    Roborocks have been the best navigating vacuums I've used. Camera-only navigation just doesn't do it. Tesla ought to have figured that out by now. I also have an Ecovac Omni S8 with the fancy dock and it gets stuck more often. The other day, it just kept ramming into a wall. No matter how many times I moved it and started it cleaning again, it went right back to the wall and continued ramming. And it loves to re-arrange lightweight furniture. It might be good for robot vacuum demolition derby, but it's not so good at avoiding obstacles and not getting stuck.

    • @ModernCastle
      @ModernCastle  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      100% agree
      Camera only navigation just is looking quite dated.
      Cameras + LIDAR feels like the obvious future for robot vacuums. But you also making a good point about the Omni...same basic hardware, but clearly the software layer just isn't as good there. I too wasn't blown away by the navigation on my Omni X1.

      Definitely.
      This video is based on our initial round testing.

    How does this mopping action compare to the spinning brushes moppers like the dreame W10?

    • @ModernCastle
      @ModernCastle  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I haven't tested the W10, but I have tested the L10S, Narwal, Narwal Freo, and others with the spinning moppers.
      The spinning action in most cases is slightly better, though it's not a massive difference. In any case, the usability and maintience of these different bots have ended up being far more significant factors than a slight performance difference between the mopping types, based on my experiences.

    I have two large breed dogs that shed a lot. My current robot vacuum leaves clumps and gets clogged in the vacuum a lot. I believe your video shows that this would not be a problem with the robot vacuum part of the s8 ultra. But what about the dock itself? Do you have to clean/maintain the rock dock? It would be helpful if you did a video showing how to clean the dock only. I did not see any how to videos of this nature. Thanks

    I'm afraid about the pet hair, as I have a large breed dog that sheds alot. If the pet hair gets tangled in the axles, I don't think it can be sucked out by the charging station, so then I have to check after every cleaning cycle if the axles are hair-free. If I will do that, I fail to see how this new sophisticated home station automates the process of cleaning and refilling, as I still have to check it regularly. The size of the pet hair is about 8-10 cm. What do you think?

    • @ModernCastle

      Huge volumes / large pet hair is going to be difficult for basically any robot on the market. You are right to be skeptical about that. As it is likely going to be an issue.

      We didn't test vs. any strong stains and I haven't had a chance to see how it is for long term use yet (just started long term tests lasts week).
      But if it's anything like the S7 MaxV mop, which I would say there is a 95% chance there is, it'll be reasonably good at stronger stains, though not a miracler worker. It's far better as a maintenance / every day cleaning type mop than something that's going to scrub your floors back to mint condition.

    Noise level test in your review is an important item, unfortunately many reviewers did not include. High pitch noise of robovac can spread to other room and even apartments but it would be good to measure on hard floor too because carpet will mute the sound since sound include vent and roller brush etc.

    Wow...i love your review on this S8 Pro Ultra....and i am considering this S8 too. My only concern is the mop function where the S8 uses a damp fixed vibrating microfibre cloth attached at the bottom that gets dragged all over the floor where the dirt is still on the damp cloth like a swiffer.
    My Q is: how good is the mopping function of the S8 if compared to the mopping function on Narwal T10's circulating microfiber mop pads or the Smartmi Vortexwave's rotating scrubbing brush or even iLife's W450 Shinebot's rotating brush? Which gives the best mopping function? Any idea?

    • @ModernCastle
      @ModernCastle  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Overall, I am exceedingly pleased with the mopping performance on the S8. I don't feel like I'm missing out on anything.
      At the end of the day, every mop is dragging around dirt on their pads until the pads are cleaned. Which in the case of the S8, it's cleaning it's mopping pad every 15'ish minutes (at least in the case of my home + settings).
      I haven't tested the Vortexwave or W450, so I cannot say how they compare. But I do have a Narwal T10 and I unplugged it and stopped using it when the S8 Pro arrived. I haven't missed it at all...don't get me wrong, the T10 is fantastic, arguably a better mop, but it's so weak in so many other areas that what little mopping performance I give up in I gain tremendously more in terms of usability, navigation, and overall experience.

    Interesting… I have a roomba i bought new 2 years ago. I’m moving and I want a new robot. I saw dyson releasing theirs soon, but it didn’f seem to perform well. I thought roborock was a random brand, but it seems well and it’s $1,600 I believe. I’m between this or the roomba combo j7+. The roborock seems to be superior :))))

    • @ModernCastle
      @ModernCastle  ปีที่แล้ว

      Indeed - Roborock is a relatively young brand, just launching in 2014. But today the S8 Pro Ultra is arguably the best robot vacuum on the market.
      Dyson's new robot launches later this year...but does so without obstacle detection, without a self empty dust bin, without mopping functionality, and (from what I can tell) without LIDAR. I expect the vacuum itself will be powerful, but a robot vacuum is more than just a strong vacuum. I wouldn't hold my breathe for Dyson.

      For not being a "real" mop it still pulls a ton of dirt into that dirty water tank. I haven't tested the Shinebot, so I cannot say how it compares.
      But I can say for sure this is an amazingly good mop. When I'm not testing new robots the S7 MaxV Ultra was the robot vac / mop I am using in my personal home and office.

      @@ModernCastle I'd like to see you do a review of the Shinebot, it's a mopping only unit. They work in the same was the old iRobot Scooba did. Put down clean solution then scrub then vacuum up.

      The mop pad is improved from the previous S7 generation. The pad has 2 vibration points and also makes a downward force which improves it's moping functionality. Also it has a default setting in the app, that let's the robot vacuum first the entire house, and then begin moping the entire house (you can also set how much moping you want, for example it can pass several times on the same location). While moping only, the 2 vacuum brushes are raised to not leave marks on the floor. This is from what I read about the product, so it sounds like a very good mop actually. And I think @Modern Castle forgot to mention is that the new S8 model Pro Ultra has auto drying feature which will dry the mop, preventing bacteria growth.

    All that work and not even a comparison to last years model. Such a waste. Cannot wait until @vacuumwars does it properly

      I mean...it's a review, not a comparison. We're going to do a complete side by side comparison to the S7 MaxV Ultra and other models in the coming months.
      No need to get rude about it.
