racism: prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against a person or a people on the basis of their membership in a particular racial or ethnic group, typically one that is a minority or marginalized; the belief that different races possess distinct characteristics, abilities, or qualities, especially so as to distinguish them as inferior or superior to one another; belief that certain races of people are by birth and nature superior to others; discrimination or hatred based on the race of a person or of a people (that is, a group of persons). Although the topic of race/ethnicity has not been dealt with much (if at all) in this book, it was decided to include this Glossary entry in order to give the reader a completely objective view of the subject (paradox not intended). The term “discrimination” is of paramount importance in dealing with the topic of racism. According to the above definitions of “racism”, the term “discrimination” has invariably been used in a negative way in public discourse for the past two centuries or so. This word has its origin in the Latin “discriminatus” (the past participle of “discriminare”), from “discrimin-” (“distinction”), from “discernere” (“to distinguish between”). Although many methods or motives for discriminating are unfair and undesirable (or even immoral), the verb itself has a NEUTRAL history. English speakers borrowed it from the past participle of the Latin verb “discriminare” (meaning “to distinguish or differentiate"), which, itself, is derived from the transitive verb “discernere”. The verb “discernere”, in turn, was formed by combining the prefix “dis-” (meaning “apart”) and “cernere”(“to sift”), and thus, “to filter out or sift apart”. Firstly, there is no doubt whatsoever that certain races are superior to other races in certain aspects (sometimes so VASTLY superior that only the most rabid leftist would refuse to accept the facts of the matter). For example, some races have a far higher average intelligence than others, some are far taller, stronger and more physically beautiful than others, some are (on average) greatly more dharmic (religious) than others, some are naturally more quiet and gentle than others, etcetera, etcetera, etcetera. I cannot imagine anyone (even a negro) who would, while walking alone at night in a metropolitan area, prefer to walk in the direction of a group of young negro men instead of a group of young Japanese men. If that makes one a racial bigot, then so be it, but personally, that accusation will never persuade me to walk in the direction of the negroes. Therefore, one ought to be extremely discriminatory (in the original and most etymologically-accurate sense of the word) when presuming to make charges of racial bias towards another!
Off-topic comment, but I have to mention it: It's very cool that Lex doesn't interrupt the flow of the podcast 3 times an hour with ad reads. Most of the advertised products aren't interesting for me since I don't live in the US and for other reasons, but if I was interested in something, I would definitely buy it here and not somewhere else because he doesn't bug his viewers with aggressive shilling. I hope this viewer friendly approach pays off for him!
100%, i'll take a look at the list of sponsors to see if any of them are relevant to me and make sure to use promo codes for podcasts that do that. But those annoying draftkings ads that play mid word on Rogan's podcast in that especially annoying voice? I will go out of my way not to give them any money.
That’s one way to look at it. He never says he’s perfect himself and I’m sure if pressed further he would’ve then said by extension that he also embraced his family’s own critique of him because he wants everyone, including him to be better. Of course your simple minded thinking would just immediately assume malicious intent because you’re a judgmental fuck.
Yes, it's inherently uncivil to defend it and anybody trying to minimize the attack on our nation's elected governing body, like, 1x1=1 poli-science shit. Lex blocked me on Twitter for retweeting Destiny, lmao. What a soft "intellectual" defending political violence with such enthusiasm.
As a historian, there are parts of this podcast that are awesome and parts that are painful. For example, most people killed during the Civil War were not killed in hand to hand combat within a few feet of each other. Nearly twice as many men died of disease than from combat, and, while in some instances many men were killed in a single charge and fairly close range engagements, death from hand to hand combat was actually rather rare and not a leading case of death in the Civil War. Many men were killed by long range rifle and artillery fire. New estimates also place the total killed much higher at closer to 750,000 or more killed by the war.
They didn't talk about Sherman. And as soon as he started talking about how Lee should be regarded and remembered as a villain, he lost all credibility for me.

Yeah Lex lost all credibility when he was “troubled” by the media politicizing a verifiable attempted coup by the leader of our country.. then he was reduced to “Wow this democracy thing is so crazy! Can you believe it?!” What a joke, very sad to see Lex’s lack of self awareness and introspection
@@MGRP-jt2vkit makes you wonder if it's audience capture or something else. It's the easiest thing to condemn unequivocally but he really worked every angle to defend trump there.
Lex, I absolutely love the conversations you have with historians. I always find them very interesting and impossible to turn off. Hope to see more in the future!
Are YOU racist? 🤔 I would appreciate if you would be PERFECTLY honest when responding to my question: if you were walking down a street in the middle of the night, and a group of Negro men were approaching on your side of the street, while a group of Japanese guys were approaching you on the other side of the street, would you cross the road?😬 Obviously, I’m assuming that you didn’t know anything about the individuals in question - ONLY their respective race.🤓
Most of us grew up being indoctrinated with the lies and rewritten version of history that our corrupt governments mandate via public schools. Personally, I'm rather sick of hearing these lies regurgitated over and over by academic "historians" who are themselves too brainwashed to question what they have been taught, or, lacking a moral compass, are willfully disseminating untruths for a paycheck and/or because upholding the falsehoods suits their personal ideological agenda in some way. It's more than a little disappointing when Lex takes the propagandist narratives from these "historians" at face value as factually accurate and does not confront the speaker with conflicting arguments and facts, which he typically does on subjects he is more well-versed in. I would encourage Lex to host interviews on historical topics with individuals that are not employed in government or academic institutions; i.e., those who study it because they are interested in pursuing the truth rather than peddling propaganda. I think interviews with propaganda parroters like Suri would be a hell of a lot more interesting if Lex was armed with knowledge that allowed him to push back on the ideas and information put forward by the guest, which is something Lex is quite skilled at.
Love your voice Lex! 😊 I watch your podcasts at night before bed and it relaxes and expands my mind at the same time. Thank you for doing these podcasts with thoughtfulness and edgy content.
You tube suggests pro communist episodes at least 4 or five times a week. Never Populist guests. Never anti establishment guests. Never critical of COVID episodes.
I need to listen again to this interview. I have listened to a few of the various clips as well. At the moment something (well more than one "something") doesn't rest well in my mind. My emotional response is that I am in far more disagreement with Mr. Suri than I can currently give a rational response to. What I am fully in agreement with is Lex's choice to have such an interview. My personal history is that I learn far more when I disagree with someone and then spend time working through the WHY of that perceived disagreement. It often comes down to needing a better understanding of how my own native bias, as well as the other individual's bias, may be pulling me to and fro. Thank you, Lex, for providing another 3 hours well worth spending my time on.
If we are to have enemies, we should understand them. If we are to have civil disagreements, we should understand people we disagree with. We can still disagree with them, but it's good to understand other perspectives. It can make peace longer lasting, and end wars faster. Understanding and stoicism are underrated.
Everything that you wrote in this comment were the exact same as I would’ve written. I try to listen to the other side than I’ve been cast into due to how the left/right line has shifted lately, just to see if I still see, or disagree with them. I’m still the same, but I watch the line move daily. I think years ago I’d be considered pretty damned close to being liberal. Now I’d be seen as “far right”. I haven’t changed a bit though.
May also help to use the Socratic method on yourself asking more than just why you believe what you believe, but how you came to believe what you believe. So you can see if you believe things simply because of your environment or if you came to your beliefs in in on objective rational manner
😅I was hooking up with a girl who worked at 7/11 and she would let me take whatever I wanted for free and I would grab their Caesar salads from time to time and they were just fine. So I have to disagree with him on that one… but if he’s talking about the one with the ham and egg and shit on it, 🤮 that shit looked disgusting but I’m not into that type of salad period. I just want dark green lettuce, croutons, white cheese and Caesar dressing 😂
I always come to listen to Frdman's interviews for the guests and find myself getting constantly annoyed by Lex's. There should be a separate Lex channel where his guests talk and his speaking segments are at like 150% speed so we don't have to suffer for so long.
Can’t believe the Jan 6th section. It’s one of the most succinct descriptions of the events on that day I’ve ever heard. If anyone hears that and thinks that Trump didn’t fail us all that day idk how to get through
When he was asked why so many died he gave a VERY incomplete answer. The civil war was the first war that used automatic weapons ( gatling guns), the first iron clad ships, the first time hot air balloons for artillery spotting, first submarine, Widespread use of hand grenades. First repeating rifles used. First use of sniper rifles with a scope ( primitive). There were MANY more firsts in the Civil War.
Rifled barrels were definitely a big factor. Iron clads had no impact on total kill count, nor did Gatling guns, but the rest is correct. Artillery and rifles were so much more brutal than people were used to.
Spot on. Another one of those many firsts was the round-based minie ball that replaced the round musket ball that was much more devastating on the human body and caused many fatal infections since the bullets had a much greater chance of lodging themselves in the body.
@@rustyyb8450 That's fair. I was a bit unsure about posting because I'm not a Civil War expert, but I know melee was not "the largest cause of fatalities". Idk what mental gymnastics he had to do to come up with that, but given the typical engagement ranges before a force routed, no, melee was not the biggest cause. A lot of times, they couldn't even get close. When they did, it often looked like Pickett's charge. Apparently that was a mistake. "Attack when convenient", he was told, which is a failure of command; unclear instructions.
I usually enjoy Lex but lately I've been seeing more and more how he really does not know anything about history. Hasn't he lived in the USA for almost his entire life? How does he not already know so many things he is asking in this video.
Lex has some large blindspots. He should watch JBP's recent interviews with experts on climate change. I'd be interested to see his take on it after he becomes more informed.
@@TheRealJC2023 I agree tho I feel this is a strategy to keep the door open to guest more left of centre. If he pushes back to hard he'll be branded right wing and many left wing guests won't agree to come on the podcast 🤷🏻♂️ that's the world we live in today
Jeremi is wrong that most killed in the civil war were due to hand-to-hand combat. In fact besides disease, rifles and artillery did most the killing. And 22 000 did not die at Antietam. Those numbers are of killed, missing and wounded
@@livisda Yes, that's clear. Nothing more dangerous than an intelligent smug professor who is sure they know everything and thinks they are completely unbiased. We can see where our problems are seeping in from.
Terrific as usual; but I would highly recommend a similar interview with Thomas J. DiLorenzo in order to insure, promote and maintain diversity of thought, understanding and analysis about such an important part of American history.
I attended UT and Professor Suri's US History from Reconstruction till present day was probably the most enlightening conventional educational experiences I've had. He's a great voice today.
He's authoritative and well-spoken, that's about it - he has so many things wrong about the founding of the country, the civil war, the KKK, and everything else I've heard here to know he is trying to re-write history and put his personal spin into it - that's not history.

With a sigh, Lex asked the historian a deep and essential question. Thanks for the interesting interview. Lex these days is pretty sharp. I think he has endured many trials in the last three years.
I recently started listening to Lex after my sister told me about him. Jeremi seems to conveniently leave out little parts of history to make his point. I actually quit watching this interview but came back to it and made it through to the end. I do like these long interviews where you get a better view of the subject and also their real knowledge of that.
I love this comment. Thank god we can all 100% agree on who is and isn’t a bum and that who decides who is and isn’t a bum is arbitrary and beyond reproach.

Does this guy know how shockingly wrong he is on almost everything? To say our founders wanted us to be a democracy, begs the question so why didn’t they? Or am I an idiot for understanding that our REPUBLIC (for which we stand) and “Democracy” by definition are NOT the same? It’s so confusing. Am I an idiot for being right, or an idiot for not being wrong? 🤔 I can’t stop now…I can’t believe people believe this stuff.

@@katewerk all the hysterics about Twitter from the left have been (as usual) unfounded. I still find the same leftist propaganda trending daily such as yesterdays "#BidenBoom where the left mobilized to make the claim how great things are with the economy. The left uses Twitter in a more organized fashion to disperse their insane propaganda much way more than the right ever did or will. It's just the nature of who uses it. Very little has changed, claims otherwise are silly.
Approximately 3,600 people died at Antietam, not 22,000. The total casualties (~22,000) include killed, wounded, AND missing. Also, most deaths occurred due to disease (either as a result of infection from wounds {of which most were due to gunfire or artillery}). In fact, two times as many died from disease than battle wounds. Moreover, he is incorrect when stating that most combat was hand-to-hand. Up to this point in military history, no war had seen soldiers engage at such large distances from each other than in the Civil War (largely due to innovations such as the invention of the minié ball and the standardization of rifled muskets and artillery). True hand-to-hand combat was much rarer than we might think. Yes, they had bayonets but these were rarely used in combat and were more for intimidation or even used as work tools and even as candlesticks. Very odd for a professional historian to get his history so blatantly wrong.
Yea I was wondering about that too - I know for a fact that things like bayonet charges were exceedingly rare and only ever done as a last resort so it seems really unlikely that a majority of combat was hand to hand.
My Grandad was invalided out of the 1st WW with bayonet wounds ... So you really aren't correct on that one. He had horror stories about bayonets and that was 1916. Irish, fighting for the Brits, not for the always late, always waiting to pick the winner, always for their own benefit first and foremost USA. Defenders of Democracy? You're having a laugh!
@@rorykeegan1895 Just because you know one person who got bayoneted in WWI doesn't mean that his statement is true that most of the fighting in the American Civil War was hand to hand. There was hand to hand combat and plenty of bayonets, but the vast majority was not.
I love how I opened with he always tries to get his university to be better he always tries to get his family to be better. Has anybody stopped and tried to tell him how to be better?
99.9% of academics reside within an ego stroking echo chamber which they rapidly come to view as an accurate representation of reality. This is literally what the culture of academia is. I’ve been through this process and watched people change before my eyes.
That’s what happens in universities. Pumped full of lies, repeat the lies, get a piece of paper saying you know how to lie, and the liars hire the liars
The Historian states Americans do not have a history of owning AK47s(whatever that means). They do however, have a history of owning weapons of war to protect their property, communities, and lives 😉 from those that seek to take them. Also Americans have owned AK type rifles for like 30 years now, so yes we do have a history of owning these scary kinds of firearms.

@IKnowNothing the thing about how he gaslights the problems of immigration. Most everyone have no problems with legal immigration, but instead illegal immigration.
I am more of a left leaning humanitarian and arts person. However, the radicalization of the left politically has turned me off completely to its politics. There is a place for people like me and people who see the world differently. We all have something to contribute. It seems to me that fear and anger stifle a debate or a clash in supposed values. I’ve seen the right take it to far and now it’s the left. Unfortunately the left has been successful in stifling the voices of others. I’ve never seen the right be able to do that in this country. What the political left is doing is not something I would have ever predicted. But I wasn’t a history buff! I did take honors history in high school in the south. My black history teacher showed us that slavery was not high on the list for the civil war. In top place were tariffs. Slavery was somewhere like 28th on the list. I came to the south from the north and thought it was all about slavery. And with my “ modern” 80s sensibilities, I thought it should have been 100% about slavery. Even if it was for Lincoln personally, that’s not the main issue that got him supporters. My high school history teacher was the only one I have heard to bring this up. After some time all wars get romanticized. But they aren’t romantic. Greed, power and dehumanization aren’t romantic or heroic. Neither is starvation or torture. That’s why I’m armed. There are plenty who feel that I’m dispensable for their own gain regardless of their particular ideology. According to our Constitution, I have a right to preserve and protect myself from such people in my home and community. I certainly hope I don’t have to! I’m not a weapons enthusiast. Don’t like guns at all. But I have great aim anyway. At least I got some practical sense from my grandparents! Hope and work hard for the best but be prepared for the worst. The new political left doesn’t seem to think life is valuable if it doesn’t agree with them. I hope that changes.
I appreciate your response . . . though you and I will disagree on a number of issues, I agree with your approach. I do want to note something regarding the Constitution . . . Not a single right was created by the Constitution . . . neither has a single natural right been created by any human being or document, or holy book, or etc. . . . Our natural rights exist by virtue of our humanity, regardless of whether or not they are protected. That being said . . . we don't want to go back to a world where we no longer have the Constitutional protections of our natural rights, as without such protections, those natural rights will be abused by those in power (as the woke Democratic party has proved to us and the rest of the wide world. We need genuine liberals like yourself to take back control of your party, your side of the political continuum, from the woke Democrats who have lost their collective minds. Keep speaking up for freedom and the protections of all of our natural rights, and thank you for having the courage to speak your mind! Peace

Great story even for every nation of the world. I live in country from former east side of Iron curtain and still is a lot of to be done in how to build free , resposible, conscious nation/society and how to protect that process. In novadays the real problem is, to let society, citizens think on their own and not to use history as a tool to gain and hold power by liders, politicians, etc.

racism:
prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against a person or a people on the basis of their membership in a particular racial or ethnic group, typically one that is a minority or marginalized; the belief that different races possess distinct characteristics, abilities, or qualities, especially so as to distinguish them as inferior or superior to one another; belief that certain races of people are by birth and nature superior to others; discrimination or hatred based on the race of a person or of a people (that is, a group of persons).

@@citizenjags1309 Guy says a whole lot of nothing beyond implying that he knows what's best.

Your a fear monger. Barely anything happened Jan 6. Go watch the videos

Lex, I absolutely love the conversations you have with historians. I always find them very interesting and impossible to turn off. Hope to see more in the future!
Are YOU racist? 🤔
I would appreciate if you would be PERFECTLY honest when responding to my question:
if you were walking down a street in the middle of the night, and a group of Negro men were approaching on your side of the street, while a group of Japanese guys were approaching you on the other side of the street, would you cross the road?😬
Obviously, I’m assuming that you didn’t know anything about the individuals in question - ONLY their respective race.🤓

@@manictiger disease was the most brutal, taking large numbers. .... not mentioned.
@@rustyyb8450
That's fair.
@@manictiger when did he say that hand to hand combat was the main cause?

@hiddxnlxavxs3968 well,he seems to be getting better every year, with every interview. Who knows what he might be able to do.
I think Konstantin Kisin was more telling a story than making an argument in his recent Oxford Union speech, which is why it was so compelling.
The fact he said most combat was hand to hand is so boggling and inaccurate it makes me question many of his other assertions.
theres much more that he's wrong about, I've noticed this is a pattern for him

You’re the greatest Lex! Great interview, some great insights on your part! “Left stand up to the left; right stand up to those on the right, and those of us in the center-it’s a lonely place!” Amen to that!
It's not lonely being a centrist, it's just pathetic and cowardly, especially when they try to present themselves as somehow being better than the extremes by virtue of being a mixture of two implied bad extremes.

Problem with people like this guy is they f lots of things up because they think they know best about everything! No one can tell them wrong! They "know" everything.

he probably gives them bad advice too

"see improvement itself, is very important and there are things that, if left unimproved, will be requiring improvement"

If you disagree with certain people's politics then you're automatically evil and should be stopped. Lex doesn't really seem to take a side so he gets attacked for it.
because whenever the person starts talking about something interesting lex stops them and trys to change the topic back to something tottaly dull and then gets stuck there and then brain farts and has a system crash and reboot. he could suck the excitement out of a room full of coke and whores.

In Knoxville, TN, we have Fort Dickerson, a well-preserved earthworks fort. I did a deep dive in to Captain Jonathan Calvin Dickerson's life story - whom the fort was named after. No one did such that I could find. I visited his grave, his wife's grave and the skirmish site where he was mortally wounded. Also an unrelated redan in Knoxville that was fairly recently discovered. Oliver Hardy's father took part in the siege of Knoxville as well.
Since you like Knoxville history, Knox County Stomp is an album of some of the earliest music ever recorded in Knoxville and its pretty amazing!
Peace
