I have a 2008 G500 and I'm the second owner. It was well maintained and I use a local MB master mechanic when it needs something. So far in 5 years it's cost me about 2K in routine maintenance. I've also had a couple of repairs that have totaled about 3K over those 5 years. I fix little things that go wrong to keep it looking and running like new. Nice thing is that the body style has stayed the same over the years (until last year, of course). Terrible gas mileage. Practical? No. Fun? Yes.

Yeah if you want a nice Mercedes SUV, the GLS is way nicer, a bit cheaper, and the new one is big and boxy enough to have a similar presence to the G-Wagen. Offroading-wise, you're not going to Moab, it's a unibody crossover based on a sedan platform. It does, though, have plenty of capability. That's true of a lot more crossover's than you'd expect, you can get very far back in the woods in West Virginia with a Nissan Murano. The cladding that everyone hates actually protects the paint pretty well; the skidplates won't protect you from a high-center like real ones do, but they do the job short of that; the added ground clearance is more than enough; and they've done enough to the suspension that you'll never bottom out. You're not going to bend the frame on a rock just because it's not BOF, these things aren't made of cardboard lol.
I have a 2005 G500 Grand Edition. Mechanically it is in excellent condition however the body is a different story. It has minor rust on the rear door and significant rust under the rocker bar trim. This trim attracts rust as water and dirt gets in there. I would recommend periodically removing the trim and cleaning the metal underneath. Another area of rust/corrosion is around the windscreen. The seal harbors water and eventually it rusts. The worst area is under the car. Part of the exhaust recently split due to the screws completely rusting out. It looks like something that was brought up from the Titanic! Luckily its only a $250 repair. I have been quoted $3000 - $5000 to restore the body of this G-Wagen to be perfect and completely rust free. I love this car so I will do it.
Old way of building a car. they rust. many pieces rub on the clear coat, many cracks that are sealed with seam sealer that need to be redone periodically, many exposed welds on the roof. I mean it is made liek it was 50 years ago. It is how it is. Keep it dry
@@EddiTarug classes are known to hold their value forever. My mom actually picked up a 2014 g550 over a 2021 GLE 450 because of that. They won't die and don't depreciate like the GLE does
89% of the time those “can” codes are related to the “low voltage “ codes and Normally low voltage codes are related to each other in different control units it’s all one system it may only require a battery
Check for body ground terminals! My L405 Range Rover had 1 of i think 9 that rusted and the whole ABS, suspension, transmission, 4x4 etc where throwing codes. Until my mechanic found the loose ground terminal and everything went away!!
DatCarGuy310 All cars can be problematic when not properly cared for. I rather deal with a Rover then a Cadillac or a Lincoln ugly design and poor build quality.
Scotty: A little trick with Mercedes Benz and fault codes: The engine has to run always(!) reading the codes out... This eliminates the "low voltage" errors, connected with the other bus system errors;-). A fan from Germany
Scotty, here's a suggestion for a video: Evaluate a car that you definitely would not recommend the customer buy and give the specific details why you came to that conclusion.
Hey Pat, Maybe my description was unclear. What I'm suggesting is when a customer is "thinking" about buying a used car, takes it to Scotty before he buys it, then Scotty video tape THAT scenario. I'm not new to his videos but he's only shown cars from customers that already purchased the vehicle.
I'd be interested in seeing (what happens when) someone going into a dealership with one of those scanners and checking out a car right in the show room to see if everything ( a lot of things) checks out all-right. I'd be very interested in that.
Toyota rust their asses off and still do, rust has ALWAYS been a bigger issue for them than Domestics He’s blaming it on corrosion inhibitor but it’s really usage cycle. Let a car sit for a few weeks and it’s develops this type of corrosion more than one that’s driven regularly.
On my 4th G wagen. I do a little off-reading but I like the space inside and the slow depreciation. I don’t drive it much so gas isn’t a big deal and it rarely needs any work. I do the maintenance myself for the most part. I’d recommend a west coast only G and also avoid 2002.
@@redtestarossa Thank you so much for getting back to me. How about trying buying a newer one? Are they any better? Less or more reliable? I've notice a huge price jump once I'm looking at 2010 and newer.
Cyrus Irani yeah just stating that bigger cars can be more economical. The diesel 7 series for example like;y gets better fuel economy than a 1 litre eco boost. I know for a fact it is better than some 2 litre petrols with half the BHP. Typically thanks to diesels though, definitely what I would choose
Scotty that is not a 2012. That is a 2002 G500, you can tell by the gauge cluster in the interior, the aftermarket side mirror covers only made to fit 2002 G Wagons and older, and the blinker on the body.
Love the G platform. Family member has a 2017 G63. Aside from Service A, B, C it hasn’t been in the shop in 25k miles for any issues. Then again the brakes alone cost nearly $3500.
Nathan C I had mine for 5 years. No issues whatsoever outside of regular maintenance. This guy just hates everything that’ isn’t made by Toyota, But I must say, my brake service cost me about a 3rd if what you paid for yours
Driving a 1985 280 G The most durable and reliable vehicle. It was imported from Austria to Canada. Like an old tractor, I don't think that the engine will ever die. Unfortunately it started to rust, but I guess after 35 years it is OK.

my gwagon is from 2005, i bought it in 2009 for 37 grand and it had 60k miles. today, shes on her second engine (cuz we didn't change the oil on time), but has zero rust, and has been rear ended 4 times, the most recent being by a ford f350 super duty, and still zero frame damage
The ultimate “Look at me, I’m rich” vehicle. Those transmission codes are ominous. The definitions may as well just say “This code is going to cost you 6K”.
Living in New York state for the first 30 4 years of my life dealing with rust what pain in the butt. Seeing this video reminds me of how crappy it was trying to work on your car. Every nut rusted onto the bolt rounded. Exhaust parts rusting off your car excetera. Now I live in the Las Vegas Valley dry dry dry, what a pleasure to work on my car now.
I know, I hate it, a really common and very stupid and dumb batshit habit that Mercedes-Benz owners do, if you don't know the difference between a regular Mercedes model and an AMG, then GTFO of here.
Guys, you can get a non-AMG mercedes with AMG appearances package (bumpers and rims) from dealership. The v8 has two turbos (bi-turbo) lol yall kinda dumb
Scotty forgot to mention that the G wagon is one of the best value holders in Mercedes. Take for example the S class... flagship car. Loses value like MAD. While a 2000 G wagon today with decent mileage will still cost you 15-20k. A 2000 S class? 1k.

True I recently saw a 2006 G-Wagon with 220.000km for 45.000€ hahahaha What the hell man
@ It looks almost identical to the 2021 models hence it retains it's value so much - you can drive it as is and people will think you're a baller - or slap on a $3k bodykit and exterior upgrades and people will think you have the 2021 model that costs $200k USD when you only spent $25k lol (as long as you don't let them see the interior) - or even spend $10k and change the interior completely to match the 2021 models and voila, you spent the price of a Toyota Corolla for a 2021 G-Wagon that Kanye West and Cristiano Ronaldo flex with on Instagram lol People underestimate just how much car values are tied to how they look lol
True their may be many codes on these cars but in many cases they may have just been triggered once or twice and the control units will automatically store a code. That's why most of them are just stored and not current. And from what it looks like, alot of those codes are actually caused by low battery voltage. Mercedes-Benz vehicles are very sensitive to low voltage. Obviously, but if taken care of they will last
As a 24yr auto mechanic all the codes are related to the vehicle having a low battery at some point.clean main grounds.clear codes then see what codes reappear in the PCM. Therefore you do not throw parts at a vehicle that you do not know the full history on as well as you can see visual rust on the ground points for the computer system
I used to have an ‘86 300GD. 3-litre NA diesel. Bought it used, ran it for 9 years, sold it to a friend. He still runs it. The engines on those old ones are almost indestructible. You will get some rust issues - rear corners, the bottom of the doors, hinges/frame on the rear door etc. What is rock solid and do not rust very much, is the frame (unlike other body on frame trucks). The frame is internally wax coated. Parts are terribly expensive, though. The old W460 series is much simpler, and easier to fix, but not really a luxury car.
I have heard that the steel used in G wagons is cheap recycled steel. Hence, they rust quickly. The good news is the steel is very thick and can be repaired quite easily.
As a German driving a G-CLass I can confirm this. If you want a reliable G buy the prechamber OM606 Turbodiesel G with 177ps. Every G after it with Diesel are moneypits as scotty says. 100% true Please keep in mind, these things are build to last. It is a reason why over 60 armys around the World use the G. But every thing ages and Repairs cost, if you need a car, the G is not for you. If you love the G and it is you hobby, then go for it, but have 200 USD per Month put aside for repairs atleast.
same thing with the land cruiser , the land cruiser comes with both diesel and gas engines and you can find land cruiser basically everywhere on earth , armies, mining industries, overlanders........ love them but unlike the Gwagen the land cruiser has sold over 12 million examples from the 70 series to the prado to the 200 series.
@@Lincolnator721 200 a month for repairs is a lot. Most AMGs will cost you that. Its not a Bugatti. Once they are sorted you need to just maintain. Most people ignore that and are surprised that the cars develop serious problems.
@@Midg-td3ty alright cuz my brother was spending about $200 a month in repairs on his 2013 cadillac cts so it seemed a little generous for a $130,000+ SUV
@@Lincolnator721 It's a German made German car in Europe cars are checked and maintained a lot more by mechanics that know way more about the cars so in Europe German cars are actually reliable enough that it isn't really an issue
Amen. I bought a certified used Landcruiser in 2009. It was a 2006 and had 42,000 miles. It's got 167,000 now and runs like the day I bought it. It handles every weather condition with ease. If I had bought a G wagon instead I'd probably be getting rid of it or would have gotten rid of it by now and would have spent 10x in maintenance. I plan on keeping it for many more years.
145,000 miles on mine so far. It's my daily driver. They are built like a tank. Very few issues at all. They are absolute beasts off-road and anyone that doesn't believe that doesn't know anything about them. I'm a country boy that hunts and fishes out of my G constantly. It has aggressive AT tires on it and has been absolutely covered in mud and red slick clay on many occasions. I've always owned 4 wheel drive vehicles.
I’ve seen those low voltage warning on the computer before I purchase my used 2005 C55 AMG. I figured it was when the previous battery went bad because the service records showed a battery swap shortly after the faults were recorded and the computer didn’t show any record of low voltage after that date.
Most of those codes are "stored" and not "current" codes. This means that those faults are not active which means they were repaired or probably popped off because of a bad battery.
Scotty, I remind you Toyota Tundra '06, had recall for rusty frame. German protect nuts w/ wax like coat, use stainless exhaust system and OEM parts cost the same like others brands.
Thanks for the video, I like most of your videos but this time you're totally wrong. That's NOT a 2012, it's 2005 at most and it's not AMG or 550 it's just the simple 500 8 cylinders engine very reliable and cheap engine that you can get from the ML 500 S500 CL500...
You could look at the Land rover Defender, similar rugged boxy looks & built as a simple true off roader, other road models can have electrical problems but that model is simple & tough.
Struggling to pick between older land cruiser or 2013 g wagen. Will be almost strictly for of road use. Always wanted the old cruiser but after seeing how well these Mercedes do I'm torn
Hey Scotty, I was wondering if you could tell us about proper vehicle break-in on a brand new vehicle. What’s the best way to do it, how important is it and what happens if it’s not done properly? Thanks a lot!
Makes little sense... build a drivetrain that produces 300 hp and lasts 300k miles, body rots off and electronics are obsolete in five years. Cost - $40k
I live up north, and know someone with a 2008(?) Toyota Tacoma, and its frame rusted out so bad, Toyota had to recall and replace them..(They're all like that.. Tundras and Sequoias too) The supplier apparently had crap rust-resistance treatment for several years. Anyone who owns a Toyota truck or SUV from around 2004 all the up to 2010 for some. Check into it, it may be rusted out.. (if you live in a place like Texas or Arizona, you probably haven't noticed) (edit: that might affect Toyota 4Runners from 2005 - 2011 as well)
An interesting fact about the genesis of the G-Wagon is; in the 1970's, the Shaw of Iran asked Mercedes Benz to make a military vehicle, which would be good for Iran's military. What Mercedes Benz came up with, was the G-Wagon. If I remember right, the Shaw himself, actually worked with Mercedes Benz, letting them know generally what was needed, although it was probably not more than some scribblings on a cocktail napkin, during the initial request, but, no Shaw of Iran, no G-Wagon!
Scotty, you forgot the best part about the history of the car. Thanks to Iran and Shah of Iran who gave Mercedes Benz chief executive the idea and the design for the G series.
@@ItzCaptGaming thats $2000 first year and 2k next year plus $100 gas a week. Its a flex. Flexing aint cheap. You know what they say dont buy it if you cant buy it twice 🤣. Sweet car but honestly too much money but its a tank but still too much lol
I mean, if the car itself is like $150k, then proportionally you're spending less on maintenance than other brands. It's not like Chevy, where maintenance will exceed the cars value and risk your safety in the meantime.
Unless all those "faults" trigger a warning light, then they are not a problem. They could all be due to battery voltage or something like having the key on with the engine off and stepping on the brake or some other dumb thing.
I like this channel after Ive eaten too much. The sound of his voice and his epileptic hand motions help me to purge! These videos are part of my weight loss program.
This was an Unprofessional review, because: 1) This is not a 2012 model year. 2) This is not an AMG. 3) This is very old G-Wagen build way prior to 2003, and now has a lot of cheap aftermarket upgrades. 4) This is the G-Wagen that was heavily used and very slightly maintained. It is my humble suggestion do not review if you are not in knowledge of the content.

This *G Wagon came out of a cooperation with Puch* which manufactured in the 1950 and 1960's the *famous "Puch Haflinger one of the most amazing Off-Road vehicles* ever made. *Haflinger* is the name of one Horse often found in Austria, Puch followed then with the *Pinzgauer* another Off-Road-vehicle made mostly for the Austrian military. The next vehicle was the Puch -G IIRC, and it looked more lake the Land Rover's of the 1960... Puch at one time also build two stroke Motorcycles mostly up to 250 cc, 50 cc mopeds, and Bicycles.
Low voltage to the transmission...in other words the battery died and that code was most likely thrown when it got jumped and probably threw 20 other low voltage/communication codes.
#19 here today The 4th owner for a 8 year old car, it's most definitely is telling you something, never buy a Northern owned vehicle. We took our 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee to a friend who had a $3000 dealer level scan tool, bad main radiator cooling fan was all that came up. 140,000 miles, that 4.0 liter engine runs forever and I'll put that engine up against anything the Jerry's make.
ok..the finale left some room for the bright side..given the original cost..if its running..& you've got a repair stash..pony up, depends how much you love it. always wanted a Range Rover, but it just doesn't seem to be the same..very dumbed down for soccer moms, lowered the height, removed buttons, i fell out of love.
I had a Toyota LiteAce 2.0 Turbo Diesel in New Zealand, it came from Japan as a Userd car, it had something like 585.000 kms on it, and it was in perfect shape, no rust, not a single spot of rust, it amazes me to this day ( it spent its entire life on islands), now i have a russian lada niva... its a bucket of rust my god! but i overheated-boiled the engine 3 times ( forgot to put water, it leaks hahaha) and still running as if nothing happened hahahaha, bulletproof engines i got to say.
Also also, Rust Warranties for BMW, Audi and Porsche seem to be 12 years unlimited miles. Toyota, Honda, and pretty much everyone else are 5 years. Lexus is 6, American brands are also 6, and VW is 7 currently. (12 for some) (stipulations / process and other caveats and hoop jumping for repair seem to be the same for Toyota as it is for others, as far as I could tell) I'd think if they didn't treat well for rust resistance, it'd cost them quite a bit. Edit: Mercedes seems to be the odd-brand out, with a 5yr _surface rust,_ and 4yr _perforation rust._
I just received my 2023 Rivian R1S after 3.5 years of waiting. Now I have buyers remorse. Since car prices will see a significant correction I feel I would be better off paying about $10K and trading it in for a 2024 Mercedes GLS which may hold its value better. What do you think.

True their may be many codes on these cars but in many cases they may have just been triggered once or twice and the control units will automatically store a code.
