    I own a 2011 with 103K miles. The car has been a dream to drive and own. My independent mechanic who specializes in German cars ignores some of the Mercedes standard maintenance requirements and recommendations. The oil gets changed every 5K miles and the fluids/seals are checked for all of the systems. The hydraulic fluid was flushed and changed for the ABC suspension at 50K miles and again at 100K. By upping the game on routine maintenance over and above Mercedes recommendations the car has been nearly flawless and in the scheme of things these costs very little relative to the cost of the car. I also own a Toyota that is the most reliable vehicle I have ever owned but to me its ugly, boring and drives like a truck. I appreciate it for what it is "dependable" but it is no Benz. Comparing the two is like apple's and oranges.

    All of the issues with the car seemed to be coming from low voltage, this is fairly common in Mercedes, they are super finecky with electrical currents, if you buy one of those battery charging tools, and you leave it on "hybernate" mode plugged into the wall when you don't drive the car for long periods, the issues will most likely go away, either that or his battery is just going bad and needs replacing.

      The brushes in the Mercedes alternators of that era wore out often. A brush set is less than $20 but it's best to replace them every 50,000 miles instead of waiting for the car to strand you somewhere because Mercedes dealers and even most private shops will 99% of the time tell you you need a new alternator to the tune of almost $800.00. Plus simply being stranded is *ALWAYS NO PICNIC!!!* When you remove those old brushes at 50K miles and see how little of them is left compared to the new ones you are putting in you'll feel very happy you did.

    • @sergiofreitas9368
      @sergiofreitas9368 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Matt_from_Florida interesting, I have an 05 W211, it has 317000km give or take, and I have never had to replace the alternator, just a battery, the previous owner drove it to 210000, however I don't have all of the service records, they only started when I took ownership. Could be a one-off thing, and the alternator might've been replaced before 210k, but I haven't ever been stranded, they're pretty reliable cars.

      I have a charger that shows voltage and with the car not running opening/closing the roof would drop voltage to around 10 volts. Running electric motors on low voltage is bad for them. Wonder if that is why people have issues with the hydraulic motor burning out.

With the top down it makes for a great cruiser and still looks great even over a decade later. Mine’s got 110K miles on it. No problems whatsoever. I do most of my own work, replaced DRLs for under $100 and replaced brakes all around including rotors (Brembos in front) for under $900. This is not a vehicle a person that runs to the dealer for every issue should own nor is it a "daily driver" but it is an awesome vehicle bordering on "super car". Those codes likely tripped after they disconnected their battery. A lot of those codes look like the same codes my mechanic found in my SLK230 when i had replaced the battery in my car. If the battery is disconnected for more than 10 seconds, with most Mercedes', when you turn them back on, before driving you must turn the wheel all the way left, all the way right, and back center before you move the car. Otherwise, it trips a bunch of codes.

    Howdy Scotty!!! I've got an '05 Merc SL500- similar car. I think it needs a battery. Mercs will test funny or not at all if your line voltage is low or unsteady. If the customer is willing, ask if you can put a new battery in it. Clear all the codes and put at LEAST 50-75 miles on it and scan again. Whatever comes back are most likely to be "real" codes. I lived through this when I bought mine about 3 and a half years ago; fortunately, it was just one battery [mine takes two!!]. Just my 2 cents! Great work, buddy.

    Usually when you get low voltage errors or communication errors between the modules it means the battery was ran low at some point. Maybe the lights were left on or the battery failed and had to be replaced. So many people believe that when there is a problem, just disconnect the battery to clear the code, but in reality that's not what happens. It stores codes at a deeper level of CAN BUS. That cannot be read unless you have an expensive code scanner or the case of this vehicle a MB Star C5 or C6.
