    Before you spend all that money on a transmission, you should take it to a MB specialist in this vintage of Mercs. Those transmissions can be finicky and have several adjustments. Start with filter, fluid, flush. Then move on to vacuum adjustments and check the fluid pressures. There are ports and adjustments on the drivers side of the transmission for that stuff. Could be a broken “K” piston that is easily changed with the pan off too.

    • @matthewgodwin3050
      @matthewgodwin3050 4 ปีที่แล้ว +45

      Very good advice. Most problems on this vintage Mercs can be repaired with a bit of care and intelligence without swapping out major parts. Problems are usually caused by lack of proper maintenance, things not being lubed or flushed through etc. Check out Mercedes Source. Kent is a mine of information for Mercedes, and his TH-cam channel has loads of information and tutorial videos to help you repair these old Mercs yourself. This car is definitely worth investing a little love into it.

    Tyler, after watching this video I wish I had kept my old '93 Lincoln Continental. The only thing that really aggravated me was the chime that was constantly ringing every time the gauge display would change in the digital cluster. The seats were like butter, the moonroof worked flawlessly, and it rode like a dream...even after I replaced the air suspension with coils from Strutmasters for a third the cost of an air system. I replaced her after buying a Buick with the supposedly "bulletproof" 3800 V-6. She locked up at 130k . Upon dropping the pan one of the bearing caps was in the bottom and another barely hanging on. Upon investigation I found that many of the early "Series II" 3100 engines were recalled, and apparently the dealer had not done the work properly. Lesson learned! Check very source available to research issues common to a vehicle before dropping cold hard earned cash. A friend bought the Connie and drove it another 10 years.

The late 90´s E class sporty versions have even less distinction between regular and AMG version. Slap 18inch AMG monoblocks on a regular E320 with 200$ muffler ends and most people will think it´s an AMG. This E500 was also not as prone to rust as the W210.

      @@neale.kaufman5168 Yeah of course honda wil outlast anything, and stand behind their cars like nobody else! That is obviously why there are so many happy owners of new high-performance honda civics who have to drain the gasoline from the crankcase of their brand new 1.5l turbocharged rocketsled every 500-1000 miles just to keep it from overflowing and bursting into flames. But at least it's fun to drive... Well OK it's slower than a $500 diesel volkswagen from 1998 with a $50 eBay stage 1 ecu tune. With 250,000 miles showing on an odometer that has been broken since a year that contained two zeros, but the civic does have a big red "R" on the back so it's obviously a sports car. And of course it's comfortable, with that wonderful ever-present scent of gasoline wafting into the cabin cutting down on the little pine tree bill and not increasing the oner's family's cancer risk AT ALL. Oh yeh and since Honda's engineering response was to reprogram the ECU so that the A/C compressor stays on at full capacity at all times to make the engine run hotter so there will be less unburned fuel making it's way into the lubricating oil through blowby there is literally no interior heating in the winter. Which of course did nothing to fix the problem for every owner I have heard from, and every owner that signed the NHTSA petition asking for a recall, but honda's brilliant engineers said before they roled out a "fix" as well as after that oil dilution with unleaded gasoline to the tune of as much as a quart or in some cases two plus every couple hundred miles is indeed NORMAL and apparently will not negatively impact the service life of the engine one bit, and so they see zero reason to act further. That;s the new civic typeR 1.5l turbo that I'm referring to - if you don't believe me go to the NHTSA's advisory site or carcomplaints.org.
      Versus the mercedes w124, a platform which was so thoroughly over-engineered that there are dozens if not hundreds of examples still on the road today with well over a million miles on the original engine and transmission, some (including many of the so-called "north african taxicab" variety) with more than double that which are still trusted daily all over the world by their owners as their means to make a living, hundreds in the USA with north of 700,000 miles and still going strong - a german suburban main battle tank with industrial reliability which even the BBC top gear crew was unable to kill without driving into water deeper than the car's roof.
      Oh wait, that's right, they tried that too - they even let the poor old merc float, then sink, with the key still in the run position. They even left it soaking for an hour or two after the electronics stopped randomly rolling windows up and down and flashing headlights and the like. Proeeding then to tow it out and let it drip dry for an hour or two then replaced the battery. Of course the poor thing would not turn over, despite the elecronics coming immediately back to life (for the most part) there wasn't even a hint of movement when trying the starter. After they pulled the plugs and purged the hydrolocked engine's cylinders of water through the spark plug holes (using the still working starter to do so) they replaced the oil for good measure and put the plugs back where they belonged and it fired back up and drove away under it's own power. That was the final attempt to kill it except for running it over with an american-style monster truck, which also failed to stop it from moving, though made it a bit clumsy to navigate around a mallwart parking lot.
      And your money is on Honda, eh?

Heck, people that bought brand new cars 10 years ago and still drives them probably have had more trouble. I agree that a Mercedes is far from bulletproof, but on the other hand, it seems that americans for some reason think that every Mercedes is built like a spaceship and impossible to repair, even if it's a 240D from the 70s. Of all the brands I have been working on, only my 1985 Nissan Pickup has been more pleasant working on than Mercedes, but that is such a simple built truck built to last in developing regions that they really shouldn't be compared......

    As a young car lover and mechanic, 25 now, I've been buying classic cars since I was 17 and a student, with very few money as that's what I could afford but, then, fixing and restoring them I've always used to spend more that if i'd bought them new or restored, and not talking about hours spent working on them hahahaha But... You know what? I've ended spending more money, I've got angry many times, dissapointed as well, etc.. And I've thought many many times that I've made a mistake working on cars as a job and being cars my hobby as well, it sometimes is hard to stand... But I've learned in a crazy way about cars, I've dissassembled and assembled completely my cars, made my own parts, I've driven and beaten them knowing I could always fix them again, I've enjoyed them... And I guess that's what matters... If you don't want to spend money on a car, just buy a brand new Hyundai (cheap and... Yes, reliable)... But if you love cars, choose what you like, it hurts spending money on them, but... Each one spends money on what they like hahahaha Finish and keep that Merc!!! ;)

    The last well-built Mercedes was the 123 series from '76-'85 (a few wagons were built in '86).
    You can get a VERY good w123 for $5-10K, but check for the usual rust spots, and get one with manual hvac controls, as the climate control system monovalves is unobtainable now.
    I waited until I found an excellent, full euro-spec, '84 240d with manual hvac, manual trans, and manual windows, with none of the usual rust, for less than $5K.

    Like the Hammer and E60,,, the 500E is a somewhat unique (ok, that's an oxymoron) animal among w124's,,, not unreasonable to expect running costs to be higher. The truth remains though, that the 124's were, and still are, brilliant cars,,, like any other automobile,, they need to be looked-after and not abused. I've had a few 124's,, an 87 260E,,,, 89 300E and a 93 300CE Cabriolet that I still have after 15 years,, all have been awesome cars and had well north of 150k miles.. Other than a new wiring harness and a couple of hydraulic parts on the cab,,, none have required anything more than regular maintenance and a couple of valve-cover gaskets and a flex disc,, all 'doable' DIY jobs..

    Unlike some of Hoovie's purchases, this car is actually quite a good example of a sought-after model. On those standard wheels it looks brilliant, and it deserves quality parts and workmanship, which Hoovie and the wizard provide. Despite the often economic-based decision making on this channel, cars are far more pleasing when you keep them around and spend money on them based on how much enjoyment you get out of owning and driving them, not how much financial return you'll get by buying and fixing them. If you buy a car within your means to own, maintain, and enjoy you'll never feel the pinch of spending money on it.
