I purchased mine in 2005 new, still have, never selling it. Makes me smile every drive. 4.9 to 100 is still pretty handy and blows off most cars nearly 20 years it's junior. Had a few minor repairs done, it's now 120k KM and just about to it's refit aka plugs, belts, cover gaskits etc, all the normal m113 stuff. I drive top down unless it's raining, cold is no issue with airscarf. Never use the stereo, the exhaust note is the best sound track around.

What are the servicing costs like?

@@nobleoxx The engine & transmission are well known to be robust and my car followed the usual, timing cover gaskets, a few other minor items needed replacing at 120,000km. I've not done the 16 spark plugs yet, supposed be done at 120,000km but it runs fine, that will be expensive when required @$12 each. I downgraded the front brakes from floating to solid discs so thats now cheap to maintain and to be frank the brakes work just as well. Only fault I have had was again a common one, a few capacitors in the aircon control $3 for parts to DIY fix. All in all I've probably spent US$1,000 on these extra items and the balance is routine tyres (they wear really well as the car is balanced well, I run Pzeros and like them a lot), oil, pads and thats been pretty much it. Not bad for 17 years motoring. Here in NZ the car is now going up in value as they are seldom available. Hope this helps. BTW: I selected this car as I could see the technology for emissions control becoming an unwanted overhead on newer models. I'd consider this car 'basic" on electronics and therefore uber easy, low risk, low cost to maintain and this has proven the case.

Just bought an Slk55 after years of yearning for one and rewatching this video over and over. I absolutely love it. Its the first luxury car I've ever owned. If you're someone who comes from driving hondas and toyotas, the interior is not gonna feel cheap. There are lots of plastics, but its all pretty nice soft touch stuff. When I first got in the SLK I was honestly shocked that it felt as solid inside as it did.

I said newer ones have smaller engines. Most of the newer engine, regardless of displacement s, are better then the older engine because it is more efficient in the sense of engine displacement over HP. Older 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, 12 or however many cylinders cannot compete with the newer same type of engine.
BTW if you think no 4 pots can get 380hp here is a real example for you to swallow.
Look at the new Koenigsegg Gemera. That thing have a 3 cylinder 2.0L twin turbo engine that produce 600hp. That is 200hp per cylinder. This is the future.

When the owner started the car from cold - that V8! I was hooked. I still went to see the Boxster, but I bought the 55. It’s the noise and speed of the thing. Yes the gearbox can be a nightmare upshifting when you don’t want it to, but the trick is to limit it to 3rd or 4th gear using the paddles and it’s a revelation.

For experiencing AMG's best mastery of the SL/SLK classes, drive the end of the generation: the SL63 AMG. Thanks to AMG's visceral direct steer update truly fluid road feel can be felt with the ABC chassis. Even more than brand new electronically assisted steering models. Indeed the end of the R230 generation was peak SL and the best of the generation for a multitude of reasons. SLK55's improved dramatically in 2010 as well. However 2009-2012 SL63's and especially SL65's are exceedingly rare. However they are exceedingly dominant road weaponry at speed. Very insightful Mr. Jay.

As the owner of the car featured in this video I wholeheartedly recommend the SLK55 as a fun car purchase. I've had mine for over 3 years and still enjoy it immensely. Just watch out for corrosion on the arches and the rear subframe can also be vulnerable to rot. The air conditioning compressor is under the front bumper and therefore very well positioned to pick up grime and stones, if it has failed it is awkward to get to (bumper off) and expensive. I would recommend a pre- purchase inspection on a ramp by either a specialist or Mercedes Benz. Good Luck.

You can get paddle shifts fitted to replace the standard steering column buttons. I believe this was an option not many people chose. They're the same paddles that are fitted to the SLS, so they're aluminium and have a great feel to them. Much more fun on a mountain road! Highly recommended. Also, an X-pipe (straight-through) exhaust adds a LOT more drama. But, with more noise come more responsibility. If you live in a quiet street, your neighbours will hate you. And, if you're a yob, so will everyone else.

The R171 is seriously undervalued in the UK, not the case in Europe. The post-facelift car is especially good value with the manual providing a solid and accurate shift as opposed to the snick-snak of the Boxster. Your drive the two cars differently and both are excellent. Horses for courses.

You can have a lot of fun in it to, the rear suspension have a looot of grip and hugs the road, but also you can drift it without the BMWs well felt rubbery feeling.

We own a 1998 XK8 (the original 4.0 model, even before the supercharged XKR came out for the 1999 model year), bought it in mint condition in 2013.
It looks and sounds absolutely beautiful, not flashy but classy. The steering is great, and given how bulbous cars have gotten, it is rather narrow and can actually be enjoyed on (more sweeping) B roads. 'Only' 284 hp are sufficient for my taste but picking up a 4.2 XKR certainly does not go amiss either. Especially since this will save you from the dreaded plastic chain tensioner issue (which we, and many others, have not experienced). You may want to pick up one with the three center gauges rather than the outdated sat nav for an extra special feel (don't be scared by the 'oil pressure' gauge, it is fake and able to scare anybody with the knowledge of what an oil pressure gauge ought to do). As with any classic car, invest in rust proofing it further (we had bad experiences with our S-Type) and seek out a truly good mechanic (they are incredibly hard to come by in Germany), the car will thank you for it.
Feel free to ask me any further questions, if you think I may be able to help you out.

@@X8X8X8X8X8X8X8X8X8X Yea I wanted to avoide the 4.0 because of the plastic tensioners. I didn't think it would be a big issue but I figured if I could avoide it I would. Same with the power I figured if I could get the XKR I might as well. I didn't want the satnav version it doesn't look as nice and I doubt it would work that well today. Didn't know about the fake oil gauge though, not that I mind as it still looks much nicer then the sat nav version.
We have the same problem in the UK, most mechanics are really bad and will either not work on a car because it's too much work or will just rush it entirely. Would you have the underside treated with waxoyl or something?

Good call. Might as well get the best version you can get.
I have to say I am surprised. I figured one should be able to find proper Jaguar mechanics in their own country at the very least. I would: we had all the cavities sealed (I cannot remember with what unfortunately), the X- and S-Type we had before both succumbed to rust in Southern Germany's salted roads.
For German standards this car is too cheap to be any good. I suspect this is very much different in the UK, however. IF it has full service history (the most important thing!) and few, preferrably one, owner and no short-term owner, it seems like a good deal.
Interior wear seems to fit the mileage. Foglamps are fogged up (ironically). The left rear mudguard looks a bit dull in one picture, it may have been repainted.

I don't know why people consider the SLK 55 a sportscar? Sure its a convertible but it wasn't even meant to be that type of car. It's a full on muscle car so the 5G and 7G tronic fit quite well with the theme of the SL and SLK.
And also they shift very smoothly as expected from a torque converter automatic. Just don't try to shift up and down the gears too much (manual enthusiasts might cringe at this but this is an automatic not a stick shift).

I own a BMW M4 and an E89 Z4. Both great cars but my SLK 300 handles like the MINI Roadster I once had. Very fun car. The SLK is super underrated. I bought it over a Boxster because most Porsche models look like VW Beetles. I would rather arrive at every destination in a Benz than a VW. 😀

I've got the red, trust me it looks fantastic on this car pristeen with 30k from new. It really gets lots of attention getting very sort after now. High octane fuel is a must with 16 platinum spark plugs, not to be used with 95ron trust me 7 years of ownership.

Both the 2006 slk280 and 2006 slk55 amg are underrated and under appreciated, to me. I've owned both and be it fuel milage or speed, thsee cars have it. The two things I don't like are either are 1) what's with the cup holder placement?? and 2) I would not suggest taking these cars on long road trips if you don't have much travel time. Denver to Deadwood, it's a fun drive. Denver to Dallas, NOT a fun drive. I'm considering putting a RenTec Supercharger in my 55 amg. Any thoughts???

I drove my SLK 55 to Spa Francorchamps and back to the UK (600 Miles) to watch the SPA Classic racing event. I think my buddy and I must have used every millimetre of storage including around the spare wheel but if all went-in, just. 😆

kleemann or Rennech supercharger? Do it. It’s it turns a phenomenal engine into vastly superior with more usable torque curve and throttle response for sport driving. Just make sure you get a limited slip

Sounds like a pretty exciting idea. Have you done this yourself?
With the supercharger and LSD it would definitely be a mini SLR.

@@julianadams2206 I have a limited slip (westek or westech can't remember the spelling). I want to get the kleemann supercharger. Working on it. I think the package with the intercooler, of course not including installation installing it yourself is about 8,000.00 US. There's a few people with videos on TH-cam about both products the Renntech and the kleeman. Might want to take a look at one of those or the company's literature. Pretty exciting product

Hi Jay and others, do you know if the slk55 has adjustable lumbar support in the AMG seats? I’ve been in the slk350 which didn’t have it and was very uncomfortable. Would put me off the AMG if it doesn’t have adjustable lumbar due to back issues. Thanks for any help people can give! 👍

    • @julianadams2206
      @julianadams2206 4 ปีที่แล้ว

I have lower back issues but find my SLK 55 AMG seats very supportive.
I don’t think that there is any lumber adjustment, just height, tilt and recline and am pretty sure the seats are bespoke to the AMG variant.

    I had a 2010 Slk 350 with 306 hp
That restyled version with the mclaren nose looks much better.
Also the interior from 2008 on was much better quality.
I owned it from new and drove it 7 years.
    Fast enough anyway.

Interesting review personally, I found this popular car, to be very confused, massive engine in a small body which was horribly let down by its transmission and then a total lack of ability to deliver its power through the rear because it does have a lot of torque, so in summary, neither a good sports car or cruiser. Personally I think it's better compared to the E89 Z4 and for me that's a much nicer car in every aspect, but also just a cruiser in 35is guise.
