are looking to improve your putting. I implemented the elbow back and exhaling techniques and it greatly improved my putting, where before my comfortable range was within 20 ft and now I’m making 50% at 25-30 ft. The elbow trick really helped keep my putts straight and less yanking shots right on long putts. The exhale helped bring rhythm and confidence to my putting motion. Great video and content.

I think the off arm elbow tip squares or opens your chest to the target slightly. I will have to try it out more. I walk up to my putt and place my right foot behind mini. Then, put my left foot shoulderish width apart like I'm going to straddle putt, before taking a step back into stance. This also helps me Square up to the target better.

  • @Bigwooly
    @Bigwooly 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

The absolute best putting tip is to practice making putts.
Don't immediately start at 25 feet. It is extremely discouraging to go out to practice and then only make like 3% of your putts each time. Practice for where you are in your game and work towards better. I like to start at 15 feet and then only move back once I make the whole stack. So 14 makes gets me to 20 ft. Then I don't go farther till I make a whole stack of those. I'm now to the point where it's just sort of a routine to make a stack at 15 and a stack at 20. Then comes the 25 ft where my problems currently are.
The stack is just the number of practice putters in my basket. Completely a random number. Currently it's 14.

On the subject of exhaling when you putt. I believe that helps the timing of the putt. Philo Brathwaite speaks about this in one of his putting clinics. He calls it apple pie. It's essentially a 1 2 rhythm you put your body into that improves timing and consistency.
Here's the link to that clinic he starts talking about it around 9:40

I am using something similar to the rope, which I find more effective. I bought some of those slalom rods that are used in soccer practice. About 3-4ft high and put two of those in the exact line to the basket. One is almost in reach so that „shaking hands with the basket“ is actually like touching that pole. Gives me a reference for height of release as well and a close aiming point when putting from further away.

  • @mattwinssometimes5832

I do the rope trick, but I just visualize. Playing Tiger Woods golf for the Wii actually helped me. The putting shows slopes and power etc. I just kinda visualize the same thing when I’m putting.

I saw this tip (roughly) in a Scott Stokely video on The Disc Golf Kid channel once:
Make sure that your feet push towards the basket while stagger putting. You can check to make sure your stance is properly aligned by rocking heel to toe to feel where your body is pointing and adjust your stance from there.
    2nd tip:
Finish your follow through at or above eye level, it gives you feedback to know why you missed left or right.

    Have multiple ways of practicing.
(Most people want to get as many putts in as possible, so usually we just do putt after putt after putt, taking very little time and all of that. Not only can that be boring, it also means you aren't ever practicing under pressure, or ever practicing like you play.)
    1. At first, I usually do 100 putts all in a row, not taking too much time over each putt (another tip is to make sure you take time over each putt, but just a few seconds to lock down and focus on each one.)
    2. Another way of practicing is doing putting games. (Like Perfect Putt 360, or others you can find online) Focus on each putt and making sure that you want to get a perfect round in. This is just to give yourself pressure to make each putt.
    3. Sometimes during my practice I will just start doing my putt routine like how I would putt during a tournament. (This helps you refine your routine so you aren't being surprised on the course. plus, it helps you learn to get rid of all the thoughts during your routine whenever you are in a tournament.) Not everyone has time for this though.
At the end of the day you just want to putt a LOT and make practicing interesting.

In the spirit of the offhand elbow going back, I swing my offhand back as I throw and end with both arms spread 180, which has greatly improved the alignment of my putts. I hypothesize that it prevents/slows rotation by increasing the moment of inertia, like a spinning figure skater

  • @mcox8829

When you breath in it oxygenates your blood improving circulation which makes muscles perform better. Breathing out relaxes the muscles making the movement more fluid. When done in rhythm it is both powerful and smooth. Similar to so many things that utilize focused breathing patterns

My Putting tip is this, you know how there is part 1, 2, & 3 maybe 4 of driving well I do a putting checklist to help me do my putt. First the hands /grip, then the feet shoulder width apart for a putt like you are doing, and last the knowing your putt style and feet for the distance you are putting.

Honestly in the comments to see what tips there are because I love tweaking my game and I love this side of the DG community. Found some great ones and wanted to give my own tip for putting
    Relax your muscles.
I often tense up my shoulders and back and it causes me to pull putts or jerk them too much. Relaxing my muscles helps me with my control and keeps my stroke smooth. Also keeps me calm and usually is associated with holding my breath in my stroke.

One tip for actual rounds, not training so much: bounce your body up and down a bit with legs to feel the gravity. Now do with with your hand and disc. Whole point is to make sure you are releasing straight even if the basket is not straight or you are in a slight down or uphill. Kinda a "gravity check" to be actually straight
