This is one of the best comparisons of an electronic gadget I have seen online. Very relevant and actually helps a buyer to decide easily. You deserve a Thank you for your extensive work. 👍👍👌👌
Excellent review. Just one note, throughout the review it is recommended to keep the editing sequence so that Model 1 is always on the left and Model 2 is on the right.
I've been using the S7 MaxV Ultra (a ridiculous name) for 2 years and have been entirely pleased with it. No troubles at all. It does need to be cleaned, but this is much less work than vacuuming and mopping.
It is brave to recommend S7 MaxV first over S8 Pro. I bought S7 MaxV a couple of months ago and have been happy. The new dock looks much better, but I don't want to give up remote camera and removable mop plate for it. S7 MaxV's color camera with obstacle picture tagging is next level stuff.
Cajt agree with u more, I chose the s7 max v for a reason , removable mop plate , Also not mentioned removable water tank just in case it needs to be cleaned cuz the s8 cant. And better obstacle avoidance cuz of the camera with led light for night cleaning . And im scared the if i get the s8 it will run over poop. The s7 maxv will do better at avoiding poop. That is my worst nightmare. Poop all over the house
I think S8 can also avoid those nasty mines as well. As a retrospective, the old dock has been better for me. I installed the dock inside a closet frame. Since the old dock requires less clearance above, I could save an additional shelf from the closet. The dock is not visible, so the design doesn't matter anymore.
It is sad how bad roborock model's obstacle avoidance/object detection is. Roombla has miles better obstacle avoidance/object detection and it is the most important feature to me. I love roborock in every other way, but cannot handle it's bad oa/od compared to roombla. Sadly
Awesome video Jamie!! Thanks for all your hard work!! My choice was the S7MaxV Ultra, and I even waited to purchase it after the new S8 came out!! The removable water tank and mop plate is a win for me!! With multiple levels, much faster and easier to do!! Seeing you still have to pick up robot to take to different level, much faster to do when leaving out the door. This video makes me happy I chose the S7MaxV Ultra! I also got it on sale for $1000, so that is a win win!! My S7MaxV Ultra is performing very well and have zero complaints so far!! Thanks again for this great video from someone who really loves and researches new tech!!👍🔥👍
Hey Andrew, for 1k you got a really good deal on the S7 Maxv Ultra and at that price you made the right choice without doubt even if you have carpet and pets. Thanks for your support!
@Jamie Andrews I'm super confused with your review, literally everyone other review I have watched facing these 2 models against each other says the S8 is far superior in almost every way.
@@1989cranston There are a bunch of channels out there with the only goal to make video content and please the manufacturers. They are basically infomercials and they do not test or anilyize like I do. Most use tests that are little to no challenge for most any robot. Vacuum Wars came to a similar conclusion as I did with the vacuum power. I respect his channel a bunch. My tests speak for themselves and I use the same tests for all of my robots. I think where the S8 Pro is better or worse than the S7 Maxv Ultra is a matter of perspective as well which is why I tend to not recommend one robot over another. I just provide the details as I see them. Hope this helps.
I bought the S8 Pro (non ultra) and it does have the easily removable mop pad plate. It also has the single vibrating plate of the S7. The main reason I opted for the S8 was for the dual brushes since I heard past roborock’s were not great at getting pet hair out of carpet and that the dual brush helps a lot with that. So far it’s worked well and the mapping and obstacle avoidance certainly beats my older roomba. I do miss the automatic mop cleaning but I just couldn’t justify an extra $800 for that, instead I just bought a bunch of mop pads to swap out.
It's always better to get the new and improved version as they will continue being built upon for at least a year, so the investment is usually much more valuable than previous version. I tend to gift things after 2 years to relatives and so on.
Hi Jamie, thank you so much! But still, I can’t decide. I have a large house, nearly all hard floors aside from the odd rug. My main concern is the pick up of hair from my Labrador dog. Which S8 Roborock? 🤦🏻♀️ Thank you, Jenny
All of the S8 models have dual rollers. If you want the most powerful vacuum unit look at the S8 Max or MaxV Ultra. A cheaper option would be the Qrevo models.
Fantastic and very thorough review. Loved how you did the hot sauce challenge three times because you couldn’t believe the results. Your viewers thank you!
Although the fact that the S8 did not avoid the poop on the carpet is a concern if recommending this device to pet owners with a lot of carpet. Hopefully it’s a well trained pet!
I’m stuck between a rock and a hard place. I have the S4 that I want to upgrade, but I don’t know whether to go for the S8 Pro Ultra vs S8 Max Ultra. I have all vinyl floor with one big carpet in the living room. I have no pets, just a family of 3. I saw your review regarding the FlexiArm in the S8 MaxV Ultra and it makes me wonder whether I want to shell out the extra money for the Max Ultra given the arm doesn’t do a good job around the corners. I do like the dirt detection and auto detergent dispenser feature though! Any suggestions Jamie?
@@jamie.andrews I also got the S7 MaxV Ultra due to this video. My only gripe is how much water is sitting inside the ultra dock when not in use. I don't know how much the internal dryer on the S8 helps on this, but it was more than i expected.
@@lassepetersen684 The internal dryer helps for sure, but honestly nobody ever talked about the water sitting there as being a problem before the S8 Pro unless you are only using it once every few weeks.
Very wel done and explained video. I think you're right on the conclusion. Rather than seeing it as competitors they might be alternatives to each other. I have mostly hard floors and the S7 performs better on that so for me I will be going for the S7.
This shows that big companies, (especially companies that lead in the technology they create e.g apple and samsung for mobile phones) all partake in what i call commercialisation or an "upgrade paradox". Purposely taking out bonified positive features, and inserting other features in a so called "upgrade" - leaving you wanting both features in a single product - thereby hoping that the next "upgrade" will have this. And the cycle continues in this way.
Your way of talking is very cute and funny! Thank you for the very precise and unbiased review, I wonder where does one buy the Garbage Collectors afterwards, not sold on Amazon as single items maybe must find some official site. For a couple of years I wanted to buy the Viomi robots that appear to be most superior but they aren't being sold over here on Amazon and it feels risky to just order one from Alibaba (despite Jack Ma being an awesome person)
Thank you so much! Buying on Amazon with their return policy is hard to beat. It is just like Walmart where you can return anything even things you did not buy from there :) It impacts my buying for sure.
Hmm. Personally aftering watching this (and countless other reveiws) i'll stick to my S7 MaxV Ultra! I wanted to gauge if it was worth getting a second S7 Maxv Ultra for upstairs, or if we should "upgrade" to the newer S8. Seems to me the S7 is the clear winner! AND here the S7 MaxV Ultra is $1800 VS $2700 for the S8 Pro Ultra. And where i am, you can't get the S8 Pro Ultra in black, it only comes in white, where as the S7 comes in both black and white! Mind made up! Seems i'll keep an eye out when the s9 comes out to see if there's any noticeable upgrades! Thanks for the review!
Love this video good stuff! I keep watching reviews like these because I recently bought a "renewed" S7 MaxV Plus and man this things does wonders I absolutely love it. Kinda wish I got the ultra however I didn't have the money for it at the as I got my MaxV Plus for $800 after tax ! I'm happy with my purchase all in all thank you again 🙏🍾
Great video, thanks for detailed comparison. After watching your video did some further research and got the understanding that Roborock has S7 Max and MaxV two different model, out of which the later one does not have the auto mop drying and its the older model. The naming of these products are always confusing to consumers.
Thanks for another great video! Your thoroughness and clarity make you one of the best reviewers anywhere. I also waited for reviews on the S8 before I made my choice in late April, and I'm glad I did. For my own needs and convenience, the S7 is better. Aesthetically, there's no argument. The S8 is much nicer to look at. Otherwise, I'm very glad I bought the S7. I hope they can eventually add a warning about a full dust bin in a future firmware upgrade.
Hey Tony, thanks so much for your kind words! I aim to be different and stand out from other people on TH-cam which most churn out infomercials with tons of inaccurate and misleading information. Those only aim to help the manufactures and not viewers. As far as the full dustbin issue the reason it only exists on iRobot is because they hold a patent that does not expire until 2027. Here is the patent: patents.google.com/patent/US20080189898A1/en?q=(Vacuum+dustbin+sensor)&oq=Vacuum+dustbin+sensor
@@jamie.andrews why doesnt it offer an empty dust bin after a certain amount of time like it does for washing the brush? i have pets and that small dustbin would fill up before its done with a full run
@@stevec8791 I really do not know. I do know irobot has a patent that keeps other manufactures from including a dustbin full sensor. My guess is this might infringe on that patent in some way.
The dual vibrating plates....are the vibrations synced to be opposite of one another? Would it be possible for the motor vibrations to occasionally cancel one another out to a degree, causing less cleaning?
A great video Jamie. Thanks. My house is mostly carpet and my current robot is an Ecovacs T8 AIVI which I am pretty happy with but being a gadget lover I will definitely be upgrading it at some point. From my experiences with carpets there is one difference in the S8 Pro Ultra that looks very interesting - the wider wheels. I find that because my Ecovacs runs daily and always does the same boundary sweep in the same direction at the start of cleaning each room over time it leaves track marks around the edges of the carpets and “crop circles” in the corners where it does its 90 degree turns. Having wider wheels presumably distributes the weight over a bigger area so if the s7 & s8 are of approximately equal weight then I would expect the s8 to be kinder to carpets in terms of being less prone to leaving track marks. It’s a bit of a shame that Roborocks don’t have dual side brushes because then it could do a boundary sweep in either direction with a corner brush always hugging the wall. That could allow Roborock to do something clever in the software by, for each room on the map, recording the direction that it used for its last boundary sweep and making sure it alternated directions on successive cleans which might also help reduce track marks because it wouldn’t always be driving the same way relative to the pile of the carpet.
Interesting take on the wheels that I had not thought of as being an advantage. Lol now you are going to have to buy one and let me know if that really works! I'm not sure if we will ever see dual brushes from Roborock. The appear to not be interested.
Another great review Jamie! In my opinion, S8 is lot of marketing, and does not take the s7’s soul hehe. S7 instead is a very concrete product. For who cares about real performances S7 is the winner, who cares most aesthetics then will choose S8
@@user-bl4lf9rg8m It really depends on your needs. I try to highlight their differences so you can decide which one would be best for your home. Since everyone has different layouts, floor types, pets etc I do not usually flat out recommend a certain vacuum for any one person.
I've used the S5 MAX for 3 years. My bedrooms are carpeted and the living room has an 8x10' area rug. I have an Australian Shepherd who sheds a LOT! The S5 Max's single roller brush with bristles picks up the hair well, but gets dog hair wrapped around it a lot, including at the ends, and the dustbin fills up quickly, so that I have to pause vacuuming after each two rooms to empty it. So, I decided to get the 8+ for its auto-emptying feature (mopping isn't that important to me). I really looked forward to using it, especially the auto-emptying, even if I still had to stop the vac every two rooms so that it could return to dock and empty. BUT, I was severely disappointed to find that the S8+ won't even pick up the dog hair on carpet, certainly not much of it. The clumps are still there on the carpet after vacuuming, even if I do a room 3 times! I also had it set to Max+ vacuuming strength. I could literally watch the S8+ ride directly over the hair and not disturb it. So I would either have to pick up the hair clumps before or after vacuuming. The vac does auto-empty fine, but it didn't make my effort doing vacuuming any more successful or easier. So, I returned the S8+. Its 2 roller brushes, which lack bristles, just don't do a good job of picking up dog hair. I didn't assess its performance on non-carpeted areas, because the hair was more visible on carpet. I have no reason to think any of the other S8 models would do any bette if they have the same kind of brush system, and based on other reviews I've read, I don't know of a self-emptying vac from another brand that would be any better, either. If any of you do, please let me know. The S7 MaxV Ultra gets good reviews, but I don't know if it would be any better for my situation. It also seems to almoat be discontinued, as it's unavailable most placesnive looked. Thanks!😮
First I am sorry to hear of your struggle. I have short haired cats and do not have the same issue. I suspect the rubber rollers don't agitate the carpet enough to break the hair free. A bristle roller brush is what many people have used in your situation although I don't have a good way to test for this on my channel. I am reviewing the Eufy X8 Pro now and that comes to mind as it has a bristle roller brush and a hair detanglemet system which I can't test very well as it is designed for pets like you have. I have 2 girls in the house with long hair and that always gets wrapped around rollers with bristles. Keep an out out for that video on my channel which will be out next weekend. It might be worth trying out.
@@jamie.andrews Thanks, Jamie. Yeah, it seems I need one with a bristles brush that auto empties the bin. Of course, I know that bristled brushes have their own problems with hair getting wrapped around them. Tough situation to solve. I'll keep an eye out for that Eufy!
@@jamie.andrews I was just thinking that, since you don't have any dogs, you might try using some cotton balls as substitutes for the clumps of fur that some dogs like mine shed. If the vacuum works, as it passes over them it should pick them up. Anyway, just a thought or suggestion. I wish I'd thought to compare cotton balls with my dog's fur sheds when I had the S8+.
@@Jim_in_AR Cotton balls are interesting. Should I pull them apart I assume? BTW testing with fake hair has never proven to be realistic for me. That is why I don't do hair tests.
@@jamie.andrews Yes, I'd pull them apart.some. You might wad some together, then pull that apart and spread it around. My dog leaves shed tufts all over rooms! You might also go to a dog groomer and ask for some largeish clumps of hair from dogs known to shed a lot, like my Australian Shepherd. In fact, that would probably be better than cotton balls.
So far I would say they are the same as far as the rollers go with very little hair being wrapped around the rollers. The new side spinning brush on the S8 Pro has not had problems with getting hair wrapped around it like the one on the older S7 series although you could add this S8 brush to your S7 so not a huge deal.
Great video Jamie, can you add to your testing: sprinkle coffee grounds along the edges of the floor, but under the counter/cabinets? I find my S7MaxV Ultra is not able to do edges well. I know the robot is round, but it should only take a software update to drive into the edge (under the cabinets), bump its front sensor, back up and move over, and drive into the edge again (or a different route is okay too). I find it misses about 2 to 3 inches away from the floor's edge every time. I need to sweep a long the edge and push the dirt to the center of the room, so the robot captures all the dirt. The robot drives under the counter and does not think its an object, so it should be able to do a better job with edges. I would be really cool if you added this to your normal tests, if you have not done this already. After that, testing dirt in corners would be cool, but much harder for a totally round robot. Thanks again for another great comparison video! Keep up the excellent work!
Thanks for the suggestion. Cleaning and especially mopping under cabinets is a problem for most all robots I have tested to date. That is because the won't fit without hitting the bumper or if the cabinets are high enough to fit under the lidar reacts to the cabinet doors and keeps the robot away as lidar sees the door as a wall. The best thing to do I sweep under the cabinets right before you send the robot out or since these robots won't mop there either use a wet dry vacuum like the Dreame H12 to sweep and mop under the cabinets and kill 2 birds with one stone. There is not a robot on the market that will handle mopping near the edges of your room and especially in corners. My answer is you still need to sweep or mop in the edges every so often and again I think a wet dry mop and a robot vacuum are perfect companions to tackle your home. Robots are mainly maintenance devices for in between deep cleanings. Hope this helps some and I appreciate your support!
Yes, take a look at my video review of the add on dock dryer here: th-cam.com/video/NcRQJTsnh1s/w-d-xo.html where I show you how it plugs in and is setup.
I got a new firmware update on it yesterday, but I have not retested it. I will do so soon and report back when I think it is fixed by putting out a quick video.
I just bought the S8 and Amazon just lowered the price of the 7 to $1,000. I was wondering what you thought now that they update the 7 to have the same camera system as the 8 and integrated the drying. Seems like the 7 is an even better value. I’m seriously considering returning it and getting the 7. But! (There’s always a but) the new dock, as you said looks WAY better. The question is, is that worth $600 to me! That is a huge delta! I was more inclined to return it when it had the camera with live view. That is a really cool feature that is now gone on both. Thanks for the great co tent and you got a new sub from me!
The S7 Max Ultra if that is what you are referring to does not have the same object avoidance system as the S8 Pro Ultra. The S8 Pro Ultra has a camera and the S7 Max Ultra does not. If you want the best object avoidance and that is a priority over other features and dock improvements then the S7 Maxv is the best one to date. It all comes down you your needs in your home. Take a look at my recent video where I compared all of Roborock's Object a oidance e systems. th-cam.com/video/cgSLuEP41w0/w-d-xo.htmlsi=05JAnl9WHcagsejd
Just found your channel today and immediately subscribed! Thank you for the excellent informative videos that aren't just another infomercial. As someone who has 0 use for a mopping function or the ability to avoid animal waste I'm having a tough time deciding if any of the current roborock offerings (or any robovac currently available, really) are worth the money in my situation. I have a j7+ and an S9+. One downstairs one up. My biggest complaint with both of them is their feeble navigation, the S9's complete lack of obstacle avoidance and how long they take to clean. The j7+ is also starting to become very buggy which is unfortunate. I end up just not running them most of the time due to the noise and dust they kick up while running because they are so slow. The poor obstacle avoidance on the roborock models particularly for cables is a huge letdown especially considering my j7+ seems to run screaming for the hills at the first sight of a cable which IMO is its greatest strength! For use exclusively on low pile carpets, for an extreme allergy sufferer where keeping dust out of the space provides a lot of value, do you believe any of the vacs currently on the market are worth the money considering what I've already got? Thanks for any help!
For navigating there is not really a better robot that Roborock. Near flawless. They have good carpet pickup and the have the very best auto empty docks. Other vacuums that come to mind are the Ecovacs T10 Plus which had not as precise navigation, but not too bad and besides the J7 is the only other robot that will dodge a cord. I reviewed it on my channel. The words "Not an infomercial" might make it on my channel somehow in the future. I think that when I create these videos. Too many people on TH-cam trying to please the manufacturer which does not do the consumer any good. I'm here to help people and not just make a buck or a half baked video. Thanks for your support!
which would you recommend for sewing thread pickup/tangling. Also avoiding a mirror that is 2 inches off the ground please ? also bagless would be good but not a deal breaker. thank you
I have no idea if a robot vacuum can successfully pickup sewing thread without it getting wrapped around the roller brushes. All robots with lidar will have a problem with a mirror. The only ones that don't are ones like the iRobot models and Yeedi which use cameras to navigate instead. I just reviewed the Yeedi Cude.
@@jamie.andrews thank you Jamie. Regarding floor length mirrors, would setting up a no-go area using the app make any difference with the LIdar (in the Roborock models) response? I am looking at purchasing a Roborock Q Revo model or a Roborock S8 Pro Ultra model.
@@rosalyntoop665 Yes to keep them from trying to go through the mirror, but to be clear if lidar can see the mirror it will think there is another room and the map will be a bit funky. It is not a huge deal though.
Yes the side brush does, although that is pretty common even on the older models, however this brush is a bit closer to the wheel so it bends a bit more.
I just bought s8 and then a found this video … I was curious about ai avoidance because my friend got also vaccum that can avoid obstacles like boots or dumbbells or cables so I was happy to have something better than him and now I’m wondering if I even want it now 😳 if shouldn’t be better return it and buy s7 vmax but it’s not in local store , I was studying s8 over 2 week and was hyped and now I’m scared or sad .. was something improved by updates ? Thanks
I don't know if they are selling the S7 Maxv any longer. I have not seen any improvements with firmware for the S8 Pro Ultra yet. Check out my latest video where I just tested it again. th-cam.com/video/cgSLuEP41w0/w-d-xo.htmlsi=cOFtobkn2nCXVDCB
Great channel and comparisons that you are doing. Can you please advice me is it worth paying more for Roborock S7 MaxV Ultra / S8 Pro compared to Dreame L10S Ultra ? Is there a big gap between them for everyday simple hard floor cleaning / mopping plus one medium carpet ?
All 3 will do a great job on hard floor surfaces and carpet. The S7 Maxv is going to have the best object avoidance of all 3. The L10s has detergent injection which I am a big fan of but as I mentioned in my review it has a few flaws as well. I'd mostly suggest the S8 Pro for people with carpets and pets.
Sure I actually think both robots are good but, just so you understand the S7 Maxv has more options with removable mopping plate and water tank and better obstacle avoidance so it is really up to you if you want to pay for those differences.

Hello. I can't find any reviews of the bluepunkt omega vacume mop robot. Think it might be good?
I really hope RR isn't done with the reactive AI/remote viewing technology as their other obstacle avoidance efforts are just not in the same ball-park atm. Fingers crossed for an S8 Max V Ultra at some point!
I think it is growing pains. RR built their object avoidance based on a camera system and fine tuned that for a few years. They got slammed over and over again regarding privacy concerns so I think they are trying robots without Rgb cameras. Let's just hope they refine the current tech or bring back the camera because they are loosing the war on dog poop!
Hi, I have the S7 Max V Ultra and am wondering if the dock requires any maintenance outside of changing the dust filter, water debris filter, and spinning brush.
How would you compare the bare S7 Vs. S8? In theory, better suction/double roll for carpet, better mopping - and obstacle avoidance sounds great. Though it's difficult to quantity how much better it's doing for real. Would you say it's worth 50% more? And - in case you have an S8+ dustbin at hand - could you confirm it's working with the separately available S7 auto empty station which is what some German forums are claiming? Thanks a lot!
I would say it is worth it if you need object avoidance as that is the biggest difference. Are you asking is the robots internal dustbins are the same between S7 and S8? If so the answer is no.
Great bunch of videos Jamie! Thank you for all the hard work and time you put in to bring us these top notch videos.. They were all very well made, to the point, sharp, and most important of all, informative . I have an apartment with mostly carpets and was considering either the S7 MaxV Ultra, S8 Pro, and the Dreame L10S Ultra, after watching your video comparing it to the S7 Max V and EcoVacs. But I still can't make a thorough decision. I have an apartment with mostly carpets, not many places to mop, if any. My wife and I both have long hair, and a cat with very short hair. However, I want to future proof as well because we might move out or get rid of a carpet or two. Which robot would you suggest? I think a carpet robot shootout would be a fun idea for a future video. Keep up with the great work you're doing and cheers!
Thanks so much Yash! I assume you are referring to my ultra robot vacuum comparison video? th-cam.com/video/Nt1KwfEPoEI/w-d-xo.html The rubber brush rollers on the Roborock models do the best and not getting hair wrapped around the roller brush, however until the S8 Pro came along with dual roller the roller brushes with bristles deep clean the carpet much better imo. I like the idea of a carpet shootout and will need to think beyond rice for that one. You may notice I do not do fake hair tests on my channel and the main reason is our hair and our pets hair is for one not synthetic and 2 laying a bunch of wads of hair on top of the carpet does not simulate how our hair in embed in the carpet at all. I have 2 girls in my house with long hair and 3 cats and I can tell you those test you see on other channels do not accurately represent real life and it is not even close. What I do is I live with each robot in my house for months before putting out a review video so I can tell you that the Roborock brush rollers will only get it wrapped around the roller axles while the ones from the other manufactures get it wrapped around the brush roller itself. If you don't clean that often you will reduce your agitation ability. I tend to shy away from suggesting which robots people should buy as I do not want to appear partial in any sort of way plus what I suggest does not always meet the needs for you and your home exactly. What I do is try and give fair and honest comparisons to help people make the right choice. I am also going to have reviews out for 3 more ultra robot as I am testing them right now. I appreciate your support and kind words. Cheers!
Hi Jamie, can you please tell me about the life time of s7 maxv altra? After how many years I have to change battery n separately battery price. As this stuff is too expensive for me. Thanks
❤ excellent review❤ I have a three-level house and use 2 Roomba vacuums for the first and second floor. The vacuums at the time were sold in black , which has been a problem with the baseboards being marked with black bumper marks. I purchased some Velcro and that solved the problem. I do not have keep out zones and the Roomba frequently gets stuck under chairs and next to rugs. The rugs have tassels and the side brush frequently gets entangled. I will not purchase a Roomba again as their technology has not kept up with the competition. 👎👎😢
another advantage of s7 is you can purchase an auto water& detergent refill+empty module for the charging station. I have used it for several months and dont need to care about the water tank forever.
I have not seen anyone make a straight rating on just mopping. I only have hard wood floors and no carpet so want the best mopping performance. Should I always run 2 passes? How does this compare to the X1 or other mopping robots at mopping alone? Thanks
The X1 did not fare as well. Take a look at my comparison video here th-cam.com/video/Nt1KwfEPoEI/w-d-xo.html I do not think you need to run 2 passes as you likely do not have stains as bad as I do in these tests. There are a few other robots that only mop, but they do not have self washing docks so they are limited and then they still require a sweeping by hand or using another robot to go before them and vacuum.
Amazing video kind Sir! Thank you for the extremely detailed video, it helps me figure out which one I'm getting, which unfortunately will be the S7 MaxxV Pro Ultra. I really wanted the S8 to win in all categories, but alas they flopped big time on the dual roller design. Not sure how their engineers and designers did not see the gap issue with their rollers, but it was very obvious to me the first time I saw it, and I'm no engineer (although I design PC hardware so maybe that helps? lol). They should've redesigned their rollers in the S8 so that one roller complements the other roller and creates an almost perfect seal with each other. I have an iRobot Roomba i6+ and that is how they design their rollers. Works great on almost all surfaces. I appreciate the unbias views you provide on the products. I hope your channel gets more views and good luck to you and your channel! :)
Hey Sean thanks a bunch! I was thinking of iRobot's roller design when I looked at this and also iRobot has a much weaker vacuum motor so it just goes to show the S8 Pro is losing a bunch of suction through those gaps. Hopefully they will update it with the S9.
@@jamie.andrews I don't think Roborock even needs to wait that long. They just need to redesign the rollers to be "seal" better between each other, with a pattern that pulls dust and debris towards the middle of the roller, and then release that as "addon" that further improves the performance of the S8. Heck, they can sell it for $50 and I'm sure people will buy it lol.
Anyone who has no problem with the camera the uses artificial intelligence to map your house with servers in China. Then gives a live feed of a robot vacuum controllable over the internet with no shutter on the lens is crazy to me. Anyone who has even a basic knowledge of privacy and potential for security risk would be nervous, especially with a 24/7 open port to the internet, i.e. it's how you can remote in anytime you want.
@@jamie.andrewsat is true lol, have you tried it with the new firmware? Only reason I ask is since that was from a couple months ago with the pre-production firmware as I've heard the new firmwares are night and day difference with obstacle avoidance. The IR cameras are like $500 on Amazon right now and the RGBs are like $20. The obstacle avoidance comes down to two things, the first one is you are using fake dog doo doo which has no color differentiation much in FLIR, second is the firmware has gotten so much better from the pre-production models. Just my two cents. I think unfortunately a lot of people don't realize how expensive the FlIR cameras are and think robo Rock skimped. Anyone who has seen a video with FLIR images can see how amazing they are once the algorithm is tuned.
@@ktms1188 I have tried it with new firmware and it is still a problem. Not sure if I follow the logic about the fake poo being a problem. It is still an object in the path of the robot which the robot should avoid regardless of what it is. The S8 Pro also has structured light sensors in addition to the IR camera so even if the color is a problem the objects can get detected and avoided. Roborock has some fine tuning to do imo as their S7 Max and Q Revo also struggle where other robots do not.
I had a cleanmate a few years back that i got rid of because it didn't work well with long dog hair. Is this still an issue even with top models like this? I don't want to clean the machine every other day.
I'd say not as bad. The rollers on the S7 and S8 never get hair wrapped around the rollers, but it does wrap around the axle some. I have 2 long haired girls in the house.
Love your videos! I would love to see an update on this video. Object avoidance is my priority, from bumping into things generally and avoiding objects. The S7 MaxV Ultra seems the safe bet but wonder if the S8 has had updates in late 2023.
I just saw this; so I canceled my order for the S8 and wanted to change for S7 MaxV Ultra and it’s no longer available (the V was limited)! I am more interested in floor washing than vacuuming so should I try the regular s7 Max Ultra?
I would put the S7 Max below the S8 and S7 Maxv as far as obstacle avoidance is concerned. I did a comparison video of the S7 Max and Maxv here th-cam.com/video/-9u4UXH_lFc/w-d-xo.html
awesome and thorough comparison as usual Jamie. Must say that mopping test was at the very least disappointing to say the least. Side question, on my S7 i was able to easily remove the front wheel to remove the hair, but on the S8 pro i cannot and im afraid to break smth if i pull too much, is it actually removable?
Awesome video!! the most of my house is covered with carpet all year round except for the summer, and I feel confused between the S7 MaxV Plus and the S8+ knowing that the S7 MaxV plus in my country is more expensive than the S8+ by 80$. So what do you think is the best one for me?
Both do a great job on carpet. I don't normally recommend one over the other because there could be many reasons including cost that work better for you, plus I want to stay partial and just present the facts as I see them. I also have not tested the S8 Plus so I can not comment on that robot. Thanks for your support
I appreciate the video. You did a good job in this comparison. I have a S7maxv and I wanted to know if you are able to switch the water tanks? If not do you know if they plan on putting out an updated model for the S7 similar to the S8’s. I also wanted to ask if they are going to make a reusable dust bag/canister for the S7maxv. I heard at one point they were thinking about it but haven’t heard anything since. Any information is much appreciated.
Thanks Matt! The water tanks are not able to be swapped. No word on another S8 Model just yet, but I hope they will. I remember hearing about the reusable bags, but that idea was dropped shortly after release and it has not come back up.
Thanks for your video & here are my personal thoughts, questions: 1. Both Roborock S7 MaxV Ultra and S8 Pro Ultra designed in the way that you don't really need to remove wet mopping pads, because they have self-cleaning ULTRA stations. So even though S7 MaxV is easier to remove wet mopping platform as an attachment, I don't see it being as some kind of advantage for S7 MaxV. Yes, of course, you would need to change mopping clothe like every few months, but it's not a big deal at all to flip and change the new mopping cloth once in a while. 2. Camera / remove viewing with 2 ways audio on Roborock S7 MaxV Ultra is more like a gimmic feature, I feel more like a marketing thing, rather than practical thing. I mean, if would care about my pet - I would rather install IP camera with treat releasing system, 2 ways audio, built in laser game, etc. For security purposes - also proper IP cameras would do a better job, rather than robot vacuum cleaner with integrated camera. When it comes to robot vacuum cleaners - I need a system, which would do a good job in avoiding obstacles at home. 3. I wonder how did you measure the wet mopping test results, stating 85% for S7 MaxV Ultra and 60% for S8 Pro Ultra. Could you comment more on this regarding measuring method? 4. Have you noticed any difference among those 2 models when it comes to tangling hair around their rolling brushes? Which one tangles around more? 5. Did the fake poop obstacle avoidance improved on your carpet since the test you have included in this video? I wonder why it was not able to identify this object on your test. Did the software update helped? Did you get any reply from Roborock? Thanks for your time, tests and video once again, useful information and insights! :)
You are very welcome! 1. I do not entirely disagree and personally I do not mind that or the fact the water tank is not removable, but I have learned that other people feel it is a big deal for them so I point it out. 2. Having pets I have IP cameras in my home and a robot that dispenses treats. These are extra expenses though and before I had them I used the S6 Maxv to keep an eye on them. One advantage to the S7 Maxv over those is I can very easily drive it around to find my pets which are not always in one place and I still have to do that with my cats every once in awhile. The cat treat dispensing robot will die after 3 days if I do not leave it plugged in so it has to stay on the wire while I am gone which limits how much it can move. 3. Lol no scientific measurements here just a close guesstimate. 4. Neither tangle hair more than the other. 5. No the latest update has not fixed this. Roborock has not yet responded other than they have the information. Thanks for the support!
I have the new model and overall im happy however: if i dont hand clean the mop after 2-3 uses it leaves my floors greasy. Using a scheduled vac only doesnt empty the bin automatically
Hi Jamie, you don't make it easy 😊😊 I'm really looking at the S8 as it is new, has new features and isn't a year old so should get more firmware and features added to it. However I'm also looking at the S7 MaxV as it is a bit cheaper (not alot) and AI is better. Our house is mostly carpet but not high pile, I'm thinking if I have this running each day the difference in the carpet pickup shouldn't be an issue for the S7, would I be wrong here? We have only one cat so not too concern on pet hair but we have a 14 year old daughter for the life of her leaves all types of objects around the house, e.g pens pencils etc, I'm thinking the S7 could be better in this. I know you went over it but are you able to re-highlight the different options in the app between the 2 as that could be the decider. Also I was wondering in the mopping example, could the S7 have done a better job that the S8 due to the rollers going ??
I think you will be fine with either and you are right the S7 MaxV will stand a better chance avoiding objects although I always recommend people pickup first before the robots go out. Here is a link to my S8 Pro Video where I highlight the changes with the App in the S8. th-cam.com/video/C2cj2-mZ6sw/w-d-xo.html As far as the spinning roller brush in the mopping example, you remind me why I really like my subscribers! I had the exact same thought AFTER I completed my tests and was scratching my head. I would need to rerun the test with vacuum and mop mode to keep the rollers engaged. I may do that as it has been weighing on my head. You have no idea how many tests are run and you only see a very small fraction of them. New video dropping tomorrow!
also, I think the avoid carpet option is there because the S8 and S8+ have a detachable mopping plate and water tank, but the S8 Pro Ultra doesn't, but it's still there for S8 and S8+ owners.
That would depend on cost and who the warranty is through. Overall I would say they are fairly dependable with most issues occurring within the first year.
I got the s8 because I assumed it was better and also preferred the look WAY more. The s7 is an eyesore in my option. But wow it makes me so sad to know the s7 had a camera to be able to check on pets!!! And I’m concerned that the s8 doesn’t do as good of a job with pet waste…. Can’t believe it haha! We have alot if carpets and we have pets so imm happy for that at least… but man I wish they had kept the camera with double way audio.
Skits and rdctv episodes sound like a great idea! Just not a fan of the whole 5 min flashback that's actually just the entire last episode spliced into this one, you can safely assume your viewers are "caught up" and have seen the ups vid
Are you talking about when I show them in a side by side in the performance tests? That is the only real reused video, but it is helpful to show them side by side for comparison, at least I feel that most will appricate that.
Something nobody ever mentions, which was very disappointing to me when I got my S8, is that the sidebrush is placed very poorly. It does not reach completely to the side of the robot, so when it runs along walls, the sidebrush does not clean against the wall.
Interesting. I did not notice this in my testing so I will have to take a look. I know they moved it closer to the wheel as I mentioned in the video so I wonder if they also caused this problem?
the only think i like abt s8 is the dock as s7maxv cant dry the inside but only mop which would have water stuck at the water draining arwa and could lead to mosquito breeding...
@ootz0rz will it will not have stagnant water in the drainage area unlike s7maxv which will be alittle more smelly and possibly breed mosquitoes if not use frequently...
I waited 6 mo to buy the s8 ultra pro bundle when I heard it was being released, so this was interesting. I really like the s8 but it’s my first robo vac and have nothing to compare it to personally.
Thanks for the S7vS8 duel. I went with your earlier advice getting the Dreametech L10s instead because we primarily have LVP floors with just a couple of area rugs under the furniture. I was wondering how a shootout between the Dreametech and the S8 would turn out but since you recommended the Dreametech over the S7 and the S7 over the S8 I guess a direct comparison isn't needed. Nice work on your testing regimen.
You are very welcome and thanks. How do you like the L10s Ultra? I have started back using mine because I plan to do a head to head with it and the Q Revo in August.
@@jamie.andrews I use it a little differently than you. I control it using Home Assistant automation routines. Vacuuming only every day and mopping twice a week. So I only have to empty the dirty water once a week after the second mop day. Vacuuming/mopping is setup to go overnight while we sleep for the entire 1st floor except the master suite. That gets done while we're out for our lunch walk around the neighborhood. This is one of those "labor saving" devices that actually removes work from our life.
would you list best ones for carpet in each price segments? below 200$, 200-400$,400-600$,600-750$,above750$? you can make video with best ones for different purposes in different budget, so users can decide which ones are better in their needs. I haven't seen a website or channel to do it this way as it's more productive & informative for users . there can be 2-5 recommendations for each price categories and purposes
Will you do a comparison of the s7 maxv and s7 max ultra & how the compare to s8 pro ultra. All 3 are very similar but some key differences that could could make the difference.
@@jamie.andrews ok cool, they all are relatively similar in most regards. However there are some key differences that could prove to make the decision to purchase one over the other.
Please do another test with the new firmware updates, I bought the S8 Pro Ultra and I don't think it's that much worse than the S7, that is when you sum up all the dock and robot upgrades in terms of ease of use I think the S8 is ahead. As for performance, and especially for bypassing smaller objects and dog poop, I am very, very interested in the new test.
The S8 has worked better for dog hair, I like the new dock more but agree the mop isn’t any better. A rotating mop attachment like Narwal would be ideal.
With the new Q Revo from Roborock I am excited to test to see if the rotating mop pads work better. They also lift 2mm higher than the Vibrarise system. I should have that review out in 3-4 weeks so keep an eye out for that one. I gave you a sub as well. Nice channel with interesting content. Right down my alley!
This is one of the best comparisons of an electronic gadget I have seen online. Very relevant and actually helps a buyer to decide easily. You deserve a Thank you for your extensive work. 👍👍👌👌
Very humbled by your comment. Thanks for the support!
So... Newer and more expensive isn't always better.
Apple fans would be very angry at you if they could read :D
Excellent review.
Just one note, throughout the review it is recommended to keep the editing sequence so that Model 1 is always on the left and Model 2 is on the right.
Great point. Ty.
I call it as I see it!
Sadly
@@jussivalterwtf is a Roombla?
@@1989cranston Jamie is not everyone ;)
@@1989cranston in tech, yeah. Cleaning performance, nah.
I tend to gift things after 2 years to relatives and so on.
bro is MVP of vacuum reviews
much love mate!
Glad you like them!
Hi Jamie, thank you so much! But still, I can’t decide. I have a large house, nearly all hard floors aside from the odd rug. My main concern is the pick up of hair from my Labrador dog. Which S8 Roborock? 🤦🏻♀️
Thank you, Jenny
All of the S8 models have dual rollers. If you want the most powerful vacuum unit look at the S8 Max or MaxV Ultra. A cheaper option would be the Qrevo models.
Fantastic and very thorough review. Loved how you did the hot sauce challenge three times because you couldn’t believe the results. Your viewers thank you!
Although the fact that the S8 did not avoid the poop on the carpet is a concern if recommending this device to pet owners with a lot of carpet. Hopefully it’s a well trained pet!
Totally agree. The S7 Maxv will avoid it!
And I love that my viewing audience appreciates that effort!
Have you considered the Qrevo MaxV? I will have a review out of that soon.
I found your channel today, watched a view videos and immediately subscribed. i love your style and no BS commenting on the results.
Welcome aboard! Thanks for the support!
Great video. We decided to go with the S7 MaxV Plus over the S8 Plus. Your video definitely helped us in making this decision.
Thanks! Glad to help!
I did the same. Thanks Jamie!
@@n00bma5ter69 Let me know how you like it!

I also got the S7 MaxV Ultra due to this video.
Fantastic review. Ive had my S7 max for 2 years now and its going strong. If I upgrade it'll be to the S7 V Max
Excellent review and it covered everything I needed to know about comparing the two that I'm considering....very helpful and thank you!
Very wel done and explained video. I think you're right on the conclusion. Rather than seeing it as competitors they might be alternatives to each other. I have mostly hard floors and the S7 performs better on that so for me I will be going for the S7.
The S7 is really peak Roborock imo.
That does happen with lots of products. Even cars.
Thank you for great comparison video. I am glad just two days ago ordered s7 maxv :)
You are welcome!
The S7 Maxv plus is a great robot combo. Love that dock and still use mine daily.
Great video, thanks for detailed comparison. After watching your video did some further research and got the understanding that Roborock has S7 Max and MaxV two different model, out of which the later one does not have the auto mop drying and its the older model. The naming of these products are always confusing to consumers.
I will have a video out this weekend showing comparing these 2 models.
@@jamie.andrews Thats great!!
AWESOME video and thank you. I was considering upgrading my 7 max to the 8, but after watching this will keep my tried and true 7. THANK YOU
Thanks! I would hold out for the next generation if I were you.
@@jamie.andrews Yes, I've heard someone else held the patent! Oh well, 4 more years!
@@Dagot1948 irobot is the only robot I am aware of that can detect a full dust bin.
They are in sync. Just a second area vibrating. I think the single plate is bigger and this more effective.
Thanks Adriano! The S7 is just such a good product it is hard for even Roborock to beat their own product.
Can you please let me know why. I don't know which one to buy, s7 or s8. Thanks
@@user-bl4lf9rg8m It really depends on your needs. I try to highlight their differences so you can decide which one would be best for your home. Since everyone has different layouts, floor types, pets etc I do not usually flat out recommend a certain vacuum for any one person.
Damn your reviews are way better than the bigger channels.
Thanks!
Awesome comparison 😊 What about hair Tangles which one performs better?
Well done review! Could you tell if the S7 maxV Ultra with the add on dryer works in a 110v outlet?
Yes, take a look at my video review of the add on dock dryer here: th-cam.com/video/NcRQJTsnh1s/w-d-xo.html where I show you how it plugs in and is setup.
Have they fixed now any of the flaws you described in the video with firmware updates?

@@jamie.andrews thank you will be buying a roborock revo q tomorrow
Thanks for sharing, Jamie, this is really in deep review.
Great review, thanks Jamie! Is the brush of the S8 touching the wheel?

Great video ❤ excellent comparison 👏
Could you do a comparison of the s8 with the dreametech l10s
I will add that to my list. Thanks for the suggestion.
In my country s8 is cheaper 130 euros then s7 maxv. Would you recommend s8 then when you count in that factor?
Sure I actually think both robots are good but, just so you understand the S7 Maxv has more options with removable mopping plate and water tank and better obstacle avoidance so it is really up to you if you want to pay for those differences.
Hello. I can't find any reviews of the bluepunkt omega vacume mop robot. Think it might be good?
First I have heard of it.
Can either be used in a two story house?
Yes
Hi, I have the S7 Max V Ultra and am wondering if the dock requires any maintenance outside of changing the dust filter, water debris filter, and spinning brush.
No that is about it.
Excellent video! Thank you so much for the information! It’s been quite helpful! Greetings from 🇲🇽!!
Thanks! Greetings from the 🇺🇸
Great video. Cant imagine the time and effort you put in.
Much appreciated! A bunch.
Thank you for the detailed comparison!!
How would you compare the bare S7 Vs. S8?
In theory, better suction/double roll for carpet,
better mopping - and obstacle avoidance sounds great.
Loving my S8 Pro Ultra. It does so well with my dogs hair and kids daily mess
Glad to hear! Thanks for stopping by.
I’m curious what firmware you used as well on the s8 during testing. A new update dropped on Friday.
@@Ruffi0 currently it is on 02.15.08 which I got on May 7th. I tested the issue with obstacle avoidance and no improvement.
Did you say that you need to manually press the “drying button” every time for the s7 dock? That sounds annoying. ?
No it will automatically turn on after it washes the mopping pads. The button is only for manual control.
Great bunch of videos Jamie! Thank you for all the hard work and time you put in to bring us these top notch videos.. They were all very well made, to the point, sharp, and most important of all, informative
Thanks
I have never changed a battery in a Roborock myself and my older ones still appear to have no degradation. I would not worry about it.
Perfect comparision. Love my S7. Thanks you!
Thanks. I hear those complains often and irobot needs to step up their game if they are going to continue to exist.
@@jamie.andrews LOL karma. I applied for iRobot as a product designer and they rejected my application.
another advantage of s7 is you can purchase an auto water& detergent refill+empty module for the charging station. I have used it for several months and dont need to care about the water tank forever.
That is a good point. Hopefully they will release one for the S8 Pro Ultra soon.
I have not seen anyone make a straight rating on just mopping. I only have hard wood floors and no carpet so want the best mopping performance. Should I always run 2 passes? How does this compare to the X1 or other mopping robots at mopping alone? Thanks
The X1 did not fare as well. Take a look at my comparison video here th-cam.com/video/Nt1KwfEPoEI/w-d-xo.html
I do not think you need to run 2 passes as you likely do not have stains as bad as I do in these tests.
@@jamie.andrews Looks like they are releasing the Q Revo soon too. Now I'm extra confused on which one to get LOL!
@@seancadet I have it and will have a review out soon.
@@jamie.andrews awesome! Can’t wait! Please do a 3 way battle with the S7 MaxV and the S8. Can’t wait!
Thank you. You made choosing far easier.
Just an idea… how about a robo vac that cleans but also does security checks/ laps around your house whilst you’re out?
Anyone who has no problem with the camera the uses artificial intelligence to map your house with servers in China. Then gives a live feed of a robot vacuum controllable over the internet with no shutter on the lens is crazy to me. Anyone who has even a basic knowledge of privacy and potential for security risk would be nervous, especially with a 24/7 open port to the internet, i.e. it's how you can remote in anytime you want.
Well I am on TH-cam and all countries can see in my home so there is that...
Thanks! I do have an object avoidance video update here

@@jamie.andrews perfect! Just watched it.

S7 MaxV for the win!
Thanks for the vídeo bro! 🇧🇷
My pleasure!
Thank you!! I’m going to check it out!
Yup he pads that hold the mop pad are more secure in the older model
awesome and thorough comparison as usual Jamie. Must say that mopping test was at the very least disappointing to say the least. Side question, on my S7 i was able to easily remove the front wheel to remove the hair, but on the S8 pro i cannot and im afraid to break smth if i pull too much, is it actually removable?
Thanks Ari! I just removed mine and it was harder than the one on my S7 Maxv. I just pulled on one side first and it popped out.
Thanks for your video & here are my personal thoughts, questions:
That is weird about the greasy floors. Are you using detergent?
I will have to test to see if that is a bug. If so I will get it reported.
Here is a link to my S8 Pro Video where I highlight the changes with the App in the S8. th-cam.com/video/C2cj2-mZ6sw/w-d-xo.html
As far as the spinning roller brush in the mopping example, you remind me why I really like my subscribers!
Im waiting for a comparison between the roborock s8 ultra and the dreamebot L20 ultra.
can you pair a s7 maxv vacuum with an s8 pro docking station?
No. Different due to the dual rollers on the S8.
@@jamie.andrews got it. Thanks!
Great review!
also, I think the avoid carpet option is there because the S8 and S8+ have a detachable mopping plate and water tank, but the S8 Pro Ultra doesn't, but it's still there for S8 and S8+ owners.
Yes however it should not be there for the Pro.
Do you think getting extended warranty (5yr) is worth for s7 maxv? How durable is it?
That would depend on cost and who the warranty is through. Overall I would say they are fairly dependable with most issues occurring within the first year.
Incredible work
Thanks!
Are the camera images of the s8 viewed from the phone?
No they can not be viewed sadly.
@@jamie.andrews thank you very much
thank you for your video! God bless you
My much cheaper Ceotec has died, and I was looking at getting the S8, its a huge jump forward. But now confused which is best for dog w/ some rugs. :(
I got the s8 because I assumed it was better and also preferred the look WAY more.
I am guessing they are saving that for a S8 Maxv in the future. The MaxV is their top of the line Object Avoidance system
Why would they make the mopping plate nonremovable? If you have to high of carpets you can’t use it
Well you could use it, but would need to drop it in vaccum only mode and have a dry mopping pad.
@@jamie.andrews Can you confirm if it cleans very close to the wall or the corners? I think I have read it elsewhere that s8 has this kind of problem

the only think i like abt s8 is the dock as s7maxv cant dry the inside but only mop which would have water stuck at the water draining arwa and could lead to mosquito breeding...
You know I totally forgot to mention that on my video! Thanks for the reminder!
Oh wait so the s8 can dry the inside compartment too?
@@ootz0rz yes
@@ImperialDog1999 that's a big enough difference to go for the s8 for me, despite the added cost. Thanks for that info!
It is a great vacuum. There are plenty of reason to choose it over the S7 Maxv which means there is no real wrong choice.
@@jimhatch5873 I love the fact that these robots are now able to save us time and effort! Thanks for sharing!
The pad drying feature is a big seller for me
You can buy a third party drying kit, I’ve seen people say it works fine
would you list best ones for carpet in each price segments? below 200$, 200-400$,400-600$,600-750$,above750$?
you can make video with best ones for different purposes in different budget, so users can decide which ones are better in their needs. I haven't seen a website or channel to do it this way as it's more productive & informative for users . there can be 2-5 recommendations for each price categories and purposes
I will certainly consider it. Thanks for the suggestion.
Will you do a comparison of the s7 maxv and s7 max ultra & how the compare to s8 pro ultra. All 3 are very similar but some key differences that could could make the difference.
Hey Jessica! I am toying around with that idea and will likely do a video on something similar to that.
@@tomislavcacic No improvement with the recent update. 02.16.30 is what I have.
@@jamie.andrews same to you my friend
Thanks for all this info!!!
Welcome!
Great comparison with unexpected results. Will you also compare the s8 pro ultra to the q revo?
I do not have any plans to just yet, but I appreciate the suggestion. If I get enough requests I will certainly consider it. Thanks!
